Why Am I Getting This Error In Threads?
I have used the correct syntax, but it seems there is some error! :(

In Java, code goes inside methods. When you define (inline) your thread class, you forgot to define a method "run" that wraps your code.

Button doesn't work on a new thread

Previously I had error - something about some loop, I've seen info that it is necessary in that case to start a new thread for button, but still nothing happens, thought logs show no errors now.

runOnUiThread mean you are telling the UI thread to execute the passed Runnable as instruction so it won't create a new thread.
Solution : I assume you this code is for demo purpose for threading and UI updation so one of best alternative is to AsyncTask
and remove runOnUiThread function , no need of it
You need to remove this code or move it inside run method
Intent intent = new Intent(this, CaptureActivity.class);
intent.putExtra(CaptureActivity.AutoFocus, true);
startActivityForResult(intent, CAPTURE);
Because you are currently in CaptureActivity not on MainActivity.
OnCreate will directly take you to the CaptureActivity where you are expecting the code of MainActivity to run (probably they have same UI)

Main Activity not opening

My app seems to start up properly, with the splash screen and stuff. But when it sleeps for 6 secs and when it supposed to get into the main activity the app crashes any help please?

You cannot start an activity from another thread than the UI thread. To avoid this problem you can use runOnUiThread() :

Android - Change the Image View Source at run time after few seconds

The following code is for a splash screen in my app.What I need to be done is when the activity loads the image should be displayed as default and then after few seconds the image should be changed to another in the same activity. I have another image like the first one with different color. I wanted to change the screen for that image after few seconds.

but the problem is the program stops by executing in the thread saying...
"android.view.ViewRoot$CalledFromWrongThreadException: Only the original thread that created a view hierarchy can touch its views."
How I can achieve this target ? Does anybody please help me to sort out this problem. I am new to android development..

You should use the ImageView's Handler and a Runnable. Handler's are schedulers specific to Android and they can run on the UI thread. Try this:
ImageView imgBus;
MediaPlayer introSound, bellSound;
Runnable swapImage = new Runnable() {
#Override
public void run() {
imgBus.setImageResource(R.drawable.bluekbus);
}
};
And inside onCreate() call:
imgBus = (ImageView) findViewById(R.id.imgBus);
imgBus.setImageResource(R.drawable.blackbus);
imgBus.postDelayed(swapImage, 3000); // Add me!
Understand that splash screens are frowned upon because you should focus on starting the app as soon as possible (while loading the slower element in the background). However sometimes a slight delay is unavoidable.
Write this inside finally

You should always update your UI from the UI Thread itself...
Try the following,
We cannot access and update the UI from worker threads, only we can access the UI from UIThread. If we need it to update with background thread then we can use Handler to do this like in the following code.

Can i have an example of displaying a toast using runOnUiThread.

I searched many places but could not find a complete working example of implementation of "runOnUiThread". I tried a lot , but getting lots of errors .
I just want to display a toast from a thread.

To answer Nefariis question, I had the same problem, and needed to toast from a non-activity class, to solve it you can pass Context to the function your calling runOnUiThread from.
For example:

I run the app and it gets wonky on exit. It locks the handset and causes the battery to run hot. I need to pull the battery physically to reboot. Any thoughts as to why that might be? It runs fantastically on the emulator. Should I be using onFinish instead, or am I not cleaning something up and I'm missing it?

You're doing three obvious things wrong here. 1) You're not killing it and/or pausing it in Activity#onPause. 2) You're not calling setDaemon(true); this will cause the process to continue and not die while this thread is running. 3) you're using a hot loop, i.e., you're not calling Thread#sleep() or some other type of equivalent method there to pause and stop fully using the cpu.
