I am having troubles adding another button to left of the (...) button.
I want to add the button so the row will keep its proportions (take all width of the line)

As far as I can see, you are using horizontal LinearLayout as a root layout for your items. I would change it to RelativeLayout. Also if you need your layout occupy the whole width - you need to get rid of 200dip hardcoding and replace it with match_parent

You are setting the layout_width of each view yourself. You should know that there is a maximum width of screen that is available. Moreover, you are setting the width of button as match_parent that is not proper way when the neighbouring views have some fixed width. If your are using LinearLayout try layout_weight attribute. Play around and try to experiment.

I've tried making the parent a relativelayout without success and it won't align to the bottom either. Initially I thought the layout wasn't filling the whole screen but since its height and width are match_parent I don't think that's the problem. in android studio it is displaying correctly though so I must be missing something small.
I also tried using the gravity and layoutgravity parameters and a combination of the two but without success

Thanks to ank I was able to figure out that the reason why the RelativeLayout didn't fill my screen is that I used it in an alertDialog. So RelativeLayouts parent isn't the screen but the alertDialog. Since an alertDialog wraps its content it doesn't fill the entire screen.

I have a particular LinearLayout where I have multiple components. I have a ScrollView in which I have another LinearLayout with a ImageView, two TextViews and Buttons. I also have a ListView at the very bottom of the page which shows comments. The problem is I want the ListView to show completely without any scrolling. The ListView scrolls giving a bad design. Take scrollview and Listview inside a one parent LinearLayout and assign weight for both , this may help you..
As per sending code in your problem you have used scroll view height with match_parent. To resolve this you have to set fixed height in your xml file or in your java file by get reference of your scroll view

for the left aligned chat box in case for another user, you just have to remove android:layout_gravity and android:gravity! Thanks!
just remove
android:layout_alignParentRight="true"
android:layout_alignParentTop="true"
from
<TextView
android:id="#+id/item_text_1"
...
as you want to align its parent not the view itself
