How to add OnClickListner to CardView? - android

I am working with RecyclerView and CardView. I want to attach OnClickListner to each card. I tried with many answers available on stackoverflow, but they are not working for me. So far I have tried -

As one can see, I have tried setOnClickListener with both onCreateViewHolder and onBindViewHolder, also as separate onClick, but none of them seems to be working for me. So, I want to know, How to add OnClickListner to CardView?

View returned by onClick does not necessarily correspond to View row hierarchy of the recycler view.
I think you should modify onBindViewHolder with

If you use long click then replace View.OnClickListener with View.OnLongClickListener and onClick with onLongClick.

Put the setOnClickListener-method inside the constructor of your ViewHolder class.

Set OnClickListener to itemView in RecyclerView.ViewHolder constructor, also you can fetch position of cardView using getAdapterPosition() method which can help you to pass the data to new activity using putExtra method of intent. doc for getAdapterPosition method

If you really want to implement onclick listener then do the following
add a View object in your ViewHolderClass and initialize it to the itemView recieved in the constructor
2.setOnClickListener to the view object you declared(in ViewHolder) onBindViewHolder in the Adapter class
this will work for the entire cardView

Has anyone using RecyclerView found a way to set an onClickListener to items in the RecyclerView?
I thought of setting a listener to each of the layouts for each item but that seems a little too much hassle
I'm sure there is a way for the RecyclerView to listen for the onClick event but I can't quite figure it out.

As the API's have radically changed, It wouldn't surprise me if you were to create an OnClickListener for each item. It isn't that much of a hassle though. In your implementation of RecyclerView.Adapter<MyViewHolder>, you should have:

This was so hard for me to have on item click listener in the activity and also to have click listener for single view of the item that will not trigger on item click listener. After playing around with Jacob Tabak's answer I respect his answer for on item click if no other touch actions inside item are presented.
I have a custom OnClickListener interface that have on item click event which holds the clicked item's view and the item position from the adapter. I present an instance of it in the constructor(or it can be with setter) and attach it to the view holder container click listener.
I also have other click listener in the Adapter(Can be in the view holder) which will handle current View click from the container.

Here is what I did. This solution supports both onClick and onLongClick on both RecyclerView Items and Views insides RecyclerView Items (internal views).

A variant with getChildPosition also works. Please note that for the internal views, in onClick() use :

To my mind, the avantage of this solution is that when one clicks on the image, only the onclick() image listener is called whereas when I combined Jacob's solution for a RecyclerView Item view and my solution for internal views the RecyclerView Item view onclick() is also called (when click on image).
There is far easier way to do this. Just apply on click in onBindViewHolder on root view.

All the answers posted so far are great solutions, however if you do not want to deal with too many implementation details, and just want it to work similarly to how ListView does, I would recommend using TwoWay-View, as seen here:

Note that this implementation also supports long press on items, as well as support for pressed states (which is something important that other solutions to this question lack).
If you don't want to use the entire library, take a look at the ClickItemTouchListener class, which can be used as a standalone if needed. The only issue I found with it at the moment is with long press + scrolling, it seems to have incorrect behaviour.

From most of the answers above, they seem to be setting their onclicklisteners to individual items. However, the solution am about to offer is very simple but yet not intuitive to many. Many are forgetting that the other components are always in a parent component which is used to display items in the List or Recycler views. This solution is just about setting a single onclick listener to this parent view and the turn is played. The solution also includes a way to pass the position of the item being clicked on from the list or recycler view. Here, our main rootview is a CardView from the android support library. Unfortunately RecyclerView is missing a couple of features that ListView had built-in.
For example the ability to add an OnItemClickListener that triggers when an item is clicked.
RecyclerView allows you to set an OnClickListener in your adapter, but passing on that click

I am not going to include here the code from google's ootb the demo project, but I'll outline the main design approaches in the sample provided by google:
the item OnClickListener is created ONLY ONCE, and is assigned to a field in your RecyclerView.Adapter implementation.
in the onBindViewHolder() you should set the same, pre-created onClickListener object on your ViewHolder instance with holder.itemView.setOnClickListener(mOnClickListener) (AVOID creating a new instance on every method call!); if you need to capture clicks on some specific elements inside the ViewHolder then extend ViewHolder and expose the elements you need as fields so that you can attach whatever listeners you need in onBindViewHolder() — and once again, do NOT re-create the listeners on every method call — initialise them as instance fields and attach them as needed.
you can use .setTag() in order to pass state to your viewHolder, e.g. holder.itemView.setTag(mValues.get(position)); as used in the demo.
I'm aware there are a lot of answers, but I thought I might just provide my implementation of it as well. (Full details can be found on another question I answered).
So, to add a click listener, your inner ViewHolder class needs to implement View.OnClickListener. This is because you will set an OnClickListener to the itemView parameter of the ViewHolder's constructor. Let me show you what I mean:

Where should I use OnClickListner in firebase adapter? [duplicate]

Has anyone using RecyclerView found a way to set an onClickListener to items in the RecyclerView?
I thought of setting a listener to each of the layouts for each item but that seems a little too much hassle
I'm sure there is a way for the RecyclerView to listen for the onClick event but I can't quite figure it out.

As the API's have radically changed, It wouldn't surprise me if you were to create an OnClickListener for each item. It isn't that much of a hassle though. In your implementation of RecyclerView.Adapter<MyViewHolder>, you should have:

This was so hard for me to have on item click listener in the activity and also to have click listener for single view of the item that will not trigger on item click listener. After playing around with Jacob Tabak's answer I respect his answer for on item click if no other touch actions inside item are presented.
I have a custom OnClickListener interface that have on item click event which holds the clicked item's view and the item position from the adapter. I present an instance of it in the constructor(or it can be with setter) and attach it to the view holder container click listener.
I also have other click listener in the Adapter(Can be in the view holder) which will handle current View click from the container.

To my mind, the avantage of this solution is that when one clicks on the image, only the onclick() image listener is called whereas when I combined Jacob's solution for a RecyclerView Item view and my solution for internal views the RecyclerView Item view onclick() is also called (when click on image).
There is far easier way to do this. Just apply on click in onBindViewHolder on root view.

All the answers posted so far are great solutions, however if you do not want to deal with too many implementation details, and just want it to work similarly to how ListView does, I would recommend using TwoWay-View, as seen here:

Note that this implementation also supports long press on items, as well as support for pressed states (which is something important that other solutions to this question lack).
If you don't want to use the entire library, take a look at the ClickItemTouchListener class, which can be used as a standalone if needed. The only issue I found with it at the moment is with long press + scrolling, it seems to have incorrect behaviour.

From most of the answers above, they seem to be setting their onclicklisteners to individual items. However, the solution am about to offer is very simple but yet not intuitive to many. Many are forgetting that the other components are always in a parent component which is used to display items in the List or Recycler views. This solution is just about setting a single onclick listener to this parent view and the turn is played. The solution also includes a way to pass the position of the item being clicked on from the list or recycler view. Here, our main rootview is a CardView from the android support library. Unfortunately RecyclerView is missing a couple of features that ListView had built-in.
For example the ability to add an OnItemClickListener that triggers when an item is clicked.
RecyclerView allows you to set an OnClickListener in your adapter, but passing on that click

I am not going to include here the code from google's ootb the demo project, but I'll outline the main design approaches in the sample provided by google:
the item OnClickListener is created ONLY ONCE, and is assigned to a field in your RecyclerView.Adapter implementation.
in the onBindViewHolder() you should set the same, pre-created onClickListener object on your ViewHolder instance with holder.itemView.setOnClickListener(mOnClickListener) (AVOID creating a new instance on every method call!); if you need to capture clicks on some specific elements inside the ViewHolder then extend ViewHolder and expose the elements you need as fields so that you can attach whatever listeners you need in onBindViewHolder() — and once again, do NOT re-create the listeners on every method call — initialise them as instance fields and attach them as needed.
you can use .setTag() in order to pass state to your viewHolder, e.g. holder.itemView.setTag(mValues.get(position)); as used in the demo.
I'm aware there are a lot of answers, but I thought I might just provide my implementation of it as well. (Full details can be found on another question I answered).
So, to add a click listener, your inner ViewHolder class needs to implement View.OnClickListener. This is because you will set an OnClickListener to the itemView parameter of the ViewHolder's constructor. Let me show you what I mean:

Has anyone using RecyclerView found a way to set an onClickListener to items in the RecyclerView?
I thought of setting a listener to each of the layouts for each item but that seems a little too much hassle

This was so hard for me to have on item click listener in the activity and also to have click listener for single view of the item that will not trigger on item click listener. After playing around with Jacob Tabak's answer I respect his answer for on item click if no other touch actions inside item are presented.
I have a custom OnClickListener interface that have on item click event which holds the clicked item's view and the item position from the adapter. I present an instance of it in the constructor(or it can be with setter) and attach it to the view holder container click listener.
I also have other click listener in the Adapter(Can be in the view holder) which will handle current View click from the container.

To my mind, the avantage of this solution is that when one clicks on the image, only the onclick() image listener is called whereas when I combined Jacob's solution for a RecyclerView Item view and my solution for internal views the RecyclerView Item view onclick() is also called (when click on image).

All the answers posted so far are great solutions, however if you do not want to deal with too many implementation details, and just want it to work similarly to how ListView does, I would recommend using TwoWay-View, as seen here:

Note that this implementation also supports long press on items, as well as support for pressed states (which is something important that other solutions to this question lack).
If you don't want to use the entire library, take a look at the ClickItemTouchListener class, which can be used as a standalone if needed. The only issue I found with it at the moment is with long press + scrolling, it seems to have incorrect behaviour.

From most of the answers above, they seem to be setting their onclicklisteners to individual items. However, the solution am about to offer is very simple but yet not intuitive to many. Many are forgetting that the other components are always in a parent component which is used to display items in the List or Recycler views. This solution is just about setting a single onclick listener to this parent view and the turn is played. The solution also includes a way to pass the position of the item being clicked on from the list or recycler view. Here, our main rootview is a CardView from the android support library. Here is sample code

Unfortunately RecyclerView is missing a couple of features that ListView had built-in.
For example the ability to add an OnItemClickListener that triggers when an item is clicked.
RecyclerView allows you to set an OnClickListener in your adapter, but passing on that click
listener from your calling code, to the adapter and to the ViewHolder, is complicated
for catching a simple item click.

I am not going to include here the code from google's ootb the demo project, but I'll outline the main design approaches in the sample provided by google:
the item OnClickListener is created ONLY ONCE, and is assigned to a field in your RecyclerView.Adapter implementation.
in the onBindViewHolder() you should set the same, pre-created onClickListener object on your ViewHolder instance with holder.itemView.setOnClickListener(mOnClickListener) (AVOID creating a new instance on every method call!); if you need to capture clicks on some specific elements inside the ViewHolder then extend ViewHolder and expose the elements you need as fields so that you can attach whatever listeners you need in onBindViewHolder() — and once again, do NOT re-create the listeners on every method call — initialise them as instance fields and attach them as needed.
you can use .setTag() in order to pass state to your viewHolder, e.g. holder.itemView.setTag(mValues.get(position)); as used in the demo.
I'm aware there are a lot of answers, but I thought I might just provide my implementation of it as well. (Full details can be found on another question I answered).
So, to add a click listener, your inner ViewHolder class needs to implement View.OnClickListener. This is because you will set an OnClickListener to the itemView parameter of the ViewHolder's constructor. Let me show you what I mean:

RecyclerView causes issue when recycling

I have a list of items that I created using RecyclerView. When the user clicks on one of them I change the background color of that selected item.
The problem is, when I scroll through my items, and they get recycled, some of the items get the selected item's background color (which is wrong).

The problem is recyclerView recycling behavior which assign your out of screen ViewHolder items to new items coming to be displayed on screen.
I would not suggest you to bind your logic based on ViewHolder object as in all above answers. It will really cause you problem.
You should build logic based on the state of your data object not ViewHolder Object as you will never know when it gets recycled.
Suppose you save a
state boolean isSelected in ViewHolder to check, but and if it is true, then the same state will be there for new Item when this viewHolder will be recycled.
Better way to do above is holding the any state in DataModel object. In your case just a boolean isSelected.

If you only have to maintain selected Item state, I strongly discourage use of notifyDataSetChanged() method of Adapter class as RecyclerView provides much more flexibility for these cases.
You should modify your logic assign the value inside the item (object) not the view:

Explained answer: when the system recycles a viewholder it just calls onBindViewHolder method so if you have changed anything of that viewholder you'll have to reset it. This will happen if you change background, item's position, etc. Any change that is not related to content per se should be reset in that method

Problems with OnClick to remove item from within Adapter

I am new to using recyclerview and adapters. I have the RecyclerView and an Onclick working (thanks to Google: https://github.com/googlesamples/android-RecyclerView). It does have an setOnClickListener which writes to the Log. But I'm trying to figure out how to remove an item from the list when it is clicked - I can't figure out how to get to the ArrayList which the adapter is using and run notifyItemInserted to update the display.
In reviewing another post (Android RecyclerView addition & removal of items - Android RecyclerView addition & removal of items) it looks like paradite/Jared Burrows were able to get it running. But some of the code appears to be missing and I was hoping that someone could fill in the holes for me. (I couldn't comment on this other post to ask the question there).
For example, I don't see that mItemClickListener is defined anywhere. I'm also not sure of the connection between the class which extends the RecyclerView.Adapter and the class which extends the RecyclerView.ViewHolder.

From what I can understand you're having trouble knowing which item has been clicked? So you need the getPosition() method.
My advice would be to use the setTag() method of views, where the tag will be the position of the feed item in your list. It should look something like this:

public void onBindViewHolder(ViewHolder viewHolder, final int position) {
Log.d(TAG, "Element " + position + " set.");
viewHolder.getTextView()
.setText(String.valueOf(feedItemList.get(position)));
viewHolder.getRemoveIcon().setTag(position);
}
After this create an onClickListener like this:

public void onClick(View v) {
int position = (Integer)v.getTag();
feedItemList.remove(position);
notifyItemRemoved(position);
}
For this to work you can make the adapter extend the View.OnClickListener, that way you have access to the array and to the notify methods.
Ok, I got it to work. Instead of having the ViewHolder be a "public static class" I needed to make it just "public class". Then I was able to modify my arraylist directly from the setOnClickListener block:
