So I have a navigation drawer that handles my fragments. In those fragments I want to implement tabbed navigation. I have searched high and low to find out if this is possible. But I cannot find if it si. From looking at things I don't think it is as the tabbed fragment implementation requires a FragmentActivity and my navigation drawer cannot use FragmentActivitys.
NavDrawers can inflate classes that extend Fragment but not FragmentActivity, which is why I'm thinking this is unachievable. The swipe views on the android developers documentation (http://developer.android.com/training/implementing-navigation/lateral.html) here is why I'm not convinced I can do this. Unless there is a different way to implement navdrawers than that of what I'm doing.
But I also know that Gmail implements something similar. They have a NavDrawer implementation with a feature of tabbed navigation -- you can swipe between emails. Which gives me some hope...
Any direction would be awesome.

I get different errors depending on the changes I make.
Like it is right now, I get
java.lang.NullPointerException: Attempt to invoke virtual method 'void android.app.ActionBar.setTitle(java.lang.CharSequence)' on a null object reference
ActionBarActivity is deprecated so I'm not going to use it but if I change Activity to AppCompatActivity, I get
java.lang.IllegalArgumentException: AppCompat does not support the current theme features
What am I doing wrong? Which is better to use: Activity, ActionBarActivity or AppCompatActivity? Thanks in advance
Thanks to Raghunandan I managed to fix this: I changed the Activity to AppCompatActivity and replaced getActionBar for getSupportActionBar. I don't have any more NPE

Problem: my compiler was not showing that these android:attr/* are not supported in API level 10. I found a solution.
To support lower versions, instead of removing the following three parameters,
android:textAppearance="?android:attr/textAppearanceListItemSmall"
android:background="?android:attr/activatedBackgroundIndicator"
android:minHeight="?android:attr/listPreferredItemHeightSmall"
You can actually replace them with equivalent values/resources.
The equivalent values can be obtained from https://github.com/android/platform_frameworks_base/blob/master/core/res/res/values/themes.xml
Now,
a) android:textAppearance="#android:style/TextAppearance.Medium"
b) Download a selector from https://github.com/habzy/Test0011_DialerPad/blob/master/res/drawable/list_item_activated_background.xml
In the above project browse the resources in hdpi,mdpi etc and get files named list_activated_holo.9.png

I have been trying to understand how to make an app using a navigation drawer to change fragments. Instead of creating an empty project I created one with the pre-made navigation drawer to maybe try and get a better idea of how it works, so I can develope my app with one.
My problem is I can not figure out where the fragments get changed when something is selected in the navigation drawer. It seems that it is just changing text in the one fragment when an item is selected. What I want to do is make my own list of items for the navigation drawer and each one loads a different fragment...

mDrawerListView's onItemClickListener causes the Fragment transaction in the first block of code I have indicated. Initally, mCurrentSelectedPosition is 0, and hence the last line of code I pasted (all from your example) causes the first PlaceHolderFragment to be displayed.
Be patient, and read the documentation carefully, again and again. Try out samples. There's no easy easy to grasp how this works.

and of course i change minSdk to 8 but it still doesn't work.
First you need to extend ActionBarActivity instead of FragmentActivity
Second change your App Theme to #style/Theme.AppCompat or #style/Theme.AppCompat.Light
Third change every call to getActionBar() for getSupportActionBar() and invalidateOptionsMenu() for supportInvalidateOptionsMenu()
That should do, here is the google example using AppCompat-v7 i did to test it, I also used a custom adapter for the listview just ignore that :)

all you have to do is just import the v4 support library in your project and you can just follow the example in the docs that you linked.
its the same thing for any version of android 2.2 and up, just substitute any fragment use with support fragment usage from the library
What makes you think it only works on API 14+? If it's the minSDKVersion in the Manifest in the downloadable example, I guess that's just to have the Holo Theme they use.
Just change minSDKVersion to 8 or so and fix what needs fixing to match it. The NavigationDrawer itself should work with SDKVersions down to 4 as it's in the v4 version of the support library.
