Android - Contact ID from Phone Number - multiple numbers case - android

I would like to get the ID of the contact by a given phone number. I'm aware of the well known solutions using
Uri.withAppendedPath(ContactsContract.PhoneLookup.CONTENT_FILTER_URI, Uri.encode(phone_number));
my problem is that it does not work if a contact has more than one number of the same type in its details. e.g. two mobile numbers Then I get nothing back in the cursor from the content resolver.
Is anything known about this?

This is what i did:
if (c.getCount() > 0)
{
while (c.moveToNext())
{
String id = cur.getString(c.getColumnIndex(ContactsContract.Contacts._ID));
String name = cur.getString(cur.getColumnIndex(ContactsContract.Contacts.DISPLAY_NAME));
if (Integer.parseInt(cur.getString(cur.getColumnIndex(ContactsContract.Contacts.HAS_PHONE_NUMBER))) > 0)
{
System.out.println("name : " + name + ", ID : " + id);
// get the phone number
Cursor pCur = cr.query(ContactsContract.CommonDataKinds.Phone.CONTENT_URI,null,
ContactsContract.CommonDataKinds.Phone.CONTACT_ID +" = ?",
new String[]{id}, null);
while (pCur.moveToNext())
{
String phone = pCur.getString(
pCur.getColumnIndex(ContactsContract.CommonDataKinds.Phone.NUMBER));
System.out.println("phone" + phone);
}
pCur.close();
// get email and type
Cursor emailCur = cr.query(
ContactsContract.CommonDataKinds.Email.CONTENT_URI,
null,
ContactsContract.CommonDataKinds.Email.CONTACT_ID + " = ?",
new String[]{id}, null);
while (emailCur.moveToNext()) {
// This would allow you get several email addresses
// if the email addresses were stored in an array
String email = emailCur.getString(

}
Hope this proves helpful to you.

Strange that
`ContactsContract.PhoneLookup._ID = ContactsContract.CommonDataKinds.Phone.CONTACT_ID`
You can try the following, first get the phone_number in the right format (the various format methods of the PhoneNumberUtils class does not help)
Uri lookupUri = Uri.withAppendedPath(ContactsContract.PhoneLookup.CONTENT_FILTER_URI, Uri.encode(phone_number));
Cursor cursor = context.getContentResolver().query(lookupUri,
new String[]{ContactsContract.PhoneLookup.NUMBER},
ContactsContract.PhoneLookup.NUMBER + "=?",
new String[] { phone_number}, null);
if (cursor.moveToFirst()
{
phone_number = cursor.getString(0);
}
The above give you back the same number but with the format that makes the code below works. So now pass the formatted phone_number to the code below
String[] projection = {ContactsContract.CommonDataKinds.Phone._ID}
String selection = ContactsContract.CommonDataKinds.Phone.NUMBER + "=?";
String[] selectionArgs = {phone_number};
return context.getContentResolver().query(ContactsContract.CommonDataKinds.Phone.CONTENT_URI,
projection, selection, selectionArgs, null);

Android Contacts - How can I programmatically find all possible account types & names

When saving android contacts, they must be saved under a certain account. This can be determined by using account type (Sim, Device, Google account) and also Account Name (If account type google is chosen, possible account names are John#gmail.com, zoe#gmail.com)
My question is, how can I find all of the possible accounts such as these at runtime?
Try this code

What is the best way to query ContactsContract to get Emails, Phones and Addresses at the same time?

As far as I have found, there doesn't seem to be a way to join tables together. I know that I can query for a CommonDataKinds table for Phone, StructuredPostal (address) or Email, but I can't seem to find a way to query for all three of them at once.
I only get a Cursor that has either one of them but not an aggregate projection.
Anybody have some advice on how I can achieve something like this?
Here is what my get StructuredPostal query currently looks like:
public static Cursor getAddressCursor(ContentResolver contactHelper, String startsWith) {
logger.v("getAddressCursor");
Cursor cursor = null;
try {
if (startsWith != null && !startsWith.equals("")) {
cursor = contactHelper.query(
ContactsContract.CommonDataKinds.StructuredPostal.CONTENT_URI,
null,
ContactsContract.Contacts.DISPLAY_NAME + " LIKE '" + startsWith + "%'",
null,
ContactsContract.Contacts.DISPLAY_NAME + " ASC");
} else {
cursor = contactHelper.query(
ContactsContract.CommonDataKinds.StructuredPostal.CONTENT_URI,
null,
null,
null,
ContactsContract.Contacts.DISPLAY_NAME + " ASC");
}
} catch (Exception e) {
e.printStackTrace();
}
return cursor;
}
How would I go about aggregating Phone and Email into this?
You can use this method:
public void readContacts(){
ContentResolver cr = getContentResolver();
Cursor cur = cr.query(ContactsContract.Contacts.CONTENT_URI,
null, null, null, null);
if (cur.getCount() > 0) {
while (cur.moveToNext()) {
String id = cur.getString(cur.getColumnIndex(ContactsContract.Contacts._ID));
String name = cur.getString(cur.getColumnIndex(ContactsContract.Contacts.DISPLAY_NAME));
if (Integer.parseInt(cur.getString(cur.getColumnIndex(ContactsContract.Contacts.HAS_PHONE_NUMBER))) > 0) {
System.out.println("name : " + name + ", ID : " + id);
// get the <span class="IL_AD" id="IL_AD4">phone number</span>
Cursor pCur = cr.query(ContactsContract.CommonDataKinds.Phone.CONTENT_URI,null,
ContactsContract.CommonDataKinds.Phone.CONTACT_ID +" = ?",
new String[]{id}, null);
while (pCur.moveToNext()) {
String phone = pCur.getString(
pCur.getColumnIndex(ContactsContract.CommonDataKinds.Phone.NUMBER));
System.out.println("phone" + phone);
}
pCur.close();
// get email and type
Cursor emailCur = cr.query(
ContactsContract.CommonDataKinds.Email.CONTENT_URI,
null,
ContactsContract.CommonDataKinds.Email.CONTACT_ID + " = ?",
new String[]{id}, null);
while (emailCur.moveToNext()) {
// This would allow you get several email addresses
// if the email addresses were stored in an array
String email = emailCur.getString(
emailCur.getColumnIndex(ContactsContract.CommonDataKinds.Email.DATA));
String emailType = emailCur.getString(
emailCur.getColumnIndex(ContactsContract.CommonDataKinds.Email.TYPE));
System.out.println("Email " + email + " Email Type : " + emailType);
}
emailCur.close();
// Get note.......
String noteWhere = ContactsContract.Data.CONTACT_ID + " = ? AND " + ContactsContract.Data.MIMETYPE + " = ?";
String[] noteWhereParams = new String[]{id,
ContactsContract.CommonDataKinds.Note.CONTENT_ITEM_TYPE};
Cursor noteCur = cr.query(ContactsContract.Data.CONTENT_URI, null, noteWhere, noteWhereParams, null);
if (noteCur.moveToFirst()) {
String note = noteCur.getString(noteCur.getColumnIndex(ContactsContract.CommonDataKinds.Note.NOTE));
System.out.println("Note " + note);
}
noteCur.close();
//Get Postal Address....
String addrWhere = ContactsContract.Data.CONTACT_ID + " = ? AND " + ContactsContract.Data.MIMETYPE + " = ?";
String[] addrWhereParams = new String[]{id,

if (imCur.moveToFirst()) {
String imName = imCur.getString(
imCur.getColumnIndex(ContactsContract.CommonDataKinds.Im.DATA));
String imType;
imType = imCur.getString(
imCur.getColumnIndex(ContactsContract.CommonDataKinds.Im.TYPE));
}
imCur.close();
// Get Organizations.........

String[] orgWhereParams = new String[]{id,

Cursor orgCur = cr.query(ContactsContract.Data.CONTENT_URI,
null, orgWhere, orgWhereParams, null);
if (orgCur.moveToFirst()) {
String orgName = orgCur.getString(orgCur.getColumnIndex(ContactsContract.CommonDataKinds.Organization.DATA));
String title = orgCur.getString(orgCur.getColumnIndex(ContactsContract.CommonDataKinds.Organization.TITLE));
}
orgCur.close();
}
}
}
}
You will get phone number, email, notes, postal address etc.

Fire intent to contact app then return to own app

I have created an app that fires an intent to create a contact, this lets you choose whatever apps that has the necessary intent filters to create the contact. However, I want to have whichever app creates the contact to return to my app once complete. I have tried this with the built in contact manager but it returns to itself rather than my own app. Is it possible to do what I want?
What you are trying to do isn't possible - sorry. Instead, you could try capturing the contacts data in your app instead of launching a different app. Heres some code to get you started:
public class MainActivity extends Activity {
/** Called when the activity is first created. */
#Override
public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) {
super.onCreate(savedInstanceState);
setContentView(R.layout.main);
readContacts();
}
public void readContacts(){
ContentResolver cr = getContentResolver();
Cursor cur = cr.query(ContactsContract.Contacts.CONTENT_URI,null, null, null, null);
if (cur.getCount() > 0) {
while (cur.moveToNext()) {
String id = cur.getString(cur.getColumnIndex(ContactsContract.Contacts._ID));
String name = cur.getString(cur.getColumnIndex(ContactsContract.Contacts.DISPLAY_NAME));
if (Integer.parseInt(cur.getString(cur.getColumnIndex(ContactsContract.Contacts.HAS_PHONE_NUMBER))) > 0) {

Getting android contacts

Im trying to get a list of all the contacts and there email address.
Currently im using this code, however I get a lot of duplicate names and emails. What i want is just one person and one email. Is there a way I can merge contacts while querying for them?
Also im just looking for a > 2.0 solution.
private void init() {
ContentResolver cr = getContentResolver();
Cursor cur = cr.query(ContactsContract.Contacts.CONTENT_URI,null, null, null, null);
if (cur.getCount() > 0) {
while (cur.moveToNext()) {
String id = cur.getString(cur.getColumnIndex(ContactsContract.Contacts._ID));
String name = cur.getString(cur.getColumnIndex(ContactsContract.Contacts.DISPLAY_NAME));
Cursor emailCur = cr.query(ContactsContract.CommonDataKinds.Email.CONTENT_URI,null,ContactsContract.CommonDataKinds.Email.CONTACT_ID + " = ?", new String[]{id},null);
while (emailCur.moveToNext()) {
String email = emailCur.getString( emailCur.getColumnIndex(ContactsContract.CommonDataKinds.Email.DATA));
Log.e("Email",name+" "+email);
}
emailCur.close();
}
}
Try out the working code below.

How to get phone contacts in Android [duplicate]

This question already has an answer here:
How to get all android contacts but without those which are on SIM
(1 answer)
Closed 7 years ago.
I want to get contacts saved in phone only not sim contacts using new api contactContracts
i am doing this by filtering Account type (not com.anddroid.contacts.sim),this work for one handset(HTC Desire) but there is no common account type found which can work for all handsets
can anybody tell me how to do that
Give the permission in the manifest file
"android.permission.READ_CONTACTS"
just copy the code and contacts will be shown in Logcat
public class GetContactsDemo extends Activity {
/** Called when the activity is first created. */

super.onCreate(savedInstanceState);

You may want to look at ContentProviders for the ContactsProvider.
The ContentProvider tutorial even uses Contacts as an example:
the URI for the table that matches phone numbers to people and the URI for the table that holds pictures of people (both controlled by the Contacts content provider) are:
android.provider.Contacts.Phones.CONTENT_URI
android.provider.Contacts.Photos.CONTENT_URI
Dmitri Plotnikov has some very useful things to say in this Google Group thread.
You must add uses_permission android:name="android.permission.READ_CONTACTS then read the contacts as below:
Cursor cursor = getContentResolver().query(ContactsContract.Contacts.CONTENT_URI, null, null, null, null);
while (cursor.moveToNext()) {
String name = cursor.getString(cursor.getColumnIndex(ContactsContract.Contacts.DISPLAY_NAME));
}
You can try the following code, I got the the required details:
Cursor cursor = getContentResolver().query(ContactsContract.Contacts.CONTENT_URI,null,null, null,null);
while (cursor.moveToNext()) {
listName.add(cursor.getString(cursor.getColumnIndex(ContactsContract.Contacts.DISPLAY_NAME)));
listContactId.add(cursor.getString(cursor.getColumnIndex(ContactsContract.Contacts._ID)));
if (Integer.parseInt(cursor.getString(cursor.getColumnIndex(ContactsContract.Contacts.HAS_PHONE_NUMBER))) > 0) {
Cursor pCur = getContentResolver().query(
ContactsContract.CommonDataKinds.Phone.CONTENT_URI, null,ContactsContract.CommonDataKinds.Phone.CONTACT_ID +" = "+cursor.getString(cursor.getColumnIndex(ContactsContract.Contacts._ID)),null, null);
while (pCur.moveToNext()) {
listMobileNo.add(pCur.getString(pCur.getColumnIndex("DATA1")));
}
pCur.close();
} else
listMobileNo.add("");
}
