Android canvas issue with resizing based on bitmap drawn - android

I have a custom view that allows me to draw a bitmap on it when it is created, and then the user can draw on it with their finger.
My issue is that the canvas fills the whole width/height of the available area in my layout, but I want it to simply match the size of the bitmap that is drawn so that the user can only draw on the picture. This seems like it needs to be done in onSizeChanged since I need to resize the bitmap if they go to landscape from portrait. etc.
My code:
class DrawingCameraPanel extends View implements OnTouchListener {
public Canvas mCanvas;
private Path mPath;
private Paint mPaint;
private ArrayList<Path> paths = new ArrayList<Path>();
private Bitmap background;
int width;
int height;
public Bitmap getOutputBitmap() {
Bitmap.Config config = Bitmap.Config.RGB_565;
Bitmap bitmap = Bitmap.createBitmap(width, height, config);

onDraw(canvas);

}

Of course, why shouldn't Canvas take all space in the layout if its width and height is (most probably) set to match_parent or fill_parent? (Well, technically: View - it's the View that's adjusting its bounds and the canvas just "follows" them).
I think you're reinventing the wheel here. Instead of writing all of the code yourself, I would suggest to:
Sublass ImageView instead of View.
Call setAdjustViewBounds(true) in the constructor. This is the important part. This will actually change the bounds of the view to match the contained image - it preserves aspect ratio and will ensure the image fits in the space the layout is offering.
Make setBackgroundPic() to simply call ImageView.setImageBitmap() since the background on which the user draws is image source from ImageView perspective.
Leave all the drawing code as is - i.e. the OnTouchListener implementation.
What is cool here is that the your custom view is now automatically resized. So, you don't have to worry about the bounds in which the user is allowed to paint because they will be set for you.

Erase drawing in canvas

I have written an Android application with a Canvas for drawing with a stylus. It works well. When I'm pushing the upper function key of my stylus I would like to erase the drawing by brushing over the text. The normal drawing is in black, so I thought to do the erase with white (on top of the black line). My problem is that all lines change the color when I press the upper function key of the stylus (i.e. all lines are then white) instead of just painting the new draw line in white.
Another option would be to delete elements from the path for the erase. If somebody has a solution for this, I would be happy too.
The layout looks as follows:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<android.support.constraint.ConstraintLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
xmlns:app="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res-auto"
xmlns:tools="http://schemas.android.com/tools"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="match_parent"
android:background="#ffffff"
tools:context="StylusBaselineA">
<inf.ethz.ch.affectivestudy.CanvasView
android:id="#+id/baselineACanvas"
android:layout_width="fill_parent"
android:layout_height="fill_parent"
android:textColor="#FFFFFF" />
</android.support.constraint.ConstraintLayout>
The CanvasView class look as follows:
public class CanvasView extends View {

Question:
Normal painting and undo / redo can be performed perfectly. However, the eraser does not work.
After pressing (touch_start) the eraser button and touch the screen, all the previous drawn line immediately turn black.
When using the eraser upon touch_move , the eraser itself is drawing black lines, even though it was on CLEAR mode.
Upon touch_up, All other drawn lines maintained at black color. The "erased" area was also in black color. However, when drawing a new path subsequently, the original line turned to their original color, the area "erased" by the eraser turn its color to the last color chosen and the paths retained in the View.
How could the code on eraser be written in a proper way? (keeping undo / redo)
Thanks a lot in advance!
It's hard to answer your question, but. I'd implement the erase functionality as follows:
The erase function will by simple white path. So the erase mode means that you are drawing white path which will be wider than the drawing path. This way you will be able to select even the width of the eraser and the undo/redo functionality will stay the same.
Try this type of application with samsung spen sdk, all this funtions are simplified there.

Try this solution - works great with undo/redo as well:
private float blur = 0F;
case R.id.eraserBtn:
Constants.mPaint.setColor(Color.WHITE); // or whatever color to match canvas color
Constants.mPaint.setShadowLayer(this.blur, 0F, 0F, Color.WHITE);
With this solution, no need to set:
Constants.mPaint.setXfermode(null);

Adding Button Programmatically to Layout with a Custom View hides the button

I have a Custom View on which I have to draw with my finger(like in the FingerPaint example).
I've tried to add a button below this view programmatically by Making a LinearLayout and adding the required views to it.
However, I cannot see the button itself.
I understand this is a problem due to my implementation of onMeasure, since if I revert to the default, the button is displayed but the view is not.

How to change paint color/stroke after implementing UNDO function in canvas paint

In my Paint App I have implemented UNDO function and it's working fine. But if a change the paint brush color (or) paint brush stroke then all my previous drawn paths changing to the new paint color. The code is as follows:
public class CustomView extends View implements OnTouchListener {
public Canvas mCanvas;
private Path mPath;
public Paint mPaint, mBitmapPaint;
Bitmap mBitmap;
Canvas canvas;
public ArrayList<Path> paths = new ArrayList<Path>();
public ArrayList<Path> undonePaths = new ArrayList<Path>();
private Bitmap im;
public CustomView(Context context) {
super(context);
setFocusable(true);
setFocusableInTouchMode(true);
setOnTouchListener(this);
mPaint = new Paint();
mPaint.setAntiAlias(true);
mPaint.setDither(true);
mPaint.setColor(0xFFFFFFFF);
mPaint.setStyle(Paint.Style.STROKE);
mPaint.setStrokeJoin(Paint.Join.ROUND);
mPaint.setStrokeCap(Paint.Cap.ROUND);
mPaint.setStrokeWidth(6);
mCanvas = new Canvas();
mPath = new Path();
im = BitmapFactory.decodeResource(context.getResources(), R.drawable.ic_launcher);
DisplayMetrics metrics = getContext().getResources().getDisplayMetrics();
int w = metrics.widthPixels;
int h = metrics.heightPixels;
mBitmap = Bitmap.createBitmap(w, h, Bitmap.Config.ARGB_8888);
mBitmapPaint = new Paint(Paint.DITHER_FLAG);
// mBitmapPaint.setXfermode(new PorterDuffXfermode(PorterDuff.Mode.SRC));
}
#Override
protected void onSizeChanged(int w, int h, int oldw, int oldh) {
super.onSizeChanged(w, h, oldw, oldh);
}
#Override
protected void onDraw(Canvas canvas) {
// mPath = new Path();
// canvas.drawPath(mPath, mPaint);
canvas.drawColor(Color.TRANSPARENT);
canvas.drawBitmap(mBitmap, 0, 0, mBitmapPaint);
for (Path p : paths) {
canvas.drawPath(p, mPaint);
}
canvas.drawPath(mPath, mPaint);
}
private float mX, mY;
private static final float TOUCH_TOLERANCE = 4;
private void touch_start(float x, float y) {
undonePaths.clear();
mPath.reset();
mPath.moveTo(x, y);
mX = x;
mY = y;
}
private void touch_move(float x, float y) {
float dx = Math.abs(x - mX);
float dy = Math.abs(y - mY);
if (dx >= TOUCH_TOLERANCE || dy >= TOUCH_TOLERANCE) {
mPath.quadTo(mX, mY, (x + mX) / 2, (y + mY) / 2);
mX = x;
mY = y;
}
}
private void touch_up() {
mPath.lineTo(mX, mY);
// commit the path to our offscreen
mCanvas.drawPath(mPath, mPaint);
// kill this so we don't double draw
paths.add(mPath);
mPath = new Path();
}
public void onClickUndo() {
if (paths.size() > 0) {
undonePaths.add(paths.remove(paths.size() - 1));
invalidate();
} else {
}
// toast the user
}
public void onClickRedo() {
if (undonePaths.size() > 0) {
paths.add(undonePaths.remove(undonePaths.size() - 1));
invalidate();
} else {
}
// toast the user
}
#Override
public boolean onTouch(View arg0, MotionEvent event) {
float x = event.getX();
float y = event.getY();
switch (event.getAction()) {
case MotionEvent.ACTION_DOWN:
touch_start(x, y);
invalidate();
break;
case MotionEvent.ACTION_MOVE:
touch_move(x, y);
invalidate();
break;
case MotionEvent.ACTION_UP:
touch_up();
invalidate();
break;
}
return true;
}
}
This is an old question, but I wanted to leave an answer for anyone that comes here. The solution is to keep track of separate Paint instances for each stroke (there should be exactly 1 Paint object per Path object).
Change your touch_up method to reset the mPaint, in addition to resetting the mPath.
private void touch_up() {
mPath.lineTo(mX, mY);
mCanvas.drawPath(mPath, mPaint);
paths.add(mPath);
mPath = new Path();
mPaints.add(mPaint)
// Creates a new Paint reference, but keeps the previous state (color, width, etc.)
mPaint = new Paint(mPaint);
}
Then your onDraw method looks something like this.
for (int i = 0; i < mPaths.size(); i++) {
canvas.drawPath(mPaths.get(i), mPaints.get(i));
}

Android Canvas Paint Signature Application

I am working on android paint signature application where it has the flexibility to clear the paint and save the canvas as bitmap image. I am facing an issue in this app, whenever i want to save the canvas as bitmap i need to check whether the signature is lengthy enough or not.
If the signature is too short them i have to ask the user to put a signature again. The following is my code:
There are two classes in this.
FingerPaintActivity
public class FingerPaintActivity extends Activity implements OnClickListener{
private Button clearBtn, saveBtn;
private View myView;
#Override
protected void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) {
super.onCreate(savedInstanceState);
setContentView(R.layout.main);
myView = findViewById(R.id.myView);
clearBtn = (Button) findViewById(R.id.clearBtn);
clearBtn.setOnClickListener(this);
saveBtn = (Button) findViewById(R.id.submitBtn);
saveBtn.setOnClickListener(this);
}
#Override
public void onClick(View v) {
if (v == clearBtn) {
MyView.clearCanvas();
myView.invalidate();
myView.refreshDrawableState();
} else {
myView.setDrawingCacheEnabled(true);
myView.measure(MeasureSpec.makeMeasureSpec(0, MeasureSpec.UNSPECIFIED), MeasureSpec.makeMeasureSpec(0, MeasureSpec.UNSPECIFIED));
myView.layout(0, 0, myView.getWidth(), myView.getHeight());
myView.buildDrawingCache(true);
Bitmap bm = Bitmap.createBitmap(myView.getDrawingCache());
myView.setDrawingCacheEnabled(false);
if (bm != null) {
try {
String path = Environment.getExternalStorageDirectory().toString();
OutputStream fOut = null;
File file = new File(path, "screentest.jpg");
fOut = new FileOutputStream(file);
bm.compress(Bitmap.CompressFormat.JPEG, 85, fOut);
fOut.flush();
fOut.close();
Log.e("ImagePath", "Image Path : " + MediaStore.Images.Media.insertImage( getContentResolver(), file.getAbsolutePath(), file.getName(), file.getName()));
sendBroadcast(new Intent(Intent.ACTION_MEDIA_MOUNTED, Uri.parse("file://"+ Environment.getExternalStorageDirectory())));
}
catch (Exception e) {
e.printStackTrace();
}
}
}
}
}
This is the second class:
MyView
public class MyView extends View {
// private static final float MINP = 0.25f;
// private static final float MAXP = 0.75f;
private Bitmap mBitmap;
private static Canvas mCanvas;
private Path mPath;
private Paint mBitmapPaint;
private Paint mPaint;
public MyView(Context c) {
super(c);
}
public MyView(Context context, AttributeSet attrs) {
super(context, attrs);
mPaint = new Paint();
mPaint.setAntiAlias(true);
mPaint.setDither(true);
mPaint.setColor(Color.BLACK);
mPaint.setStyle(Paint.Style.STROKE);
mPaint.setStrokeJoin(Paint.Join.ROUND);
mPaint.setStrokeCap(Paint.Cap.ROUND);
mPaint.setStrokeWidth(6);
mBitmap = Bitmap.createBitmap(320, 480, Bitmap.Config.ARGB_8888);
mCanvas = new Canvas(mBitmap);
mPath = new Path();
mBitmapPaint = new Paint(Paint.DITHER_FLAG);
}
public MyView(Context context, AttributeSet attrs, int defStyle) {
super(context, attrs, defStyle);
}
#Override
protected void onSizeChanged(int w, int h, int oldw, int oldh) {
super.onSizeChanged(w, h, oldw, oldh);
}
#Override
protected void onDraw(Canvas canvas) {
canvas.drawColor(0xFFAAAAAA);
canvas.drawBitmap(mBitmap, 0, 0, mBitmapPaint);
canvas.drawPath(mPath, mPaint);
}
private float mX, mY;
private static final float TOUCH_TOLERANCE = 4;
private void touch_start(float x, float y) {
mPath.reset();
mPath.moveTo(x, y);
mX = x;
mY = y;
}
private void touch_move(float x, float y) {
float dx = Math.abs(x - mX);
float dy = Math.abs(y - mY);
if (dx >= TOUCH_TOLERANCE || dy >= TOUCH_TOLERANCE) {
mPath.quadTo(mX, mY, (x + mX) / 2, (y + mY) / 2);
mX = x;
mY = y;
}
}
private void touch_up() {
mPath.lineTo(mX, mY);
// commit the path to our offscreen
mCanvas.drawPath(mPath, mPaint);
// kill this so we don't double draw
mPath.reset();
}
#Override
public boolean onTouchEvent(MotionEvent event) {
float x = event.getX();
float y = event.getY();
switch (event.getAction()) {
case MotionEvent.ACTION_DOWN:
touch_start(x, y);
invalidate();
break;
case MotionEvent.ACTION_MOVE:
touch_move(x, y);
invalidate();
break;
case MotionEvent.ACTION_UP:
touch_up();
invalidate();
break;
}
return true;
}
public static void clearCanvas() {
Paint paint = new Paint();
paint.setXfermode(new PorterDuffXfermode(Mode.CLEAR));
mCanvas.drawPaint(paint);
paint.setXfermode(new PorterDuffXfermode(Mode.SRC));
}
}
The only problem i am facing is while saving the signature i have to check the size of bitmap or canvas or paint before saving it. i don't know which one to check for
If anyone has idea please help me out.
A simple approach would be to sum up the distances between touch coordinates, and only accept the signature if the sum is greater than a certain threshold.
So, keep a running sum of the total distance drawn in touch_move()
mTotal += Math.sqrt(Math.pow(dx, 2) + Math.pow(dy, 2));
then later on
if(mTotal >= MINIMUM_SIGNATURE_LENGTH)
{
acceptSignature();
}
