In case you were wondering, no I didn't miss the hundreds of threads similar to my question. However, none worked for me. I want to use findviewbyid in the FragmentActivity. I am basically using the sample android implementation and a solution proposed online to find the fragment.

Finally the question: How do I get the view/fragment from the FragmentActivity(MainActivity)?
From the fragmentActivity you can call...
public Object instantiateItem (ViewGroup container, int position)
It is a method of your adapter. And you will get back the fragment in this position. Once you have the fragment then you can call any public method in it. The container would be the actual viewPager

I'm a student in 2 year electrical and computer science : i am not familiar with android studio (most of the time i work on C++).
I made a joystick on processing for an android project, and then I exported my processing sketch to android studio, now I have to find a way to recover data (vector position) from my processing sketch to my main activity.
BUT here is the problem:
I want to add a TextView to my main activity but the processing sketch takes all the window, and I can't reduce it.
so what did i try :
I tried to place the fragment in a relative layout, and then place the TextView but it didn't work, even if i make the fragment very little it still taking the whole screen.
My thought are that there is a problem with this line ->

In this way you could have an activity with as many views as you want, and as many fragments as you wish. Note that if you have more than one fragment your activity will be more like a tabbed activity.

I create app with TabActivity and also trying to replace one fragment from fragment itself, I read in https://developer.android.com/training/basics/fragments/fragment-ui.html how to do it and i created interface in my fragment that i want to be replace with another,
I implement the interface in my MainActivity and still when running my app it show me container itself.

What i mean, is making MainActivity as a main container for all fragments, either with tabs or just a regular fragment,
1- Main Activity XML: remove ViewPager, add a FrameLayout instead (use same id)
2- Create new fragment TabsFragment with this XML:

now if you want default view for app to be the tabs, then in MainActivity at onCreate() show TabsFragment by calling your method:
onReplaceFragment(TabsFragment.class);
now every thing should work fine, because the idea here is to replace the fragment displayed in main activity with another one
in this case TabsFragment, Result, and New2
not to replace viewpager fragments (because as i told you this is managed via the adapter) not by calling replace()
you may need to play around this, it's not a final code, just something to give you idea about it.

I'm getting this error which I have dealt with before. I have tried a bunch of different ids and so on but it's not helping. As you can see below the names do appear to be correct. You are giving wrong layout inside ListFragment's onCreateView method.
My app has a list and detail view, where I allow the user to swipe between the different detail views, using a ViewPager in portrait. In landscape, I show both fragments on the screen.
I'm having an issue where, when the device is rotated, the icons are duplicating themselves over and over in the Actionbar. I've learned that I'm probably creating new fragments whenever the device is rotated and I should be checking if the fragment is in the FragmentManager and then create a new instance if it isn't.
I am able to do that easily using the landscape layout, however, I'm not sure how to check if the fragment exists in portrait mode, using the ViewPager. Do I do that in getItem() of the FragmentStatePagerAdapter?

Well, this question's solution seemed to work for me. Just setting:
super.onCreate(null);
in onCreate of the Activity solved my fragment issue.
I want to show a Button and a PieChart below in a tab.

But im not sure what to inflate at the fragments onCreateView or if I need a FrameLayout in my xml?
