I am wanting to customise the rows of the overflow menu in the action bar. I found a great blog post explaining how to go about doing this, which seem simple enough. The link is below.
http://scriptedpapers.com/2014/08/12/android-action-bar-overflow-menu-customization/
I am specifically wanting to change the background colour of the overflow menu rows so the theme that I am using looks like the following:
<resources>

Applying this theme to the application, the background colour of the overflow menu remains the same colour as the default for Holo.Light.DarkActionBar, despite setting a custom popupMenuStyle.
For my project, the minSdkVersion is 15 and targetSdkVersion is 19.
Does anyone have any ideas?
Thanks.
Try specifying a 9-patch drawable instead of a color.
Go here and choose the color that you want your rows to be by selecting a color from the "Popup color" drop-down.
The only file you need from the zip is menu_dropdown_panel.9.png.
Make sure to place this file in your various drawable-xxxx folders.
Then use it like this:

If it still doesn't work, add this to the above:
Add this line to your main theme (CustomActionBarTheme):

#style/PopupWrapper

Then add this:

Related
Android Studio 1.1.0. SDK 22 Installed&Compiled, SDK 17 Target (I suppose it's not relevant, because issue occurs also on preview in IDE).
I started playing with Holo theme action bar styling and ran into an issue, involving background color. This is my styles.xml:
<resources>

</resources>
And this is output. I want app title's background color to be the same as action bar's. As I've said, it's the same on the preview, so I don't think it's because my phone(SDK17) or emulator. Overflow button behaves the same way, there just isn't any in this case.
I tried setting android:titleTextStyle in BarTheme to this style:

But it didn't change a thing. What do I do to overcome this?
try ,

Due to David's input I solved my problem myself. I had to set windowBackground, instead of background in AppTheme. I'm not sure what is the exact difference, but it works properly. Remember not to change attribute in your BarTheme, because it won't work with windowBackground. Therefore correct styles.xml file is:
<resources>
<color name="bcColor">#ff0d3200</color>

</resources>
Note that color has to be defined as resource in this case and cannot be hardcoded. The clean way to do this is create colors.xml in values folder and define all colors there.
I want to change the color of text in my actionBar (from black to white), but it seems like nothing's working... somebody has suggestions?
Use custom style (If you are using Actionbarsherlock)

in the themes.xml file.
Edit
to apply the theme

and in your activity/application in manifest
android:theme="#style/Theme.Custom"
probably the easiest way to style the action bar is using the action bar style generator online tool, you can find it here: http://jgilfelt.github.io/android-actionbarstylegenerator .
It will take care of generating all the needed assets and styles.
To have the text white, you can simply select "Dark" or "Light - Dark Actionbar" as base theme, then change the other colors according to your needs.
I'm trying to apply some styles to my app. I've created a custom theme for the ActionBar using this actionbarstylegenerator.
But I want to change also in my app, the stock blue Holo color, to a red one, at least on buttons.
So, I have the custom theme for the ActionBar (Compat), and for the other side, a custom theme to change the Holo color.
In my app, I have defined the custom theme for the Actionbar, and I want to set the custom Holo theme inside the Actionbar's theme, but I don't know how to call, or where can I find the item name's whose define the variable you want to modify.
This is, I need to set this:

Inside of this:

Maybe you need to do this?

Now, that doesn't seem to be working, so I added

#style/SpinnerItemStyle

To the children theme too:

and used it on the main theme:

But the text is still non-visible.

I'm using a custom theme that inherits from DarkActionBar and I want to customize dropdown menu to be white like when using Light Holo theme.
I've been able to change the background to white using:

But I haven't any clue of how to change the text color to black. Because after setting white drawable the problem is that text isn't visible because is white on white background.
I answer myself after some investigation.
In addition to question's styling you need to:
Customize android:spinnerDropDownItemStyle for actionBarWidgetTheme changing it's text appearance.
Also don't forget that dropdown list is managed by the adapter you use. Then if you used the standard one (simple_dropdown_item_1line) there's no problem. But if you used a custom one like me (to be able to add an icon) don't forget to apply style="?attr/spinnerDropDownItemStyle" in your layout TextView.
Then final custom style is:
<resources xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android">

Where drawables in myapp_DropDownNav are white background ones that you can generate with ActionBar Style generator in Android Asset Studio
Try setting itemTextAppearance. That should achieve what you want.
I have stumbled on what may be the simplest way to do this. I was working with the AppCompat library.

My advice is to simply inherit from the Sherlock.Light theme and change the applicable fields to the Dark values. For my app, we wanted a white "up" icon, and white text for the action labels. I don't provide dark versions of my actionbar icons, so they are all white anyway. So after several hours messing around with it and following different people's suggestions, I finally found what I was looking for in the ABS themes file.
I inherit from Sherlock.Light (well, technically HoloEverywhereLight.Sherlock but...) and change:

#color/White

#color/White

#drawable/abs__ic_ab_back_holo_dark

#drawable/abs__ic_ab_back_holo_dark

#drawable/abs__list_divider_holo_dark

#drawable/abs__list_divider_holo_dark

That's it. It's way simpler and easier than trying to extend classes, restyle things in code, etc.
