I'm a total beginner in Android layout, but I want to center the content vertically and horizontally.
So this book I'm reading says this:

means that you can manage the entire layout by the parent it self, you are unnecessarily adding another LinearLayout which can degrade the layout performance
You can use android:gravity="center" instead of android:layout_gravity="center" which a child supplies to its parent.

This is a warning triggered when any Layout has only one child which is also a Layout. In your case LinearLayout. In these cases one of other can be removed without any problems. It is recommended to remove these redundant layouts. It is.. as it says just a warning, it wont cause any exception, but if you remove that redundant layout that will help improve overall performance
You should share your full code so that everyone get the whole scenario of your problem. Any way you can follow three way to do the things.
Approach One :
android:layout_centerInParent="true"
Above code will make your layout center horizontally and vertically.
Approach two :
And if you want to do individually.(May be needs sometimes)
android:layout_centerHorizontal="true"
android:layout_centerVertical="true"
Approach three :
android:gravity="center" (Though I see you have used. May be you have missed any point inside code).

Firstly, I am new to android so if I have missed something basic I apologise.
I have a page which has two ListViews side by side, both with varying amounts of content. I also have a TextView above the ListViews and another TextView below the listviews. These text view boxes change based on items selected in either of the two ListViews.
These two ListViews sit side by side, taking up half of the screen each, while a Textview sits directly above and directly below, both centred to the page. An image is shown below.
This is the page looking normal on load.
The problem is when I select an item from either list. I have a feeling I am missing some XML properties, but I am not sure which properties or if this is even the case. When an item is selected, let's say from the ListView on the right, the TextView at the bottom is updated with text taken from an array. The ListView also decides to change the width and I am not sure why this is.... I don't want the ListView to change width. I want it to remain taking up half of the page and half of the page only.
This is the page after an item from the right ListView has been selected.
I would also like to keep things in RelativeLayout. I also believe it is only an XML issue and not to do with the adapter or any other code so I will not include that for now. I can include it if required.
Any help would be great. Thanks in advance.

The problems with layout could be caused by ScrollView to be the wrapper
I stumbled upon some note in http://developer.android.com/reference/android/widget/ExpandableListView.html
"...Note: You cannot use the value wrap_content for the android:layout_height attribute of a ExpandableListView in XML if the parent's size is also not strictly specified (for example, if the parent were ScrollView you could not specify wrap_content since it also can be any length. However, you can use wrap_content if the ExpandableListView parent has a specific size, such as 100 pixels."
I removed wrapping ScrollView and linear layout started working properly. Now its only to understand how to wrap the stuff to ScrollView. God help me
But anyway this is really weird behavior. I think that fill_parent is not really correct wording. When using heirarchyviewer tool I always see WRAP_CONTENT and MATCH_PARENT values for layout_width and leayout_height. So probably fill_parent is actually means match_parent which puts me in cognitive dissonance.
You have your layout_width properties set to wrap_content. This means that they could change as the data changes. I would recommend putting your ListViews in a LinearLayout with orientation:horizontal and set the amount of space that each element takes up with layout_weight. Background
I have a RelativeLayout inside a FrameLayout/RelativeLayout (doesn't matter to me), which should be at the bottom of the screen (like a toolbar), and should hold a few views in it.
Its height is set to "wrap_content" and so does its child-views.
The child-views of this layout are : A textView that is on the left, and a Horizontal LinearLayout on the right with a few buttons.
The problem
It seems that no matter what I do, the textview is causing the RelativeLayout to take the whole space, instead of just its children.

Here's the minimal XML content that causes this problem. I've removed the extra stuff (LinearLayout and its children, and also some attributes that don't matter) since they don't cause this problem in case I remove the TextView:

I've tried many possible attributes, and also tried adding additional layouts to try to "fool" the RelativeLayout, but none of those have succeeded.
The question
Why does it occur?
A working solution would be to use a Horizontal LinearLayout (with a weight for the TextView ) instead RelativeLayout , but I still want to know why can't I use a RelativeLayout, and why it occurs. Also how to fix it while still using RelativeLayout.

A Layout where the positions of the children can be described in relation to each other or to the parent.
Note that you cannot have a circular dependency between the size of the RelativeLayout and the position of its children. For example, you cannot have a RelativeLayout whose height is set to WRAP_CONTENT and a child set to ALIGN_PARENT_BOTTOM

Which is exactly your case. RelativeLayout can not do that.
I have encountered the same issue before, this might be caused by android:layout_alignParentBottom attribute.Maybe you can find another way to achieve your desired effect. See this for more information.

and it also worked when i tried some like this

I want to place 2 ImageViews, one above the other.

How can I do that? I know only in runtime what images to use, so I cannot specify them in an xml file.

You can use FrameLayout to stack views on each other.

then you may set android:layout_margin="" to properly position the ImageViews.
Note that the last child of FrameLayout is the top most visible view

Since absolute layout is deprecated you probably have to play with margins.
After much research on both SO and google, I haven't seen any one with exactly the same problem I am experiencing, so here it is:
I recently redid the entire UI on an android app. For the most part, I made only cosmetic changes to each of the screens. They appear in the UI editor of eclipse perfectly as expected. However, directly after doing this, two of the screens stopped being laid out correctly on both all tested devices and the emulator.
Now, the big problem one these two screens was that the root level LinearLayout didn't appear to be actually honoring the fill_parent for either layout_height or layout_width. it looks like it's being measured as if it were set to wrap_content instead. It only takes up about 70% of the screen - which is just enough to wrap the individual elements inside the root LinearLayout. I would post an image, but as a new user, I am not allowed to.
The layout isn't stretching to fill the screen. Here's the code for layout, except that there are a few more in the LinearLayouts containing a TextView and an EditText.

I think the root LinearLayout should be filling both height and width. I've used this same layout many MANY times in our app without problems. (A quick count revealed that I used 76 LinearLayouts in our app, and all but two of them are working.)
At first, I suspected that perhaps our custom classes measure was wrecking things, so I changed the layout to use all plain EditTexts, but there was no change. I double checked the activity, but it isn't doing anything except to load this xml. So, in desperation, I redid the layout like so:

Long story short, I am asking how to fix this so that the LinearLayout fills the screen as expected.
I am at a complete loss as to why this is happening, and I am certainly hoping that someone on SO has an idea. This has got me pulling my hair out!
Try setting fixed width and height for the root layout.
Then only you will be able to debug who is driving length and width. It is very much possible that parent activity or background activity is setting dimensions. Once you identify the root cause you can go back to original settings.

If you use a custom activity as a container to other activities for some reason (In our case, we were recreating the look of our iOS app, and needed a custom menu to show up along the button side of the screen) the window manager seems to get a bit confused with what the actual height and width of the nested activities should be. A call to fillparent or matchparent ends up wrapping the content instead.
We ended up changing the behavior of several methods in our container activity class to make this work.
I recently asked a question about how to add a view on top of a view, after asking that I realized I needed to added a better layout to my app before proceeding further.
I was reading Android Layout Tricks but noticed it was specifically for text views and image views. I'm looking to do it with two custom views. So I decided to whip up a quick image in paint to hopefully show more clearly of what I'm wanting to do.
This is how I want my layout to split the views. :
This is how it would look with the views drawn. Obviously the purple and blue boundaries would be the background color (greyish). The data above simply displays the y-intercept of the graph drawn with respective color. (So there would be multiple graph views drawn on top of each other)
So my question is, what would my main content view look like? I assume it would have a Linear layout but I'm rather new to these layouts.

So The only question that really remains is, am I supposed to use TextViews? Meaning in my Activity am I able to add my custom views where these TextViews are? Or am I supposed to add my custom view to the XML?

Not to be rude, but it would be much better for you to peruse these and learn the xml on your own. That way you can actually understand it and be better able to re-create it later.

Well, for your "Custom Data View", you would use a LinearLayout with android:layout_width="fill_parent" and android:layout_height="fill_parent" and android:layout_weight="1" and android:background="#BA4AAB" (See http://www.colorpicker.com/)
Then for your Custom Graph View, I would use:
android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:layout_height="fill_parent" android:layout_weight="4" android:background="#7D4ABA"
Note the layout_weight and background values I put are kind of guesses, you might have to tweak them some to match what you want.
The two linearlayouts that I mentioned would be inside one larger LinearLayout with android:orientation="vertical"
Then for the data in the top, you would use 4 text Views, and in code, you'd use setText(...) on those text views to put your data in.
In the xml for textview1, you would add android:id="#+id/textview1" then in code add TextView textview1 = (TextView)findviewbyId(R.id.textview1); then textview1.setText(myString);
For the graph in the bottom part, you would use 2 views for the base of the graph, and set there android:layout_width and android:layout_height to whatever suits you using dip, dp, or px units.
For the lines that you draw, I believe you would have to use the canvas class with a bitmap and call canvas.drawLine(...) (see http://developer.android.com/reference/android/graphics/Canvas.html)
