Here I have a nice simple table layout to display the contents of my database.
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?><LinearLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:layout_height="fill_parent"
android:orientation="horizontal">
<TableLayout
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="match_parent"
android:id="#+id/tableLayout1">
<TableRow>
<TextView
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:text="Date"
android:id="#+id/Date"
android:layout_weight="0.3333"
/>
<TextView
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:text="Systolic"
android:id="#+id/Systolic"
android:layout_weight="0.3333"
android:textAlignment="center" />
<TextView
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:text="Diastolic"
android:id="#+id/Diastolic"
android:layout_weight="0.3333" />
</TableRow>
<TableRow>
<TextView
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:id="#+id/DateInfo"
android:layout_weight="0.3333"
/>
<TextView
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:id="#+id/SystolicInfo"
android:layout_weight="0.3333"
android:textAlignment="center" />
<TextView
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:id="#+id/DiastolicInfo"
android:layout_weight="0.3333" />
</TableRow>
</TableLayout>
Here is the method that is called in the onCreate of the calling activity:
private View buildView() {
//CardBuilder card = new CardBuilder(this, CardBuilder.Layout.MENU);
//card.setText("It worked!!!");
CardBuilder previousReadings = new CardBuilder(this, CardBuilder.Layout.EMBED_INSIDE);
previousReadings.setEmbeddedLayout(R.layout.blood_pressures);
TextView tv = (TextView) findViewById(R.id.SystolicInfo);
//tv.setText("Why won't this work?");
MyDatabase info = new MyDatabase(this);
info.open();
String data = info.getData();
info.close();
System.out.println(data);
//tv.setText(data);
return previousReadings.getView();
//return card.getView();
}
}
I used the CarBuilder object card that was a simple card without an embedded layout and this worked fine. I then commented it out and tried implementing the embedded card which also works fine (above). However the problem arises when I try to tv.setText(). Whether this is just a constant or the "data" variable. The logcat reads "unable to load Activity:... null pointer exception.
Can anybody shed some light on the problem? I have tried EditTexts as well as TextViews and neither work. Thanks in advance.
Use previousReadings.getView() call findViewById to access TextView from Card:
....
System.out.println(data);
View view= previousReadings.getView();
TextView tv = (TextView)view.findViewById(R.id.SystolicInfo);
tv.setText("Why won't this work?");
return view;

I am in a weird situation in my existing project. In my project i want to inflate one layout over the other as a stack dynamically. At present in my project i managed to show the layouts one below the other vertically by appending them, this approach has been chosen by me because even though i am trying to show it as stack only one image is appearing at the front during runtime instead of a bunch. In order to understand my problem please go through the following image links and code

}
#Override
public int getCount() {
return 10;
}
}
Note
You need to modify as per your requirement.
Try FrameLayout in your parent layout. Set different margins in child views to achive an effect of stack.
Child views are drawn in a stack, with the most recently added child on top

As per your response :
hi thank you for your response ur response actually worked. But now i am dealing with another situation where-in i would like to update details based on swipe for eg: if a card is swiped right it should be gestured as like where as if a card is swiped left it should be gestured as dislike so how to actually code these swipe gestures can you please help me out
#ashwin for that you should have a like and dislike drawable or a custom view.
card.setOnCardDimissedListener(new CardModel.OnCardDismissedListener() {
#Override
public void onLike() {
Log.d("Swipeable Card", "I liked it");
}
#Override
public void onDislike() {
Log.d("Swipeable Card", "I did not liked it");
}
});
Use above snippet to show or hide the view of like or dislike in respective methods that is onLike() and onDislike().
Edit 1:
I figured out the problem what you are facing, If you are simply implementing the Sample Code. Then it clearly shows that CardContainer has SimpleCardStackAdapter as adapter and CardModel are added to it using new operator. Except the last element of CardModel that is added separately and cardModel Listener is applied on last element only. If you want to apply it on all elements. Then you should have to add the elements to SimpleCardStackAdapter by ArrayList of CardModel.
For example. There is picture on the top of the screen below that there are some empty boxes and below the boxes there are some buttons. Every button has a character for text("a","c","t"). You click on a button and the button's text appear in the box. You can click them in the order you want to but the answer is "cat" so when you put the characters in the correct order then you got a toast.
I tried to do it with TextViews and Buttons. I can make the button disappear when i click on it and a textview appear in the same time. But every textview has a fix place on the screen, so i need to put every character in every box invisible and when i click on the "c" character it appear in the first box and the other "c" characters stay invisible. But if i click on the "a" first, then it appears in the second box because there is too much variation to do all. I'm not good at explaining but if anyone has an idea how to do that easier please response!

You might want to try a slightly different approach.
If I understand you correctly, you want to "type" a word out using given lettered buttons. Like one of those hangman style games.
Why not append the text views on the fly.
Something like
#Override
public void onClick(View v) {
//Grab the surrounding layout for the textviews
GridView answerGrid = (GridView)getViewById(R.id.answerGrid);
//Get the text that was on the button
Button b = (Button)v;
String btnText = b.getText().toString();
//Make a text view with text
TextView txt = new TextView();
text.setText(btnText);
//Append to text view container
answerGrid.addView(txt);
//Invisible button
b.setVisibility(View.INVISIBLE);
}
Haven't tested to see if this is perfect, but its a start.
=====
I've looked at your xml
Why not use GridViews?
<RelativeLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
xmlns:tools="http://schemas.android.com/tools"
....>
<GridView android:id="#+id/answerGrid"
....>
<!-- Put nothing here. This is for answers -->
</GridView>
<GridView android:id="#+id/lettersGrid"
android:layout_below="answerGrid"
....>
<!-- Buttons in here -->
</GridView>
</RelativeLayout>
This way you can customise the number of rows/columns based on the length of the word you're playing with. And GridView will automatically give you a neat layout and spacing.
Have a look at the GridView doc and get it customised the way you want it.
See my edits above for the Java code.
I am trying to implement a ListView, inside a RelativeLayout. However when I call the setAdapter() function it claims that the ListView does not exist (but there are not compilation errors).
Below is the java code:
FrameLayout framecxpesq = (FrameLayout)findViewById(R.id.layoutSearch);
ViewGroup janelapesquisa = (ViewGroup)getLayoutInflater().inflate(R.layout.janela_multisearch, null);
ListView listapesquisa = (ListView)findViewById(R.id.listViewOcorrencias);
HashMap<String,String> mapaOcorrencias1 = new HashMap<String,String>();
mapaOcorrencias1.put("pagina", "pag 1");
mapaOcorrencias1.put("resultados", "3 results found");
HashMap<String,String> mapaOcorrencias2 = new HashMap<String,String>();
mapaOcorrencias2.put("pagina", "pag 7");
mapaOcorrencias2.put("resultados", "15 resultados encontrados");
HashMap<String,String> mapaOcorrencias3 = new HashMap<String,String>();
mapaOcorrencias3.put("pagina", "pag 9");
mapaOcorrencias3.put("resultados", "10 asgsdgsdfge3333");
ArrayList<HashMap<String,String>> listamapas = new ArrayList<HashMap<String,String>>();
listamapas.add(mapaOcorrencias1);
listamapas.add(mapaOcorrencias2);
listamapas.add(mapaOcorrencias3);
if(tv_pesquisa.isSelected()){
tv_pesquisa.setSelected(false);
tv_pesquisa.setImageResource(R.drawable.search_icon);
framecxpesq.removeAllViews();
}
else{
tv_pesquisa.setSelected(true);
tv_pesquisa.setImageResource(R.drawable.search_icon_sel);
framecxpesq.addView(janelapesquisa);
listapesquisa.setAdapter(new SimpleAdapter(this,listamapas,R.layout.linha_ocorrencia,new String[]{"pagina","resultados"},new int[]{R.id.linha_item,R.id.linha_subitem}));
}
Below is XML code. One XML file defines janela_multisearch, other contains the FrameLayout layoutSearch, in which the janela_multisearch is inserted.

The problem seems that linhapesquisa is not being found...
What is this error?
You need to get the ListView from its parent View, as the layout where it is defined is not set as the layout of the Activity. Only calling findViewById() will only search in the layout of the Activity.
ViewGroup janelapesquisa = (ViewGroup)getLayoutInflater().inflate(R.layout.janela_multisearch, null);
ListView listapesquisa = (ListView) janelapesquisa.findViewById(R.id.listViewOcorrencias);
Same with the other Views that are in this Layout.
I'm doing the Extra Credit section of the Adding a List section in Android Tutorials. I tried populating the AutoCompleteTextView (ACTV) with the items contained in the ArrayAdapter, but if the addr field has characters in it above the threshold limit, the list doesn't show any items. Here is the code:
public class MyActivity extends Activity
{
List<Restaurant> model = new ArrayList<Restaurant>();
ArrayAdapter<Restaurant> adapter = null;
/** Called when the activity is first created. */
#Override
public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState)
{
super.onCreate(savedInstanceState);
setContentView(R.layout.main);
Button save = (Button)findViewById(R.id.save);
save.setOnClickListener(onSave);
ListView list = (ListView)findViewById(R.id.restaurants);
adapter = new ArrayAdapter<Restaurant>(this,
android.R.layout.simple_list_item_1,
model);
list.setAdapter(adapter);
AutoCompleteTextView textView = (AutoCompleteTextView)findViewById(R.id.addr);
textView.setAdapter(adapter);
}
private View.OnClickListener onSave= new View.OnClickListener(){
...
};
}
And the XML...

Changing the completionThreshold changes the number of characters I can enter before the items in the List disappear.
Thanks for the help
You are attempting to use the same adapter for both the ListView and the AutoCompleteTextView. That is not a good idea. Please use separate adapters. You might even want a separate layout for the adapter used with the AutoCompleteTextView (e.g., android.R.layout.simple_dropdown_item_1line, as I used in this sample project).
I am trying to add an edit text view dynamically to a layout from the java class. However from what I have implemented nothing changes on my action. This is what I have:
public final void onCreate(final Bundle i){
int value = 0;
isEdit = false;
try
{
super.onCreate(i);
this.setContentView(R.layout.contactedit);
ContactList.soundIndicator = 0;
etPhoneNumber = new ArrayList<EditText>();
this.etPhoneNumber.add((EditText) this.findViewById(R.id.etPhoneNumberInput));
this.addNumberBtn = (Button) this.findViewById(R.id.addNumberEditText);
addNumberBtn.setOnClickListener(new View.OnClickListener() {
public void onClick(View v) {
//etPhoneNumber.add(new EditText(ContactEdit.this));
try{
LinearLayout layout = (LinearLayout) findViewById(R.id.contacteditll);
EditText temp = new EditText(ContactEdit.this);
temp.setLayoutParams(new LayoutParams(LayoutParams.FILL_PARENT,
LayoutParams.WRAP_CONTENT));
etPhoneNumber.add(temp);
layout.addView(temp);
}catch(Exception e){
Log.d(TAG, "Failed to create new edit text");
}
}
});
}
This is the xml:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<LinearLayout
xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:baselineAligned="true"
android:orientation="vertical"
android:id="#+id/contacteditll"
android:background="#drawable/darkimg">
<TextView
android:id="#+id/titlePrint"
android:layout_width="fill_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:text="#string/titlePrompt"
/>
<Spinner
android:id="#+id/spContactTitle"
android:layout_width="fill_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:prompt="#string/titlePrompt"
/>
<TextView
android:text="#string/namePrint"
android:id="#+id/namePrint"
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content">
</TextView>
<EditText android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:hint="#string/returnName"
android:id="#+id/etFirstNameInput"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_toRightOf= "#+id/namePrint">
</EditText>
<TextView
android:text="#string/secondPrint"
android:id="#+id/secondPrint"
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content">
</TextView>
<EditText android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:hint="#string/returnName"
android:id="#+id/etSecondNameInput"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_toRightOf= "#+id/namePrint">
</EditText>
<TextView android:id="#+id/numberPrint"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:text="#string/numberPrint">
</TextView>
<EditText android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:id="#+id/etPhoneNumberInput"
android:hint="#string/returnNumber">
</EditText>
<Button android:id="#+id/addNumberEditText"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:freezesText="true"
android:editable="false"
android:text="ADD"
/>
<include
android:id="#+id/customedittext"
layout="#layout/myedittext"/>
<TextView android:id="#+id/emailPrint"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:text="#string/emailPrint">
</TextView>
<EditText android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:id="#+id/etEmailAddressInput"
android:hint="#string/returnEmail">
</EditText>
<Button
android:freezesText="true"
android:editable="false"
android:layout_gravity="center"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:id="#+id/btnSaveButton"
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:text="#string/save"
android:layout_below="#+id/emailInput"
/>
</LinearLayout>
Whenever I click on my button the action is heard but nothing is done. The layout of the page does not change even though the new edit text is in my list of edit texts and I am adding the new edit text to the layout.
Any help would be appreciated thanks.
It sure gets added but you are not seeing it cause there is no space left. Two things to test:
Place the LinearLayout inside a ScrollView.
Use the weight parameter.
Using the weight parameter:
EditText temp = new EditText(ContactEdit.this);
LinearLayout.LayoutParams params = new LinearLayout.LayoutParams(LayoutParams.FILL_PARENT,
LayoutParams.WRAP_CONTENT, 1);
temp.setLayoutParams(params);
