action bar takes up entire screen - android

I am using Action Bar Sherlock for compatibility with earlier versions of Android. My objective is to not display the app title in the action bar, but to show a logo on the left and a couple of action buttons on the right. In my styles, I am using these options for the action bar:

Everything works as hoped for on Android 2.3. On my Android 4.0.4 test phone, however, the action bar takes up the entire screen, with the app logo on the left, the action buttons on the right, but these are all centered vertically on the screen instead of residing at the top. The gradient for the toolbar, which is actually a very small pic dimensionally, occupies the entire screen (besides the status bar). The rest of the activity below the action bar is not visible.
If I remove showHome from the displayOptions above, the action bar no longer takes up the whole screen. But my logo is now gone. What do I need to do to get this working properly for Android 4?
Thanks in advance for any help.

I determined that this issue is not a problem with ActionBarSherlock, just with Android 4 in general. There seems to be a combination of options that causes this behavior to happen. I couldn't find a satisfactory solution with styles but was able to get the desired behavior in code.

Get rid of Action bar and Transparent top bar?

I'm new to Android studio and I figured out how I can send my application to my phone. The problem is, In the preview, At the bottom, it has this auction bar (See photo) Is there a way to get rid of that? Because my phone (Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge) Does not have that, And it sits in the way if I want to place something at the very bottom. Because in android studio it may be at the very bottom, But on my phone, it isn't.
Also, Is there a way to make that top bar, That is now black, Sort of transparent? So it takes the colour of the background? You see it in a lot of apps. As I mentioned, I'm very new in android studio so sorry.
Thanks in advance
The control bar at the bottom is part of the emulator aka any phone without hard buttons. You can toggle to full screen and it will hide it for you.
For example code simply create new activity and select fullscreen activity. You will see that it manages it by touch of surface to reappear and timer to dissappear. Just remove that bloat and handle it yourself. Done !
As for the status bar at the top, it uses your activity default background. So if you want to change this go to your styles and add a background to your AppTheme and this will be the default background color of unspecified areas instead of black.
Example:

The windowBackground color will drive the background color of unspecified areas unless you override the theme on any particular activity in the manifest. Goodluck.

Style Android ActionMode bar

I'm trying to style the ActionMode bar. I want the bar to remain the same except for some margin on the right (end).

I'm not interested in the padding, but I used it as a test and the padding adjustment works. Margin, however, has no effect. I imagine this might be related to some unusual way it enters the existing layout. Is there some way to style the layout of the ActionMode bar?
I could not find a way to do this natively, but in my searching I found a great (and tiny) library that can be used as a replacement for the CAB that behaves more like a toolbar. It was easily customizable and almost plugs right into the existing CAB model.

How to customize preferences screen title in Lollipop?

I make an Android application trying to support Android Lollipop and previous versions. So, I use Theme.AppCompat.Light for my app.
In Android 4.4, Action Bar title is white like I want and preferences screen titles are blacks.
In Android 5.0, Action Bar title is black by default and preferences screen titles are blacks. But, I want my Action Bar title be white on all versions of Android so I used the following customization in my theme for v21 :

#android:color/white

With this customization, Action Bar title is white like i want but it seems that preferences screen title are also linked to android:textColorPrimary in Android 5.0 .
So, my question is the following. Is there a solution to create an Action Bar title with white title and in the same time have preferences screen title with other color like black?
Just make two styles.
One with:

#android:color/white

One with:

#android:color/black

Set your activities with action bars to the white one.
Set you preference activity to the black one.

Action bar action button icon size

Our app uses Action Bar Sherlock, and it has a theme like such:

Where Theme.MyApp.Default is the default theme for the app.
I need to set the icons for the action buttons (#2 on this image) to be a specific size. When I set the height/width/scaleX/scaleY/scaleType/padding properties however, the icon on the button still maintain what looks like their pixel size. The text part of the action button does seems to adhere to the setting though. Could it just be a compound drawable on a textview?
How can I set the size of the icon on the action bar?
Action bar icons for phones should be 32x32 dp.
Action bar icons are graphic buttons that represent the most important actions people can take within your app. Each one should employ a simple metaphor representing a single concept that most people can grasp at a glance.
you refer that link here
Have you cleaned your project and then run?
and you can specify action item height in main.xml(actionbar menu layout ) also though contrl space wont wrk its like normal height prperty.
whenever changing styles you have to clean and run the project
More and more evidence points to the fact that the menu on the action bar is a compound drawable. (Setting the property android:drawablePadding moves the icon from the text.) And seeing that you can't scale the image in XML for a compound drawable, this doesn't seem possible at the moment.

make android HomeAsUp icon disappear on demand

In my android app, in the Action Bar, next to the < image is an icon. I want to make it invisible/gone ondemand dynamically. How do I do that? The icon is actually defined as follows (this should help you realize where in the action bar I am talking about).

showHome|homeAsUp

#drawable/my_icon

I tried the following, but nothing.
this.getActionBar().setDisplayHomeAsUpEnabled(false);
this.getActionBar().setLogo(null);
this.getActionBar().setDisplayUseLogoEnabled(true);
In Java, call setDisplayShowHomeEnabled(false) and setDisplayShowTitleEnabled(false) on your ActionBar.
