I tried making an app using this tutorial (example 2). I created a navigation drawer activity.

The problem is that it is showing a scrollable screen that only fills up space of 1 card instead of the whole screen:
As you can see in my xml and java, I've tried some things to fix this, but unfortunately I'm out of ideas.
Try changing
LinearLayout.LayoutParams.MATCH_PARENT,LinearLayout.LayoutParams.MATCH_PARENT
to
LinearLayout.LayoutParams.WRAP_CONTENT,LinearLayout.LayoutParams.MATCH_PARENT
Ok. The solution was pretty simple. The problem was fixed by removing the scrollview from the xml

The card list view automatically becomes scrollable after a certain amount of items.
And the following lines weren't necessary any more:

Earlier on I asked a question about how to reach the last item of a scrollview and someone pointed out that I should be using NestedScrollView, at first it worked but now it's not what I want.
I want to fit my list of item in the ScrollView so only that part of the screen can be scrolled and the other parts stay at their place (the 3 TextView)

The problem is that the item are covering the whole screen instead of staying in the parent container (ScrollView) :
How can I fit my list of item to stay in the parent ?
If this is your actual code, then it might help to set constraints to the text views too.
Also, if your ScrollView has a fixed height, then you should remove either the top or bottom constraint. So if you want it to stick to the bottom, remove the top constraint.
I solved this with removing the ScrollView and using a ListView
Hi I have a ScrollView and a vertical LinearLayout inside that. Inside each LinearLayout slot I have a horizonal LinearLayout that holds 2 things a word and a number. The problem is some of the words are hidden?? and it takes up half the screen. Thanks for any help.

You could try to set the weight of each "item" to 1 so they will equally divide the space on the screen. Something like the snippet below:

LinearLayout.LayoutParams lp;
lp.weight = 1;
ll.setLayoutParams(lp);
You could also ditch that logic and use a ListView with a custom adapter like I did on this answer, or setup a RecyclerView as you can see on this blog post. It's way easier and more efficient to do either one of those.

obviously not a profound question, but I think theres probably an error in my approach.
So I've added the file listview.xml to my project in the layout folder.

This keeps breaking with the error:
...java.lang.RunTimeException: content must have a ListView whose id attribute is 'android.R.id.list'
I noticed that if I comment out the setContentView(R.layout.footer_view) bit the error disappears, which is quite confusing as well, because it seems like the error should trigger before there.
This is confusing the hell out of me because as far as I can tell this element exists. Its seems like maybe I'm missing a step to load the ListView? I'm banging my head against the wall here and this seems like something really basic, and being a n00b sucks...So any help is much appreciated!

For an Activity that is extending ListActivity, the ListView needs to exist within the xml file that you are using in the activity, in your case that's the footer_view file.
Taken from the Google Dev Site - "ListActivity has a default layout that consists of a single, full-screen list in the center of the screen. However, if you desire, you can customize the screen layout by setting your own view layout with setContentView() in onCreate(). To do this, your own view MUST contain a ListView object with the id "#android:id/list""
To incorporate your footer below your list, try this:

That is exactly what I have in my app.
Then in your onCreate(), just this:

Man, now I see your problem. Not a big deal here. Let's look at your code (edited to be shorter). The onCreate() method has this:

Do you see R.layout.activity_main anywhere there? There's your issue! Your R.layout.footer_view only contains a textview, it doesn't contain the ListView, and your Activity keeps looking for the ListView that you promised it that you'd have by extending a ListActivity.
Try this - change your onCreate() method to this:

super.onCreate(savedInstanceState);

you are trying to get the id from the layouts and not from the ids.

If I understand correctly, you want 2 seperate rows of images.
So we need a base LinerLayout with a vertical orientation to hold each row, while each row consists of a LinerLayout with a horizontal orientation:
