DmRomantsov's answer is the right way to scroll to the 12th button. However, getLeft() and getRight() methods return 0 because the layout is not displayed yet on the screen. It is too early to calculate the width of the layout parent and children. To achieve it, you need to do your auto-scroll inside onWindowFocusChanged.

I have a bit misunderstand the real request. Actually, you wanted to auto-scroll until a chosen child view, and display this view at the middle of the screen.
Then, I changed the last int positionLeftWidth which refers now to the left position of the chosen view relative to its parent, the number of children contained in one screen, and the half width of the chosen view. So, the code is the same as above, except positionLeftWidth:

Sorry for the confusing title, I cannot express the problem very concisely...
I have an Android app with a ListView that uses a circular / "infinite" adapter, which basically means I can scroll it up or down as much as I want and the items will wrap around when it reaches the top or bottom, making it seem to the user as if he is spinning an infinitely long list of (~100) repeating items.
The point of this setup is to let the user select a random item, simply by spinning / flinging the listview and waiting to see where it stops. I decreased the friction of the Listview so it flings a bit faster and longer and this seems to work really nice. Finally I placed a partially transparent image on top of the ListView to block out the top and bottom items (with a transition from transparent to black), making it seem as if the user is "selecting" the item in the middle, as if they were on a rotating "wheel" that they control by flinging.
There is one obvious problem: after flinging the ListView does not stop at a particular item, but it can stop hovering between two items (where the first visible item is then only partially shown). I want to avoid this because in that case it is not obvious which item has been "randomly selected".
Long story short: after the ListView has finished scrolling after flinging, I want it to stop on a "whole" row, instead of on a partially visible row.
Right now I implemented this behavior by checking when the scrolling has stopped, and then selecting the first visible item, as such:

This works reasonably well, apart from one glaringly obvious problem... The first visible item might only be visible for a pixel or two. In that case, I want the ListView to jump "up" for those two pixels so that the second visible item is selected. Instead, of course, the first visible item is selected which means the ListView jumps "down" almost an entire row (minus those two pixels).
In short, instead of jumping to the first visible item, I want it to jump to the item that is visible the most. If the first visible item is less than half visible, I want it to jump to the second visible item.
Here's an illustration that hopefully conveys my point. The left most ListView (of each pair) shows the state after flinging has stopped (where it comes to a halt), and the right ListView shows how it looks after it made the "jump" by selecting the first visible item. On the left I show the current (wrong) situation: Item B is only barely visible, but it is still the first visible item so the listView jumps to select that item - which is not logical because it has to scroll almost an entire item height to get there. It would be much more logical to scroll to Item C (which is depicted on the right) because that is "closer".

How can I achieve this behavior? The only way I can think of is to somehow measure how much of the first visible item is visible. If that is more than 50%, then I jump to that position. If it is less than 50%, I jump to that position + 1. However I have no clue how to measure that...

You can get the visible dimensions of a child using the getChildVisibleRect method. When you have that, and you get the total height of the child, you can scroll to the appropriate child.
In the example below I check whether at least half of the child is visible:

Once you know the first visible position, you should be able to use View.getLocationinWindow() or View.getLocationOnScreen() on the next position's view to get the visible height of the first. Compare that to the View's height, and scroll to the next position if appropriate.
You may need to tweak it to account for padding, depending on what your rows look like.
I haven't tried the above, but it seems like it should work. If it doesn't, here's another, probably less robust idea:
getLastVisiblePosition(). If you take the difference between last and first, you can see how many positions are visible on the screen. Compare that to how many positions were visible when the list was first populated(scroll position 0).
If the same number of positions are visible, simply scroll to the first visible position as you are doing. If there is one more visible, scroll to "first + 1" position.
If you can get the position of the row that needs to be scrolled to, you can use the method:
smoothScrollToPosition
So something like:

I have a problem with my custom ViewGroup. I layout 3 of the children in a row and use a Scroller to scroll to the middle child. Based on the touch input of the user I change the children that should be displayed and request a new layout. Then I layout the children in a new order. But when one child has been displayed in a previous layout run the children lie on top of each other. I checked that the children get layout in the right way and I think the old layout is not deleted and the new children get just drawn on top of the old layout. Is there a way to ensure that the old layout gets cleared or something?

I have a very long activity with a scrollview. It is a form with various fields that the user must fill in. I have a checkbox half way down my form, and when the user checks it I want to scroll to a specific part of the view. Is there any way to scroll to an EditText object (or any other view object) programmatically?
Also, I know this is possible using X and Y coords but I want to avoid doing this as the form may changed from user to user.

In my opinion the best way to scroll to a given rectangle is via View.requestRectangleOnScreen(Rect, Boolean). You should call it on a View you want to scroll to and pass a local rectangle you want to be visible on the screen. The second parameter should be false for smooth scrolling and true for immediate scrolling.

My EditText was nested several layers inside my ScrollView, which itself isn't the layout's root view. Because getTop() and getBottom() were seeming to report the coordinates within it's containing view, I had it compute the distance from the top of the ScrollView to the top of the EditText by iterating through the parents of the EditText.

The above answers will work fine if the ScrollView is the direct parent of the ChildView. If your ChildView is being wrapped in another ViewGroup in the ScrollView, it will cause unexpected behavior because the View.getTop() get the position relative to its parent. In such case, you need to implement this:

I know this may be too late for a better answer but a desired perfect solution must be a system like positioner. I mean, when system makes a positioning for an Editor field it places the field just up to the keyboard, so as UI/UX rules it is perfect.
What below code makes is the Android way positioning smoothly. First of all we keep the current scroll point as a reference point. Second thing is to find the best positioning scroll point for an editor, to do this we scroll to top, and then request the editor fields to make the ScrollView component to do the best positioning. Gatcha! We've learned the best position. Now, what we'll do is scroll smoothly from the previous point to the point we've found newly. If you want you may omit smooth scrolling by using scrollTo instead of smoothScrollTo only.
NOTE: The main container ScrollView is a member field named scrollViewSignup, because my example was a signup screen, as you may figure out a lot.

Examining Android source code, you can find that there already is a member function of ScrollView– scrollToChild(View) – that does exactly what is requested. Unfortunatelly, this function is for some obscure reason marked private. Based on that function I've written following function that finds the first ScrollView above the View specified as a parameter and scrolls it so that it becomes visible within the ScrollView:

The best solution I've got so far is to use a combination of inset callbacks and requestRectangleOnScreen method.

We are setting a callback on a root view to make sure we get called. Insets could be consumed before our view in question received them, so we have to do additional work here.

You can get rid of a focus check. It's there to limit number of calls to requestRectangleOnScreen. I use post to run an action after scrollable parent scheduled scroll to a focused view.

In my Android Layout, I have a TextView. This TextView is displaying a rather large spannable text and it is able to scroll. Now when the phone is rotated, the View is destroyed and created and I have to setText() the TextView again, resetting the scroll position to the beginning.
I know I can use getScrolly() and scrollTo() to scroll to pixel positions, but due to the change in View widths, lines become longer and a line that was at pixel pos 400 might now be at 250. So this is not very helpful.
I need a way to find the first visible line in a TextView in onDestroy() and then a way to make the TextView scroll to this specific piece of text after the rotation.
Any ideas?

I tried to extract only the relevant code from my app, so please forgive any errors. Also note that if you rotate to landscape and back, it may not end in the same position you started. For example, say "Peter" is the first visible word in portrait. When you rotate to landscape, "Peter" is the last word on its line, and the first is "Larry". When you rotate back, "Larry" will be visible.

I want to scroll the a ListView in Android by number of pixels. For example I want to scroll the list 10 pixels down (so that the first item on the list has its top 10 pixel rows hidden).
I thought the obviously visible scrollBy or scrollTo methods on ListView would do the job, but they don't, instead they scroll the whole list wrongly (In fact, the getScrollY always return zero even though I have scrolled the list using my finger.)
What I'm doing is I'm capturing Trackball events and I want to scroll the listview smoothly according to the motion of the trackball.

Here is some code from my ListView subclass. It can easily be adapted so it can be used in Activity code.
getListItemsHeight() returns the total pixel height of the list, and fills an array with vertical pixel offsets of each item. While this information is valid, getListScrollY() returns the current vertical pixel scroll position, and scrollListToY() scrolls the list to pixel position.
If the size or the content of the list changes, getListItemsHeight() has to be called again.
