I have a main layout being hosted by an activity (setContentView method).
I have a button in the layout. I want to be able to click this button and a new layout will slide down from the left/top until the middle of the screen. So, the screen now will have two layouts where one is on top and another one is just beneath it.
This is something like the UI in Android Jelly Bean where you can pull the settings layout down using a touch gesture.
What are the possible implementations?
A method I have tried:
add the slide down layout into main.xml but set its visibility to gone
when button is clicked, run some code that will set the layout visibility to
VISIBLE and add some animations.
the result of this implementation is that this layout will push the rest of the
views down in order to have a "squeeze" space for itself which is not
what I intended to do (see above)
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<RelativeLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="match_parent"
android:orientation="vertical"
android:paddingBottom="5dp"
android:paddingTop="5dp" >
<LinearLayout
android:id="#+id/PR_slidedown" <---this is the intended slidedown layout
android:layout_width="8dp"
android:layout_height="40dp"
android:visibility="gone"
android:orientation="vertical" >
</LinearLayout>
....
Your implementation is partially correct, the other part is to host your two layouts in a FrameLayout so they can overlap with each other. Search for FrameLayout in here, there are a lot of example on how to use it.
Or try the SlidingDrawer

My layout preview doesn't show the action bar only the textviews and buttons I added and when I add a new button or textview, it just goes to the top left corner of the screen even though I tried using Relative and Constraint Layouts. I've tried using "Base.Theme.AppCompat.Light.DarkActionBar" but it doesn't solve it. I've had this issue since I installed android studio on my new PC.Here's a screenshot of my layout preview
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<RelativeLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
xmlns:tools="http://schemas.android.com/tools"
android:layout_width="match_parent" android:layout_height="match_parent">
<Button
android:id="#+id/button"
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:gravity="center"
android:text="Create Account" />
</RelativeLayout>
It's totally normal that your button is on the top left corner if you don't set its position.
If you add this to your Button:
android:layout_centerInParent="true"
Than your Button will be in the center of the root layout.
You can even use ConstraintLayout for this problem. With the help of constraint layout handles you can easily set the button to the centre position.constraint layout centering button
it can be done easily : join right handle first, then left handle, then top and bottom handle.
also with the help of this, layout will not be distorted on different screens
I would like to display on the bottom of the view frame layout which has some layouts inside of the FrameLayout hidden and are displayed after some button click. I would like to display the FrameLayout to start from bottom of the screen above all other views.
How can i do it in the right way please?
Many thanks for any advice.
I have implemented something similar to what you would like to achieve...first of all you should place your entire Activity of Fragment layout inside a CoordinatorLayout. Then you should place the FrameLayout which you want to show above all other views as the last View inside the CoordinatorLayout. You could give the FrameLayout a fixed height(200px) and the same negative value as margin bottom(-200px) so it can not be visible in the first place. And after some button click you can animate your desired view (in this case FrameLayout) to overlap all other views starting from the bottom of the screen.
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<android.support.design.widget.CoordinatorLayout
xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
xmlns:app="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res-auto"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="match_parent"
android:orientation="vertical">
//Your views here
<FrameLayout //Your FrameLayout
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="200px" android:layout_marginBottom="-200px">
//Place whatever views you prefer here
</FrameLayout>
</android.support.design.widget.CoordinatorLayout>
Since Android Support Library 23.2 you can use Materials Bottom Sheets like the Google Map one:
Include the support design library (use the most recent version):
compile 'com.android.support:design:24.1.1'
You are supposed to use a component which is aware of nested scrolling like NestedScrollView (which extends FrameLayout by the way) and RecyclerView inside a CoordinatorLayout and add this behavior to it:
app:layout_behavior="android.support.design.widget.BottomSheetBehavior"
And to make it visible on the bottom just a little:
app:behavior_peekHeight="64dp"
Good day (or evening, or night)
I'm developing an app for android and I'm very curious about one thing. I have an activity, where user chats with another, like "im" chat. There are an EditText on the bottom and some kind of actionbar on the top. What I need is when user enters a message and the software keyboard is on screen, my activity should move up, but the actionbar should still be "glued" to the top of the screen, because it has some valuable controls on it.
Again, that's not an ActionBar, but just a 48dp height layout in a parent vertical linear layout. So I need to know is there an easy way to prevent it from moving to the top, when the layout moves off the screen.
I tried to put everything in a FrameLayout and put this bar on top of it, but on keyboard opens it goes off the screen too...
On you Activity at AndroidManifest you should put this: android:windowSoftInputMode="adjustResize"
Use something like this:
<LinearLayout
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="match_parent"
android:orientation="vertical">
<com.myapp.MyActionBar
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="48dp"/>
<LinearLayout
android:id="#+id/mylayout"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="0dp"
android:layout_weight="1dp"/>
<!-- Add your edittext and button -->
</LinearLayout>
This will make sure the actionbar and edittext + button are allways on screen, and the mylayout takes up the rest of the screen. When your keyboard is shown, the mylayout will shrink.
Try adding android:windowSoftInputMode="adjustResize" to your activity in the manifest. This tells Android to completely resize your layout when the keyboard comes up, rather than pan it. Note that if there isn't enough room for the entire layout this still won't work. But you ought to be able to make it work if your top level layout is a RelativeLayout, with the edit text set to align bottom, the top bar to align top, and the middle section to fill_parent and be above the edit text and below the bar.
use a RelativeLayout as your base Layout and add android:layout_alignParentTop="true" to your action bar to keep it up
<RelativeLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
android:layout_width="fill_parent"
android:layout_height="fill_parent" >
<LinearLayout
android:id="#+id/action_bar_layout"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="48dp"
android:layout_alignParentTop="true" >
</LinearLayout>
<TextView
android:id="#+id/text_view"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_centerInParent="true" />
</RelativeLayout>
My current layout displays activity that is not full screen (that's OK).
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<LinearLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
android:orientation="vertical" android:layout_width="100dip"
android:layout_height="200dip" >
<TextView android:layout_height="wrap_content" android:id="#+id/textView1"
android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:text="#string/hello"></TextView>
I also added android:theme="#android:style/Theme.Translucent" to manifest for my activity.
My 200x100dip activity now shows in the upper left corner. How can i specify position of my linear layout (or my activity)?
You can use either FrameLayout or RelativeLayout as outer most layout for this. Ant then use absolute position in dp or android:layout_centerInParent or similar.
I believe your Activity´s outmost layout element (LinearLayout) will be placed in a FrameLayout that is the parent given from Android. I suggest you let your outmost layout match_parent/fill_parent in layout_height and _width and then center the content inside it with gravity="center" on your outmost layout. By letting the outmost layout being transparent and not catch click element it will appear as layout in the middle where elements behind is visible. If Im correct guessing that's what you want to achieve here.
put that layout in another absolute layout in which you use android:layout_width="fill_parent" and android:layout_height="fill_parent" the other thing you can do is to use this: http://www.droiddraw.org/
you can move your elements around manually with that and it will give you the XML code that is used to do that. I found it very useful in laying out XML in android.
How does Android determine whether to move the layout up when showing the softkeyboard?
Note: I am aware that the activity property android:windowSoftInputMode="adjustResize|adjustResize|adjustUnspecified"
exists, as described here http://developer.android.com/guide/topics/manifest/activity-element.html#wsoft
, but in my case it doesn't seem to have any effect. This is my problem:
I have two activities, pretty much the same layout, but the first one is using a ListView that holds a list of buttons. The second activity holds a scrollview with buttons.
The rest is the same, same number of buttons, same height of elements, etc.
Now, when I press the search button to open the search input bar, in my first activity, the entire layouts gets moved up.
While on the second activity, the layout is not being moved up but the softkeyboard just displays on top of it. This is actually how I want it to behave. How can I achieve the same with my activity that's using the ListView?
In my manifest, initially I didn't specify any android:windowSoftInputMode attribute, but even if I do, it doesn't make any difference; I tried all three values (adjustPan, adjustResize, adjustUndefined, without any difference).
This is my layout:
1) http://pastebin.com/5zzVxjbK
2) http://pastebin.com/KFtPuHvP
Interestingly though: when I set my ListView visibility in my layout 1 (left) to View.INVISIBLE, then the layout doesn not get moved up!
I can achieve this with a RelativeLayout and setting android:windowSoftInputMode="adjustPan" like so:
<RelativeLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:layout_height="fill_parent" >
<include android:id="#+id/Header" layout="#layout/header"
android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:layout_height="wrap_content" />
<ListView android:id="#+id/android:list" android:layout_width="fill_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content" android:layout_below="#id/Header"
android:layout_above="#+id/Footer" />
<include android:id="#id/Footer" layout="#layout/footer"
android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_alignParentBottom="true" />
</RelativeLayout>
You may be able to achive this by setting the footer gravity (or layout_gravity) to "bottom", if you want to keep the LinearLayout, but I am not sure.
