I'm trying to populate value of the next spinner from the previous spinner. In this case, what I did yet is generating all values inside the spinner means, no matter which value I select in the previous spinner it is always showing all values in the next spinner. I'm using five spinners that needs to populate values according to the previous one. Here I'm using a library for the spinner. The library is as follows.
'com.toptoche.searchablespinner:searchablespinnerlibrary:1.3.1'
Here I'm sharing my whole code/class for your consideration. There is no error and I get all values in respective spinner but I want to get values according to the previous one. here is my code.

So how can I get rid of this problem? I need help.
You are declaring all adapter at once in onCreate().
Instead declare just first adapter with values in onCreate() and declare other adapters with empty values.
#Override
protected void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) {
--------;
// Set spninner adapter
regionAdapter = new ArrayAdapter<>(this, android.R.layout.simple_spinner_item, Region);
districtAdapter = new ArrayAdapter<>(this, android.R.layout.simple_spinner_item, new String[]());
upzAdapter = new ArrayAdapter<>(this, android.R.layout.simple_spinner_item, new String[]());
unionAdapter = new ArrayAdapter<>(this, android.R.layout.simple_spinner_item, new String[]());
villageAdapter = new ArrayAdapter<>(this, android.R.layout.simple_spinner_item, new String[]());
------
spinner_region.setOnItemSelectedListener(this);
}
Now on itemSelectedListener, filter the desired values if needed and add the values to the next required adapter and notify the values along with adding listener to next spinner(adding listener is up to you, how you want to handle the things)
#Override
public void onItemSelected(AdapterView<?> parent, View view, int position, long id) {
if (parent.getId() == R.id.region) {
positions = spinner_region.getSelectedItemPosition();
String[] filteredDistrict = District.filter(Region[position]) // District.filter is not any predefined function, assuming some filter needed for selected Districts
districtAdapter.addValues(filteredDistrict);
districtAdapter.notifyDataSetChanged()
spinner_district.setOnItemSelectedListener(this);
}
}
Other than that filtering logic depends on your usecase.
I want the spinner to open up by itself when I run the activity, so I'm using the performClick() method but it's showing this error:
Caused by: android.view.WindowManager$BadTokenException: Unable to add window -- token null is not valid; is your activity running?
What should I do?
Here is my code
public class FacilityComplaint extends AppCompatActivity implements AdapterView.OnItemSelectedListener {
private Spinner spinner1;
private static final String[] suggestions = {"Select from suggestions", "Switch not working",
"Switch faulty", "Switch light not working", "Switch handle faulty"};
#Override
protected void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) {
super.onCreate(savedInstanceState);
setContentView(R.layout.activity_facility_complaint);
spinner1 = (Spinner) findViewById(R.id.spinner1);
ArrayAdapter<String> adapter = new ArrayAdapter<String>(FacilityComplaint.this,
android.R.layout.simple_spinner_item, suggestions);
adapter.setDropDownViewResource(android.R.layout.simple_spinner_dropdown_item);
spinner1.setAdapter(adapter);
spinner1.setOnItemSelectedListener(this);
spinner1.performClick();
}
public void onItemSelected(AdapterView<?> parent, View v, int position, long id) {
switch (position) {
case 0:
//do something
break;
case 1:
//do something
break;
case 2:
//do something
break;
case 3:
//do something
break;
case 4:
//do something
break;
}
}
public void onNothingSelected(AdapterView<?> parent) {
}
}
For spinner you have don't need to implement "AdapterView.OnItemSelectedListener" Create like this .
spinner1 = (Spinner) findViewById(R.id. spinner1);
ArrayAdapter adapter = ArrayAdapter.createFromResource(this,
suggestions, android.R.layout.simple_spinner_item);
adapter1.setDropDownViewResource(
android.R.layout.simple_spinner_dropdown_item);
spinner1.setAdapter(adapter);
spinner1.performClick();
// Get selecte index or Suggestions
spinner1.setOnItemSelectedListener(new AdapterView.OnItemSelectedListener() {
public void onItemSelected(AdapterView<?> parent, View view,
int pos, long id) {
String selectedSugg = suggestions[pos];
Log.d("Suggestions ", selectedSugg);
}
#Override
public void onNothingSelected(AdapterView<?> arg0) {
}
});
my problem is the following. I have 2 Spinners in one activity. I want that both spinner items should be saved in the DB. But there is a slight difference between both spinners:
Spinner 1: Is populated by data from other db-table - when it is the only spinner in the mentioned activity, it works.
Spinner 2: Has default values. I am not sure if added it correctly to my activity. Anyway, after i added it to my saving the data is not working anymore.
Please help me what am I doing wrong??

}
}
);
}
}
EDIT:
I tried to run the app by setting a few breakpoints.
When trying to run this line selectedTransport = (String) ChooseTransport.getSelectedItem(); the debugger posts Cannot find local variable 'ChooseTransport'
I solved the problem:
I implemented an own method for ChooseTransport- Spinner and now it works. I also figured out that the order how I add the data to the DB was not right. I changed this too.
See here my method for my second spinner:
private void loadTransportSpinnerData(){
ArrayAdapter<CharSequence> spinnerArrayAdapter = ArrayAdapter.createFromResource(this, R.array.transport, android.R.layout.simple_spinner_dropdown_item);
spinnerArrayAdapter.setDropDownViewResource(android.R.layout.simple_spinner_dropdown_item);
ChooseTransport.setPrompt("Transport auswählen");
ChooseTransport.setAdapter(spinnerArrayAdapter);
ChooseTransport.setOnItemSelectedListener(new AdapterView.OnItemSelectedListener() {
#Override
public void onItemSelected(AdapterView<?> adapterView, View view, int i, long l) {
selectedTransport = (String) ChooseTransport.getSelectedItem();
}
#Override
public void onNothingSelected(AdapterView<?> adapterView) {
}
});
}
I have 2 spinners and 1 textview.When i selected two different elements from these spinners textview must be changed everytime.For 1 spinner everything is OK but it doesnt work on 2 spinners.
Here's what i tried:
public class Chords extends Activity implements AdapterView.OnItemSelectedListener {
String[] notes = {"A", "B", "C", "D", "E", "F", "G"};
String[] mode = {"m","m7","5","M","7M","dim","aug","sus2"};
Spinner sp;
Spinner spinner2;
TextView textView;
protected void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) {
super.onCreate(savedInstanceState);
setContentView(R.layout.chords_screen);
System.out.println(notes.length);
textView = (TextView) findViewById(R.id.textView);
sp= (Spinner) findViewById(R.id.spinner);
spinner2=(Spinner) findViewById(R.id.spinner2);
ArrayAdapter<String> adapter_state = new ArrayAdapter<String>(this,
android.R.layout.simple_spinner_item,notes);
ArrayAdapter<String> adapter_state2 = new ArrayAdapter<String>(this,
android.R.layout.simple_spinner_item,mode);
adapter_state.setDropDownViewResource(android.R.layout.simple_spinner_dropdown_item);
adapter_state2.setDropDownViewResource(android.R.layout.simple_spinner_dropdown_item);
sp.setAdapter(adapter_state);
sp.setOnItemSelectedListener(this);
spinner2.setAdapter(adapter_state2);
sp.setOnItemSelectedListener(this);
}
public void onItemSelected(AdapterView<?> parent, View view, int position,
long id) {
switch(position)
{
case 0:
textView.setText("Am");
break;
}
}
#Override
public void onNothingSelected (AdapterView < ? > parent){
}
}
You have 2 spinners. You set onItemSelected listener. but your implementation is wrong i think. In switch case you have to identify which spinner value is changing. you can do like this ..
I edited all code for you
public class MainActivity extends ActionBarActivity implements OnItemSelectedListener {
String[] notes = {"A", "B", "C", "D", "E", "F", "G"};
String[] mode = {"m","m7","5","M","7M","dim","aug","sus2"};
Spinner sp;
Spinner spinner2;
TextView textView;
#Override
protected void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) {
super.onCreate(savedInstanceState);
setContentView(R.layout.activity_main);
//initialization
textView = (TextView) findViewById(R.id.textView);
sp = (Spinner) findViewById(R.id.spinner);
spinner2=(Spinner) findViewById(R.id.spinner2);
//creating adapter
ArrayAdapter<String> adapter_state = new ArrayAdapter<String>(this,android.R.layout.simple_spinner_item,notes);
ArrayAdapter<String> adapter_state2 = new ArrayAdapter<String>(this,android.R.layout.simple_spinner_item,mode);
//setting drop down list type
adapter_state.setDropDownViewResource(android.R.layout.simple_spinner_dropdown_item);
adapter_state2.setDropDownViewResource(android.R.layout.simple_spinner_dropdown_item);
//setting adapter to spinner
sp.setAdapter(adapter_state);
spinner2.setAdapter(adapter_state2);
//setting listener to spinner
sp.setOnItemSelectedListener(this);
spinner2.setOnItemSelectedListener(this);
}
#Override
public void onItemSelected(AdapterView<?> parent, View view, int position,long id) {
// TODO Auto-generated method stub
switch(parent.getId())
{
case R.id.spinner:
textView.setText(""+notes[position]);
break;
case R.id.spinner2:
textView.setText(""+mode[position]);
break;
}
}
#Override
public void onNothingSelected(AdapterView<?> parent) {
// TODO Auto-generated method stub
}
To do so edit like this
case R.id.spinner:
textView.setText(sp.getSelectedItem().toString()+spinner2.getSelectedItem().toString());
break;
case R.id.spinner2:
textView.setText(sp.getSelectedItem().toString()+spinner2.getSelectedItem().toString());
break;
My MainActivity, which extends ActionBarActivity, has a ListView, which I want to reload using notifyDataSetChanged(), but I do not know how to do this.
My code so far:
public class MainActivity extends ActionBarActivity {
private JournalEntryDataSource datasource;
private ListView listView = null;
#Override
public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) {
super.onCreate(savedInstanceState);
setContentView(R.layout.activity_main);
datasource = new JournalEntryDataSource(this);
datasource.open();
listView = (ListView) findViewById(R.id.list);
List<JournalEntry> values = datasource.getAllJournalEntries();
listView.setAdapter(new ArrayAdapter<JournalEntry>(this, R.layout.list_item, R.id.lugares, values));
listView.setOnItemClickListener(new AdapterView.OnItemClickListener() {
public void onItemClick(AdapterView<?> arg0, View v, int position, long id) {
Log.i("app", "Deleting item number " + position);
datasource.deleteJournalEntry((JournalEntry) listView.getAdapter().getItem(position));
//I would like to do this here:
//ArrayAdapter<JournalEntry> adapter = (ArrayAdapter<JournalEntry>) getListAdapter();
//adapter.notifyDataSetChanged();
}
});
}
But I get an error when calling adapter.notifyDatasetChanged()...
Any tips? I've been looking at similar questions and no luck so far...
--------EDITED CODE---------
public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) {
super.onCreate(savedInstanceState);
setContentView(R.layout.activity_main);

listView = (ListView) findViewById(R.id.list);
values = datasource.getAllJournalEntries();
listView.setAdapter(new ArrayAdapter<JournalEntry>(this, R.layout.list_item, R.id.lugares, values));
ArrayAdapter<JournalEntry> adapter = (ArrayAdapter<JournalEntry>) getListAdapter();
// use the SimpleCursorAdapter to show the
// elements in a ListView
listView.setAdapter(new ArrayAdapter<JournalEntry>(this, R.layout.list_item, R.id.lugares, values));
listView.setLongClickable(true);

JournalEntry removeMe = (JournalEntry)listView.getAdapter().getItem(position);
values.remove(removeMe);
datasource.deleteJournalEntry(removeMe);
//adapter.notifyDataSetChanged();
reloadMe();
return true;
}
});
}
public void reloadMe(){
//need to do this better... but meh.
Intent intent = new Intent(this, MainActivity.class);

}
protected ListAdapter getListAdapter() {
ListAdapter adapter = getListView().getAdapter();
if (adapter instanceof HeaderViewListAdapter) {
return ((HeaderViewListAdapter)adapter).getWrappedAdapter();
} else {
return adapter;
}
}
}
Updated Answer for updated code
instead of creating the same activity again, you should choose to set another new adapter object with the new values object.
public void reloadMe(){
//need to do this better... but meh.
//Intent intent = new Intent(this, MainActivity.class);
//this.startActivity(intent);
listView.setAdapter(new ArrayAdapter<JournalEntry>(this, R.layout.list_item, R.id.lugares, values));
}
Perhaps, you are deleting from
datasource.deleteJournalEntry((JournalEntry) listView.getAdapter().getItem(position));
But you did not set "datasource" as the data source of the adapter. If you look carefully you did set the "values" list object-
listView.setAdapter(new ArrayAdapter<JournalEntry>(this, R.layout.list_item, R.id.lugares, values));
Perhaps you may need to also remove from the values list also.
