Migrate project to gradle error - android

I had created a project with Android Studio and pushed it to bitbucket. After few weeks now I have cloned it on different machine to resume my work. I imported the project in Android Studio and now I keep getting this error.
Migrate Project to Gradle?
This project does not use the Gradle build system. We recommend that you migrate to using the Gradle build system.
More Information about migrating to Gradle.
Don't show this message again.
I have the gradle directory in my project. I tried using the option of use local gradle distribution and pointed it to downloaded gradle-1.10 but I still keep getting the same error.

First of all I would remove following files/directories from your project-folder:
bin/
build/
.idea/
.gradle/
projectname.iml
Then try to import the project again in AndroidStudio. This usually works for me, and to avoid that in the future, adjust the .gitignore file properly.
If the first tip does not help: have you tried downloading a more recent gradle (1.12) locally and point to that directory? (Don't point AndroidStudio to download, but do it yourself first).
You are not using a gradle-wrapper are you?

If you haven't started coding in your new machine, the simplest way would be to just delete your project directory, and use "import from VCS".
Not worth the time to find the "solution", trust me. I tried. Almost 2 years since you asked the question, and people are still getting the issue, then this problem is obviously not worth solving.

Most probably you have git checkout a parent directory of a working android project.
Close freshly checked git project
Open Project
Navigate to the git checkout directory
Select a sub directory inside the git checkout project and that is the intended android project for you

I ran into the same problem. For me the problem was my sttings.gradle was cleared. After adding incude: 'modulename'. It worked for me

I fixed this issue with the following steps:
Make sure that the following two files are in your project directory. If not, create a new one with reference of your other Android projects. These are default auto-generated files.
settings.gradle
build.gradle
If it is still showing any errors when you open your project, restart your project by selecting file/(invalidate /restart).

I had the same problem and I managed to fix it by invalidating caching and restart File - > Invalidate caches and restart

How can a valid (Project) build.gradle not show in 'Android' view?

In Android Studio 3.0.1 Project window I select Android then expand Gradle Scripts
Normally the top of the list shows build.gradle(Project:XXXX).
It does not appear, but choosing Project window Project Files confirms it's existance.
I have laboriously compared this project's home directory to that of a 'good' project but nothing stood out.
The project was created from a recently forked repo via
File > New > Project from Version Control > GitHub
The project builds correctly, honoring my changes to the project build.gradle.
This question may have been asked elsewhere but remains unanswered, so I am re-asking it with additional information!
Any insights or new avenues to explore would be appreciated.
Update
I have removed Versioning for this project and the problem persists. Have removed GitHub tag for this question.
For me this worked fine.
1. Close the project using Close project option.
2. Import the project newly from android studio.
You can delete .gradle and .idea folders in your project manually and reload your project, it helped me.
I eventually circumvented this bug by simply renaming the project folder!
Re-creating the problem has proved impossible, but I strongly suspect a synchronisation problem in an obscure little file called project.dat.
Please refer to the answer I gave to the aforementioned question here!

App module disappeared in android studio

I had app module running on my android studio project until I pressed delete by mistake. I am now unable to run my project as it doesn't detect app module.
I can see app folder in project view (containing build, libs, src folders) but I don't see it in android view or configuration setting where it says
I have an old apk file of the project.
I shared my project on github.
Please help me get my module back so that I can run my project.
All I had to do was File->Sync project with gradle files.
In order to not risk and further modify your content, try and clone again your android repo elsewhere and see if your module shows up there.
If it does, copy it back in your current repo.
I had this same issue, twice now. The first time, a full clean/rebuild did the trick. The second time, this didn't work. What did resolve the problem was opening the settings.gradle file and copying everything, then removing it to leave an empty file. Then save and resync Gradle. This failed, but then I pasted the old contents back into the file and did a resync again, which then fixed the issue.
Not sure what the problem was in the first place, but this worked for me so I figured I'd share.

Each module has to have a unique path

I have imported a project from version control using GIT. After importing, syncing and all that, it gave me this error:
Error:The modules 'LinkedCraftMobile', 'linkedcraft_android' point to same directory in the file system.
Each module has to have a unique path.
I wanted to have a module that can be updated directly with GIT using Android Studio.
2016: It could be because of a .gitmodules including two entries with the same paths, but square/assertj-android issues 174 points out to another file:
This usually is the result of old iml files. Delete them all and re-import.
Weird, removing the .iml and reimporting worked.
Update 2020: as commented by ArashYounesi in issue 174, Android Studio V4.0 seems to resolve the problem.
The best way to fix the .iml files (by recreating them) is to do this:
Close the project in Android Studio
In Android Studio, New > Import Project
That fixed it for me, and it was a lot easier than the other stuff I tried (and a lot less complex).
I believe that rewrites the .iml files with you do that.
What did I try? I tried Build > clean/rebuild project, File > Invalidate caches/restart, and Sync Project with Gradle Files. I was going to manually erase my .iml files but then I found out about this solution and it worked.
The best way to fix this problem is:
Go to Tools-> Android -> Sync Project with Gradle Files
That works for me.
This is because of .iml file conflict, For fixing the issue you just need to clean the project and rebuild.
None of the above answers helped me.
So i Updated my android studio and it solved (Now i have android studio V4.0)
In my project settings.gradle, there's a "rootProject.name" attribute assigned, but it does't equals with my project name.I modified this attribute with my project name, then the error message dismissed.
Using the latest Android Studio solved it. I upgraded to Android Studio v4.0.1
I have same issue , and i tried
bulid >clean / rebulid and Tools > Androdi > sync project with gradle filebut it doesn't works for me.
and then I tried File >Invalidate Caches / Restart ...and it is works for me .

android studio gradle refresh failed (The system cannot find the file specified)

Error:Could not open initscript class cache for initialization script

UPDATE:
Check my answer here for full details
I have the latest version of Android Studio and I faced that problem, the only thing that worked for me is to:
1-Navigate to C:\Users\user.gradle\caches\2.4\
2-Copy the folder "scripts" and paste it somewhere safe just in case anything went wrong you will place it back
3-Delete this folder "scripts" from the directory C:\Users\user.gradle\caches\2.4\
4- Sync Project with Gradle Files and you are done.
When you sync your project Android Studio will generate new cash files.
It worked for me I hope it will work for you...
I don't know why a great developer as Google can't manage this issue by them selves it is very easy to delete the cached folder and regenerate it programmatically. Any way just navigate to C:\Users\user.gradle\caches\ and open the latest version folder, then delete the scripts folder. Go to android studio and sync project, that should do it.
Exit Android Studio, remove the Gradle cache folder which path is in the error message, and restart.
You could try to delete this : C:\Users_USER_.gradle\caches_GRADLE_\scripts_XXX_\InitScript\initscript\cache.properties.lock
I had the same problem and after deleting it all works fine.
Another common problem with Gradle is synchronization which is solved adding the correct path of JDK but this is another story.
I hope to help.

Android Studio Gradle Already disposed Module

I have installed Android Studio version 1.0.1. I have imported my projects from eclipse and it works fine.
Then I deleted a module and reimported it into my Android Studio project. The gradle build says "BUILD SUCCESSFUL" but it pops up an alert window with the message
Failed to complete Gradle execution.
Cause:
Already disposed: Module: 'MYMODULENAME'
I can't start my app now. Any idea what I can do?
Edit:
I solved the problem with the following instructions:
Switch project view from Android to Project
Remove entry include 'MYMODULENAME' in settings.gradle
The blue box in the module symbol don't show. Then you can delete the module in the context menu
Import the module
Note: this is purely an IDEA/AS issue, gradlew clean | Build > Clean | Build > Rebuild will just waste your time.
Most of the solutions here are blind stabbings in the dark. Here's what I found to be the root cause:
Some of the .iml files may be missing (maybe because we deleted it),
check if the module erroring has .iml.
If it is missing, check if .idea/modules.xml has an entry for that module
While syncing I noticed that IDEA/AS tries to put a new duplicate entry into .idea/modules.xml while there's already one. This duplicate entry is probably disposed of twice while the sync tries to reset the modules in memory.
Quick Solution: In order to make it work the easiest is to delete .idea/modules.xml along with the .iml files. Additionally may worth deleting .idea/modules/ folder if it exists. Restart Android Studio (no need to clear cache) and force a Gradle sync from Gradle view or toolbar to recreate the files.
I figured out this problem by:
./gradlew clean
Restart Android Studio
Simplest solution. (Try this first).
Quit and Restart Android studio. (Quit not close)
Build > Clean your project if needed.
works for me:
File -> Invalidate Caches / Restart... -> Invalidate and Restart
Sometimes gradlew clean or Invalidate Cache and Restart does not help, because these methods do not clean Android Studio specific files by themselves.
In this case, close AS and remove .idea directory and .iml file in a root project where settings.gradle file exists. This will make AS rebuild from the fresh ground.
For me this happened when i deleted a module and built a new one with the same package name
Solution:
Clean & Restart Studio
In the left pane, change to "Project" view.
Delete MYMODULENAME.iml
For an alternative solution, check if you added your app to settings.gradle successfully
include ':app'
For me this happened when I removed a module and tried to build the project:
Simple solution was to Invalidate the cache & Restart.
Android Studio>File>Invalidate Caches>Invalidate & Restart
Had a similar issue when working with RN components in my Android project and the only way to get around this issue was to ignore the gradle project.
To do this:
Click on the gradle tab on the right hand side of AS
Right click the gradle module which is causing an issue
Click "Ignore Gradle Project"
Perform a gradle sync which should be successful now
If you need this module perform the 4 above steps again, this time when right click on the gradle project it'll show "Unignore Gradle Project"
Gradle sync should now work
No idea what causes this but I've had this happen to me when using React Native Maps.
Note: If you're still having issues following this. Try to refresh the gradle project which was causing issues.
If gradle clean and/or Build -> Clean Project didn't help try to re-open the project:
Close the project
Click "Open an existing Android Studio project" on the "Welcome to Android Studio" screen
Select gradle file to open
Warning Be aware it's a destructive operation - you're going to loose the project bookmarks, breakpoints and shelves
below solution works for me
Delete all .iml files
Rebuild project
For Solve this issue take it this simple steps.
Find the .idea folder in your Android studio under the Folder Project.
In .idea --> Find this one. .idea/.modules
Simple Delete that .modules folder and restart Your studio.
when it reopens gradle sync Automatically and also recreate .modules folder and files.
Error has gone !
I also face this problem sometimes. Click on gradle console in bottom bar of android studio, at right side. It will show the exact error in logs. My problem was that I had compile SDK 22 and imported appcomact library was of sdk 23.
I had the same problem,
after delete some gradle files (of aws)
i solved it by mark them "ignore gradle"
I believe it is not the best answer but it solve it for me
Gradle (at the right bar)--> right click on the problematic gradle --> ignore
Although the accepted answer didn't work for me (unfortunately I can't leave a comment), it led me in the right direction.
in .idea/libraries i found that there were some duplicate xml files (the duplicates were named with a 2 before the _aar.xml bit).
deleting those, restarting android studio and sync fixed the error
I was having this issue because gradle and Android Studio were using a different path for the jvm. In the Event Log there was an option for AS and gradle to use the same path. Selecting this and then doing an invalidate cache & restart resolved the issue for me.
In my case, same as in this question, it happened because I had my project in a symbolic link directory. After reopening the project in the real directory and reconfiguring gradle (File -> Sync with Gradle files) the problem went away. Shame on you, Android Studio!
