tempCanvas.drawArc(cx - mInnerCircleRadius, cy + mInnerCircleRadius,cy + mInnerCircleRadius,cy + mInnerCircleRadius);
For example, the above code is too long, so I want to break the line at every ,. Eclipse will do it but Android Studio won't break the line when I hit format code. Is there any method to do it?
In Android Studio (and probably any other IDE) you don't break (wrap) lines by , or any other character, you define a maximum line width and set the formatter to ensure the maximum line width is not exceeded.
You do that on File -> Settings on Windows, or in Preferences on Mac OS.
To do this in Android Studio go to
File > Settings > Editor > Code Style
and set Right margin (columns) to 120 (or the line width you want)
Now go to
File > Settings > Editor > Code Style > Java > Wrapping and Braces (tab)
and check the checkbox Ensure right margin in not exceeded
Apply the changes and press OK
Now in the editor, to format your code to that line width, press:
Code > Reformat Code...
Done
In Mac OS instead of File > Settings go to Preferences, follow the same steps.
Configure > Settings > Editor > 'Use soft wraps in editor'
Or right click on the divider where you can choose to show line numbers, and click 'Use soft wraps'
This won't break your code at your commas, but it will wrap your code so it's not too long to read.
On the latest Android Studio:
Goto File > Settings > Editor > Code style > Java > Wrapping and Braces
Change do not wrap to wrap if long for all the items
Now Select the portion of the text you want to format and press ctrl + Alt + L
File> Settings > Editor > Code Style > Kotlin > 'Set from...' - 'Predefined Style' - 'Kotlin style guide'
when you want to use predefined code style for Kotlin in Android Studio/Idea (general rules from Coding Conventions)
File -> Settings > Editor > Code Style.
Then select Wrap on typing CHECKBOX.
If you don't wanna wrap a line:
File -> Settings -> Editor -> Soft Wraps -> Uncheck Use soft wraps in editor
As a reminder to others visiting this question, you can also manually add line breaks by hitting enter after the commas or other appropriate places in the code. Android Studio will automatically indent it. This makes long lines more readable.
tempCanvas.drawArc(
cx - mInnerCircleRadius, // You can also add comments
cy + mInnerCircleRadius, // to different parts of a line
cy + mInnerCircleRadius, // this way.
cy + mInnerCircleRadius);
You can make it automatically for all files by
Editor -> General -> Soft-Wraps, check the Soft-wrap files and input needed filetype (for example *.java) in input field, now any new and even opened files will autowrap long strings. No any additional actions needed.

When I write something on the android studio, the line goes on over the right screen. How do I turn on word soft wrap in android studio?
If you are on mac and want to soft wrap just the current active Editor, here is how to do it: -
On the menu bar
View -> Active Editor -> Soft-Wrap
Please goto "File->Settings->Editor->General" tab and check "Use soft wraps in editor". it will solve your problem.
Updates: As #ThePartyTurtle mentioned on the comment some versions of Android Studio specifically from v3.5.3 This option is available via
Android Studio->Preferences...->Editor->General
You go to Android Studio > Preferences > Editor > General > Soft Wraps
then you have to indicate what type of documents you want the soft wrap to be applied on. Be sure to separate each type with a semicolon.
example: *.md; *.txt; *.rst; *.adoc; *.dart; *.plist;
Image that complements the explanation of the menus
If u want to use soft wrap by default go through the following steps
step-1 : Click on view ( in Navigation bar )
step-2 : Choose Active Editor
step-3 : Click on Soft wrap
that's it ...
File>Settings>Editor>General
Android Studio Arctic Fox Solution
From the menu:
File > Settings > General
Tick the Soft-wrap these files checkbox.
File > Settings > General
Tick the "Soft-wrap these files:" checkbox, and write *.*
Apply > OK
Here's my 2 cents:
A quick way to toggle word-wraps:
Ctrl + Shit + A : (opens a search window with "Actions" tab enabled.)
Type Soft wrap
Press enter on the first search-result: View | Active Editor Soft-wrap
Cheers 🍻
If you are on mac: Android Studio -> Preferences -> Editor -> General -> Soft-wrap these files
If you are on Windows : Settings > Editor > General > Soft-wrap these files
To enable Soft-wrap, write the following code in the box in front of the checkbox
*.* to wrap all the files in the editor
*.<extension_of_file> to wrap files with specific extension an separated by semicolon
Is there way to disable auto save in Android Studio?
I have already unchecked "Save files automatically if application is idle for n sec"
under Setting->General.
Anything else to be done?
Disable Autosave
File > Settings > Appearance & Behavior > System Settings > Autosave > then uncheck both Save files if the IDE is idle for |15| seconds and Save files when switching to a different application > Apply
After doing the above, you may like to do enable the following 2 options too-
Mark Changed But Unsaved File
File > Settings > Editor > General > Editor Tabs > then check Mark modified (*) > Apply
Save One File with Ctrl+S
File > Settings > Keymap > search with save document > right click Save Document > Add Keyboard Shortcut > press Ctrl+S> OK > Remove > Apply
In android Studio 2.1.1, 2016
File -> Settings -> Appearance and Behavior -> System Settings
And see synchronization paragraph and uncheck autosave and/or 'use safe write'
If you go to Settings, and type Save in the search you will find under the IDE Settings an area called "General". From there you can find a number of options to control saving. It sometimes does not work and saving will continue anyway. Unfortunately there is no universal "turn-off" switch. AS is a hand holding IDE, you just have to get use to it.
Settings section you are seeking looks like this:
For Android Studio v3.3
Open Settings (Ctrl+Alt+S or File->Settings)
On the top left corner of the settings menu, search for "save" in the search bar field
Click on System Settings and all the sub-settings related to save will be highlighted
Uncheck Save files automatically if application is idle for * sec
Click on apply and close the settings menu.
It is highly recommended to follow this method
Mark Changed But Unsaved File which will help you distinguish between your unsaved and saved files.
I'm using Android Studio, and layout xml indentation is auto-formatting in somewhat wrong way for me.
Instead of
<!-- case1: miss-diffs on git -->
<SomeXML
attr1="hello" >
</SomeXML>
or
<!-- case2: wrong end(?) indentation level -->
<SomeXML
attr1="world"
>
</SomeXML>
I'd like to format my xml as
<SomeXML
attr1="hello"
>
</SomeXML>
so that my git diff won't show any miss-diffs from case1,
and without wrong indentation level (case2) to confuse myself.
Are there any options in intellij for this?
Thanks in advance : )
Go to File -> Settings -> Editor -> Code Style -> XML
Change the Scheme there to Default. Normally it doesn't restrict on what you are trying to do, unnless there is any defined settings.
On Android Studio 4.0.1:
Go to Settings (or Preferences on MaxOS) -> Editor -> Code Style -> XML -> "Other" Tab.
Check Keep line breaks.
does anyone know how to add code snippets in Android Studio IDE?
I didn't found a menu entry or something like this.
I also want to know is it possible to change the existing snippets?
To add/edit templates:
On the menu choose File -> Settings, then under IDE Settings (or Editor) go to Live Templates.
To insert a template:
On the menu choose Code -> Insert Live Template (or use it's assigned shortcut key).
Screenshot Android Studio 3.4
Code snippets are known as Live Templates in Android Studio
Browse the current Live Templates
Go to File > Settings > Editor > Live Templates. Then click on the different options to see what they do.
Here are some interesting ones:
foreach
for ($i$ : $data$) {
$cursor$
}
Toast
android.widget.Toast.makeText($className$.this, "$text$", Toast.LENGTH_SHORT).show();
todo
// TODO: $date$ $todo$
logi
android.util.Log.i(TAG, "$METHOD_NAME$: $content$");
The words surrounded by $ signs are places where things will be filled in automatically from the context or where the user can tab through to fill them in.
Use a Live Template
Just type in the abbreviation and tab through anything that you need to fill in.
Example:
logi
and I'm given this
Log.i(TAG, "myMethodName: |");
with the cursor located at the position I marked with the vertical line |.
Make you own Live Template
Just write the code, highlight it, and go to Tools > Save as Live Template.

Go to Settings (File > Settings, or CTRLALT + S) then search for "Live Templates".
A template screen will be opened. You can see here all live templates and you can also create your own custom live templates.
It is important that you choose the correct template group to define your new template (e.g. "Android").
As an example, I will define a Toast method as a live template.
You can also click "use static import as possible" not to be handle importing stuff.
Cntr + j : to insert an existant live template.
File -> Settings -> Editor -> Code style -> live Templates >> add a template with button +
edit your template and OK :)

like this:
then type your abbreviation name and use your template any where
I got this error whenever I tired to view previous version of XML file via SVN Team => Show History. How can I able to solve this problem?
Could not open the editor. Andriod XML Editor cannot process this input.
You can solve the problem by changing your Eclipse preferences: Window menu -> Preferences -> General -> Editors -> File Associations; select *.xml, choose XML Editor and click "Default" button.
I have solved this problem, following steps worked for me -
Open Window > Preferences > General > Content Types
Select "Text"
Under "File associations"
Select *.xml
Click remove button on right side and then ok in bottom
