I thnik you are looking for re-using layout
you can create all your component in one layout and call that using include tag
<include layout="#layout/component"/>
<include layout="#layout/component"/>
<include layout="#layout/component"/>
link here
Even with two different layouts for different rows, you still can use a ListView and use different ViewTypes in the ListAdapter.
An other way would be to have just a container layout in your layout xml (e.g. LinearLayout wrapped in a ScrollView) and add the components programmatically. You could have the layout for the component in a separate layout xml and in code, inflate that layout xml to a View (or ViewGroup), set the texts or whatever and finally add the component view to the container view.
I can provide code examples too, if one of the suggestions makes sense for you.

I have a custom designed button (LinearLayout) that I want to reuse multiple times by just replacing a couple of attributes of the layout's nested views (icon and text).
I understand that using the <include> tag I can only override root view attributes.
I can sure do it programatically in java, but I wonder if there is a smart way to do this in XML.
Essentially, I want to be able to use something like <include> to reuse below shown complex layout and override only the following two nested attributes in two different nested views:
...
android:src="#drawable/google_icon"
...
android:text=" Google"
...
My (not yet) reusable layout:
<LinearLayout
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_marginTop="#dimen/button_vertical_margin"
android:layout_marginBottom="#dimen/button_vertical_margin"
android:gravity="center_horizontal"
android:clickable="true"
android:background="#drawable/default_button_selector">
<LinearLayout
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_marginRight="-2dp"
android:background="#drawable/layout_border"
android:gravity="center">
<ImageView
android:layout_width="#dimen/button_icon_size"
android:layout_height="#dimen/button_icon_size"
android:layout_margin="#dimen/button_icon_margin"
android:src="#drawable/google_icon" />
</LinearLayout>
<LinearLayout
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="match_parent"
android:background="#drawable/layout_border"
android:gravity="center"
android:paddingLeft="#dimen/button_text_horizontal_padding"
android:paddingRight="#dimen/button_text_horizontal_padding">
<TextView
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_marginTop="#dimen/button_text_vertical_margin"
android:layout_marginBottom="#dimen/button_text_vertical_margin"
android:textSize="#dimen/button_text_size"
android:text="Continue with" />
<TextView
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_marginTop="#dimen/button_text_vertical_margin"
android:layout_marginBottom="#dimen/button_text_vertical_margin"
android:text=" Google"
android:textSize="#dimen/button_text_size"
android:textStyle="bold" />
</LinearLayout>
</LinearLayout>
I'm having a little trouble laying out my android app. I didn't plan it out very well, and i'm not new to java, but im new to these android xml layouts. What i have is a horizontal linear layout parent, which contains two relative layouts. The right relative layout consists of a custom view (GridView) and under it i want 3 buttons. I've added one button (button1) to my xml file and it won't show up on screen as you can see. I'm thinking i need to set the size of my gridview some how? Its height is 2x its width. Or can i set it by pixels programatically at runtime?
I'm also thinking i sort of over complicated things at this point. Like i said i'm new to these weird layouts, im used to just using x and y offsets in .net. Maybe this could all be done in one relative layout instead of using two and nesting them inside a linear layout?
Here's what i got so far:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<LinearLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="match_parent"
android:orientation="horizontal" >
<RelativeLayout
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="match_parent" >
<TextView
android:id="#+id/textView1"
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_alignParentLeft="true"
android:layout_alignParentTop="true"
android:text="#string/next" />
<com.mydomain.tetrisv2.PreviewGridView
android:id="#+id/previewGridView1"
android:layout_width="100dp"
android:layout_height="150dp"
android:layout_alignParentLeft="true"
android:layout_below="#+id/textView1" />
<TextView
android:id="#+id/textView2"
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_alignParentLeft="true"
android:layout_below="#+id/previewGridView1"
android:text="Score: " />
</RelativeLayout>
<RelativeLayout
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="match_parent" >
<com.mydomain.tetrisv2.GridView
android:id="#+id/gridView1"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_marginBottom="50dp" />
<Button
android:id="#+id/button1"
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_below="#+id/gridView1"
android:text="Button" />
</RelativeLayout>
</LinearLayout>
I can't post images but heres the visual result: http://i50.tinypic.com/orscgi.png
Also side note (unrelated), this is a project for experimentation and learning purposes but are there any legal copyright repercussions to making a tetris game and putting it on the play store?
Just change our right sides gridview's below button to this code
<Button
android:id="#+id/button1"
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_alignParentBottom="true" // change is here
android:text="Button" />
Hope this will help you..
In a layout resource XML, I have 3 RelativeLayout(s) which are inside a main RelativeLayout. The view will be shown vertically. These 3 RelativeLayout() are set next to each other, and I want them to fill the whole screen, doesnt matter what will be the screen size. My, layout view:
<RelativeLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
xmlns:tools="http://schemas.android.com/tools"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="match_parent"
android:background="#drawable/backg"
>
<ImageView
android:id="#+id/imageView1"
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_alignParentLeft="true"
android:layout_alignParentTop="true"
android:layout_marginTop="#dimen/top_mr_image"
android:src="#drawable/temp" />
<RelativeLayout
android:id="#+id/r1"
android:layout_width="0dp"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_alignParentBottom="true"
android:layout_alignParentLeft="true"
android:layout_below="#+id/imageView1"
android:layout_marginLeft="10dp"
android:background="#drawable/r1bg"
android:layout_weight="1"
>
<TextView
android:id="#+id/textView1"
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_alignParentLeft="true"
android:layout_marginLeft="#dimen/txt_mr_right"
android:layout_marginRight="#dimen/txt_mr_right"
android:layout_marginTop="39dp"
android:text="S"
android:textAppearance="?android:attr/textAppearanceLarge" />
<TextView
android:id="#+id/textView2"
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_alignParentLeft="true"
android:layout_below="#id/textView1"
android:layout_marginLeft="#dimen/txt_mr_right"
android:layout_marginRight="#dimen/txt_mr_right"
android:text="T"
android:textAppearance="?android:attr/textAppearanceLarge" />
</RelativeLayout>
<RelativeLayout
android:id="#+id/r2"
android:layout_width="0dp"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_alignParentBottom="true"
android:layout_alignTop="#+id/r1"
android:layout_toRightOf="#+id/r1"
android:layout_weight="1" >
</RelativeLayout>
<RelativeLayout
android:id="#+id/r3"
android:layout_width="0dp"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_alignParentBottom="true"
android:layout_alignTop="#+id/r2"
android:layout_toRightOf="#+id/r2"
android:layout_weight="1" >
</RelativeLayout>
I set weight=1 and layout_width=0dp for each relativeLayout and this technique works with buttons, I thought the same will be with relativeLayout, seems my thoughts were wrong. Any idea?
UPD1: I have added an image of what I would like to have
RelativeLayout does not pay attention to android:layout_weight. (That's a property of LinearLayout.LayoutParams, but not of RelativeLayout.LayoutParams.)
You should be able to get the layout you want with a much simpler view hierarchy. It's not clear what you are trying to do, since the last two RelativeLayouts are empty. If you need a purely vertical organization, I'd suggest using LinearLayout instead of RelativeLayout.
EDIT Based on your edit, it looks like you want a horizontal layout of three compound views, each one clickable. I think something like the following will work:
<LinearLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
android:orientation="horizontal"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="match_parent"
>
<!-- First column -->
<LinearLayout
android:id="#+id/firstColumn"
android:orientation="vertical"
android:gravity="center_horizontal"
android:layout_width="0dp"
android:layout_height="match_parent"
android:layout_weight="1"
>
<ImageView
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:src="..." />
<TextView
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="match_parent"
android:text="text 1"
. . . />
</LinearLayout>
<!-- Second column -->
<LinearLayout . . . >
. . .
</LinearLayout>
</LinearLayout>
If the contents of the buttons aren't correct, you can replace the second-level LinearLayout views with RelativeLayout if that helps organize the layout better.
RelativeLayouts do not support weight. You need to use a LinearLayout as a parent container if you want to use weights.
Solution is very simple. I have been looking for weight distribution in relative layout.
It's a small trick for all these kind situations.
Use LinearLayout with android:orientation="horizontal"
You can use Horizontally oriented LinearLayout Manager in the Recycler View, and place each RelativeLayout in each item, of its Adapter.
The Link: How to build a Horizontal ListView with RecyclerView?
If your RelativeLayouts are set to a fixed width and height, that is to the size of the Screen, that you can get from DisplayMatrics, that will be OK.
The Link: Get Screen width and height
If the contents of your RelativeLayouts are different, then you can use getItemViewType() method.
Please see: How to create RecyclerView with multiple view type?
Happy Coding :-)
I'm trying to set my TextView to the left of an ImageButton, but I can't seems to find this option.
I was expecting to use something like android:layout_alignLeft, but this option is missing.
I've tried to google the issue, but couldn't find any relative results.
Without it my TextView overlaps the ImageButton and I want to avoid it.
UPDATE
The full xml code is too complex, but here is the important part of it:
<FrameLayout
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_alignParentLeft="true"
android:background="#color/white"
android:layout_marginLeft="8dp"
android:layout_marginTop="8dp"
android:layout_marginBottom="8dp"
android:layout_toLeftOf="#+id/frameLayoutBalanceClosed">
<ImageButton
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:src="#drawable/button_edit_nickname"
android:id="#+id/card_closed_control_editNickname" />
<TextView
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:id="#+id/card_closed_description_nickname"
android:layout_margin="8dp" android:layout_gravity="left"/>
</FrameLayout>
I think what you need is a RelativeLayout. You can specify your TextView to the left of your ImageView with it's specifications. Your code would look something like this:
<RelativeLayout
android:layout_width="fill_parent"
android:layout_height="fill_parent" >
<TextView
android:id="#+id/text"
android:layout_width="fill_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_toLeftOf="#+id/imagebutton1" />
<ImageButton
android:id="#+id/imagebutton1"
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content" />
</RelativeLayout>
The reason FrameLayout isn't working is because it's purpose is to overlay items on top of each other, which wouldn't work at all!
If that isn't what you're looking for, you could also use a TableLayout in which items are arranged in columns.
How do I design an android application with two buttons next to each other (horizontal) and below these buttons i have a textview (vertical) using LinearLayout? Can't get it to work.
<LinearLayout android:layout_width="fill_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content" android:orientation="horizontal">
<Button android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content" />
<Button android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content" />
</LinearLayout>
<TextView android:layout_width="fill_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content" />
Far better to use the RelativeLayout in this case. You just described your desired result in terms of the items of your view relative to one another. It is simpler to use than you might think.
