I am trying to develop a Chat Application in Android. I need to create a layout similar to WhatsApp. Two TextViews - One for message and another one for time. They both should be wrapped to the width and height. I am using a RelativeLayout to align them so that when long message is inserted, the 'Time' view doesnt get pushed to the side.

But using this code, I am getting some empty space between those two views. I have seen some of the questions regarding this but i couldnt get the right solution..
if i use "layout_width:wrap_content" in "msgTextView" they are wrapped side by side, but there is empty space before those two views..
In any case I need to get rid of that empty space so that the background is just applied for those wrapped TextViews. Hope i didnt confuse u

I am trying to get the TextView, "tv_amount" to stay on the right side of the screen. I have tried using android:gravity="right" but that hasn't been working for me. Anyone have any suggestions?

I am expecting the transaction or "tv_amount" to stay be right justified so that end of the number is staying towards the right side of the screen.
I tried using :

but these don't seem to work obviously. I am a beginner when it comes to android development and can't seem to find any answers that have helped anywhere else. They all say to use android:gravity or some other alternative. Maybe there is something in my code that doesn't allow that.

I am dumb. The issue wasn't with the code in my individual recycler view layout code. It was with my activity_main.xml. I set the recycler_view width to "wrap_content" when it should have been "match_parent." Rookie mistake.

As you can see there is a gap between the real text and the bottom of the image... I was expecting to have the bottom of the text matching exactly with the bottom of the image...so question is: How can I align the text to the bottom of the image?
(this also happens for the top text, but in the top instead)

For now I am using:
android:layout_marginBottom="-10dp"
But I wanted something more automatic, some solution that won't depend on dp or screen....but as commented, this might be impossible, because the View needs to make space for letter such as 'y', 'g' and 'j'....but I wish there could be something that will align it based on it's contents, so if there wasn't a 'g', it won't be saving this space.
You should add android:gravity="top" to your top text view and android:gravity="bottom" to your bottom text view to get the desired result.

Is there a way to specify that a view should lie strictly to the left of the center (or strictly to the right of the center)? I have two textviews, one for LOGIN and one for REGISTER. I have them as children of RelativeLayout. No matter what I do I can't get them to behave. The one configuration that works in the Graphical Layout of eclipse, only shows the registration button on a real device. Here it is

If I set them as children of a horizontal linearLayout, how do I specify their relationship to get it to work? I already tried that and no avail.
I wish I could post this as a comment but I don't quite have the rep... Anyway, to clarify, do you want the items to be right next to each other on the same line? If so the LinearLayout should work just fine...

Should work just fine. If not you may try playing with weights depending on which one you want to take up more space. For weights to work you will need to see the width of both to fill_parent.
I have a listview with a custom adapter in which I have 3 textviews, two are next to each other and one is below the others. The problem I am running into though, is when the first textview extends, it pushes the other textview off the screen.
I have not been able to successfully get this to work, here is an example of what's happening:
As you can see when the first textview gets too long, it then pushes the other text off the screen. I would like it so it wraps but the date textview is also showing. It should also be functional in horizontal view.

I am assuming that the text view being pushed is the liDate one.
You need to put this one before the liName in your layout and set the width to "wrap_content" and align it right. Then you lace the liName to the left of it with "fill_parent" width
So it would look like this:

I have been having problems creating a relative layout in XML for a list item to be used for a series of items in a ListView. I have tried for hours and am tearing my hair out trying to get it to look how I want but cannot get everything to appear in the correct spot and not overlap or mis-align. I can get the first image and next two textviews in place but cannot get the last textview and imageview.
I have attached a wireframe style image of how I am trying for it to look and was wondering if someone could help me out?
The ImageView on the right is a set icon of the full height of the row with padding around it?
The two TextViews take up the majority of the width. The Address textview has the possibility of the text being long so it may need to get truncated if it runs out of space, or ideally have the font size shrink?
The next TextView will just hold a small string of max 5 characters.
The last ImageView is a small arrow to imply that this list item is clickable for more infomation. It needs to be centred like shown.
I would like if the icon, last textview, and last image always be in the same place/alignment down the list.
If someone could offer some assistance on this I would be so grateful.
