I have a Button set up like this:
<Button
android:id="#+id/sendBtn"
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_alignParentRight="true"
android:layout_alignParentTop="true"
android:text="Send"
android:padding="-5dp"
android:paddingBottom="-10dp"
android:background="#color/red"/>
Here is how it looks like in Android 4.0 and above: http://i.imgur.com/2P9WEWp.png?1
Here is how it looks like in Android 2.3: http://i.imgur.com/4oXSN2P.png?1
As you can see, the 2.3 button seems squished together and very small. How can I fix this so new versions and 2.3 atleast have same resemblance?
It's about the device size, create multiple values folder(values, values-sw600dp, values-v11 etc) make each of them has dimens.xml. In dimens.xml define different padding values. Then in your layout file use this values instead of hardcoded ones.
e.g
<Button
android:id="#+id/sendBtn"
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_alignParentRight="true"
android:layout_alignParentTop="true"
android:text="Send"
android:padding="#dimens/padding"
android:paddingBottom="#dimens/paddingBottom"
android:background="#color/red"/>
Use positive values for padding, set textColor attribute for white color:
<Button
android:id="#+id/sendBtn"
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_alignParentRight="true"
android:layout_alignParentTop="true"
android:text="Send"
android:padding="5dp"
android:paddingBottom="10dp"
android:background="#color/red"
android:textColor="#FFFFFF"/>
Moreover, use android-holo-colors to generate a proper styles, selectors, drawables for Button for all APIs.
There is a two ways to solve this problem..
1: need to put padding all side.
<Button
android:id="#+id/sendBtn"
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:gravity="center"
android:layout_alignParentRight="true"
android:layout_alignParentTop="true"
android:text="Send"
android:padding="5dp"
android:background="#color/red"
android:textColor="#android:color/white"/>
2: need to give fixed size for this button.
<Button
android:id="#+id/sendBtn"
android:layout_width="60dp"
android:layout_height="40dp"
android:gravity="center"
android:layout_alignParentRight="true"
android:layout_alignParentTop="true"
android:text="Send"
android:background="#color/red"
android:textColor="#android:color/white"/>
Both are easy and perfect lookup.

I try to align four checkboxes but one is not in the center of the other. If I shorten the text it fits but if its longer it looks like in the screenshot. The problem is it will be in different languages so the text size can be different. Also if I remove the scale it fits perfect but I need this bigger checkboxes
This is my code:
<CheckBox
android:id="#+id/cb1"
android:scaleX="1.3"
android:scaleY="1.3"
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_marginTop="23dp"
android:text="#string/unmounted"
android:textColor="#color/textBlack"
android:layout_below="#+id/abc"
android:layout_toEndOf="#+id/imageView6"
android:focusable="false"/>
<CheckBox
android:id="#+id/cb2"
android:scaleX="1.3"
android:scaleY="1.3"
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:text="#string/problem_not_working"
android:textColor="#color/textBlack"
android:layout_below="#+id/cb1"
android:layout_alignStart="#+id/cb1"
android:focusable="false"/>
<CheckBox
android:id="#+id/cb3"
android:scaleX="1.3"
android:scaleY="1.3"
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:text="#string/problem_cable_defective"
android:textColor="#color/textBlack"
android:layout_below="#+id/cb2"
android:layout_alignStart="#+id/cb2"
android:focusable="false"/>
<CheckBox
android:id="#+id/cb4"
android:scaleX="1.3"
android:scaleY="1.3"
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:text="#string/problem_cable_tie"
android:textColor="#color/textBlack"
android:layout_below="#+id/cb3"
android:layout_alignStart="#+id/cb3"
android:focusable="false"/>
Here is the exact solution for your problem, the thing which you are actually trying to achieve is the bigger checkbox view (corresponding to its text which is as big as the checkbox view, obviously) with proper alignment of all the views in the series, something like this:
Your desired UI.
But the thing you are doing wrong is that you are using the scaleX and scaleY attributes for achieving your desired UI that distorts your view as these two attributes scale the complete view i.e. the squared checkbox view with its text/label in the X and Y directions respectively (together with the text/label of the checkbox), so there is a dependency on the text as well (which is distorting your view).
So, the below code will solve your problem:
(In this I have taken the squared checkbox view as separate and beside it I have placed a textview in which I have written the text which corresponds to the text/label of that checkbox to complete the UI). Thereby using two views (i.e. the CheckBox and the TextView beside it) instead of using a single compound view (i.e. the CheckBox).
Note: In the solution given below, the CheckBox is a compound view but I haven't used it in the
same manner.
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>

</RelativeLayout>
And the other way out to your mentioned problem would be to create custom drawables for the checkbox and then handle them using a state list drawable as for the checkbox to be shown differently in different states as when it is unchecked, checked etc.
This link would help you if you are interested in doing it in this manner or way and would be great if you want to customize your checkbox's view.

Because if I drag one TextView it affecting all other TextView.
As #GabeSechan said, you need to learn what android:layout_xxx properties in RelativeLayout means.
When you moving a View in RelativeLayout via Layout Editor, you need to consider some of the following properties in your layout:
android:layout_above="#+id/textView25"
android:layout_below="#+id/textView24"
android:layout_toRightOf="#+id/textView25"
android:layout_toEndOf="#+id/textView25"
android:layout_alignParentLeft="true"
android:layout_alignParentStart="true"
android:layout_above="#+id/textView25" means that you want the View above textView25 view.
android:layout_below="#+id/textView24" means that you want the View below textView25 View.
The following properties means that you want the view to the right side of TextView25 View:
android:layout_toRightOf="#+id/textView25"
android:layout_toEndOf="#+id/textView25"
The following properties means that you want the view to align with the left side of the parent layout:
android:layout_alignParentLeft="true"
android:layout_alignParentStart="true"
If you want to edit views position in a RelativeLayout, please don't depends with drag and drop via Layout Editor. You better do it manually except you want to have a headache later. Use Layout Editor to view the design result.
Design with a paper or imagination first, then code it after that.
Try to learn it from:
Relative Layout
Constructing View Layouts
The best practice for doing that would be to open a splitview between your code and design views and then editing the code to place the text in the correct location, using attributes such as padding, margin, aligning, below, above, etc. refer to this guide for positioning stuff in relative layout and combine it with other formatting attributes such as margin and padding.
For my project I'm using background images,so I can put invisible buttons..
but the problem is when I open the activity in the emulator,it just turns out to be a salad( Text views mixed with buttons etc..)
<EditText
android:layout_width="200dp"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:id="#+id/firstname"
android:inputType="text"
android:layout_marginTop="57dp"
android:layout_alignParentTop="true"
android:layout_alignLeft="#+id/lastname"
android:layout_alignStart="#+id/lastname" />
<EditText
android:layout_width="200dp"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:id="#+id/lastname"
android:inputType="text"
android:layout_below="#+id/firstname"
android:layout_alignRight="#+id/spinner"
android:layout_alignEnd="#+id/spinner" />
<EditText
android:layout_width="230dp"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:id="#+id/email"
android:inputType="text"
android:layout_below="#+id/lastname"
android:layout_alignRight="#+id/lastname"
android:layout_alignEnd="#+id/lastname" />
<EditText
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:inputType="textPassword"
android:ems="10"
android:id="#+id/password"
android:layout_marginTop="35dp"
android:layout_below="#+id/email"
android:layout_alignParentLeft="true"
android:layout_alignParentStart="true" />
<EditText
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:inputType="textPassword"
android:ems="10"
android:id="#+id/confirmPasswordEditText"
android:layout_marginTop="35dp"
android:layout_below="#+id/password"
android:layout_alignParentLeft="true"
android:layout_alignParentStart="true" />
<EditText
android:layout_width="50dp"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:inputType="text"
android:ems="10"
android:id="#+id/age"
android:layout_alignBottom="#+id/spinner"
android:layout_toLeftOf="#+id/imageViewUser"
android:layout_toStartOf="#+id/imageViewUser" />
<Spinner
android:layout_width="100dp"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:id="#+id/spinner"
android:entries="#array/choose"
android:prompt="#string/genders"
android:layout_below="#+id/confirmPasswordEditText"
android:layout_toRightOf="#+id/confirmPasswordEditText"
android:layout_toEndOf="#+id/confirmPasswordEditText" />
<Button
style="?android:attr/buttonStyleSmall"
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:text="#string/joinus"
android:id="#+id/signUpButton"
android:layout_alignParentBottom="true"
android:layout_alignRight="#+id/spinner"
android:layout_alignEnd="#+id/spinner" />
<ImageView
android:layout_width="100dp"
android:layout_height="100dp"
android:id="#+id/imageViewUser"
android:layout_below="#+id/age"
android:layout_alignLeft="#+id/email"
android:layout_alignStart="#+id/email" />
Ok from what I can see, you're using the layout id incorrectly.
For example, you've got :
<EditText
android:layout_width="50dp"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:inputType="text"
android:ems="10"
android:id="#+id/age"
android:layout_alignBottom="#+id/spinner"
android:layout_toLeftOf="#+id/imageViewUser"
android:layout_toStartOf="#+id/imageViewUser" />
The line that says
android:layout_alignbottom="#+id/spinner"
should be replaced with
android:layout_alignbottom="#id/spinner"
WITHOUT the '+' symbol.
That way, you're referencing another layout versus defining an id value.
EDIT
Here is an example of what the view should look like to avoid xml errors:
<!-- This is the top-left-most layout in the view -->
<EditText
android:layout_width="50dp"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:id="#+id/age" />
<!-- This layout will be shown BELOW the 'age' layout -->
<EditText
android:layout_width="50dp"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:id="#+id/name"
android:layout_below="#id/age" />
<!-- This layout will be shown TO THE RIGHT OF the 'age' layout -->
<EditText
android:layout_width="50dp"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:id="#+id/birthday"
android:layout_toRightOf="#id/age" />
Now, if you try to reference #id/birthday in the #id/age EditText view, you'll get an error, because the layout doesn't know about #id/birthday yet. It is defined BELOW #id/age.
Does this make sense?
#Yasmin12, Hi there, I can understand what has happened here, in your layout "dp" is causing problem. Use "dip" instead they will help you in debugging your layout as they will try to keep a coherent size to multiple screen resolutions,
<ImageView
android:id="#+id/avtar_animation_11"
android:layout_width="45dip"
android:layout_height="45dip"
android:src="#drawable/avtar011"/>
while supporting multiple screen when you give "dp" to dimensions, Actually android expects you to provide different values for different screen resolution. Lets say below is your imagview dimensions make few folders in res folder in your android project like these below
values-hdpi,
values-mdpi,
values-ldpi,
values-xhdpi,
values-xxhdpi
and in them make a dimens.xml file each of them and write
<dimen name="image_view_width">28dp</dimen>
<dimen name="image_view_height">28dp</dimen>
now that i have mentioned "dp" here instead of dip android wants me to keep track for different dimensions for different screen resolution, So i will change the image_view_width and image_view_height values are in separate values folders where dimens.xml is located. Make sure your dp values change as per your screen resolution you want your view to fit in.
<ImageView
android:id="#+id/avtar_animation_11"
android:layout_width="#dimen/image_view_width"
android:layout_height="#dimen/image_view_height"
android:src="#drawable/avtar011"/>
hard part is over now android will pick one of dimens.xml values depending on which screen your app is running, Voila now your layout rocks
I wanted to make an ImageButton to put in my app, but I need a very specific one.
I wanted to make an ImageButton similar to that of the one in QuickPic. Notice on the left screenshot, the Camera. See how there's an image, with a translucent gray bar at the bottom with text in it? I wanted to make something very similar to that, but with one large textview in the gray bar instead of two small ones. I am completely lost on how to do this in XML so if someone could help me, It'd be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
You mean something like this? :
<RelativeLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content" >
<ImageButton
android:id="#+id/imageButton1"
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_alignParentLeft="true"
android:layout_alignParentTop="true"
android:src="#drawable/ic_launcher" />
<TextView
android:layout_width="0dp"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_alignBottom="#+id/imageButton1"
android:layout_alignLeft="#+id/imageButton1"
android:layout_alignRight="#+id/imageButton1"
android:background="#33000000"
android:text="Image Text" />
</RelativeLayout>
Additionally, you can specify the TextView's gravity and textSize to further match your needs:
<TextView
android:layout_width="0dp"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_alignBottom="#+id/imageButton1"
android:layout_alignLeft="#+id/imageButton1"
android:layout_alignRight="#+id/imageButton1"
android:background="#33000000"
android:gravity="center_horizontal"
android:text="Image Text"
android:textSize="8sp" />
I designed one layout which have total 4 RelativeLayout one is outer cover and 3 are child of it. When I put White color in the outer layout than no spaces are left but when I put 9patch image as drawable image than little default padding/margin are left. Is there any properly which solve the padding/margin issue? I have tried margin negative but it will hide bit layout I think it is not proper solution, here is my layout
when I put white color as background than my layout look like
Here is the following code of my layout
<RelativeLayout
android:id="#+id/DetailSection1"
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_below="#+id/HeaderLayout"

From the 9-patch drawable image you posted:
The bottom line which indicates the horizontal data population on the view wasn't drawn from the starting point of left.
I am not sure about it. And I know I wasn't clear in explaining the above line.
Just check this:
Consider the below 9-patch is used as a background for a TextView. If you put some text in it, it will start from the area where the bottom line is drawn. Which mean it will start from the left and go all the way to right.
If you use the following 9-patch as a background and try the same thing which you did above. Will result in Text not written from the left. It leaves a bit padding.
That is the reason why you get such result. Of course I am 100% sure about it.
So, just to find out if this works. Try changing the bottom line to fill complete image.
I think you better apply the background color for which layout you want exactly. And one more keep the code so that we can understand easily what is your issue.
