This morning I have been experiencing an issue with Android Studio, whenever I open it I am getting the following error.
I have tried removing Android Studio and getting a clean install. Removing all the preference folders. Removing and re-downloading my project's repository. Creating a new project. All of these still end with this error showing up. No mater how high I increase the memory it is still getting this issue.
I have checked the Activity Monitor and it is actually only using 524mb of memory. Does anyone have any suggestions?
The next thing I'm going to try is using an older version of Android studios. Apart from that I'm not sure what else to do beside a clean install of the OS and hope for the best.
UPDATE:
Couldn't work out a way of fixing this, and had to perform a clean reinstall of OSX.
I was fighting with this problem today for a few hours and ended up trying File -> Invalidate Caches / Restart... and chose the Invalidate/Restart option. Seems to have fixed the Out of Memory error.
Don't know if that will work for you at a later time, but hopefully it helps.
Go to /Applications and do right click on Android Studio > show package contents
Then go to /Contents/bin/studio.vmoptions and change it like this:
-Xms128m
-Xmx800m
-XX:MaxPermSize=350m
-XX:ReservedCodeCacheSize=96m
-XX:+UseCompressedOops
There are couple of ways to handle out of memory in Android Studio:
Clean the Project And Rebuild
Invalidate Caches/Restart -> Sync Project with Gradle files
Restart the PC
Close Android Studio -> Delete .idea folder -> Start the Android
Studio and rebuild.
Still facing the issue, Need proper investigation.
This may be a simple error in your code that Android Studio does not know how to resolve.
Example problem: In my case, within my activity's onCreate function, I wrote binding.root.also{ } and deleted the opening curly bracket of the also scope function. This caused Android Studio to run out of memory and freeze.
Solution: I deleted the also function within Notepad and there were no problems afterwards.
This happened to me when I entered /* to begin commenting out a few lines. And it happened before I could add the */ to close the comment section. Therefore, the entire second half of the file (and beyond) was being commented out. I could not go back to add the needed */ to close the comment, because the "Out of Memory" window kept popping back up before I could do so.
So I closed Android Studio,
opened the same .java file in NotePad,
added the needed * / a few lines below the /*,
saved the file with NotePad,
then reopened it again in Android Studio.
The Out of Memory problem was gone for good.
I also got the same problem in my case, I tried to dump memory and it is reached to 200mb and while opening the studio it is showing the continuous process, because of '.hprof' the file is loading. Finally, I removed the '.hprof' and able to run my project. The .'hprof' file removed from the directory ''
I had the same error recently (Android studio 3) even though I had 16gb Ram + I7700K CPU.
I noticed that it started to appear after I disabled the Virtual Memory Ram because I needed some extra space in my SSD. so I just reactivated it and the problem was solved!

When I open layout file in my new Android-Studio file and press preview tab it'll show a message Waiting for build to finish... for infinite time.
Has anyone faced the same issue or any solution?
Cleaning and rebuilding my project solved the issue.
try different theme (may be from Appcompat) and API level from top
OR
If you have made some changes in the layout just undo it.
delete .idea and .gradle folder from root of the project
close android studio , restart it
click on gradle icon from right sidebar and click sync icon to refresh project.
now rebuild the project and it should work.
After a lot searching and I tried all solution which people give here, but any of them didn't solve my problem, I guess this problem is from studio's developers, and they may fix it in next patch.
so I simply re-installed my android studio and it's solved.
Try Clean and rebuild project.and Also try Invalidate caches/Restart.And this issue is also facing because of Low Ram in laptops.
After upgrading to Android Studio version 3.1, in the Project Structure dialog the build tools version was empty. Selecting a build tools version solved the problem for me.
Hope it helps for someone facing the same issue.
See my response on similar question posted:
Android studio error java.lang.IllegalArgumentException: Resource name cannot be empty
This error can occur when you update to Android Studio 3.0. It doesn't affect your ability to build a project, but the error does not allow you to visually see your xml layout files. You will also get the error when committing files to GIT, but you can still commit and push.
What I found in one of my projects is that a file was added to the "menu" folder automatically upon Android Studio upgrade, and the file had no name. It was named simply ".xml". All you need to do is delete the file and clean your project, allowing a new build of the project. That should take care of the issue.
For me I had this problem with one file, so I simply created a new one with the same code.
Simply make a build from within AS - not the command line. I get this all the time because I'm mostly using the command line. It's been like this since early versions of AS so I recon it's not high on there list of issues.
Lately (3.2) there is a lot of new internal crashes and what not - not stable at all š¤
my project was working well but suddenly when I ran it on my phone, Android Studio freezes and I should stop it from task manager.
before this happens I installed "Geny motion" & "Virtual Box", but when the error occurred I uninstalled them. but the problem insisted.
Solutions I've tried
I uninstalled it and installed it again
I unplugged and plugged in my device
I disabled android indexing from setting
None of the above solutions worked.
I had today this exact problem. None of the above helped me until I found simple solution here
Just run File -> Invalidate Cache and Restart
That simple and it works!!!
Delete all Android Studio data - .gradle .android .androidstudio folders from your home folder. And all project build folders gradle and iml files.
This worked for me.
1.Close the project
2.Remove the project
3.Close Android Studio
4.Open it again
5.Open the project
Enjoy Coding!
I checked my java file and I saw somehow all the code in one of my java files was replaced with "NULL NULL NULL NULL....."
I deleted the file and the application runs without a problem.
Android Studio (3.1.3) froze on me while editing a source file. I waited and finally killed the process in Task Manager (Windows). Twice I tried to start up again and both times it got stuck with the "indexing..." message in the lower right. Both times I ended the process in Task Manager.
I looked in the source folder of the project I was working on. The source file I had been editing when it froze was "Receipt.java". There was another file in the src folder "Receipt.java__jb_tmp__". I deleted that file and Android Studio started up fine. It looks like I lost some edits, though.
When I did start up, it detected there had been some error and offered to submit a report.
If the project is large & has a lot of modules, you might need to increase the Allocated Heap Size for Android Studio.
Go to Edit Custom VM Options from Help menu and increase the value for -Xms and -Xmx
This is what I'm using
-Xms2048m
-Xmx8192m
-XX:MaxPermSize=2048m
-XX:ReservedCodeCacheSize=1024m
-XX:+UseCompressedOops
In my case color was declared as invalid, Android Studio ignored that and during building it froze. I had to remove the file, let it index, paste it back and fix the color string (it gave me error when I entered the pasted file)
just rename project folder then open IDE, it will show
now rename back to origin folder name, click open project
it work on my case
I have older project with sdk version 22, when I open it in android studio 3.1.2 on macOS. It keep indexing forever, everything was installed and configured properly but indexing loop never stopped.
Following worked for me
File > Invalidate caches/restartā¦ > Invalidate caches/restart
Go to the File menu and click the option Invalidate Caches / Restart This will solve the problem ! Enjoy ;)
My laptop crashed while Android Studio was running.
Now, When I tried to open project in Android Studio it gives me weird error and no project is opening.
Cannot load project: java.lang.RuntimeException: java.io.IOException: java.lang.AssertionError: Unexpected content storage modification"**
Edit: Also I'm in the welcome screen of Android Studio and have no access to Menu options to Invalidate Caches and restart Android Studio.
I had really big issue as I was not able to open project in Android Studio. Every time I start Android Studio dialog box appear that says:
Cannot load project: java.lang.RuntimeException: java.io.IOException: java.lang.AssertionError: Unexpected content storage modification
I solved it by doing following steps:
Close Android Studio
Go to the directory home_dir/.AndroidStudio/system/cache
Remove all the files in the cache directory.
Then restart IntelliJ
No guarantee this will work, but I have previously fixed a problem which is similar to this by invalidating the cache.
In Android Studio this is under File -> Invalidate Caches / Restart
For Android Studio 2.O follow these steps:
Close Android studio
Go to ~/.android/cache
Delete content
Restart android studio
Hope this will help
In C\users\.Androidstudio delete gradle.jar and try
Backup the jar before proceeding.
I got the same issue and this is related to IDE .
Android Studio has to do a fix.
I found the same issue but I found a fix, and all it took was renaming/deleting the .AndroidStudio hidden folder in Windows, under your home directory.
C:\Users\YOURUSERNAME.AndroidStudio
I renamed mine and I'm back up and running.
I could solve this issue in android studio by selecting File-> Invalidate caches/Restart .
Start Android Studio, close any open project.
On the right side, click on Configure -> Settings.
On the left side, in Compiler->Gradle set VM Options to -Xmx512m
Press OK, then create a project. Worked for me.
also because of that
It turns out it's a Windows 8 issue with the available virtual memory. It seems like a few new processes (like Superfetch) eat up a ton of processing power to constantly scan your drive for changes, so searching is faster.
The solution is to change the min and max virtual memory values. Here's how to do that:
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/change-virtual-memory-size#1TC=windows-7
I am developing an Android App in which I use lot of JNI Code.. Recently (from last 2-3 days I am really annoyed by surprise behavior of eclipse) it shows me vague errors as soon as I open my .c file... However errors disappear if I close and reopen the project. See the secreen shot attached. Is it because I just update my eclipse installation (just update of eclipse plugins, I am still on my old Indigo)...
Is it an eclibse bug or something wrong with my setup ?
Solved ????
I tried everything but noting could change the behavior of eclipse.. By this time I knew that I have certainly messed with the project Settings by mistake, since eclipse was behaving well in other projects of same workspace. So I recreated the project manually and finally that solved myproblem...Though the Question is still open for valuable answers I think soon I will get some good answers..
UPDATE
Even eclipse 4.2 release also has this problem.. #frustrating
I found that deleting the project and than reimporting the project to workspace solves the problem. However I also came to knew that deleting .cproject file from the project tree can also fix this problem. Fixing the NDK path (Window -> Preferences -> Android-> NDK) in Eclipse preferences may also solve the problem.
Solution 2 Which may work in few cases...
Right click on the project.
Select Android Tools -> Fix Project Properties
When I try to run my Android project(which was working fine yesterday) I get the "Your project contains errors, please fix them before running your application" dialog. But my project has no errors. I've had this problem before, and the solution was always to Clean the project, but this time it isn't helping. The red X icon disappears from the project in the workspace, then reappears when I try to run it. Also restarted Eclipse so it rebuilds the project. Help?
Go to your .android folder and delete your debug certificate. In my computer it is in this path
E:\Users\blessan\.android
Inside that there is a file name 'debug.keystore'. Delete that, clean and try to build the project again. Sometimes this error is caused when the certificate expires.
There are a couple of reasons as to why this might happen. Give these problems / solutions a try.
Problem with your Manifest. These don't always show up, so give your Manifest a thorough check.
Suddenly missing / moved libraries or other dependencies. Right click your project, choose Properties and check the tabs under Java Build Path. When you accidentally remove / move a library file, or any other file the app is dependent on, it can cause an error like this without showing up as an actual error. However in the Build Path screen it will show with a little error sign.
Problems with your R.java. I had an issue with this before where there was a corrupt value in the R.java file. "cleaning" the project didn't fix it, but forcing Eclipse to rebuild the file due to me erasing it manually did.
Problem with a cached version of your app. This one is a real pain cause there are no pointers for it, but sometimes for some reason Eclipse decides to mess with a cached version of your app. This can cause anything from apps not working to apps showing images that have long been replaced by other ones or have been deleted entirely.
If the other fixes don't work, try navigating to your project folder and removing the /bin folder. After that, rebuild the project and try to run it.
I hope one of these works out for you.
This problem is occur some time when you replace new debug.keystore file with the old one.
delete deug.keystore may fix the problem
