I created a project with a blank activity (and then wrote code to put in a basic fragment - empty linear layout) in Android Studio but there is no ActionBar showing. Why?
Device: Emulator (Nexus 5 size), API 19
The main activity extends FragmentActivity.

Instead of extending FragmentActivity, I need the main class to extend AppCompatActivity.

If you're using the v7 appcompat library, your activity should instead extend ActionBarActivity, which is a subclass of FragmentActivity (for more information, read Adding the Action Bar).
EDIT
ActionBarActivity is now deprecated. Use AppCompatActivity instead.

So for the layout you are inflating for the item you can use

You can also use developer options on your device to see layout bounds or check the view hierarchy to see which item is giving you problems

My activity_main.xml has the theme I am looking for. Some activities such as activity_disaster.xml has a partial application, and one activity_disaster_overview.xml has nothing, and is missing the action bar.

It turned out to be a version of Android studio. I upgraded to 3.0.1 an the issues disappeared.

The theme of your application is not a descendant of AppCompat theme, whereas your TabLayout is from support packages.
You either have to stick with AppCompat theme and views, or entirely be support packages independent, otherwise such nasty issues will rise.
From some doucment , I know ActionBarActivity display app title by default. I create a Activity with eclipse, I have set android:theme as android:Theme.Light, I find the Activity still display Title by default, why?

I have a tabhost and there is an activity inside. I want this activity to have customized title bar so I used the following code. But it gives the error Cannot combine custom titles with other titles features. I look at the file and see only one theme applied to it, I am not sure why this is happening... Any idea? I am also using dialogtheme for other activities in my tabhost, but I think that is fine because I am applying my custom theme only to one Activity(which is named startActivity).
