Android: tap on action bar doesn't open navigation drawer - android

Taking inspiration by the (default project inside android studio) and various sites I wanted to implement the navigation drawer as a fragment as both layout and code.But at the time the action of opening the navigation drawer when tapping the action bar does not work. Why default project works? Is it almost the same code.
code:
public class NavigationDrawerFragment extends Fragment {
/**
* Users of this fragment must call this method to set up the navigation drawer interactions.
*
* #param fragmentId The android:id of this fragment in its activity's layout.
* #param drawerLayout The DrawerLayout containing this fragment's UI.
*/
public void setUp(int fragmentId, View drawerLayout) {
Log.d(TAG,"setUp started");
if (drawerLayout instanceof DrawerLayout) {//if view smartphone
mFragmentContainerView = getActivity().findViewById(fragmentId);
mDrawerLayout = (DrawerLayout)drawerLayout;
// set a custom shadow that overlays the main content when the drawer opens
mDrawerLayout.setDrawerShadow(R.drawable.drawer_shadow, GravityCompat.START);
// set up the drawer's list view with items and click listener
ActionBar actionBar = getActionBar();
actionBar.setDisplayHomeAsUpEnabled(true);
actionBar.setHomeButtonEnabled(true);
// ActionBarDrawerToggle ties together the the proper interactions
// between the navigation drawer and the action bar app icon.
mDrawerToggle = new ActionBarDrawerToggle(
getActivity(), /* host Activity */
mDrawerLayout, /* DrawerLayout object */
R.drawable.ic_drawer, /* nav drawer image to replace 'Up' caret */
R.string.drawer_open, /* "open drawer" description for accessibility */
R.string.drawer_close /* "close drawer" description for accessibility */
) {
#Override
public void onDrawerClosed(View drawerView) {
super.onDrawerClosed(drawerView);
getActionBar().setTitle(getString(R.string.app_name));
}
#Override
public void onDrawerOpened(View drawerView) {
super.onDrawerOpened(drawerView);
getActionBar().setTitle(getString(R.string.visualing_when_drawer_open));
if (!mUserLearnedDrawer) {
// The user manually opened the drawer; store this flag to prevent auto-showing
// the navigation drawer automatically in the future.
mUserLearnedDrawer = true;
SharedPreferences sp = PreferenceManager.getDefaultSharedPreferences(getActivity());
sp.edit().putBoolean(PREF_USER_LEARNED_DRAWER, true).apply();
}
}
};
// If the user hasn't 'learned' about the drawer, open it to introduce them to the drawer,
// per the navigation drawer design guidelines.
if (!mUserLearnedDrawer && !mFromSavedInstanceState) {
mDrawerLayout.openDrawer(mFragmentContainerView);
}
// Defer code dependent on restoration of previous instance state.
mDrawerLayout.post(new Runnable() {
#Override
public void run() {
mDrawerToggle.syncState();
}
});
mDrawerLayout.setDrawerListener(mDrawerToggle);
}
}
#Override
public void onConfigurationChanged(Configuration newConfig) {
super.onConfigurationChanged(newConfig);
mDrawerToggle.onConfigurationChanged(newConfig);
}
"MainActivity":
public class MyActivity extends Activity implements NavigationDrawerFragment.NavigationDrawerCallbacks {
private final String TAG = getClass().getSimpleName();
private boolean doubleBackToExitPressedOnce;
#Override
protected void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) {
super.onCreate(savedInstanceState);
setContentView(R.layout.activity_my);
NavigationDrawerFragment mNavigationDrawerFragment = (NavigationDrawerFragment) getFragmentManager().findFragmentById(R.id.navigation_drawer);
mNavigationDrawerFragment.setUp(R.id.navigation_drawer, findViewById(R.id.drawer_layout));//TODO error for tablet (not DrawerLayout but Linear)
}
If u want all the project is available at github page here (branch develop).
FIRST ATTEMPT : I tried to set this on navigationdrawerfragment class but doesn't work
#Override
public void onActivityCreated (Bundle savedInstanceState) {
super.onActivityCreated(savedInstanceState);
mDrawerToggle.syncState();
}
SECOND ATTEMPT : I tried to set this inside "MainActivity" but doesn't work
#Override
protected void onPostCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) {
super.onPostCreate(savedInstanceState);
// Sync the toggle state after onRestoreInstanceState has occurred.
NavigationDrawerFragment.mDrawerToggle.syncState();
}

Add this to your NavigationDrawerFragment:
#Override
public void onCreateOptionsMenu(Menu menu, MenuInflater inflater) {
// If the drawer is open, show the global app actions in the action bar. See also
// showGlobalContextActionBar, which controls the top-left area of the action bar.
if (mDrawerLayout != null && isDrawerOpen()) {
inflater.inflate(R.menu.global, menu);
showGlobalContextActionBar();
}
super.onCreateOptionsMenu(menu, inflater);
}
#Override
public boolean onOptionsItemSelected(MenuItem item) {
if (mDrawerToggle.onOptionsItemSelected(item)) {
return true;
}
return super.onOptionsItemSelected(item);
}
And at this to the setup method at the end of onDrawerOpened:
getActivity().supportInvalidateOptionsMenu(); // calls onPrepareOptionsMenu()
This is missing in your code, add this and it will probably work

To close the Navigation Drawer on touch of screen

I am new to this Android. Here I got stuck with one problem that when I click
on Navigation Drawer item then it give other item and then on touch of screen then Navigation Drawer get closed but back button still there.
I put mDrawerLayout.ontouchlistener it does work but i want that icon back on click on screen. I does not want back button
When I click on category item inside Navigation Drawer:
Then I put another adapter with different ArrayList in ExpandableListView:
But when I touch on screen then it close Navigation Drawer but back icon is still there:
set
getSupportActionBar().setDisplayHomeAsUpEnabled(false);
getSupportActionBar().setHomeButtonEnabled(false);
inside your activity.
I checked in developers.android.com. They gave one small solution. Hope this works.
private ActionBarDrawerToggle mDrawerToggle;
...
private DrawerLayout mDrawerLayout;
public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) {
...
mDrawerLayout = (DrawerLayout) findViewById(R.id.drawer_layout);
mDrawerToggle = new ActionBarDrawerToggle(
this, /* host Activity */
mDrawerLayout, /* DrawerLayout object */
R.drawable.ic_drawer, /* nav drawer icon to replace 'Up' caret */
R.string.drawer_open, /* "open drawer" description */
R.string.drawer_close /* "close drawer" description */
) {
/** Called when a drawer has settled in a completely closed state. */
public void onDrawerClosed(View view) {
super.onDrawerClosed(view);
getActionBar().setTitle(mTitle);
}
/** Called when a drawer has settled in a completely open state. */
public void onDrawerOpened(View drawerView) {
super.onDrawerOpened(drawerView);
getActionBar().setTitle(mDrawerTitle);
}
};
// Set the drawer toggle as the DrawerListener
mDrawerLayout.setDrawerListener(mDrawerToggle);
getActionBar().setDisplayHomeAsUpEnabled(true);
getActionBar().setHomeButtonEnabled(true);
}
#Override
protected void onPostCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) {
super.onPostCreate(savedInstanceState);
// Sync the toggle state after onRestoreInstanceState has occurred.
mDrawerToggle.syncState();
}
#Override
public void onConfigurationChanged(Configuration newConfig) {
super.onConfigurationChanged(newConfig);
mDrawerToggle.onConfigurationChanged(newConfig);
}
#Override
public boolean onOptionsItemSelected(MenuItem item) {
// Pass the event to ActionBarDrawerToggle, if it returns
// true, then it has handled the app icon touch event
if (mDrawerToggle.onOptionsItemSelected(item)) {
return true;
}
// Handle your other action bar items...
return super.onOptionsItemSelected(item);
}
...
}

Do not open navigation drawer by default

I made a new app with a navigation drawer. But always when I start my app the navigation drawer is opened by default and i have to close it. How con change it? I only whant to start my app and don't see the nav drawer opened!
My full code of the NavDrawer is this:

*/

/**
* Called when an item in the navigation drawer is selected.
*/
void onNavigationDrawerItemSelected(int position);
}
}
This is the bit of code that's doing it:
// If the user hasn't 'learned' about the drawer, open it to introduce them to the drawer,
// per the navigation drawer design guidelines.
if (!mUserLearnedDrawer && !mFromSavedInstanceState) {
mDrawerLayout.openDrawer(mFragmentContainerView);
}
That's there so that people become aware of the drawer. Once the user uses it themselves, it'll be closed initially. Not all users are going to be as experienced as you with app navigation.
Your drawer should have this method
drawerLayout.closeDrawers();
Above code will close the drawer. Put it where your drawer is initializing.

Left and Right Drawers simultaneously while using fragments in DrawerLayout

I created new project using New Android Application and created a blank activity with Navigation Type : Navigation Drawer it created main activity with DrawerLayout like following.
<!--
As the main content view, the view below consumes the entire
space available using match_parent in both dimensions.
-->
<FrameLayout
android:id="#+id/container"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="match_parent" />
<!--
android:layout_gravity="start" tells DrawerLayout to treat
this as a sliding drawer on the left side for left-to-right
languages and on the right side for right-to-left languages.
If you're not building against API 17 or higher, use
android:layout_gravity="left" instead.
-->
<!--
The drawer is given a fixed width in dp and extends the full height of
the container.
-->
<fragment
android:id="#+id/navigation_drawer"
android:name="com.taazi.Fragments.NavigationDrawerFragment"
android:layout_width="#dimen/navigation_drawer_width"
android:layout_height="match_parent"
android:layout_gravity="start" />
I need two drawers one on left for navigation and one on right for some other purpose. I saw many solution using listview for drawer with gravity left/start or end/right however this does not work with fragment.
Following is the code of fragment
/**
* Fragment used for managing interactions for and presentation of a navigation drawer.
* See the <a href="https://developer.android.com/design/patterns/navigation- drawer.html#Interaction">

I tried following things.
1) Make duplicate of fragment with id #+id/navigation_drawer_right and gravity end and also make duplicate of fragment class also.
Add another child to the DrawerLayout in your XML and give it android: android:layout_gravity ="right" (or android: android:layout_gravity ="end" if you want right-to-left support as well).

How to remove Example Action?

I have been using the default drawer in Android studio, but it comes with two objects in the action bar, which has been annoying my users, that I cannot figure out how to remove: Example Action and Settings.

Just go to the project folder res/menu/ and remove the items you don't want from the content of main.xml file
Look at the file res/menu/main.xml (name may be different) and delete the following lines:
<item android:id="#+id/action_example"
android:title="#string/action_example"
app:showAsAction="withText|ifRoom" />
You also have to delete anywhere it is referred.
Hope this helps.
Your Example Action is showing from:
Toast.makeText(getActivity(), "Example action.", Toast.LENGTH_SHORT).show();
return true;
just do as return false, your "Example action" will be removed.

ActionBarActivity with ActionBarDrawerToggle - Not using drawerImageRes

Working from this android example, I've attempted to create an app that uses the support version (android.support.v4 and android.support.v7).
The example creates a menu drawer that looks like this
and my code gets this
Notice the icon is different and the way it moves is different, well in my version it doesn't move.
Example code
public class MainActivity extends Activity {
private DrawerLayout mDrawerLayout;
private ListView mDrawerList;
private ActionBarDrawerToggle mDrawerToggle;
private CharSequence mDrawerTitle;
private CharSequence mTitle;
private String[] mPlanetTitles;
#Override
protected void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) {
super.onCreate(savedInstanceState);
setContentView(R.layout.activity_main);
mTitle = mDrawerTitle = getTitle();
mPlanetTitles = getResources().getStringArray(R.array.planets_array);
mDrawerLayout = (DrawerLayout) findViewById(R.id.drawer_layout);
mDrawerList = (ListView) findViewById(R.id.left_drawer);
// set a custom shadow that overlays the main content when the drawer opens
mDrawerLayout.setDrawerShadow(R.drawable.drawer_shadow, GravityCompat.START);
// set up the drawer's list view with items and click listener
mDrawerList.setAdapter(new ArrayAdapter<String>(this,
R.layout.drawer_list_item, mPlanetTitles));
mDrawerList.setOnItemClickListener(new DrawerItemClickListener());
// enable ActionBar app icon to behave as action to toggle nav drawer
getActionBar().setDisplayHomeAsUpEnabled(true);
getActionBar().setHomeButtonEnabled(true);
// ActionBarDrawerToggle ties together the the proper interactions
// between the sliding drawer and the action bar app icon
mDrawerToggle = new ActionBarDrawerToggle(
this, /* host Activity */
mDrawerLayout, /* DrawerLayout object */
R.drawable.ic_drawer, /* nav drawer image to replace 'Up' caret */
R.string.drawer_open, /* "open drawer" description for accessibility */
R.string.drawer_close /* "close drawer" description for accessibility */
) {
public void onDrawerClosed(View view) {
getActionBar().setTitle(mTitle);
invalidateOptionsMenu(); // creates call to onPrepareOptionsMenu()
}
public void onDrawerOpened(View drawerView) {
getActionBar().setTitle(mDrawerTitle);
invalidateOptionsMenu(); // creates call to onPrepareOptionsMenu()
}
};
mDrawerLayout.setDrawerListener(mDrawerToggle);
if (savedInstanceState == null) {
selectItem(0);
}
}

}
/* Called whenever we call invalidateOptionsMenu() */

Does anyone know why its not using my toggle icon or moving? Or is it that you can't do it like that using the support libraries?
I'm still investigating what I missed and will update this answer accordingly. Though as #kaedill mentions it is possible using the support libraries.
Here is a full copy of the Google example, edited by myself to use the support libraries.
public class MainActivity extends ActionBarActivity {
private DrawerLayout mDrawerLayout;
private ListView mDrawerList;
private ActionBarDrawerToggle mDrawerToggle;
private CharSequence mDrawerTitle;
private CharSequence mTitle;
private String[] mPlanetTitles;
#Override

mDrawerLayout = (DrawerLayout) findViewById(R.id.drawer_layout);
mDrawerList = (ListView) findViewById(R.id.left_drawer);
// set a custom shadow that overlays the main content when the drawer opens
mDrawerLayout.setDrawerShadow(R.drawable.drawer_shadow, GravityCompat.START);
// set up the drawer's list view with items and click listener

R.layout.drawer_list_item, mPlanetTitles));
mDrawerList.setOnItemClickListener(new DrawerItemClickListener());
// enable ActionBar app icon to behave as action to toggle nav drawer

I have tested this and it works as it should on a Gingerbread device.
I am going to go through the changes in my app and figure out what I did wrong.
Update
After a painful dissection of my original code, I ported my code into the working example and a diff showed my error.
#Override
protected void onPostCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) {
super.onPostCreate(savedInstanceState);
// Sync the toggle state after onRestoreInstanceState has occurred.
mDrawerToggle.syncState();
}
My original code had not overridden the onPostCreate method. An annoying little bug to find! Hope it helps someone else out in the future.
You can do it with the support libraries. The only difference I can see from my working version with the ActionbarActivity is a call to super like this:
public void onDrawerClosed(View drawerView)
{
super.onDrawerClosed(drawerView);
getSupportActionBar().setTitle(mTitle);
supportInvalidateOptionsMenu(); // creates call to onPrepareOptionsMenu()
Log("onDrawerOpened()");
}
public void onDrawerOpened(View drawerView) {
super.onDrawerOpened(drawerView);
getSupportActionBar().setTitle(mDrawerTitle);
supportInvalidateOptionsMenu(); // creates call to onPrepareOptionsMenu()
Log("onDrawerOpened()");
}
Did you copy the ic_drawer drawable from the example to your project? I think yes because the code should no compile without that drawable, but when I've implemented DrawerLayout in my app, I had to copy that drawable inside my resources.
