I am trying to implement a FileProvider to allow me to share local, private images with email and other apps. I have been following the instructions of the Android Developers Guide and get down to where I have to use the "getUriForFile" function and Eclipse tells me I have to create the method. I was under the impression this should be in the android.support.v4.content package and it is in the Referenced Libraries for the app, but it is not there.
I have added the following to my Manifest:

But when I get to this point in my code I am stymied:

What step am I missing?
Yes, instructions in dev guide are not the greatest. getUriForFile() is a static method of the FileProvider class so you need to do:
Uri contentUri =
FileProvider.getUriForFile(this, "com.gelbintergalactic.fileprovider", newfile);

Your file is in getExternalFilesDir(). That does not match files-path in your FileProvider metadata. Either:
Switch to getFilesDir() (a much better solution from a security standpoint), or
Switch to external-files-path

If your targetSdkVersion >= 24, then we have to use FileProvider class to give access to the particular file or folder to make them accessible for other apps.
1) First Add a FileProvider tag in AndroidManifest.xml under tag as below:

The main thing to get camera and gallery URI working is provider paths.
you need to create a provider_paths.xml to /res/xml/ dir

One more thing, I've found that we need to set vmPolicy in Application class like this

Double check your camera and external storage permission in manifest file and there you go with nougat URI.

All I am trying to do is take a picture with the Camera, save it and display it in an ImageView.
I followed the android tutorial above and keep getting an error (a NullPointerException) on the line:
Uri photoURI = FileProvider.getUriForFile(this, "com.example.android.fileprovider", photoFile);
I know I need to configure the FileProvider in my app's manifest and the "authorities" has to match. I don't quite understand what I should be putting in the authorities arguments. I copied all of the code from the tutorial including the file res/xml/file_paths.xml. Ask any questions if necessary.

I finally got it to work!
Remember to put the provider tag INSIDE the application tag in the manifest file - that was my mistake (my provider tag was OUTSIDE of the application tag), and the reason you get this error, which basically says it cannot find the definition of the Provider.
Also make sure you have the correct paths in the .xml file. Here is my version:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<paths xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android">
<external-path
name="my_images"
path="Android/data/org.projects.cameraapp/files/Pictures" />
</paths>
Of course you have to change the path for your own application.
My actual Provider then looks like this:

I have some files in custom folder in the internal storage. I need to open the files using external application like Adobe. I planned to open using FileProvider. But the third party application is stopped when trying to open the the document. I really don't know what mistake I did in the code.
