How can I solve this? I had tried many things in here, and nothing seems to work for me.
I had tried importing and cleaning, buildings and restarting eclipse, and nothing seems to work.

"You have problems with your imports probably your project are using the same two libraries (older and new) and do not know with one should be used.
Check your Libs files, lib-project and references"

I finally found the solution.
This error happens when I added a library that is the same I am using in my project, so, I need to exclude the library from my main project and let just the one that comes with the library I imported to my main project.
So,
1. Go to bould path -> Order and Export
2. Uncheck the jar that is the same that the imported library uses. Click ok.
Now, you are ready to continue developing!

I had bad experiences with this annoying issue, it's seldom how both of you explain, older and new but in essence, problem is beyond an older/newer version of a library.jar, this problem may also appear i.e. with a class with the same class name classA and the same package name com.same.package of libraries.jar of different vendors.
In this case, we have no more choice than rename a package name or a class name. Another risky choice is to purge a class if we know, we won't use anymore.

I'm getting a NoSuchMethodError error when running my Java program. What's wrong and how do I fix it?
Without any more information it is difficult to pinpoint the problem, but the root cause is that you most likely have compiled a class against a different version of the class that is missing a method, than the one you are using when running it.
Look at the stack trace ... If the exception appears when calling a method on an object in a library, you are most likely using separate versions of the library when compiling and running. Make sure you have the right version both places.
If the exception appears when calling a method on objects instantiated by classes you made, then your build process seems to be faulty. Make sure the class files that you are actually running are updated when you compile.
I was having your problem, and this is how I fixed it. The following steps are a working way to add a library. I had done the first two steps right, but I hadn't done the last one by dragging the ".jar" file direct from the file system into the "lib" folder on my eclipse project. Additionally, I had to remove the previous version of the library from both the build path and the "lib" folder.
Step 1 - Add .jar to build path
Step 2 - Associate sources and javadocs (optional)
Step 3 - Actually drag .jar file into "lib" folder (not optional)
Note that in the case of reflection, you get an NoSuchMethodException, while with non-reflective code, you get NoSuchMethodError. I tend to go looking in very different places when confronted with one versus the other.
If you have access to change the JVM parameters, adding verbose output should allow you to see what classes are being loaded from which JAR files.
java -verbose:class <other args>
When your program is run, the JVM should dump to standard out information such as:
...

If using Maven or another framework, and you get this error almost randomly, try a clean install like...
clean install
This is especially likely to work if you wrote the object and you know it has the method.
This is usually caused when using a build system like Apache Ant that only compiles java files when the java file is newer than the class file. If a method signature changes and classes were using the old version things may not be compiled correctly. The usual fix is to do a full rebuild (usually "ant clean" then "ant").
Sometimes this can also be caused when compiling against one version of a library but running against a different version.

To solve it I checked, firstly, Module Dependency Diagram (click in your POM the combination -> Ctrl+Alt+Shift+U or right click in your POM -> Maven -> Show dependencies) to understand where exactly was the conflict between libraries (Intelij IDEA). In my particular case, I had different versions of Jackson dependencies.
1) So, I added directly in my POM of the project explicitly the highest version - 2.8.7 of these two.
In properties:

And as dependency:

Dependency with unwanted version will be excluded from your project.
This can also be the result of using reflection. If you have code that reflects on a class and extracts a method by name (eg: with Class.getDeclaredMethod("someMethodName", .....)) then any time that method name changes, such as during a refactor, you will need to remember to update the parameters to the reflection method to match the new method signature, or the getDeclaredMethod call will throw a NoSuchMethodException.
If this is the reason, then the stack trace should show the point that the reflection method is invoked, and you'll just need to update the parameters to match the actual method signature.
In my experience, this comes up occasionally when unit testing private methods/fields, and using a TestUtilities class to extract fields for test verification. (Generally with legacy code that wasn't designed with unit testing in mind.)
If you are writing a webapp, ensure that you don't have conflicting versions of a jar in your container's global library directory and also in your app. You may not necessarily know which jar is being used by the classloader.
e.g.
tomcat/common/lib
mywebapp/WEB-INF/lib
For me it happened because I changed argument type in function, from Object a, to String a. I could resolve it with clean and build again
In my case I had a multi module project and scenario was like com.xyz.TestClass was in module A and as well as in module B and module A was dependent on module B. So while creating a assembly jar I think only one version of class was retained if that doesn't have the invoked method then I was getting NoSuchMethodError runtime exception, but compilation was fine.

Maybe this is the cause your the issue you faced.
It means the respective method is not present in the class:
If you are using jar then decompile and check if the respective version of jar have proper class.
Check if you have compiled proper class from your source.
I have just solved this error by restarting my Eclipse and run the applcation.
The reason for my case may because I replace my source files without closing my project or Eclipse.
Which caused different version of classes I was using.
Try this way: remove all .class files under your project directories (and, of course, all subdirectories). Rebuild.
Sometimes mvn clean (if you are using maven) does not clean .class files manually created by javac. And those old files contain old signatures, leading to NoSuchMethodError.
Just adding to existing answers. I was facing this issue with tomcat in eclipse. I had changed one class and did following steps,
Cleaned and built the project in eclpise
mvn clean install
Restarted tomcat
Still I was facing same error. Then I cleaned tomcat, cleaned tomcat working directory and restarted server and my issue is gone. Hope this helps someone
These problems are caused by the use of the same object at the same two classes.
Objects used does not contain new method has been added that the new object class contains.

These problems are caused by the concomitant 02 similar class (1 in src, 1 in jar file here is gateway.jar)
To answer the original question. According to java docs here:
"NoSuchMethodError" Thrown if an application tries to call a specified method of a class (either static or instance), and that class no longer has a definition of that method.
Normally, this error is caught by the compiler; this error can only occur at run time if the definition of a class has incompatibly changed.
If it happens in the run time, check the class containing the method is in class path.
Check if you have added new version of JAR and the method is compatible.
I fixed this problem in Eclipse by renaming a Junit test file.
In my Eclipse work space I have an App project and a Test project.
The Test project has the App project as a required project on the build path.
Started getting the NoSuchMethodError.
Then I realized the class in the Test project had the same name as the class in the App project.

After renaming the Test to the correct name "ProjectionTest.java" the exception went away.
NoSuchMethodError : I have spend couple of hours fixing this issue, finally fixed it by just renaming package name , clean and build ... Try clean build first if it doesn't works try renaming the class name or package name and clean build...it should be fixed. Good luck.
I ran into a similar problem when I was changing method signatures in my application.
Cleaning and rebuilding my project resolved the "NoSuchMethodError".
Above answer explains very well ..just to add one thing
If you are using using eclipse use ctrl+shift+T and enter package structure of class (e.g. : gateway.smpp.PDUEventListener ), you will find all jars/projects where it's present. Remove unnecessary jars from classpath or add above in class path. Now it will pick up correct one.
I ran into similar issue.
Caused by: java.lang.NoSuchMethodError: com.abc.Employee.getEmpId()I
Finally I identified the root cause was changing the data type of variable.
Employee.java --> Contains the variable (EmpId) whose Data Type has been changed from int to String.
ReportGeneration.java --> Retrieves the value using the getter, getEmpId().
We are supposed to rebundle the jar by including only the modified classes. As there was no change in ReportGeneration.java I was only including the Employee.class in Jar file. I had to include the ReportGeneration.class file in the jar to solve the issue.
I've had the same problem. This is also caused when there is an ambiguity in classes. My program was trying to invoke a method which was present in two JAR files present in the same location / class path. Delete one JAR file or execute your code such that only one JAR file is used. Check that you are not using same JAR or different versions of the same JAR that contain the same class.

I've encountered this error too.
My problem was that I've changed a method's signature, something like
void invest(Currency money){...}
into
void invest(Euro money){...}
This method was invoked from a context similar to
public static void main(String args[]) {
Bank myBank = new Bank();
Euro capital = new Euro();
myBank.invest(capital);
}
The compiler was silent with regard to warnings/ errors, as capital is both Currency as well as Euro.
The problem appeared due to the fact that I only compiled the class in which the method was defined - Bank, but not the class from which the method is being called from, which contains the main() method.
This issue is not something you might encounter too often, as most frequently the project is rebuilt mannually or a Build action is triggered automatically, instead of just compiling the one modified class.
My usecase was that I generated a .jar file which was to be used as a hotfix, that did not contain the App.class as this was not modified. It made sense to me not to include it as I kept the initial argument's base class trough inheritance.
The thing is, when you compile a class, the resulting bytecode is kind of static, in other words, it's a hard-reference.
The original disassembled bytecode (generated with the javap tool) looks like this:
#7 = Methodref #2.#22 // Bank.invest:(LCurrency;)V
After the ClassLoader loads the new compiled Bank.class, it will not find such a method, it appears as if it was removed and not changed, thus the named error.

The problem in my case was having two versions of the same library in the build path. The older version of the library didn't have the function, and newer one did.
I had a similar problem with my Gradle Project using Intelij.
I solved it by deleting the .gradle (see screenshot below) Package and rebuilding the Project.

I had faced the same issue. I changed the return type of one method and ran the test code of that one class. That is when I faced this NoSuchMethodError. As a solution, I ran the maven builds on the entire repository once, before running the test code again. The issue got resolved in the next single test run.

I happened to make a silly mistake of accessing private static member variables in a non static method. Changing the method to static solved the problem.

Adding google maps library to existing project creates confusing error

I am building an Android app that I want to open google maps with the click of a button. I want the app to find the current location of the user and give them directions to a predefined address. I started building the application before I realized there were special steps that you have to take to include this functionality. To add this feature to my project I followed the directions on these two sites:

The problem is on the second site, when i added the library to my already existing project it caused all of my code that has findViewById(R.id.whatever) or setContentView(R.layout.whatever) to become errors. It is now telling me that i need to import the class R. If I do that it then gives me error messages on the names of all my xml files.
For example in my MainActivity it is telling me that i should change setContentView(R.layout.activity_main) to setContentView(R.layout.activity_list_item) and does this for all references to my xml files for the entire project.
I tried going back and removing the google play services library from the project and starting over but when I removed it the errors still persists. I also tried using the "fix project setup" option in Eclipse but it didn't fix the problem.
I'm wondering if anyone here has experienced this problem before? If so, how can I fix it? The application had no errors before I tried to include the google play services library. I am new to Android development so a lot of the information I have found has been either confusing to understand or doesn't seem to include enough details for me to figure it out. Thanks for your help!
Look at your imports, and check if you are importing the correct R.java from your application package, not from the android package.
Check also if your XMLs don't contain errors, otherwise R.java won't be generated.
In my case android-maps-library had to errors in two files (I have forgotten their names), I edited the two files removing errors my self. And finally I was able to used it quite nice.
i think you have correct yout Project build target, and this how:
right click on your project folder in the package explorer->propreties->Android
then porject build target and choose you Android target (Android x.xx)
but before that you need to remove import android.R;

java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError with external jars in Android project

I've been searching the internet for two days now, and I feel like I've tried everything.
Please let me know if any code snippets might be helpful in finding a solution.
I've created an android application with the standard login activity. In the doInBackground()-method, I invoke a static method from another external class. Since this method will be invoked once the submit button is clicked, the error occurs during runtime. The class is included in my file, and there are no compilation errors. Whenever I tap/click on the Submit-button, I get a java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError referring to a class (in my external jar) that is used and properly included in my external file I refer to in the doInBackground()-method.
All my external libraries are in the 'libs'-folder. I've tried adding them to the build path manually instead and checking the boxes next to them in the 'order and export'-tab instead of the checkbox next to the 'Android Private Libraries' entry. I've tried putting the 'gen'-directory above the 'src'-directory, which didn't change anything either. Restarting eclipse, reimporting the project as a whole, playing around with the order of the external libraries in the build path, fixing project properties and cleaning the project over and over, nothing helped. I've checked this

Despite creating a whole new project and adding my previous files to this new project, I still had the same problem in the new project. I think I figured out where this error came from: When I added my external library, I still had dependencies from the just added .jar to other jars. After adding those as well, the compiler said I needed the java.rmi.Remote class, which is in Java's JRE system library (rt.jar). Adding the whole jre library to my project made the compiler error disappear, the runtime error, however, still persisted.
After some more research I found out that my external library is probably not compatible with the android runtime environment, which means that the jar's .class-files don't have an equivalent .dex-representation which is neededfor the Dalvik virtualmachine on android powered devices. For many java jar's, especially those designed for use with the android platform, those problems don't occur.
Please correct me if I'm wrong, but this explanation seemed pretty plausible to me. Too bad, since this is the only way to currently access our database programmatically.
Make sure you've updated to the latest version of ADT Eclipse plugin and SDK Tools and also make sure "Android Dependencies" is checked in your project properties.

"Android java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: org.jsoup.Jsoup" adding jar to /libs doesn't work?

I'm having the exact problem as described here.
I followed the solutions here.
I have added the jsoup jar to the \libs folder but it just still won't work. Tried loads of different stuff like deleting the jar and re-downloading but nothing has worked? At a loss at what else I can do?

You are doing it wrong. You cant use Jsoup functions in the on-create of Activity. You need to make either Async Task or thread.
This is to prevent doing blocking tasks in you activity.

Put Jsoup.jar both in the AP and ACP. In both projects it should reside in libs, imported as jar by eclipse. Clean the project and it will work.
I had a similar problem, with this context:

I've imported the ACP in AP, with all classes, but it seems to won't recognize jsoup, that was needed to prevent errors during compilation.

Sorry guys, but I could not find good fix for that, I want to emphasize the fact, that i dont use SocketFactory class in my project at all! source code was not changed before this problem, and that's why i think that problem in eclipse or adt or something else, BUT if i use ant(generated by sdk) to build this project there is no problem!!!
I solve this problem by removing Eclipse, Android SDK, Eclipse workspace, and just reinstall them, after this all works fine for now.

project-->properties->java build path->libraries-> remove all including android jars
now go the project browser, right click on the project you are working on,
then android tools---> fix project properties...
do a clean and then build...
I solved the problem (at least for me).
Here's what I did:
Go to Project » Properties » Java Build Path » Libraries
Remove all except the "Android X.Y" click OK.
Go to Project » Clean » Clean projects selected below » select your project and click OK.
That did the trick for me.

Update: well actually I might have to retract my opinion.. the actions removed the error messages but now I am missing certain classes and methods... arggghhhh
I just restarted Eclipse, and the error didn't appear anymore!
I had the same problem,and solved it as follows:
First clean all jars; (This problem must because your some jars)
Delete the project;
Reimport project;
Make sure your sdk is right, and project select one sdk version;
(This is my issue to solve the problem) Right click your project, and select "build-path", next select "add Librarys", and add your private jars;
clean-build, the problem has fixed;
I just had the same problem and I tried all of the solutions listed here with no success (I was starting to get annoyed). Then I removed the project from the workspace and then imported it again, and there were no problems!
This happened to me this way,
I have a quite an old project which I had to start working again today. I use 'Universal Image Downloader' library for basically every project where I have to deal with lots of images. So in this old project I had the source files of 'Universal Image Downloader' included to it's 'src' path. Back then I was a newbie and slowly I started developing my own library which could handle every day simple Android development tasks very easily. Obviously I included the 'Universal Image Downloader' to this.
After dusting off the old project today the first thing I did was to reference my library to speed up the development process but as I was trying to debug I ran into the "Conversion to Dalvik format failed with error 1" over and over again. First I thought it was the support library but even after clearing all libraries and adding only mine and doing a quick 'Fix project properties' I still got it. After trying various solutions I noticed this in the console "java.lang.IllegalArgumentException: already added: Lcom/nostra13/universalimageloader/cache/disc/BaseDiscCache;"
It was as simple as that... I'm trying to compile a class which has already been compiled.
Solution : I just simply removed all the class files I got from 'Universal Image Downloader' library from the 'src' directory. Since my library references "Universal Image Downloader" library the old project started working just fine.
Hit same problem shown on your log when trying to run an example project which was imported into eclipse.
Additional Info: in eclipse's Problems View I see the following error:
"The project cannot be built until build path errors are resolved"
In my case the imported project find the libraries just right(by just right I mean I can see the external path to each of the android libs in this case 2 libs, android.jar and maps.jar). So no shuffling of libs in my case, but might be your problem.
I followed Spock's suggestion of cleaning the project which I had to clean multiple times until it somehow resolve its issues. After, issue was solved I had to specify an AVD for the project to run and soon after was up and running on the emulator. Also, note that my eclipse is set up to Build Automatically.
In my case I'm not missing any class files or anything after the clean as the build is properly generating them.

I was getting the same error. My problem was that i had an android device hooked up to debug with. As soon as I unplugged it I was able to export.
The answer I found was checking the source and library build path in the project's properties. Most likely there will be a duplicate as in something being referenced in both the source and library tabs. So delete the extra in the source tab and then clean the project and you should be good to go.
Either:
javax.net.SocketLibrary is in your source code, or
javax.net.SocketLibrary is included in a JAR file in your project
Under certain conditions it gets its knickers in a twist and the best fix I've found is to remove referenced jars, clean, add them back in and then compile again.
I believe the error can be caused by including the same classes twice.
This error will also occur (and you won't be able to get rid of it by cleaning) when using classes that are not part of the Android environment.
To summarise the information in the link bimbim.in provided (well my understanding when I glanced over it)
The Android Davik VM tries to compile the jars but finds some stuff that it can't compile to .dex files
so
Just create a "lib" directory in the root of the project (where the src, bin res directories are) and add them to the build path. Project Properties... Java Build Path... Libraries.. Add JARs..
I could resolve this issue by creating a new project, looks like the some project settings were creating this issue and could not really find the root cause for that. But, dumping the existing source code onto the new project resovled this issue. If anyone has found the root cause for this problem pls do let me know.
I had the same problem and solved it as follows:
- Go to Project/Properties/Java Build Path/Libraries and remove all JARs except Android
- Do a project clean
- Add the JARs again as External JARs (first time I added them internally, so that might be the problem)
After that the error was gone.
I solved the problem by updating available packages in the Android SDK et AVD manager. No need to remove Eclipse.
Whenever the Project is having the ambitious data. This problem is caused. May be android can't able to find which one choose.
From what I understand, this same cryptic error could be caused from a wide variety of reasons. I've got "Conversion to Dalvik format failed with error 1" error too. In my case the problem was that for some reason Project -> Properties -> Java Compiler was not set to "Enable project specific settings" with proper Java 1.5 settings, but was left to defaults instead (1.6 in my case). Debug, build and test on devices/emulators worked fine, but export always failed with the above error message.
If unsure about the proper settings, create the same project on some alternative location and just copy all needed files from the old project into the new one. This fixed the issue for me.
The next problem with the same error message came from using proguard. Updating to the latest version by replacing the one that came with android sdk, fixed that.

My problem was having a jar file in my src folder. Removing jars from the build path works, but only if you don't need the jar in question. For people who need the jar in question, make sure that your jar file is not in the project folder (maybe just src subtree, but I would keep it separate to test). Put it on your desktop or something and try the "Add external jar.." option. Be sure to remove the jar from the project filesystem before adding another external. Having both is what causes the problem.
I have done it as the instruction of the first answer and it works.(Linux)
I think the problem may caused by SDK or ADT updates.
I do have to clear all the lib in Java Building path and then use android tools to fix the project. After cleaning and rebuild, it works as before.
