Overlap views in horizontal LinearLayout

I need to design a layout with five ImageViews in horizontal orientation.
I can reach my idea with a basic LinearLayout, but I want a design pattern like the following image:
Note: All ImageViews are in oval design.
Any ideas?

you can overlap items in a LinearLayout using negative margins, but they won't stack in that order.
you could use a RelativeLayout instead. you'd lay out the items from outside to inside to achieve the desired stacking order.
here's an example with a fixed width:

if you don't have a fixed-width container, you'll have to calculate the margins in code with this approach.
of course, if you don't have a fixed width, you'll need code of some sort anyway as there's nothing built into android that's really meant for this sort of thing.

You can use a RelativeLayout for this task. Here's an example:

Note that here, the last ImageView is the one that will be on top of all others.

How to make my layout fit in all screens

I have gone through many relative answers on stockoverflow and link's such as Supporting Different Screens or Screen Compatibility Mode
I have created the following relative layout and I am trying to make it look alike in all android screens.
My images fit perfect for 4.8 inch phones but when I try to use a 2.8 inch display or something like like that, some buttons go on top of others, and they do not shrink.
Does anyone have any suggestion how to improve that?
And preferably without increasing the size of my app.

I will suggest you to use LinearLayout instead of Relativelayout specially for the issue :

Because When you give orientation to Linearlayout then Its child will never get on top of each other for any resolution or screen size.
And If you give them Weight then Views will be in fix position for Each and Every device.

I need to create layout compatible for all screen sizes,created separte layout for xlarge sizes(800x1280,720x1280 etc). Here I cant upload image due to reputation,need to place one main button on center of the layout ,place 3 buttons on curvely on left and right side of middle button.please can anyone help me to create the layout compatible for all screen sizes without using dp or fixed points.

you can use android:layout_weight attribute. It will allow you to use percentages to define your buttons.
For EX:

Now you have given percentages values to buttons so they will be displayed on any size of screen to their percent value of the whole screen.

ImageView: scale properly above Button

I'm new to Android and everything went well until now I have to deal with the layout.
What I want is this layout:
Layout how it should be:
The image should be properly scaled and keep its ratio.
That's why I tried this XML code, but it doesn't work the way I want. The image keeps its ratio but the left and right side are out of the screen when vertical and cut at the top and bottom when horizontal:

It looks like android:scaleType="fitCenter" is what you are looking for

you have to design 2 layout for you vertical state and horizontal state and put them in two different folder in your android project:
while you put your regular layout in the layout folder you should put the landscape layout in the layout-land folder.

Try setting android:scaleType="fitXY" to your ImageView.

Android Honeycomb: Off-center button text - unable to center

I have a problem with centering text on buttons in a layout that I am working on. Please see the screenshot below (taken within eclipse's "Graphical Layout" tab):
I'm not sure what's causing this. I tried playing around with the individual layout properties of the buttons, but this has not had any effect. The following is my layout hierarchy:

I ended up updating eclipse and that fixed the problem. I was extremely disappointed that restarting the IDE did not change anything, especially since the XML had not posed any problems for others. Thanks for the help, everyone!

Make sure the width of your buttons at the bottom is set to 0dp. Also make sure that their parent LinearLayout has a width set to match_parent.
