I have a problem. I was trying to create an app, but I get an error and I really have no idea how to fix it. It gives a red cross before EditText, and I think it has to do with how everything is opened/closed, but I just can't find a problem.
<LinearLayout
xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
xmlns:tools="http://schemas.android.com/tools"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="match_parent"
android:orientation="horizontal"
<EditText
android:id="#+id/edit_message"
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:hint="#string/edit_message" />
<Button
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:text="#string/button_send" />
/>
Would like to hear from you.
this is your problem
you left the > closing sign on your linear layout.
this is the right way
<LinearLayout
xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
xmlns:tools="http://schemas.android.com/tools"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="match_parent"
android:orientation="horizontal" >
<!--items go here -->
</LinearLayout>
LinearLayout should have an open and close tag:
<LinearLayout
attributes here...>
....stuf there...
</LinearLayout>

Hello I am starting with Android developing. I am just modifying with ECLIPSE an open source example. I have only modified strings.xml and some .png files. In the Android simulator it works perfect but when I try to generate the signed apk file I receive two errors with similar description. This is one of them (the line is marking with *):

Any help will be apreciated. Thank you very much!!
The line
android:layout_below="#+id/about_us_desc_webview"
in your TextView is redundant. Since the RelativeLayout already has that attribute, it is useless. You can just erase that line and nothing should change.
And the reason it generates error is that, you can apply features such as below, above.. etc with an element in the same layout. Here "about_us_desc_webview" is out of the RelativeLayout and you cannot position something inside a RelativeLayout with something outside a RelativeLayout.
android:layout_below
Positions the top edge of this view below the given anchor view ID .
When Arise

In my case, The problem was with Kotlin Version. I updated the the Kotlin version and the problem "is not a sibling in the same RelativeLayout" resolved
Just remove the lines which are causing error from layout
.xml file
Try refreshing the layout
Your layout will probably change. You can now reset it properly.
If you go to Properties Panel you will see layout:alignComponent has some alignment shown as "Not Found". Just clear it out. In the above example Properties window -> textview -> layout:alignComponent check all alignment values.
I am working on a project and I have run into some problems. I haven't worked with the layouts very much so I don't know if this is possible or not.
In the picture I have added the project mock-up. For the lower screen resolution it looks fine, but when I put the app on 5 inch device, this orange area is too high and I wanted to know if it is possible somehow to get that area centered.
The orange area is a LinearLayout and everything is wrapped inside LinearLayout. Hope you understand what I mean I what I am asking.
<LinearLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="match_parent"
android:background="#ffff0000"
android:orientation="vertical"
android:paddingLeft="16dp"
android:paddingRight="16dp" >
<LinearLayout
android:id="#+id/first"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="76dp"
android:background="#175797"
android:orientation="vertical" >
<EditText
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:hint="Subject" />
</LinearLayout>
<LinearLayout
android:id="#+id/second"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="100dp"
android:background="#00FFFF"
android:orientation="vertical" >
<Button
android:layout_width="100dp"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:text="Send" />
</LinearLayout>
<LinearLayout
android:layout_gravity="bottom"
android:id="#+id/third"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="200dp"
android:background="#FFA500"
android:orientation="horizontal" >
</LinearLayout>
</LinearLayout>
This is code for the mock-up. For the project it's pretty much the same
Try this !
I tried putting Linear layout inside a relative layout and defining its gravity. I checked it on various resolution.Give it a try
<LinearLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="match_parent"
android:background="#ffff0000"
android:orientation="vertical"
android:paddingLeft="16dp"
android:paddingRight="16dp" >
<LinearLayout
android:id="#+id/first"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="76dp"
android:background="#175797"
android:orientation="vertical" >
<EditText
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:hint="Subject" />
</LinearLayout>
<LinearLayout
android:id="#+id/second"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="100dp"
android:background="#00FFFF"
android:orientation="vertical" >
<Button
android:layout_width="100dp"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:text="Send" />
</LinearLayout>
<RelativeLayout
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="fill_parent"
android:gravity="center"
>
<LinearLayout
android:id="#+id/third"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="200dp"
android:background="#FFA500"
android:gravity="center"
android:orientation="horizontal" >
</LinearLayout>
</RelativeLayout>
you can try #g00dy answer or else
You have to create separate layout for phablet (i.e. 5 inch devices)
Here in this link they had explain how we can put our tablets layouts...
On android developer site they have had explain how android manage layouts for different screen sizes check this link
May be try android:layout_gravity="center" that should do the trick :)
Also in addition, you can add android:layout_centerInParent="true" and take a look at this thread as well.
for giving the compatibility of xml for all android devices and tablets, please use the Relative Layout as a parent view and set the component according to your requirement.
please follow this link for more reference: http://developer.android.com/reference/android/widget/RelativeLayout.html
I tried to use the include tag to reuse the layout code from the activity_main.xml and contact_details.xml during landscape mode. I would like to display the activity_main on the left and contact_details on the right. But the application crashes when I switch to landscape mode.
This is the coding for the activity_main.xml
<LinearLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
android:layout_width="fill_parent"
android:layout_height="fill_parent"
android:orientation="vertical" >
<ListView
android:id="#+id/list_data"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="match_parent"
android:layout_weight="1" />
<Button
android:id="#+id/btnAddContact"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_marginTop="5dp"
android:layout_weight="0"
android:text="Add Contact" />
</LinearLayout>
This is the coding for contact_details.xml
<LinearLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="match_parent"
android:orientation="vertical" >
<ListView
android:id="#+id/lvContactDetails"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content" >
</ListView>
</LinearLayout>
This is the coding for my layout-land/activity_main.xml
<LinearLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
android:layout_width="fill_parent"
android:layout_height="fill_parent"
android:orientation="horizontal" >
<include layout="#layout/activity_main"/>
<View
android:layout_width="1dp"
android:layout_height="fill_parent"
android:background="#A3A3A3"/>
<include layout="#layout/contact_details"/>
</LinearLayout>
Any tips for resolving this problem? Thanks in advance.
Thanks Adinia for the suggestion. It was because I should not call back the same Layout name, which is activity_main.xml. This is the main cause of the crash. it might be a circular reference as Adinia had stated. Thanks again. By the way, I am only allowed to accept my answer in 2 days.
In your activity_main.xml ,contact_details.xml you are using
android:layout_width="fill_parent"
instead that try using
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
If not post you logcat report
After many hours I can't fix button on the bottom of activity. Either is invisible or at the top. I tried also without relative layout, I tried adding another linear layout, but I still don't know how set this button.

First, you have a warning in Legacy Android Layout Editor, that either RelativeLayout or LinearLayout is useless. That should be a hint for you. Pay attention to warnings, they're helpful in most of the times.
Indeed, you can get rid of LinearLayout.
So, the solution is:
Remove LinearLayout.
Add android:layout_below="#+id/imageView1" to the WebView.
Add android:layout_alignParentBottom="true" to the Button.
Add android:contentDescription to ImageView.
Use #string instead of hardcoded strings.
Optional steps are not bolded, they will remove warnings.
Whole working code, tested under Android 4.1.2:
<RelativeLayout
xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
xmlns:tools="http://schemas.android.com/tools"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="match_parent"
android:orientation="vertical" >
<ImageView
android:id="#+id/imageView1"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:contentDescription="TODO: DESCRIPTION"
android:src="#drawable/ic_launcher" />
<WebView
android:id="#+id/webView1"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_alignParentLeft="true"
android:layout_below="#+id/imageView1" />
<Button
android:id="#+id/newsbutton"
style="?android:attr/buttonStyleSmall"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_gravity="bottom"
android:layout_alignParentBottom="true"
android:text="Chiudi" />
</RelativeLayout>
copy paste the following in your button component ;)
android:layout_marginBottom="147dp"
android:layout_marginTop="50dp"
android:layout_marginleft="50dp"
android:layout_marginRight="47dp"
play only with the numbers and Im sure ull get the hang of it :)
Just add android:layout_below="#id/webView1" in your button.
If you would use LinearLayout, you could set the Widget that should fill the empty space like this: layout_height="0dp" and layout_weight="1". This should do the job too.
Hey im having trouble with these linear layouts in android xml. initially i did them in a relative layout and it worked fine, but after some research i discovered that relative layouts inside of a scrollview doesnt work supposedly. so now after much tweaking my imageview shows up but has a huge margin above and below it and my textview doesnt even show up aside from being where its supposed to in the graphics editor but blank.
so whats wrong? should i even be using a linear layout?
this is roughly what its supposed to look like http://www.mediafire.com/view/?z945tz2vrb2x46t
and this is what it looks like after Abdul and Ralgha's help as well as setting the base linear layout's height to wrap content http://www.mediafire.com/view/?px17q2z3yyeo8az
Thanks

Don't worry about weight right now, leave it removed. In your TextView, change "android:src" to "android:text" (without the quotes naturally). If that alone doesn't solve it, remove the textSize line and see what happens. If that works, then you can start playing with sizes (and weights if needed).
Also, textSize should be given in sp rather than dp. sp is for text, dp is for everything else, though that's not what is causing your problem.
