Play TTS over BlueTooth - android

I have a little app where I want to be able to send TTS audio to speaker or bluetooth headset if connected. It is working fine in the speaker phone mode, but no luck with BT. Any idea how this could be addressed? Code snippet is below:'
private void speak(String s){
HashMap<String, String> hash = new HashMap<String, String>();
hash.put(TextToSpeech.Engine.KEY_PARAM_STREAM, String.valueOf(AudioManager.STREAM_SYSTEM));
AudioManager audioManager = (AudioManager) getSystemService(AUDIO_SERVICE);
audioManager.setMode(AudioManager.MODE_NORMAL);
audioManager.startBluetoothSco();
audioManager.setBluetoothScoOn(true);
tts.speak(s, TextToSpeech.QUEUE_ADD, hash);
}
'

Use my answer at Using the Android RecognizerIntent with a bluetooth headset
In your activity that you declare private void speak(String s) add the a class member
BluetoothHeadsetUtils mBluetoothHelper;
TelephonyManager mTelManager;
MyPhoneStateListener mPhoneStateListener = new MyPhoneStateListener();
On this same activity onCreate() add
#Override
public void onCreate()
{
mBluetoothHelper = new BluetoothHeadsetUtils(this);
mTelManager = (TelephonyManager) getSystemService(Context.TELEPHONY_SERVICE);
mTelManager.listen(mPhoneStateListener, PhoneStateListener.LISTEN_CALL_STATE);
}
And onResume() and onPause of the activity add
#Override
onResume()
{
mBluetoothHelper.start();
}
#Override
onPause()
{
mBluetoothHelper.stop();
}
You can define your speak(String s) as
public void speak(String s, String utteranceId) // utteranceId can be an empty string
{
HashMap<String, String> myHashRender = new HashMap<String, String>();
myHashRender.put(TextToSpeech.Engine.KEY_PARAM_UTTERANCE_ID, utteranceId);
if (mBluetoothHelper.isOnHeadsetSco())
{
myHashRender.put(TextToSpeech.Engine.KEY_PARAM_STREAM,
String.valueOf(AudioManager.STREAM_VOICE_CALL));
}
tts.speak(s, TextToSpeech.QUEUE_ADD, myHashRender);
}
Instead of broadcast receiver use phone state listener
protected class MyPhoneStateListener extends PhoneStateListener
{
#Override
public void onCallStateChanged(int state, String incomingNumber)
{
switch (state)
{
case TelephonyManager.CALL_STATE_RINGING:
mAudioManager.setStreamMute(AudioManager.STREAM_RING, true);
speak("whatever you want here", "ringing"); //$NON-NLS-1$
Log.d(TAG, "ringing cancel recognizer"); //$NON-NLS-1$
break;
case TelephonyManager.CALL_STATE_OFFHOOK:
Log.d(TAG, "offhook cancel recognizer"); //$NON-NLS-1$
break;
case TelephonyManager.CALL_STATE_IDLE:
new Thread(new Runnable()
{
#Override
public void run()
{
try
{
Thread.sleep(2000);
}
catch (InterruptedException e)
{
}
mBluetoothHelper.start();
}
}).start();
Log.d(TAG, "call state idle"); //$NON-NLS-1$
}
}
}
In your activity or service add implement OnUtteranceCompletedListener and add the code below
#Override
public void onUtteranceCompleted(String utteranceId)
{
if (utteranceId.equals("ringing"))
{
mAudioManager.setStreamMute(AudioManager.STREAM_RING, false);
mBluetoothHelper.stop();
}
}

I want to make a phone call in the background when a first call ends

I am developing an application in the background and I want it to call back automatically when a first call ends, but I don't know how to do it.
I have a Broadcast receiver but it doesnt work
public void onReceive(Context context, Intent intent) {
String tel = MainActivity.Leer(context, "Telefono");
if (intent.getStringExtra(TelephonyManager.EXTRA_STATE).equals(TelephonyManager.EXTRA_STATE_RINGING)) {
TelephonyManager telephony = (TelephonyManager)context.getSystemService(Context.TELEPHONY_SERVICE);
telephony.listen(new PhoneStateListener(){
#Override
public void onCallStateChanged(int state, String incomingNumber) {
super.onCallStateChanged(state, incomingNumber);
if (tel.equals(incomingNumber)){
show(context, "El telefono registrado esta llamando");
Handler handler = new Handler();
handler.postDelayed(new Runnable() {
#Override
public void run() {
Intent i = new Intent(context.getApplicationContext(), Ubicacion.class);
context.startService(i);
}
}, 8000);
}
}
},PhoneStateListener.LISTEN_CALL_STATE);
} else if (intent.getStringExtra(TelephonyManager.EXTRA_STATE).equals(TelephonyManager.EXTRA_STATE_IDLE)) {
System.out.println("La llamada finalizo");
llamar(context);
}
}
private void llamar(Context context){
String number = "1111111111";
String dial = "tel:"+ number;
context.startActivity(new Intent(Intent.ACTION_CALL, Uri.parse(dial)).setFlags(Intent.FLAG_ACTIVITY_NEW_TASK));
}

Restart SpeechRecognizer using onUtteranceProgressListener

I've been working on this code for weeks with no progress at all, even though it seems like such an easy fix!! Basically I am using TextToSpeech with SpeechRecognizer in order to have the app ask me a question and then listen for my answer. Here's my code... I'm thinking its a thread problem or something.
Basically when I hold down the button, SPeechRecognizer starts listening until i take away finger... this works fine.. but I programmatically want the SpeechRecognizer to start up again after Utterance is Completed or simulate a button press to get it to work but neither works...
public class MainActivity extends AppCompatActivity {

According to the UtteranceProgressListener docs, "The callbacks specified in this method can be called from multiple threads."
To verify this, you can add
boolean wasCalledFromBackgroundThread = (Thread.currentThread().getId() != 1);
Log.i("XXX", "was onDone() called on a background thread? : " + wasCalledFromBackgroundThread);
to the onDone() method body.
In my experience, they are called on background threads more often than not.
So, inside your onDone() method body, I would suggest surrounding the UI manipulation with runOnUiThread() like so:
#Override
public void onDone(String utteranceId) {
runOnUiThread(new Runnable() {
#Override
public void run() {
// possible method one:
SimulateButton.performClick();
// possible method two:
//mSpeechRecognizer.startListening(mSpeechRecognizerIntent);
}
});
}

Loop SpeechRecognizer in Android [duplicate]

I have managed to get continuous speech recognition working (using the SpeechRecognizer class) as a service on all Android versions up to 4.1. My question concerns getting it working on versions 4.1 and 4.2 as it is known there is a problem in that the API doesn't do as documented in that a few seconds after voice recognition is started, if no voice input has been detected then it's as if the speech recogniser dies silently. (http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=37883)
I have found a question which proposes a work-around to this problem (Voice Recognition stops listening after a few seconds), but I am unsure as how to implement the Handler required for this solution. I am aware of the 'beep' that will happen every few seconds that this workaround will cause, but getting continuous voice recognition is more important for me.
If anyone has any other alternative workarounds then I'd like to hear those too.
This is a work around for android version 4.1.1.

02/16/2013 - Fix beep sound if you use Text To Speech in your app make sure to turn off Solo stream in onResults
If you really want to implement continuous listening without internet connection you need to consider third-party packages, one of them is CMUSphinx, check Pocketsphinx android demo for example how to listen for keyword efficiently in offline and react on the specific commands like a key phrase "oh mighty computer". The code to do that is simple:
you create a recognizer and just add keyword spotting search:
recognizer = defaultSetup()
.setAcousticModel(new File(modelsDir, "hmm/en-us-semi"))
.setDictionary(new File(modelsDir, "lm/cmu07a.dic"))
.setKeywordThreshold(1e-5f)
.getRecognizer();
recognizer.addListener(this);
recognizer.addKeywordSearch(KWS_SEARCH_NAME, KEYPHRASE);
switchSearch(KWS_SEARCH_NAME);
and define a listener:
#Override
public void onPartialResult(Hypothesis hypothesis) {
String text = hypothesis.getHypstr();
if (text.equals(KEYPHRASE))
// do something
}
For any of you who are trying to silence the beep sound, regrading the #HoanNguyen answer which is very good but be careful as said in the api set setStreamSolo is cumulative so if there is in error in the speech recognition and on error is called(for example no internet connection) then setStremSolo true is called again and again which will result in your app silencing the whole phone (very bad)! the solution to that is to add the setStremMute(false) to the speechRecognizer onError.
check out my demo app :
https://github.com/galrom/ContinuesVoiceRecognition
I recommand to use both PockeySphix and SpeechRecognizer.

Running Android Speech Recognition as Service: will not start

I'm using the solution here: Android Speech Recognition as a service on Android 4.1 & 4.2 The code below gets to the onStartCommand() method, however the speech recogntion never seems to kick off, as evidenced by the fact that the onReadyForSpeech() method is never called.
UPDATE:
So I added and that allowed the onReadyForSpeech() to be called , BUT onError() is called with error code: 6 after the onReadyForSpeech() method is complete (this goes into a continuous loop because the start listening code is started again after onError() is called). Like Hoan Nguyen states below, error code 6 is ERROR_SPEECH_TIMEOUT BUT I never see a speech recognition dialog come up so I know to start speaking. I also tried to start speaking immediately after kicking off this code without that dialog coming and still get error code 6, what am I doing wrong here?
UPDATE (9-06-13):
Like Hoan stated, there is no dialog that comes up. You just start talking as soon as listening is called. But I ran into another issue where trying to restart the listener after every onResult() is called...That issue and the complete code for this can be found here: Android Speech Speech Recognition: Repeated Calling of SpeechRecognizer.startListening() fails on JB 4.1.2
