Android AdView leaking, probably due to some internal background thread - android

I display an AdMob ad banner within a window created by a fragment. This works, but I'm getting strange leaking problems I don't understand yet. When I open and close the app a lot of times, the ad fragment is properly destroyed every time, but the MainActivity which controls this fragment is leaking:
The guilty one is this line in code:
adRequest = new AdRequest.Builder().addTestDevice(DEVICE_ID_MOTO_G).addTestDevice(DEVICE_ID_ZTE).build();
mAdView.loadAd(adRequest);
(You can see below that I already tried to nullify the adRequest, but no result.) Anyway, when I comment these two lines, the leaks don't occur. I tested it twice, because it was hard to believe that this invocation leaks, but it does. Here is the fragment code. As you can see, I even nullify everything that is possible in onDestroy(). I can assure that onDestroy() is called. loadAd starty any background thread. I guess that has to do with that problem.
public class SnippetFragment extends Fragment
{
private AdView mAdView;
private OnAdFinishedLoadingListener onAdFinishedLoadingListener;
private Context context;
private AdRequest adRequest;
private final String DEVICE_ID_ZTE = "1CA20334345BB1479C43692AFA576456487A48";
private final String DEVICE_ID_MOTO_G = "131465469A7BE11543543065404B168908CB13C8D1";
public SnippetFragment(Context context)
{
this.context = context;
}
#Override
public void onActivityCreated(Bundle bundle)
{
super.onActivityCreated(bundle);
mAdView = (AdView)getView().findViewById(R.id.adView);
mAdView.setAdListener(new AdListener()
{
#Override
public void onAdLoaded()
{
super.onAdLoaded();
if (context != null)
{
onAdFinishedLoadingListener = (OnAdFinishedLoadingListener)context;
onAdFinishedLoadingListener.onAdLoaded();
}
}
});
//THIS SOMEHOW LEAKS!
adRequest = new AdRequest.Builder().addTestDevice(DEVICE_ID_MOTO_G).addTestDevice(DEVICE_ID_ZTE).build();
mAdView.loadAd(adRequest);
}
#Override
public View onCreateView(LayoutInflater inflater, ViewGroup container, Bundle savedInstanceState)
{
return inflater.inflate(R.layout.fragment_snippet, container, false);
}
/** Called when leaving the activity */
#Override
public void onPause()
{
if (mAdView != null)
{
mAdView.pause();
}
super.onPause();
}
/** Called when returning to the activity */
#Override
public void onResume()
{
super.onResume();
if (mAdView != null)
{
mAdView.resume();
}
}
/** Called before the activity is destroyed */
#Override
public void onDestroy()
{
adRequest = null;
if (mAdView != null)
{
mAdView.setAdListener(null);
mAdView.destroy();
mAdView = null;
}
context = null;
super.onDestroy();
}
}

I fortunately found the solution. You have to manually kick the AdView out of the surrounding layout, before the fragment gets destroyed. No leak anymore after I launched and closed the app about 20 times. Here is the updated fragment:
public class SnippetFragment extends Fragment
{
private AdView adView;
private OnAdFinishedLoadingListener onAdFinishedLoadingListener;
private Context context;
private LatLng routeDestination;
private AdRequest adRequest;
private LinearLayout snippetContent;
private final String DEVICE_ID_ZTE = "2353496z35752t3524267854";
private final String DEVICE_ID_MOTO_G = "4568735862378523675427897";
#Override
public void onActivityCreated(Bundle bundle)
{
super.onActivityCreated(bundle);
snippetContent = (LinearLayout)getView().findViewById(R.id.snippet_content);
adView = (AdView)getView().findViewById(R.id.adView);
adView.setAdListener(new AdListener()
{
#Override
public void onAdLoaded()
{
super.onAdLoaded();
if (context != null)
{
onAdFinishedLoadingListener = (OnAdFinishedLoadingListener)getActivity();
onAdFinishedLoadingListener.onAdLoaded();
}
}
});
adRequest = new AdRequest.Builder().addTestDevice(DEVICE_ID_MOTO_G).addTestDevice(DEVICE_ID_ZTE).build();
adView.loadAd(adRequest);
}
#Override
public View onCreateView(LayoutInflater inflater, ViewGroup container, Bundle savedInstanceState)
{
return inflater.inflate(R.layout.fragment_snippet, container, false);
}
#Override
public void onPause()
{
if (adView != null)
{
adView.pause();
}
super.onPause();
}
#Override
public void onResume()
{
super.onResume();
if (adView != null)
{
adView.resume();
}
}
#Override
public void onDestroy()
{
destroyAdView();
super.onDestroy();
}
private void destroyAdView()
{
if (adView != null)
{
adRequest = null;
adView.removeAllViews();
adView.setAdListener(null);
adView.destroy();
snippetContent.removeView(adView);
adView = null;
snippetContent = null;
}
}
}

NullPointerException - Handler.removeCallbacks(java.lang.Runnable)

I got some crash reports from my app on console. I tried to fix it but I stucked. I'm using custom progress dialog, my problem is about that. What should I do? Should I use removeCallBack?
FlipProgressDialog fpd; // this is my custom progress dialog
#Override
public void onPause() {
super.onPause();
fpd.dismissAllowingStateLoss();
}
#Override
public View onCreateView(LayoutInflater inflater, ViewGroup container, Bundle savedInstanceState) {
// Inflate the layout for this fragment
View view = inflater.inflate(R.layout.fragment_top_feeds, container, false);
this.mView = view;
fpd = new FlipProgressDialog(); //and initialized here for escape the nullpointer exception but not worked
fpd.setImageList(imageList);
fpd.setCanceledOnTouchOutside(false);
// Handler handler = new Handler();
Runnable myRunnable = new Runnable() {
#Override
public void run() {
new Listeleme().execute();
}
};
myRunnable.run();
//handler.removeCallbacks(myRunnable);
//I guess I need call the above but I couldn't apply properly
return view;
}
private class Listeleme extends AsyncTask<Void,Void,Void>
{
String URL="...";
#Override
protected void onPreExecute()
{
super.onPreExecute();
fpd.show(getActivity().getFragmentManager(),"");
}
#Override
protected Void doInBackground(Void... params) {
//...
return null;
}
#Override
protected void onPostExecute(Void avoid)
{
if (getActivity()!= null) {
}
if (fpd.isVisible()) {
fpd.dismissAllowingStateLoss();
}
}
}
And this is the line 245 - FlipProgressDialog. java
#Override
public void onDestroyView() {
Dialog dialog = getDialog();
if (dialog != null && getRetainInstance()) {
dialog.setDismissMessage(null);
}
handler.removeCallbacks(r); // line 245
super.onDestroyView();
}
Apparently, some resources of your FlipProgressDialog are destroyed when you enter onPause(), so calling anything after everything gets destroyed causes that exception. Just try to call fpd.dismissAllowingStateLoss() before super.onPause()

Maintaining list items positions on device rotation in an android fragment

In a fragment I am trying to save the scroll state of the RecyclerView list, but somehow it is not saving the state. As it is a fragment, I am overriding the onSaveInstanceState() and onActivityCreated() methods to save the scroll position. Even tried implementing in onViewStateRestored() method. I saw related some posts on saving the scroll state but it ain't working. Kindly let me know where am I failing. Below is my code:
public class RecipeListFragment extends Fragment
implements RecipeListContract.View {
#BindView(R.id.recipe_list_recycler_view)
RecyclerView mRecipeListRecyclerView;
#BindView(R.id.recipe_list_progress_bar)
ProgressBar mRecipeListProgressBar;
#BindInt(R.integer.grid_column_count)
int mGridColumnCount;
#BindString(R.string.recipe_list_sync_completed)
String mRecipeListSyncCompleted;
#BindString(R.string.recipe_list_connection_error)
String mRecipeListConnectionError;
GridLayoutManager gridLayoutManager;
Parcelable savedRecyclerLayoutState;
Unbinder unbinder;
private static final String SAVED_LAYOUT_MANAGER
= "com.learnwithme.buildapps.bakingapp.ui.recipelist.fragment";
private RecipeListContract.Presenter mRecipeListPresenter;
private RecipeListAdapter mRecipeListAdapter;
public RecipeListFragment() { }
#Nullable
#Override
public View onCreateView(LayoutInflater inflater, #Nullable ViewGroup
container, #Nullable Bundle savedInstanceState) {
View view = inflater.inflate(R.layout.fragment_recipe_list, container,
false);
unbinder = ButterKnife.bind(this, view);
mRecipeListAdapter = new RecipeListAdapter(
getContext(),
new ArrayList<>(0),
recipeId -> mRecipeListPresenter.loadRecipeDetails(recipeId)
);
mRecipeListAdapter.setHasStableIds(true);
gridLayoutManager = new GridLayoutManager(getContext(),
mGridColumnCount);
mRecipeListRecyclerView.setLayoutManager(gridLayoutManager);
mRecipeListRecyclerView.setHasFixedSize(true);
mRecipeListRecyclerView.setAdapter(mRecipeListAdapter);
return view;
}
#Override
public void onPause() {
super.onPause();
mRecipeListPresenter.unsubscribe();
}
#Override
public void onResume() {
super.onResume();
mRecipeListPresenter.subscribe();
}
#Override
public void onSaveInstanceState() { }
#Override
public void onSaveInstanceState(Bundle bundle) {
super.onSaveInstanceState(bundle);
if(bundle != null) {
bundle.putParcelable(SAVED_LAYOUT_MANAGER,

mRecipeListRecyclerView.getLayoutManager().onSaveInstanceState());
}
}

}
}

bundle.getParcelable(SAVED_LAYOUT_MANAGER);
Timber.d("onViewStateRestored savedRecyclerLayoutState=>",

mRecipeListRecyclerView
.getLayoutManager()
.onRestoreInstanceState(savedRecyclerLayoutState);
}
}
#Override
public void onDestroyView() {
super.onDestroyView();
unbinder.unbind();
}
public static RecipeListFragment newInstance() {
return new RecipeListFragment();
}
#Override
public void setPresenter(RecipeListContract.Presenter recipeListPresenter) {
this.mRecipeListPresenter = recipeListPresenter;
}
#Override
public void showRecipeList(List<Recipe> recipeList) {
mRecipeListAdapter.refreshRecipes(recipeList);
}
#Override
public void loadProgressBar(boolean show) {
setViewVisibility(mRecipeListRecyclerView, !show);
setViewVisibility(mRecipeListProgressBar, show);
}
#Override
public void displayCompletedMessage() {
Toast.makeText(getContext(), mRecipeListSyncCompleted,
Toast.LENGTH_SHORT).show();
}
#Override
public void displayErrorMessage() {
Toast.makeText(getContext(), mRecipeListConnectionError,
Toast.LENGTH_SHORT).show();
}
#Override
public void displayRecipeDetails(int recipeId) {
startActivity(RecipeDetailsActivity.prepareIntent(getContext(),
recipeId));
}
private void setViewVisibility(View view, boolean visible) {
if (visible) {
view.setVisibility(View.VISIBLE);
} else {
view.setVisibility(View.INVISIBLE);
}
}
}
I have resolved the issue myself. The problem was to save the scroll position of the device in onSaveInstanceState() and restoring the same in onViewRestored() method.
private Parcelable mRecipeListParcelable;
private int mScrollPosition = -1;
#Override
public void onSaveInstanceState(Bundle bundle) {
super.onSaveInstanceState(bundle);
int scrollPosition = ((GridLayoutManager)
mRecipeListRecyclerView.getLayoutManager())
.findFirstCompletelyVisibleItemPosition();
mRecipeListParcelable = gridLayoutManager.onSaveInstanceState();
bundle.putParcelable(KEY_LAYOUT, mRecipeListParcelable);
bundle.putInt(POSITION, scrollPosition);
}
#Override
public void onViewStateRestored(#Nullable Bundle bundle) {
super.onViewStateRestored(bundle);
if(bundle != null) {
mRecipeListParcelable = bundle.getParcelable(KEY_LAYOUT);
mScrollPosition = bundle.getInt(POSITION);
}
}
Also, in the loadProgress() method I had to set the scrollToPosition() with the scroll position saved.
#Override
public void loadProgressBar(boolean show) {
setViewVisibility(mRecipeListRecyclerView, !show);
setViewVisibility(mRecipeListProgressBar, show);
mRecipeListRecyclerView.scrollToPosition(mScrollPosition);
}
Also, one more thing to remember is that no need to restore anything in onResume() method as the presenter callbacks would get called and the view is reset anyway.

Android: Save XWalkView - Crosswalk state

I am using XWalkView to show a mobile web site as an application. My problem is when application goes background and comes back it reloads the page it shows. I want to keep it state and continue from that state when it comes from background. Here is my code:
public class MainActivity extends AppCompatActivity {
static final String URL = "https://www.biletdukkani.com.tr";
static final int MY_PERMISSIONS_REQUEST_ACCESS_LOCATION = 55;
static final String SHOULD_ASK_FOR_LOCATION_PERMISSION = "shouldAskForLocationPermission";
static final String TAG = "MainActivity";
static final String COMMAND = "/system/bin/ping -c 1 185.22.184.184";
static XWalkView xWalkWebView;
TextView noInternet;
static Bundle stateBundle;
#Override
protected void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) {
super.onCreate(savedInstanceState);
Log.d(TAG, "onCreate");
// Check whether we're recreating a previously destroyed instance
if (savedInstanceState != null) {
// Restore value of members from saved state
stateBundle = savedInstanceState.getBundle("xwalk");
}
setContentView(R.layout.activity_main);
initNoInternetTextView();
}
public void onRestoreInstanceState(Bundle savedInstanceState) {
// Always call the superclass so it can restore the view hierarchy
super.onRestoreInstanceState(savedInstanceState);
stateBundle = savedInstanceState.getBundle("xwalk");
Log.d(TAG, "onRestoreInstanceState");
}
/**

noInternet = (TextView) findViewById(R.id.no_internet);
if (noInternet != null) {
noInternet.setOnClickListener(new View.OnClickListener() {
#Override
public void onClick(View view) {
checkInternetConnection();
}
});
}
}
/**
* WebView'i ayarlar.
*/
private void initWebView() {
Log.d(TAG, "initWebView");
if (xWalkWebView == null) {
ProgressBar progressBar = (ProgressBar) findViewById(R.id.progressBar);
xWalkWebView = (XWalkView) findViewById(R.id.webView);
//xWalkWebView.clearCache(true);
xWalkWebView.load(URL, null);
xWalkWebView.setResourceClient(new BDResourceClient(xWalkWebView, progressBar));
}
}
#Override
protected void onResume() {
super.onResume();
Log.d(TAG, "onResume");
checkLocationPermissions();
checkInternetConnection();
if (xWalkWebView != null && stateBundle != null) {
xWalkWebView.restoreState(stateBundle);
}
}
#Override
protected void onPause() {
super.onPause();
Log.d(TAG, "onPause");
if (xWalkWebView != null) {
stateBundle = new Bundle();
xWalkWebView.saveState(stateBundle);
}
}
public void onSaveInstanceState(Bundle savedInstanceState) {
Log.d(TAG, "onSaveInstanceState");
// Save the user's current game state
savedInstanceState.putBundle("xwalk", stateBundle);
// Always call the superclass so it can save the view hierarchy state
super.onSaveInstanceState(savedInstanceState);
}
#Override
public void onBackPressed() {
Log.d(TAG, "onBackPressed");
if (xWalkWebView != null && xWalkWebView.getNavigationHistory().canGoBack()) {
xWalkWebView.getNavigationHistory().navigate(XWalkNavigationHistory.Direction.BACKWARD, 1);
} else {
super.onBackPressed();
}
}
}
I have also tried to add following lines to manifest but didn't work.
android:launchMode="singleTask"
android:alwaysRetainTaskState="true"
How can i do that?
Thanks in advcance.
One way would be to initialize the view inside a fragment which is set to retain it's instance.

getting IndexOutOfBoundException : Invalid array range 0 to 0 , So context = null, So App crashes

working on InterstitialAd excercise, onClick of a button, calling tellJoke(). tellJoke() calls a AsyncTask .

please help, where am i doing wrong ? and please suggest if other way to do this.
Just provide the parameter for your AsyncTask when you're calling execute (also remove static):
public void tellJoke(View view){
new EndpointsAsyncTask().execute(getActivity());
}
this refers to the activity and thus implements the Context interface (if called from an activity).
EDIT:
Move your tellJoke method to the Fragment and call it like this:
tellJoke();
Notice that now you do not pass this but rather getActivity() since you're in a Fragment.

final FragmentTransaction ft = getChildFragmentManager().beginTransaction();
ft.replace(R.id.youtube_fragment, youTubeVideoPlayerFragment);
ft.commit();
EDIT
I've found out the origin of that error. This is the scenario:
The activity starts. In onCreate() it instantiates a new YouTubeVideoPlayerFragment and initializes YouTube object (which starts the YouTubeServiceEntity internally) in its newInstance() method. Then the YouTube fragment that was instantiated before, is attached with FragmentManager to the corresponding FrameLayout while video is loading.
Here is the issue: If user exits the activity before video had been loaded, the exception is thrown.
So if user want to exit from the activity in that case, what should I do and how? I don't really know what to do!
Once again, do NOT use fragment constructors or factory methods to work with lifecycle or context bound entities. Simply put, such entities can only be used after super.onCreate(...) has been called.
The question now is, when to call the init method?
Here's what YouTubePlayerFragment documentation says:
The YouTubePlayer associated with this fragment will be released whenever its onDestroyView() method is called. You will therefore have to re-call initialize(String, YouTubePlayer.OnInitializedListener) whenever the activity associated with this fragment is recreated, even if the fragment instance is retained across activity re-creation by setting setRetainInstance(boolean).
You may be tempted to put init() in onActivityCreated but that's too late, since onStart was already called and layout already performed.
Counterpart to onDestroyView is onViewCreated and that's the perfect candidate.
#Override
public void onViewCreated(View view, Bundle savedInstanceState) {
super.onViewCreated(view, savedInstanceState);
init();
}
As suggested call setRetainInstance(true) in the fragment's constructor. When the activity is recreated the fragment will not be recreated, only its UI will go through lifecycle events.
I see the same error reported from a Huawei cellphone.
I see an explanation here:
https://github.com/youtube/yt-android-player/issues/23
Not sure if there is a way to catch the exception in our code.
The problem is the initialization of the Youtube fragment. YouTubePlayerSupportFragment has to be extended in a class of yours and overrides some methods. You have to control the screen orientation and the onSaveInstanceState.
public class YouTubePlayerFragment extends YouTubePlayerSupportFragment {
private YouTubePlayer mPlayer;
public static YouTubePlayerFragment newInstance() {
return new YouTubePlayerFragment();

Activity containing Youtube Fragment

}
I could fix this error by using a ProgressDialog to wait until the player is loaded.
