I am using SherlockFragment to create some taps on my app.
So, I reached at this step where I want to get a view from my XML file because
I am using onCreateView method to get a view(Text View) in the fragment.
I am currently using this code below to get a view and it is working:
#Override
public View onCreateView(LayoutInflater inflater, ViewGroup container,
Bundle savedInstanceState) {
// TODO Auto-generated method stub
TextView northingText = new TextView(getActivity());
northingText.setText("Northing");
RelativeLayout layout = new RelativeLayout(getActivity());
layout.setLayoutParams(new LayoutParams(LayoutParams.FILL_PARENT, LayoutParams.FILL_PARENT));
//layout.setGravity(Gravity.CENTER);
layout.addView(northingText);
return layout;
}
However, I want to use the RelativeLayout to be linked directly to my XML file so that
I get the view.. IE: RelativeLayout layout = new RelativeLayout(My Xml relativeLayout)
The XML file below
<RelativeLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
android:orientation="vertical" android:padding="4dip"
android:id="#+id/Layout"
android:gravity="center_horizontal"
android:layout_width="match_parent" android:layout_height="match_parent">
<TextView
android:id="#+id/textView1"
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_alignLeft="#+id/textView1"
android:layout_below="#+id/textView1"
android:layout_marginTop="31dp"
android:text="#string/northing"
android:textAppearance="?android:attr/textAppearanceMedium"
android:textStyle="bold" />
If i understood you correctly you want to use the xml layout above in your fragment.. use following method:
Place the xml file in layout folder of res.. build your code.. access it in activity via autogenerated R.java and inflate it in oncreateView of fragment
View myFragmentView = inflater.inflate(R.layout.fragmentlayout, container, false);
return myFragmentView;
here fragmentlayout is the name of layout with above xml... and return that in oncreateView ...

I have created a fragment and want to start a dialogue on a button click on which i would display n numbers of texts distributed vertically using Linear layout vertical orientation. To begin with i have created a textview which i am populating dynamically. But i get a null pointer exception saying the any of the layout i referenced here points to NULL.
View view,tempView;
TextView myName, myPhNo, myEmail, myDob;
ImageButton selectRingTone;
#Override
public View onCreateView(LayoutInflater inflater, ViewGroup container,
Bundle savedInstanceState) {
// Inflate the layout for this fragment
view = inflater.inflate(R.layout.fragment_profile, container, false);
tempView = inflater.inflate(R.layout.fragment_selectsong, container, false);
myName = (TextView)view.findViewById(R.id.username);
myPhNo = (TextView)view.findViewById(R.id.userPhNo);
myEmail = (TextView)view.findViewById(R.id.useremailId);
myDob = (TextView)view.findViewById(R.id.userdob);
selectRingTone = (ImageButton)view.findViewById(R.id.selectRingTone);
setUserProfileData();
//setUserTextStatus();
//setUserAudioStatus();
selectRingTone.setOnClickListener(new View.OnClickListener() {
#Override
public void onClick(View v) {
chooseAndSetRingTone();
}
});
return view;
}
private void chooseAndSetRingTone(){
final Dialog fbDialogue = new Dialog(view.getContext(), android.R.style.Theme_Black);
fbDialogue.getWindow().setTitle("Select your audio status song");
fbDialogue.getWindow().setBackgroundDrawable(new ColorDrawable(Color.argb(100, 0, 0, 0)));
fbDialogue.setContentView(R.layout.fragment_selectsong);
getSongsAndFillDialogue();
fbDialogue.setCancelable(true);
fbDialogue.show();
}
private void getSongsAndFillDialogue(){
LayoutInflater inflater = (LayoutInflater)getActivity().getSystemService(Context.LAYOUT_INFLATER_SERVICE);
LinearLayout container = (LinearLayout) tempView.findViewById(R.id.eachRingToneSong);
TextView tv = new TextView(tempView.getContext());
tv.setText("Hi hello");
Button b = new Button(tempView.getContext());
b.setText("abcde");
container.addView(tv);
container.addView(b);
}
XML Code:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<RelativeLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
android:id="#+id/mainLyt"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="match_parent" >
<ScrollView
android:id="#+id/scrollCotainerForRingToneSongs"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content">
<LinearLayout
android:id="#+id/eachRingToneSong"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:orientation="vertical">
<!--<TextView
android:id="#+id/song1"
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:text="abcde"
/>-->
</LinearLayout>
</ScrollView>
</RelativeLayout>
you are creating View for your Dialog in onCreateView method:
tempView = inflater.inflate(R.layout.fragment_selectsong, container, false);
and fulfilling it using getSongsAndFillDialogue method, but you are setting for your Dialog another new instance passing only resource id:
fbDialogue.setContentView(R.layout.fragment_selectsong);
when you are passing just id then Dialog is inflating this layout by itself (just like you). So there are two layouts created, one in Activity - fulfilled, and one created "automatically" by setContentView method, but not touched at all by your methods (so it stays empty)
instead of passing resource id pass already prepared tempView, like below:
fbDialogue.setContentView(tempView);
I want to display a graph in a fragment, but I didn't found many information about how to use GraphView in general. Can someone please help me to display a simple graph?
I started with this: http://android-graphview.org/#doc_createsimplegraph but don't get it working in a fragment.
What I did was to create a fragment_graph.xml:
<LinearLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
android:orientation="vertical" android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="match_parent">
<LinearLayout
android:orientation="vertical"
android:layout_width="fill_parent"
android:layout_height="250dip"
android:id="#+id/graph1"
android:background="#102f65" />
</LinearLayout>
and add the relevant code in the Fragment class:
public class GraphFragment extends Fragment {
#Override
public View onCreateView(LayoutInflater inflater,
ViewGroup container,
Bundle savedInstanceState) {
View view = inflater.inflate(R.layout.fragment_graph, container, false);
// add the data here if necessary
// ...
LinearLayout layout = (LinearLayout) view.findViewById(R.id.graph1);
layout.addView(graphView);
return view;
}
// ...
}
Then you can use the fragment "as is".
Most credit actually goes to vogella.
define a empty LinearLayout with fixed width and height in your layout.xml file and then add the graphview view to it.
Layout
<LinearLayout
android:orientation="vertical"
android:layout_width="fill_parent"
android:layout_height="250dip"
android:id="#+id/graph1" />
Java
LinearLayout layout = (LinearLayout) findViewById(R.id.graph1);
layout.addView(graphView);
Just for the record:
You cannot use it in connection with ScrollViews. If a ScrollView is wrapping your LinearLayout the lib doesn't show anything.
I'm using SherlockFragments in my Android application using the compatibility package. Getting this error for fragments. FATAL EXCEPTION: main
java.lang.IllegalStateException: The specified child already has a parent. You must call removeView() on the child's parent first. I am adding these fragments as tabs in actionbar sherlock. After run the app successfully when i am switching tabs first time it's working fine, in second time it's giving the above error in onCreateView()..
this is the code in onCreate()

return view;

this is the xml code for above fragment
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>

</RelativeLayout>
</RelativeLayout>
this same code i am using for fragments that is working fine without any problems. i am facing problem with fragments only. What is the problem here ? anybody tell
me solution for this.
I think somethings wrong in this part
listview.setLayoutParams(add_lp);
it should be
addView.setLayoutParams(add_lp);
I have a layout called view.xml which contains a View called view_related. Basically, in my dictionary app, if there are related words to an entry, I will replace view_related with a LinearLayout that contains a header "Related entries" and a bunch of TextViews representing every related word.
I keep getting a NullPointerException everytime I'm adding a TextView to the LinearLayout in my Activity's onCreate() method, and I don't understand why though my code looks pretty straightforward.
view.xml
<RelativeLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="match_parent" >
<TextView android:id="#+id/view_header"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:textSize="12pt"
android:textColor="#fff"
android:textStyle="bold"
android:background="#990011"
android:padding="10dp"
android:text="lalala word"
/>
<ScrollView android:id="#+id/view_description"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="match_parent"
android:layout_below="#id/view_header">
<LinearLayout android:id="#+id/view_description_content"
android:orientation="vertical"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content">
<TextView android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:padding="20dp"
android:text="#string/demo_definition"
/>
<!-- THIS WILL BE REPLACED -->
<View android:id="#+id/view_related"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"></View>
</LinearLayout>
</ScrollView>
</RelativeLayout>
view_related.xml, the LinearLayout that will replace the View element in view.xml
<LinearLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
android:id="#+id/view_related_entries"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="match_parent"
android:orientation="vertical" >
<TextView android:id="#+id/view_related_header"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:padding="5dp"
android:textColor="#fff"
android:textStyle="bold"
android:textSize="7pt"
android:background="#000"
android:text="Related entries"
/>
<LinearLayout android:id="#+id/view_related_list"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
>
</LinearLayout>
</LinearLayout>
And finally, the onCreate method, which for now assumes the related entries are "Hello" and "Goodbye:"
protected void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) {
super.onCreate(savedInstanceState);
setContentView(R.layout.view);
LinearLayout ll = (LinearLayout) findViewById(R.id.view_related_list);
TextView tv = new TextView(this);
tv.setText("Hello");
ll.addView(tv); // NULL POINTER EXCEPTION
tv = new TextView(this);
tv.setText("Goodbye");
ll.addView(tv);
LayoutInflater li = (LayoutInflater) getSystemService(LAYOUT_INFLATER_SERVICE);
View view = findViewById(R.id.view_related);
ViewGroup parent = (ViewGroup) view.getParent();
int index = parent.indexOfChild(view);
parent.removeView(view);
View llview = li.inflate(R.id.view_related_entries, parent, false);
parent.addView(llview, index);
}
setContentView(R.layout.view);
LinearLayout ll = (LinearLayout) findViewById(R.id.view_related_list);
The function findViewById only finds views that are actually set. Your current setContentView does not set an xml that has the id you are looking for in it, so the first line I quoted will not result in anything.
You should either load the correct XML, or inflate the view you are looking for with an inflater
the line (LinearLayout ll = (LinearLayout) findViewById(R.id.view_related_list);) will search for view_related_list in view.xml, as in the line before that is the view you are using..
You need to inflate view_related.xml first and then get the view from it..
You're doing a lot of wrong things in your code. First you search for a LinearLayout that isn't in the current layout and also isn't in any inflated layout at that moment. Second, you try to inflate an id reference instead of a layout reference. Last, you should use another approach for what you're trying to do. Your code should be(from what I understood):
protected void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) {
super.onCreate(savedInstanceState);
setContentView(R.layout.view);
LayoutInflater li = (LayoutInflater) getSystemService(LAYOUT_INFLATER_SERVICE);
View view = findViewById(R.id.view_related);
ViewGroup parent = (ViewGroup) view.getParent();
int index = parent.indexOfChild(view);
parent.removeView(view);
View llview = li.inflate(R.layout.view_related, parent, false); // is view_related the name of the extra layout file?
parent.addView(llview, index);
LinearLayout ll = (LinearLayout) findViewById(R.id.view_related_list); // or search for it in llview, llview.findViewById(R.id.view_related_list);
TextView tv = new TextView(this);
tv.setText("Hello");
ll.addView(tv); // NULL POINTER EXCEPTION
tv = new TextView(this);
tv.setText("Goodbye");
ll.addView(tv);
}
This is a situation when you should use a ViewStub to add the new layout file. Although, I don't understand why don't you add the new layout file directly in the view.xml if you're going to add the layout's content in the onCreate method.
i think you need to use setContentView(R.layout.view_related); instead of setContentView(R.layout.view);
or another simple thing you can do is take the linear layout in the same layout "view" and make it invisible when not required and visible when required
You may forgetting to declare your Activity in manifest.xml
How can I add a simple static header to my listview inside a listFragment? I want to create the header from an xml def and add it through inflation.
My onCreateView:
#Override
public View onCreateView(LayoutInflater inflater, ViewGroup container,
Bundle savedInstanceState) {
View detailList = inflater.inflate(R.layout.detail_fragment, container, false);
View detailListHeader = inflater.inflate(R.layout.daily_sales_header, null, false);
container.addView(detailListHeader, 0);
return detailList;
}
This creates the header, but it is not above the listview, rather the listview appears underneath the header, ie the header is overlaying the listview.
Any hints on the correct implementation?
Putting hackbod's description into code for you since his answer created more questions before the answers came. Sometimes I just want the fish. I don't always need to know how the net is made...
To start with, create a layout that looks like this:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<LinearLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
android:id="#+id/myListViewWithHeader"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="match_parent"
android:orientation="vertical" >
<TextView
xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
android:id="#+id/header"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:padding="6dp"
android:textStyle="bold"
android:textSize="20sp" />
<ListView
android:id="#android:id/list"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:drawSelectorOnTop="false" />
<TextView
android:id="#android:id/empty"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content" />
</LinearLayout>
Then, in your onCreateView method you do this:
#Override
public View onCreateView(LayoutInflater inflater, ViewGroup container, Bundle savedInstanceState) {
View view = inflater.inflate(R.layout.myListViewWithHeader, null);
return view;
}
The header can now be populated by doing this:
// get the header view
TextView headerView = (TextView) getView().findViewById(R.id.header);
headerView.setText("Header text goes here");
Notice that my header is a TextView, but it can be replaced with another view if you like. In that case you will need to do a getView().findViewById(R.id.xxxxx) for each view inside the header you want to work with
You should NEVER EVER be adding views directly to the container in onCreateView(). Please read the documentation: http://developer.android.com/reference/android/app/Fragment.html#onCreateView(android.view.LayoutInflater, android.view.ViewGroup, android.os.Bundle)
Also see the various sample code in the Fragment documentation, as well as the API demos: http://developer.android.com/resources/samples/ApiDemos/src/com/example/android/apis/app/index.html
There is nothing special about using a Fragment here. Just build a view hierarchy containing a ListView like you normally would in an Activity or elsewhere. You always need to return one View from onCreateView; this is the root of your hierarchy.
For example you could make the ListView and then use this to add a header to it: http://developer.android.com/reference/android/widget/ListView.html#addHeaderView(android.view.View)
