Can't set multiple controls in one line with RelativeLayout

I'm new in the world of Android development, and I'm trying to learn how to getting started from here.
Now I've followed all steps until to put the Zip Code and the Number on the same line. I don't understand how can I manage this, if I drag and drop the Number control beside the TextView the IDE put the Number above the control or to the bottom. I don't know how to explain correctly, anyway, this is an image:

You should make proper use of LinearLayout, RelativeLayout, FrameLayout and TableLayout for the desired alignments.

What you were doing Wrong :
You are trying to align EditText and TextView one beside another inside RelativeLayout but you've closed the relative layiut right where it started.
that makes the EditText and TextView the child view of the LinearLayout(Vertical)
As the text views are behaving as the children of Linear vertical layout there is no use of RelativeLayout hence aligning both views one below another.
One more thing when you fix that and put both the text view within RelativeLayout you have to align one view in relation with the another.
In this case:
android:layout_toRightOf="#+id/ZipCodeEdit"

You are using a vertical LinearLayout as the parent layout.

You can also remove the RelativeLayout as it's not really being used(nothing inside it).

Android Relative/LinearLayout always in middle, no matter if horizontal or vertical

This image http://postimg.org/image/h8akuq9gz/ should give you an idea of what I want.
No matter if the device is in vertical or horizontal position, this two "circles" must be always in the mid.
I really don't know how can I achieve this. Can you point me the direction? Thanks!

why not use gravity on root layout, like:

How to center a textview inside a linearlayout

I have the following layout i'd like to make the textview appear in the center and middle of the view. How can i acheive this?
I've tried adjusting the various gravity attributes when looking at the layout in graphical view, but nothing seems to change it. I'd like the textview in the center which i've done but halfway down the view.

None of the other answers worked for me. I had to use android:textAlignment="center"

If in linearlayout your orientation vertical, you can put the textview in the "horizontal center" by android:layout_gravity="center". For centering textview vertically you need to set layout_height of textview to match_parent and set android:gravity to "center". If you want to use more than one view in this layout, you should use RelativeLayout and set
android:layout_centerInParent="true".

Android layout_gravity

I can't understand why the following code places my TextView in the top left corner of my screen. Based on my understanding of layout_gravity, it seems that it should place my TextView at the bottom of my screen instead.
Can anyone please shed some light on this for me? This Linear Layout, despite seeming very simplistic, has caused me numerous headaches. How can something that seems so simple, be such a royal pain to grasp?

A LinearLayout set to vertical orientation will ignore all layout_gravity parameters that refers to vertical alignment. So for example "bottom" wont work but "center-horizontal" will work. (The vertical alignment is always done so that each view in the layout i placed under the other views in the layout.)
A relative layout might be the way to go or maybe you can use this code that probably is pretty close to what you want.

If that is the simplicity of your layout, you shouldn't wrap it in a LinearLayout at all.

android:gravity controls the appearance within the TextView. So if you had two lines of text they would be centered within the bounds of the TextView. Try android:layout_centerHorizontal="true".
