Tesseract - Help me understand datapath - android

Can someone explain what exactly is going on and how I can rectify it. So I understand tesseract has to have an image to target and presumably this would be the bitmap I've captured and tried to save. That saved location would be my _path variable. Now what is the DATA_PATH for tesseract? Does the image need to be stored in a folder called 'tesseract' ? Do I create that folder and store some kind of training in it? I'm looking for an explanation rather than a code example.
http://gaut.am/making-an-ocr-android-app-using-tesseract/ - I am trying to follow this tutorial and checking others to try and understand the paths which all of them use.

Android Opening Front Camera by default

I am very new to android and for some reason I have to implement a code that would let open the front camera by default instead of rear camera. My minimum SDK is API 9 and Target SDK is API 21. I have a PicturePlugin.Java file and the code is:
public class PicturePlugin extends CordovaPlugin
{
private String callback="data";
private int IMAGE_TAKEN=1;
private CallbackContext callbackContext;
private String TAG="FilePlugin";
private int imageWidth,imageHeight;
private String imagePath;
private File destImageFile;
private String mode = "BACK";
private static String timeStamp = new SimpleDateFormat("yyyyMMdd_HHmmss",
Locale.getDefault()).format(new Date());
CameraManager manager;
private static final String TAG1 = null ;
public boolean execute(String action, JSONArray args, CallbackContext callbackContext)
{
this.callbackContext = callbackContext;
this.cordova.getActivity().getApplicationContext().getPackageName();
try
{
JSONObject object=(JSONObject) args.get(0);

Do not forget to add permission to use front camera in your manifest.xml.
it will be:
<uses-feature android:name="android.hardware.camera.front" /> <!-- used this feature to open the front camera -->
This Code Help you
private Camera openFrontFacingCameraGingerbread() {
int cameraCount = 0;
Camera cam = null;
Camera.CameraInfo cameraInfo = new Camera.CameraInfo();
cameraCount = Camera.getNumberOfCameras();
for (int camIdx = 0; camIdx<cameraCount; camIdx++) {
Camera.getCameraInfo(camIdx, cameraInfo);
if (cameraInfo.facing == Camera.CameraInfo.CAMERA_FACING_FRONT) {
try {
cam = Camera.open(camIdx);
} catch (RuntimeException e) {
Log.e("Your_TAG", "Camera failed to open: " + e.getLocalizedMessage());
}
}
}
return cam;
}
With add this permission in your app
<uses-permission android:name="android.permission.CAMERA" />
<uses-feature android:name="android.hardware.camera" android:required="false" />
<uses-feature android:name="android.hardware.camera.front" android:required="false" />
This might help.
For the full code https://github.com/googlesamples/android-Camera2Basic
Get the front or back lens by:
Activity activity = getActivity();
CameraManager manager = (CameraManager) activity.getSystemService(Context.CAMERA_SERVICE);
try {
for (String cameraId : manager.getCameraIdList()) {
CameraCharacteristics characteristics
= manager.getCameraCharacteristics(cameraId);
// Choose front or back lens
Integer facing = characteristics.get(CameraCharacteristics.LENS_FACING);
if (facing != null && facing == CameraCharacteristics.LENS_FACING_BACK) {
continue;
}
We can not see the json object you are parsing, if this condition is met,
object.getString("mode").equals("FRONT")
then your code is looking for the cameras and opening the front one...

Error saving video Uri to SD card

I am trying to save a video from VideoView to the SD card, by touching the VideoView. No errors in LogCat, but my Toast I set up says "Error during video saving", which tells me my boolean I set up did not get to the part where it's set to true. It must be in the file I/O part. One part that works though, is a directory does get created, but the file itself is not found in the directory, it's empty.
Any mistakes anyone sees?
I will post my two main methods that are important, then below I'll post the whole class.
UPDATE: Here is my working code (changed a couple lines in the saveVideo method.)
// save your video to SD card
protected void saveVideo(final Uri uriVideo){
// click the video to save it
mVideoView.setOnTouchListener(new View.OnTouchListener() {
public boolean onTouch(View v, MotionEvent event) {
boolean success = false;
// make the directory
File vidDir = new File(android.os.Environment.getExternalStoragePublicDirectory
(Environment.DIRECTORY_MOVIES) + File.separator + "Saved iCute Videos");
vidDir.mkdirs();
// create unique identifier
Random generator = new Random();
int n = 100;
n = generator.nextInt(n);
// create file name
String videoName = "Video_" + n + ".mp4";
File fileVideo = new File(vidDir.getAbsolutePath(), videoName);
try {
fileVideo.createNewFile();
success = true;
} catch (IOException e) {
e.printStackTrace();
}
if (success) {
Toast.makeText(getApplicationContext(), "Video saved!",
Toast.LENGTH_LONG).show();
} else {
Toast.makeText(getApplicationContext(),
"Error during video saving", Toast.LENGTH_LONG).show();
}
return true;
}
});
}
My old, unworking saveVideo() method.
// save your video to SD card
protected void saveVideo(final Uri uriVideo){
// click the video to save it
mVideoView.setOnTouchListener(new View.OnTouchListener() {
public boolean onTouch(View v, MotionEvent event) {
String sourceVideoName = uriVideo.getPath();
boolean success = false;
BufferedInputStream bis = null;
BufferedOutputStream bos = null;
// make the directory
File vidDir = new File(android.os.Environment.getExternalStoragePublicDirectory
(Environment.DIRECTORY_MOVIES) + File.separator + "Saved iCute Videos");
vidDir.mkdirs();
// create unique identifier
Random generator = new Random();
int n = 100;
n = generator.nextInt(n);
// create file name
String videoName = "Video_" + n + ".mp4";
fileVideo = new File(vidDir.getPath(), videoName);
try {
bis = new BufferedInputStream(new FileInputStream(sourceVideoName));
bos = new BufferedOutputStream(new FileOutputStream(fileVideo, false));
byte[] buf = new byte[8192];
bis.read(buf);
do {
bos.write(buf);
} while (bis.read(buf) != 0);
success = true;
} catch (IOException e) {
}finally {
try {
if (bis != null) bis.close();
if (bos != null) bos.close();
} catch (IOException e) {
}
}
if (success) {
Toast.makeText(getApplicationContext(), "Video saved!",
Toast.LENGTH_LONG).show();
} else {
Toast.makeText(getApplicationContext(),
"Error during video saving", Toast.LENGTH_LONG).show();
}
return true;
}
});
}
My dispatchTakeVideoIntent() method. I commented out some code that might be needed... I kept getting a null pointer though on fileUri line (was it from fileUri or fileVideo?), so not sure why.
// Captures video from Android camera component
protected void dispatchTakeVideoIntent() {

if (takeVideoIntent.resolveActivity(getPackageManager()) != null) {
// // set name of video
// Uri fileUri = Uri.fromFile(fileVideo);
// takeVideoIntent.putExtra(MediaStore.EXTRA_OUTPUT, fileUri);
// set the video image quality to high
takeVideoIntent.putExtra(MediaStore.EXTRA_VIDEO_QUALITY, 1);
startActivityForResult(takeVideoIntent, ACTION_TAKE_VIDEO);
}
}

Android camera saving images with wrong orientation

I have a camera app that uses only the portrait mode (restricted via android manifest file). Following code is my SurfaceView used for the Camera

When the application saves an an images (taken in portrait mode) It will be saved upside down. But in landscape mode it saves the image correctly. And as I have mentioned, the app has restricted the orientation to portrait mode only.
Also I tried to change EXIF within the Activity (Actually I am using a Fragment) data of the image file once it been saved, and then recreate the bitmap with new exif data using the following code, but still no success
private Bitmap changeExifData(String imagePath){
Bitmap correctBmp = null;
try {
File f = new File(imagePath);
ExifInterface exif = new ExifInterface(f.getPath());
int orientation = exif.getAttributeInt(ExifInterface.TAG_ORIENTATION, ExifInterface.ORIENTATION_NORMAL);
int angle = 0;
if (orientation == ExifInterface.ORIENTATION_ROTATE_90) {
angle = 90;
}
else if (orientation == ExifInterface.ORIENTATION_ROTATE_180) {
angle = 180;
}
else if (orientation == ExifInterface.ORIENTATION_ROTATE_270) {
angle = 270;
}
Matrix mat = new Matrix();
mat.postRotate(angle);
Bitmap bmp = BitmapFactory.decodeStream(new FileInputStream(f), null, null);
correctBmp = Bitmap.createBitmap(bmp, 0, 0, bmp.getWidth(), bmp.getHeight(), mat, true);
}
catch (IOException e) {
Log.w("TAG", "-- Error in setting image");
}
catch(OutOfMemoryError oom) {
Log.w("TAG", "-- OOM Error in setting image");
}
return correctBmp;
}
Your help is greatly appreciated.
Here is how I solved it (full implementation that includes saving the image). Image taken in in portrait mode will be rotated 90 degrees.

Android version with tesseract-android-tools-library

I have developed one OCR application which works perfectly on Android version 4.0 but not on 2.2 and 2.3 Android version. I don't know what's the problem with this versions. I searched a lot on Google but no reason found.

Force Close After Run Android Simple OCR Aplication

I've follow this tutorial to learn about ocr in android.
http://gaut.am/making-an-ocr-android-app-using-tesseract/
After successfully run the program on my device, take a photo, it force close. As if it failed to analyze the image.
I already put the trained data on my /asset/testdata/
the trained data is downloaded from :
http://code.google.com/p/tesseract-ocr/downloads/list
My logcat show that I've error on
java.lang.ExceptionInInitializerError
Can you teach me how to fix it?

Do you have this in your AndroidManifest.xml?:
<uses-permission android:name="WRITE_EXTERNAL_STORAGE" />
I notice that you're trying to create files/directories during initialization, maybe this will help
Can you try to add System.loadLibrary("tess"); before initializing tesseract-ocr?
