I have a single activity in my app that uses a SearchView to search (see manifest-- the search intent is intercepted).
However, when I press search, nothing happens. The activity never re-starts itself. So, I removed android:launchMode="singleTop" from my activity and then it started re-starting itself and "working." However, it is preferable to have singleTop for me so that the activity only has one instance. Why is this not working when I have singleTop?
<activity
android:name="com.brianco.andypedia.MainActivity"
android:label="#string/app_name"
android:launchMode="singleTop" >
<intent-filter>
<action android:name="android.intent.action.MAIN" />
<category android:name="android.intent.category.LAUNCHER" />
</intent-filter>
<intent-filter>
<action android:name="android.intent.action.SEARCH" />
</intent-filter>
<meta-data android:name="android.app.searchable" android:resource="#xml/searchable" />
</activity>
<meta-data android:name="android.app.default_searchable"
android:value=".MainActivity" />
I don't know if this answers your question, but this page shows a simple searchview example with ActionBar Compat (it is the new google library compatible for the old Android versions)
You need to process your search intent on onNewIntent besides onCreate.

I am writing an Android App that has one main activity and one subactivity. When I install the app on my phone to test it out, I get two icons instead of one. The first icon is for the main activity and the second is for the subactivity. I don't want/need an icon for the subactivity.
Does anyone know how to turn this off in my app code, so that only the icon for the main activity is installed? Any information you can provide is greatly appreciated!
Thanks,
MobiKnow
Does your application manifest list an intent filter under your sub-activity that matches the main launcher?
<intent-filter>
<action android:name="android.intent.action.MAIN" />
<category android:name="android.intent.category.LAUNCHER" />
</intent-filter>
Make sure that your sub-activity is not filtering for these intents.
Edit: Just to be very clear, make sure the above lines are not listed under your sub-activity. That intent filter lets the Android system know that you intend for it to be listed as an entry point to your application.
We have the same problem but i fixed it this way
before my code below in manifest
<application
android:debuggable="true"
android:allowBackup="true">
<activity android:name=".SplashActivity">
<intent-filter>
<action android:name="android.intent.action.MAIN" />
<category android:name="android.intent.category.LAUNCHER" />
</intent-filter>
</activity>
<activity
android:name="com.noupdate.apptest_noupdate.MainActivity"
android:icon="#drawable/ic_launcher"
android:label="#string/app_name">
<intent-filter>
<action android:name="android.intent.action.MAIN" />
<category android:name="android.intent.category.LAUNCHER" />
</intent-filter>
</activity>
</application>
Notice that in the SplashActivity inside the intent is this code
<intent-filter>
<action android:name="android.intent.action.MAIN" />
<category android:name="android.intent.category.LAUNCHER" />
</intent-filter>
i only deleted the category
<category android:name="android.intent.category.LAUNCHER" />
So after i deleted the intent-filter category in splash it didn't install two app icon but only one for main the code will be like this notice that the intent-filter category is deleted
<application
android:debuggable="true"
android:allowBackup="true">
<activity android:name=".SplashActivity">
<intent-filter>
<action android:name="android.intent.action.MAIN" />
</intent-filter>
</activity>
<activity
android:name="com.noupdate.apptest_noupdate.MainActivity"
android:icon="#drawable/ic_launcher"
android:theme="#android:style/Theme.NoTitleBar"
android:label="#string/app_name">
<intent-filter>
<action android:name="android.intent.action.MAIN" />
<category android:name="android.intent.category.LAUNCHER" />
</intent-filter>
</activity>
</application>
it really helps
It creates two App icon because you must have added the given filter to two of your activities. See manifest.
<category android:name="android.intent.category.MAIN" />
Remove the above statement from the other one. Then you are good to go.
Like in the other answers,
<intent-filter>
<action android:name="android.intent.action.MAIN" />
<category android:name="android.intent.category.LAUNCHER"/>
Was the culprit. However, in my manifest I only had one activity with that intent filter. As it turns out, I am using a library I built and it has an activity declared in it's manifest which uses that intent filter. So, in short, be sure your app's manifest and dependencies, if any, only have one activity with the intent filter.
I guess that in your AndroidManifest.xml, you've got both activities having the LAUNCHER intent-filter. Remove it from the second activity, and you should be set!
You have
<intent-filter . . . >
<action android:name="android.intent.action.MAIN" />
<category android:name="android.intent.category.LAUNCHER" />
</intent-filter>
along with
android:icon="#drawable/icon.png"
set for both activities.
What that means is that this is a launcher icon, put me on the home screen. Only set those for the activit(ies/y) you want on the home screen.
I was searching answer to exactly the same question. It appears the only thing needed (in addition to recommendations on removing MAIN and LAUNCHER intent filter) is to rebuild your project - that will clean things up and upon next launch I saw single icon on my device (just running application on device after changes did not help).
if anyone run into this issue using Pebble SDK. I noticed PebbleKit Androidmanifest.xml holds a LAUNCHER activity as well. This is what caused it for me. Just remove this part. It will not effect Pebble functionality.
SIMPLE answer..
REMOVE:
<category android:name="android.intent.category.LAUNCHER" />
From your AndroidManifest.xml
Leave your intent-filter alone.
<intent-filter android:icon=”drawable resource” android:priority=”Integer” /intent-filter>
Priorities are set for the parent component. This setting may help you to set the parent icon for your Android app development.
Hello I am fairly new to Android App Development and was looking at some example code here. I understand that the manifest xml here states that by pressing the app to launch the map but I wanted to implement a login as well. I was wondering if anyone here had any advice in terms of how popular apps format this? Do they have a login as their launcher or the application itself? Thank You!
<activity
android:name=".MapsActivity"
android:label="#string/title_activity_maps" >
<intent-filter>
<action android:name="android.intent.action.MAIN" />
<category android:name="android.intent.category.LAUNCHER" />
</intent-filter>
</activity>
It seems you look to change the launcher activity
<activity android:name=".LoginActivity" android:label="#string/title" >
<intent-filter>
<action android:name="android.intent.action.MAIN" />
<category android:name="android.intent.category.LAUNCHER" />
</intent-filter>
</activity>
You can put the login activity that way
I have pasted the code of my Androidmanifest.xml,how does android decides which activity to launch when application starts ? In this case its the mainactivity. What changes to I need to make if I want to launch AnotherActivity when application launches?
<application
android:allowBackup="true"
android:icon="#drawable/ic_launcher"
android:label="#string/app_name"
android:theme="#style/AppTheme" >
<activity
android:name="com.example.MainActivity"
android:label="#string/app_name" >
<intent-filter>
<action android:name="android.intent.action.MAIN" />
<category android:name="android.intent.category.LAUNCHER" />
</intent-filter>
</activity>
<activity
android:name="com.example.AnotherActivity"
android:label="#string/app_name" >
<intent-filter>
<action android:name="android.intent.action.MAIN" />
<category android:name="android.intent.category.LAUNCHER" />
</intent-filter>
</activity>
</application>
The MAIN element specifies that this is the "main" entry point to the application. The LAUNCHER element specifies that this activity should be listed in the system's application launcher (to allow users to launch this activity).
<activity
android:name="com.example.MainActivity"
android:label="#string/app_name" >
<intent-filter>
<action android:name="android.intent.action.MAIN" />
<category android:name="android.intent.category.LAUNCHER" />
</intent-filter>
</activity>
Just remove the intent filter from the next activity!!
When the user selects your app icon from the Home screen, the system calls the onCreate() method for the Activity in your app that you've declared to be the "launcher" (or "main") activity. This is the activity that serves as the main entry point to your app's user interface.
You can define which activity to use as the main activity in the Android manifest file, AndroidManifest.xml, which is at the root of your project directory.
The main activity for your app must be declared in the manifest with an that includes the MAIN action and LAUNCHER category. For example:
<activity android:name=".MainActivity" android:label="#string/app_name">
<intent-filter>
<action android:name="android.intent.action.MAIN" />
<category android:name="android.intent.category.LAUNCHER" />
</intent-filter>
</activity>
Based on this, we can conclude that you currently have a faulty configuration. Only one activity can have the Intent filter for Main (so you should remove the <intent-filter> from your .MainActivity if you want to use AnotherActivity as you "Home" Activity).
<activity
android:name="com.example.AnotherActivity"
android:label="#string/app_name" >
<intent-filter>
<action android:name="android.intent.action.MAIN" />
<category android:name="android.intent.category.LAUNCHER" />
</intent-filter>
</activity>
<activity android:name="MainActivity" ></activity>
As stated in our conversation, you want to show a determinate action at launch, with is own functions and layout. The solution is to use one Activity which inflate Fragment1 or Fragment2, based on your condition.
Dealing with Fragment is very difficult, but when you will master them, you will have fun. There are few example on the net about Fragment, but i tell you this: read and practice is the only way you will learn something. Copy and paste from other source code / example will not help you. Good luck!
I have created app to act like an home launcher. So when user clicks on the home button I get Complete action using Launcher or my app's name say for example "myhomelauncher".
When I click on home button and click myhomelauncher my application loads everything from first perfectly fine. Now when I am in the second screen in my application say I am looking at activity 2 in my app and now I click on Home button and click myhomelauncher I endup getting the same activity 2 windows it is not reloading. (It should reload and show up activity 1 rather than 2)
I have seen lot of apps that can reload everytime I click their launcher. Why not mine?
Here is what I have done in my manifest.xml
<activity
android:name=".MyLauncher"
android:label="#string/app_name"
android:persistent="true"
android:screenOrientation="landscape">
<intent-filter>
<action android:name="android.intent.action.MAIN" />
<category android:name="android.intent.category.LAUNCHER" />
<category android:name="android.intent.category.HOME" />
<category android:name="android.intent.category.DEFAULT" />
</intent-filter>
</activity>
I am not sure where is the mistake?
Please have a look into the documentation - what can be of interest to your problem are the following settings:
android:clearTaskOnLaunch
android:launchMode
I would suspect setting android:launchMode to singleTask could solve your problem, altough be careful which side effects this will cause.
So:
<activity
android:name=".MyLauncher"
android:label="#string/app_name"
android:persistent="true"
android:screenOrientation="landscape"
android:launchMode="singleTask">
<intent-filter>
<action android:name="android.intent.action.MAIN" />
<category android:name="android.intent.category.LAUNCHER" />
<category android:name="android.intent.category.HOME" />
<category android:name="android.intent.category.DEFAULT" />
</intent-filter>
</activity>
should do the trick.
Look up launchMode. But be careful, with great power, comes great responsibility.
This is the relevant section in a menifest that seems to work for me. Note that I have put singleInstance in the launch mode because I don't want more than one of my app, ever.
<application android:icon="#drawable/icon" android:label="#string/app_name">
<activity android:name=".usbEffects"
android:theme="#android:style/Theme.NoTitleBar.Fullscreen"
android:windowSoftInputMode="stateAlwaysHidden"
android:screenOrientation="portrait"
android:launchMode="singleInstance"
android:configChanges="keyboardHidden|orientation"
android:label="#string/app_name" >
<intent-filter>
<action android:name="android.intent.action.MAIN" />
<category android:name="android.intent.category.DEFAULT" />
<category android:name="android.intent.category.LAUNCHER" />
</intent-filter>
</activity>
If on run/debug configuration, if I specify a launch activity, then my app runs fine, but when I select 'Launch Default Activity' I get "No Launcher activity found!" error from android adb despite the fact that I have specified the launch activity in my manifest file. I'm using android 2.1.
I've tried refreshing the file/project, clean and rebuild, deleting the file and re-writing it, creating a new project and copy/pasting all the code across and doing Android Tools -> Fix Project Properties. I've tried Android Tools-> Rename Application Package, which prompts me to update the project launch configuration (to which I say yes, but it still doesn't fix the problem).
I've also tried different devices. My Home activity extends another activity and is in its own Home.java file in my src folder. This is what my manifest file looks like:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<manifest xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
package="com.geogreenweb.localvore"
android:versionCode="1"

UPDATE: I changed one of the activity labels, and the different label appears in the app, so the changes to the manifest file are being picked up, but still I get the No Launch Activity error
UPDATE 2: I managed to solve the problem by creating a new project in the end, but only if I select the option to create an activity when making the new project, then copy/paste in the rest of the stuff into the project
if you remove the :
<action android:name="android.intent.action.SEARCH" />
it will launch normally.
i don't know why .. it just worked for me. i'm still searching why?!!
UPDATE 1:
i found this:
No Launcher activity found, despite being declared in manifest.xml
still don't know why? .. still searching for it.
UPDATE 2: GOT IT!
http://developer.android.com/guide/topics/intents/intents-filters.html
A filter has fields that parallel the action, data, and category fields of an Intent object. An implicit intent is tested against the filter in all three areas. To be delivered to the component that owns the filter, it must pass all three tests. If it fails even one of them, the Android system won't deliver it to the component — at least not on the basis of that filter. However, since a component can have multiple intent filters, an intent that does not pass through one of a component's filters might make it through on another.
in our case this means that the system sends an intent with the MAIN action and LAUNCH category. it finds an with the following:
MAIN action ..............[ pass ]
LAUNCH category .... [ pass ]
SEARCH action .........[ fail ]
but .. if you put the SEARCH action in another , the containing the MAIN and LAUNCHER criteria passes.
The only thing I can think of is the lines
<activity android:name="com.geogreenweb.localvore.Home"
Try using just
<activity android:name=".Home"
instead
Try adding the following to your main launcher Activity right next to the launcher category element.
<category android:name="android.intent.category.DEFAULT"/>
