I'm using ABS for backwards compatibility. In one of my activities, I'm using Action Bar tabs which appear before custom view (in landscape) in action bar so I can't use that. So i'm using Action bar title. So in short, my question is how do I increase the spacing between the title and the icon?
I added some spacing like this:
actionBar.setTitle(" " + myTitle);
I don't think it should be done this way but I've searched a lot I couldn't find any solution for this without using custom view which I can't because I'm using AB tabs.
So if anyone else has a better (cleaner) solution, do answer. For others, this works better than anything else I tried.
Cheers!
Adding these link in Toolbar declaration in xml file.
app:contentInsetLeft="16dp"
app:contentInsetStart="16dp"
app:contentInsetEnd="16dp"
app:titleMarginStart="32dp"
Pay attention at the app prefix. This worked for me with Android 4.4.2 and Android 5.1.

I want this type of custom title bar
But can anyone tell me what the portion marked with red is made of? I mean are they tabs or image buttons or something else? Please don't give me links on how to apply a custom title bar, I already know it. But I don't know what the red-marked portion is (tabs or image buttons etc) And how can I have that vertical line between Search and Make Video option (in the portion that's marked red) I'm using Gingerbread.
I tried using search engines but how can I search when I don't know the name of the thing I want to search :s
They are called ActionBar Action Items. See: http://developer.android.com/guide/topics/ui/actionbar.html\
As for dividers, take a look at: ActionBar MenuItem Divider
You should to use ActionBarSherlock.
http://actionbarsherlock.com/
This is for add actionbar in devices android <3.x.
I am creating an application with ActionBarSherlock and using ActionBar tabs. Below is how I am defining tabs:
actionBar.addTab(actionBar.newTab().setText("test").setTabListener(new TabListener<AccountsListFragment>(this, "accounts",AccountsListFragment.class)));
I am trying to change the height of the tabs. From what I understand there is no way to change just the height of the tabs. You also have to change the height of the main action bar(I am pulling my definition of the main action bar from)
http://developer.android.com/design/patterns/actionbar.html#considerations-split-action-bars
So how you change the height of the action bar is using the below style inside the main theme

100dp

100dp

The above code seems to work on all devices to change both the Main action bar and the tabs except jellybean. I tested this on a 4.1.2 galaxy nexus. Also on a 4.2 Nexus 7. It seems to work the same on both. It only changes the main action bar and not the tab height at all.
We also tried a custom view for the tabs which did not help us.
If anyone can point me to where in google it says that they do not allow changing height of tabs anymore(Which I doubt is the case) or give me a style to fix this issue. I would greatly appreciate it. If you even give me an example on a normal action bar and not sherlock that should help me.
To me it sounds like a silent bug fix. They make some of these at every new release. I doesn't make sense that changing the height of the actionbar should increase the size of the tabs and it isn't something that has been encouraged by Google, rather it's a hack developers have found nice to use. Your only other option is to make it yourself, but it's quite complex and could prove to be time consuming.

Change Actionbar height on Android JellyBean
I want to show Action Bar like below.
I have already used this library clickhere
But it takes only two icons on Action Bar. If I add four items, then last two are shown me like menu. I want all in Action bar same as image above.
Is it possible? if yes, then HOW? Can I change Action Bar color or its default style available in Device?
Thanks in Advance.
I recommend you use this:
http://jgilfelt.github.com/android-actionbarstylegenerator/
to style your ActionBar.
If you want all the 4 icons to be there, just add this attribute to all the menu items:
android:showAsAction="always"
hello try this library
it sure help you And you may have to add you own logic to handle this in below 2.3 Android OS and above 3.0 Android OS.
there is many demo sample available like below :
There is no way you can be sure of the number of icons displayed in the action bar. There is a large varierty of Android devices out there and they all have different screen sizes. That's why you have to prioritize the actions available in a menu : the most important will be displayed as actions in the action bars and the others will be displayed in the "menu" : the action overflow.
You should think of actions in a functional way, not a graphical way.
With ref to Image that you attached you should decide which design pattern you want to use in your application, there are many UI patterns available for mobiles, tablets. The image you attached looks like Side Navigation UI pattern. It's better you decide which UI pattern perfect for your app.. then start implementing it with custom action bar libs (if you want action bar in less than Android 3.0 ver) or any other.
Hi I am a newbie to android.I need to know how to design this type of layout using xml they are using imagebuttons in bottom for all layouts
What is the bottom part called Is it Bottombar or tabbar or actionbar or Menubar.
P.S: I want to design on android 2X version. Please dont say refer to developer.android because i didn't find a satisfatory answer
You can use ActionbarSherlock for designing action bars for 2.x android versions. If you want action bar at the bottom, you can use split action bar which is supported by it.
There is a situation in which I want to use Tab bar as well as List navigation, Both at same time in Action bar.
Documentation says 'we can put Actionbar in to list navigation mode or tabs navigation mode'.
Is there any way to use both at same time. Any pointers, help. Thank you in Advance.
Sorry, you can only have one or the other.
That being said, you can use android:actionLayout to convert an options menu item into a custom inflated layout in the action bar. You might be able to use the "tabs navigation mode" while putting your own Spinner to the right of the tabs this way. Personally, I would find this confusing as a user, but perhaps it will work for your use case.
a very late answer, but this is possible by a simple hack. You just have to replace (programatically) the view that is pointed by android.R.id.action_bar_title with a Spinner. I wrote a blog about it. Here's the link
