Even after coding it, I'm not able to see toggle button in the preview. Am I missing something?
I want to implement navigation drawer on that toggle button, it will open from right to left and on again clicking it it will close.
Below is my code:
public class entryActivity extends ActionBarActivity {
private String[] mMenuItems;
private DrawerLayout mDrawerLayout;
private ListView mDrawerList;
private ActionBarDrawerToggle actionBarDrawerToggle;
private CharSequence mDrawerTitle;
private CharSequence mTitle;
#Override
protected void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) {
super.onCreate(savedInstanceState);
setContentView(R.layout.activity_entry);
//https://developer.android.com/training/implementing-navigation/nav-drawer.html
mMenuItems = getResources().getStringArray(R.array.menu_items);
mDrawerLayout = (DrawerLayout) findViewById(R.id.drawer_layout);
mDrawerList = (ListView) findViewById(R.id.left_drawer);
// Set the adapter for the list view
mDrawerList.setAdapter(new ArrayAdapter<String>(this,
android.R.layout.simple_list_item_1, mMenuItems));
ActionBar actionBar = getSupportActionBar();
actionBar.setHomeButtonEnabled(true);
actionBarDrawerToggle = new ActionBarDrawerToggle(
this,
mDrawerLayout,
R.string.open,
R.string.close
){
public void onDrawerClosed(View view) {
super.onDrawerClosed(view);
getActionBar().setTitle(mTitle);
invalidateOptionsMenu(); // creates call to onPrepareOptionsMenu()
}
/** Called when a drawer has settled in a completely open state. */
public void onDrawerOpened(View drawerView) {
super.onDrawerOpened(drawerView);
getActionBar().setTitle(mDrawerTitle);
invalidateOptionsMenu(); // creates call to onPrepareOptionsMenu()
}
};
mDrawerLayout.setDrawerListener(actionBarDrawerToggle);
}
#Override
public boolean onOptionsItemSelected(MenuItem item) {
// Handle action bar item clicks here. The action bar will
// automatically handle clicks on the Home/Up button, so long
// as you specify a parent activity in AndroidManifest.xml.
int id = item.getItemId();
if(actionBarDrawerToggle.onOptionsItemSelected(item)){
return true;
}
//noinspection SimplifiableIfStatement
if (id == R.id.action_settings) {
return true;
}
return super.onOptionsItemSelected(item);
}
}
set this in onCreate method.
actionBar.setDisplayHomeAsUpEnabled(true);
actionBar.setHomeButtonEnabled(true);
Try adding setDisplayHomeAsUpEnabled() just like the way you setHomeButtonEnabled()
For Hamburger menu option: http://codetheory.in/android-navigation-drawer/
You need to call actionBarDrawerToggle.syncState():
#Override
protected void onPostCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) {
super.onPostCreate(savedInstanceState);
// Sync the toggle state after onRestoreInstanceState has occurred.
mDrawerToggle.syncState();
}

I have this nav drawer which was working perfectly fine.
Refactoring my code I removed all onOptionsItemSelecteds in activities and made all activities inherit from a base activity which extends AppComplatActivity and implements all the necessary methods.
After this clicking on hamburger icon does not work any more even though I have syncstate() and every thing.
Any clues why this is not working?
One of the activities:
public class MainActivity extends BaseActivity implements SearchFilterFragment.OnFragmentInteractionListener {
NavigationView navigationView;
DrawerLayout drawerLayout;
private Tracker mTracker;
#Override
protected void onResume() {
super.onResume();
drawerLayout.openDrawer(GravityCompat.START);
}
#Override
protected void onPostResume() {
super.onPostResume();
mTracker.setScreenName("MainActivity" + "-----");
mTracker.send(new HitBuilders.ScreenViewBuilder().build());
}
#Override
protected void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) {
super.onCreate(savedInstanceState);
setContentView(R.layout.activity_main);
getWindow().getDecorView().setLayoutDirection(View.LAYOUT_DIRECTION_RTL);
drawerLayout = (DrawerLayout) findViewById(R.id.drawer_layout);
drawerLayout.openDrawer(GravityCompat.START);
navigationView = (NavigationView) findViewById(R.id.navigation_view_primary);
navigationView.setNavigationItemSelectedListener(new NavigationDrawerListener(this));
setupToolbar();
Haftdong application = (Haftdong) getApplication();
mTracker = application.getDefaultTracker();
}
private void setupToolbar() {
// Show menu icon
final ActionBar actionBar = getSupportActionBar();
actionBar.setDisplayHomeAsUpEnabled(true);// will make the icon clickable and add the < at the left of the icon.
DrawerLayout mDrawerLayout = (DrawerLayout) findViewById(R.id.drawer_layout);
ActionBarDrawerToggle mDrawerToggle = new ActionBarDrawerToggle(this, mDrawerLayout, R.string.navigation_drawer_open, R.string.navigation_drawer_close);
mDrawerLayout.setDrawerListener(mDrawerToggle);
mDrawerToggle.syncState();//for hamburger icon
}
#Override
public void onFragmentInteraction(Uri uri) {
}
}
BaseActivity:
public class BaseActivity extends AppCompatActivity {
#Override
protected void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) {
super.onCreate(savedInstanceState);
}
#Override
public boolean onCreateOptionsMenu(Menu menu) {
// Inflate the menu; this adds items to the action bar if it is present.
getMenuInflater().inflate(R.menu.menu_base, menu);
return true;
}
#Override
public boolean onOptionsItemSelected(MenuItem item) {
// Handle action bar item clicks here. The action bar will
// automatically handle clicks on the Home/Up button, so long
// as you specify a parent activity in AndroidManifest.xml.
int id = item.getItemId();
//noinspection SimplifiableIfStatement
if (id == R.id.action_settings) {
return true;
}
return super.onOptionsItemSelected(item);
}
}
You're using the four-parameter constructor for ActionBarDrawerToggle, which means you'll have to call the toggle's onOptionsItemSelected() method in MainActivity's onOptionsItemSelected() override in order to open/close the drawer.
For example:
#Override
public boolean onOptionsItemSelected(MenuItem item) {
if(mDrawerToggle.onOptionsItemSelected(item)) {
return true;
}
return super.onOptionsItemSelected(item);
}
If you happen to be providing your own Toolbar – e.g., as the support ActionBar (though it's not necessary to set it as such) – then you can instead pass that Toolbar as the third argument in the ActionBarDrawerToggle constructor call. For example:
Toolbar toolbar = findViewById(R.id.toolbar);
ActionBarDrawerToggle mDrawerToggle = new ActionBarDrawerToggle(this, drawerLayout,
toolbar, R.string.navigation_drawer_open, R.string.navigation_drawer_close);
The drawer opening/closing will then be handled by ActionBarDrawerToggle internally, and you won't need to call through to the toggle in onOptionsItemSelected().
The setDisplayHomeAsUpEnabled() call is also unnecessary for this setup, which is handy if you don't want to set the Toolbar as the ActionBar.
I have created a drawer toggle on my android app. It is shown on the top-left of the screen. When I click the toggle, a list view items will be shown on the left side.
Below screen is the home screen:
when I click the toggle, it will be shown as below:
Now I want to change the icon of the toggle button by below code:
mDrawerToggle.setHomeAsUpIndicator(R.drawable.ic_drawer);
mDrawerToggle.setDrawerIndicatorEnabled(false);
The toggle icon is changed to my drawable but the listview items will not be shown when I click the toggle. I wonder why changing the toggle icon disable the toggle click.
Below is my activity class:
public class MainActivity extends AppCompatActivity {
private DrawerLayout mDrawerLayout;
private ListView mDrawerList;
private ActionBarDrawerToggle mDrawerToggle;
private String[] mPlanetTitles;
#Override
protected void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) {
super.onCreate(savedInstanceState);
setContentView(R.layout.activity_main);
getSupportActionBar().setDisplayHomeAsUpEnabled(true);
getSupportActionBar().setHomeButtonEnabled(true);
getSupportActionBar().setDisplayShowTitleEnabled(false);
mDrawerLayout = (DrawerLayout) findViewById(R.id.drawer_layout);
mDrawerList = (ListView) findViewById(R.id.left_drawer);
mPlanetTitles = getResources().getStringArray(R.array.planets_array);
// Set the adapter for the list view
mDrawerList.setAdapter(new ArrayAdapter<String>(this,
R.layout.drawer_list_item, mPlanetTitles));
mDrawerList.setOnItemClickListener(new DrawerItemClickListener());
mDrawerToggle = new ActionBarDrawerToggle(
this, /* host Activity */
mDrawerLayout,
R.string.drawer_open, /* "open drawer" description for accessibility */
R.string.drawer_close /* "close drawer" description for accessibility */
) {
public void onDrawerClosed(View view) {
invalidateOptionsMenu(); // creates call to onPrepareOptionsMenu()
}
public void onDrawerOpened(View drawerView) {
invalidateOptionsMenu(); // creates call to onPrepareOptionsMenu()
}
};
mDrawerToggle.setHomeAsUpIndicator(R.drawable.ic_drawer);
// mDrawerToggle.setDrawerIndicatorEnabled(false);
mDrawerLayout.addDrawerListener(mDrawerToggle);
}
#Override
public boolean onOptionsItemSelected(MenuItem item) {
if(mDrawerToggle.onOptionsItemSelected(item)) {
return true;
}
return super.onOptionsItemSelected(item);
}
#Override
protected void onPostCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) {
super.onPostCreate(savedInstanceState);
// Sync the toggle state after onRestoreInstanceState has occurred.
mDrawerToggle.syncState();
}
#Override
public void onConfigurationChanged(Configuration newConfig) {
super.onConfigurationChanged(newConfig);
// Pass any configuration change to the drawer toggls
mDrawerToggle.onConfigurationChanged(newConfig);
}
/* The click listner for ListView in the navigation drawer */
private class DrawerItemClickListener implements ListView.OnItemClickListener {
#Override
public void onItemClick(AdapterView<?> parent, View view, int position, long id) {
}
}
}
The v7 ActionBarDrawerToggle really only does two things: it opens/closes the drawer, and it provides the hamburger icon and its animation. Calling setDrawerIndicatorEnabled(false) will remove its icon, but it also disables the toggle. If you don't want that icon, then you're better off just not using ActionBarDrawerToggle, and handling opening/closing the drawer yourself.
First, remove all of your code for the ActionBarDrawerToggle.
Then set your desired icon with getSupportActionBar().setHomeAsUpIndicator().
In onOptionsItemSelected(), if the MenuItem's ID is android.R.id.home, open or close the drawer as appropriate.
Lastly, the DrawerLayout.DrawerListener functionality of the ActionBarDrawerToggle can be replaced with a basic SimpleDrawerListener.
public class MainActivity extends AppCompatActivity {
private DrawerLayout mDrawerLayout;
private ListView mDrawerList;
private String[] mPlanetTitles;
#Override
protected void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) {
super.onCreate(savedInstanceState);
setContentView(R.layout.activity_main);
getSupportActionBar().setDisplayHomeAsUpEnabled(true);
getSupportActionBar().setDisplayShowTitleEnabled(false);
mDrawerLayout = (DrawerLayout) findViewById(R.id.drawer_layout);
mDrawerList = (ListView) findViewById(R.id.left_drawer);
mPlanetTitles = getResources().getStringArray(R.array.planets_array);
// Set the adapter for the list view
mDrawerList.setAdapter(new ArrayAdapter<String>(this,
R.layout.drawer_list_item, mPlanetTitles));
mDrawerList.setOnItemClickListener(new DrawerItemClickListener());
// *** Set your desired icon
getSupportActionBar().setHomeAsUpIndicator(R.drawable.ic_drawer);
// *** Replace the DrawerListener functionality of the ActionBarDrawerToggle
mDrawerLayout.addDrawerListener(new DrawerLayout.SimpleDrawerListener() {
#Override
public void onDrawerClosed(View view) {
invalidateOptionsMenu(); // creates call to onPrepareOptionsMenu()
}
#Override
public void onDrawerOpened(View drawerView) {
invalidateOptionsMenu(); // creates call to onPrepareOptionsMenu()
}
}
);
}
#Override
public boolean onOptionsItemSelected(MenuItem item) {
// *** If the home button is clicked, open/close the drawer as needed
if (item.getItemId() == android.R.id.home) {
if (mDrawerLayout.isDrawerOpen(GravityCompat.START)) {
mDrawerLayout.closeDrawer(GravityCompat.START);
}
else {
mDrawerLayout.openDrawer(GravityCompat.START);
}
return true;
}
return super.onOptionsItemSelected(item);
}
#Override
protected void onPostCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) {
super.onPostCreate(savedInstanceState);
}
#Override
public void onConfigurationChanged(Configuration newConfig) {
super.onConfigurationChanged(newConfig);
}
/* The click listner for ListView in the navigation drawer */
private class DrawerItemClickListener implements ListView.OnItemClickListener {
#Override
public void onItemClick(AdapterView<?> parent, View view, int position, long id) {
}
}
}
Use syncState() after changing the icon of the toggle button.
mDrawerToggle.setHomeAsUpIndicator(R.drawable.ic_drawer);
mDrawerToggle.setDrawerIndicatorEnabled(false);
mDrawerToggle.syncState();

I created navigation drawer in my main activity.When i click on navigation drawer item,i am launching fragment in my main activity.if click on navigation drawer icon again,drawer is overlappng with fragment.
i want to detach fragment when i open navigation drawer second time.

Take a look at remove(android.app.Fragment) or popBackStackImmediate()
I assume you want something like:
...
public void onDrawerOpened(View drawerView) {
getActionBar().setTitle(mTitle);
//remove the fragment or pop it form the stack when you open the drawer?
getFragmentManager().popBackStackImmediate();
}
...
Hi,The below code will help you
#Override
public boolean onOptionsItemSelected(MenuItem item) {
// TODO Auto-generated method stub
if (item.getItemId() == android.R.id.home) {
// If the drawer is open, close it; vice versa
if (mDrawerLayout.isDrawerOpen(mDrawerList)) {
mDrawerLayout.closeDrawer(mDrawerList);
} else {
mDrawerLayout.openDrawer(mDrawerList);
}
}
return super.onOptionsItemSelected(item);
}
Working from this android example, I've attempted to create an app that uses the support version (android.support.v4 and android.support.v7).
The example creates a menu drawer that looks like this
and my code gets this
Notice the icon is different and the way it moves is different, well in my version it doesn't move.
Example code
public class MainActivity extends Activity {
private DrawerLayout mDrawerLayout;
private ListView mDrawerList;
private ActionBarDrawerToggle mDrawerToggle;
private CharSequence mDrawerTitle;
private CharSequence mTitle;
private String[] mPlanetTitles;
#Override
protected void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) {
super.onCreate(savedInstanceState);
setContentView(R.layout.activity_main);
mTitle = mDrawerTitle = getTitle();
mPlanetTitles = getResources().getStringArray(R.array.planets_array);
mDrawerLayout = (DrawerLayout) findViewById(R.id.drawer_layout);
mDrawerList = (ListView) findViewById(R.id.left_drawer);
// set a custom shadow that overlays the main content when the drawer opens
mDrawerLayout.setDrawerShadow(R.drawable.drawer_shadow, GravityCompat.START);
// set up the drawer's list view with items and click listener
mDrawerList.setAdapter(new ArrayAdapter<String>(this,
R.layout.drawer_list_item, mPlanetTitles));
mDrawerList.setOnItemClickListener(new DrawerItemClickListener());
// enable ActionBar app icon to behave as action to toggle nav drawer
getActionBar().setDisplayHomeAsUpEnabled(true);
getActionBar().setHomeButtonEnabled(true);
// ActionBarDrawerToggle ties together the the proper interactions
// between the sliding drawer and the action bar app icon
mDrawerToggle = new ActionBarDrawerToggle(
this, /* host Activity */
mDrawerLayout, /* DrawerLayout object */
R.drawable.ic_drawer, /* nav drawer image to replace 'Up' caret */
R.string.drawer_open, /* "open drawer" description for accessibility */
R.string.drawer_close /* "close drawer" description for accessibility */
) {

Does anyone know why its not using my toggle icon or moving? Or is it that you can't do it like that using the support libraries?
I'm still investigating what I missed and will update this answer accordingly. Though as #kaedill mentions it is possible using the support libraries.
Here is a full copy of the Google example, edited by myself to use the support libraries.
public class MainActivity extends ActionBarActivity {
private DrawerLayout mDrawerLayout;
private ListView mDrawerList;
private ActionBarDrawerToggle mDrawerToggle;
private CharSequence mDrawerTitle;
private CharSequence mTitle;
private String[] mPlanetTitles;

mDrawerLayout.setDrawerShadow(R.drawable.drawer_shadow, GravityCompat.START);
// set up the drawer's list view with items and click listener
mDrawerList.setAdapter(new ArrayAdapter<String>(this,
R.layout.drawer_list_item, mPlanetTitles));
mDrawerList.setOnItemClickListener(new DrawerItemClickListener());
// enable ActionBar app icon to behave as action to toggle nav drawer

I have tested this and it works as it should on a Gingerbread device.
I am going to go through the changes in my app and figure out what I did wrong.
Update
After a painful dissection of my original code, I ported my code into the working example and a diff showed my error.
#Override
protected void onPostCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) {
super.onPostCreate(savedInstanceState);
// Sync the toggle state after onRestoreInstanceState has occurred.
mDrawerToggle.syncState();
}
My original code had not overridden the onPostCreate method. An annoying little bug to find! Hope it helps someone else out in the future.
You can do it with the support libraries. The only difference I can see from my working version with the ActionbarActivity is a call to super like this:
public void onDrawerClosed(View drawerView)
{
super.onDrawerClosed(drawerView);
getSupportActionBar().setTitle(mTitle);
supportInvalidateOptionsMenu(); // creates call to onPrepareOptionsMenu()
Log("onDrawerOpened()");
}
public void onDrawerOpened(View drawerView) {
super.onDrawerOpened(drawerView);
getSupportActionBar().setTitle(mDrawerTitle);
supportInvalidateOptionsMenu(); // creates call to onPrepareOptionsMenu()
Log("onDrawerOpened()");
}
Did you copy the ic_drawer drawable from the example to your project? I think yes because the code should no compile without that drawable, but when I've implemented DrawerLayout in my app, I had to copy that drawable inside my resources.
