I am using the new NavigationView from revision 22.2.0 of the support library by Google. It works perfectly fine to generate a navigation drawer populated using a menu res.
I was wondering is it possible to add a ListView or RecyclerView to the navigation drawer so that it can be populated using my custom adapter code, which allows for far greater flexibility than menu resources.
Here is my current XML:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<android.support.v4.widget.DrawerLayout
android:id="#+id/drawer_layout"
xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
xmlns:app="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res-auto"
xmlns:tools="http://schemas.android.com/tools"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="match_parent"
android:fitsSystemWindows="true"
tools:context=".MainActivity">
<FrameLayout
android:id="#+id/content_view"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="match_parent"
android:orientation="vertical">
<include layout="#layout/main_toolbar" />
</FrameLayout>
<android.support.design.widget.NavigationView
android:id="#+id/navigation_view"
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="match_parent"
android:layout_gravity="start"
app:headerLayout="#layout/navigation_drawer_header"
app:menu="#menu/menu_navigation_drawer" />
</android.support.v4.widget.DrawerLayout>
Where in my XML would I add the ListView or RecyclerView?
EDIT
As per Basant's suggestion, I nested a ListView into the NavigationView. You lose the ability to inflate from a menu res (as far as I know) but it succeeds in what I want it to do. The header XML is unchanged, it is just included into XML.
New code:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<android.support.v4.widget.DrawerLayout
android:id="#+id/drawer_layout"
xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
xmlns:tools="http://schemas.android.com/tools"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="match_parent"
android:fitsSystemWindows="true"
tools:context=".MainActivity">
<FrameLayout
android:id="#+id/content_view"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="match_parent"
android:orientation="vertical">
<include layout="#layout/main_toolbar" />
</FrameLayout>
<android.support.design.widget.NavigationView
android:id="#+id/navigation_view"
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="match_parent"
android:layout_gravity="start">
<RelativeLayout
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="match_parent">
<include
android:id="#+id/navigation_drawer_header_include"
layout="#layout/navigation_drawer_header" />
<ListView
android:id="#+id/navigation_drawer_list"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="match_parent"
android:layout_below="#id/navigation_drawer_header_include"/>
</RelativeLayout>
</android.support.design.widget.NavigationView>
</android.support.v4.widget.DrawerLayout>
You can just nest the ListView or RecyclerView inside the NavigationView.
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<android.support.v4.widget.DrawerLayout
android:id="#+id/drawer_layout"
xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
xmlns:app="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res-auto"
xmlns:tools="http://schemas.android.com/tools"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="match_parent"
android:fitsSystemWindows="true"
tools:context=".MainActivity">
<FrameLayout
android:id="#+id/content_view"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="match_parent"
android:orientation="vertical">
<include layout="#layout/main_toolbar" />
</FrameLayout>
<android.support.design.widget.NavigationView
android:id="#+id/navigation_view"
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="match_parent"
android:layout_gravity="start"/>
<ListView
android:id="#+id/menuList"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="match_parent"/>
</android.support.v4.widget.DrawerLayout>
NOTE: Keep in mind that if you use use a ListView inside it, you can't use the NavigationView's header. You will have to use the header view of the ListView that you are adding. Don't forget to remove the app:menu and app:header fields.
If you want to adding views inside the NavigationView you can do something like this. This way you have no restriction of adding Header on your NavigtionView with ListView.
<android.support.v4.widget.DrawerLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
xmlns:app="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res-auto"
xmlns:tools="http://schemas.android.com/tools"
android:id="#+id/drawer_layout"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="match_parent"
android:fitsSystemWindows="true"
tools:openDrawer="start">
<include
layout="#layout/app_bar_main"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="match_parent" />
<android.support.design.widget.NavigationView
android:id="#+id/nav_view"
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="match_parent"
android:layout_gravity="start"
android:fitsSystemWindows="false"
>
<LinearLayout
android:orientation="vertical"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="match_parent">
<include layout="#layout/nav_header_main"
android:id="#+id/my"
/>
<ListView
android:layout_weight="7"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="0dp"
android:id="#+id/list_view_inside_nav"></ListView>
</LinearLayout>
</android.support.design.widget.NavigationView>
</android.support.v4.widget.DrawerLayout>
That look something like this
In response to Shubham's comment
This will not scroll the header view like the Navigation View does
I solved it by putting the LinearLayout inside a NestedScrollView. Now it scrolls properly with the header.
<android.support.v4.widget.NestedScrollView
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="match_parent">
<LinearLayout
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="match_parent"
android:orientation="vertical">
<include layout="#layout/nav_header_main" />
<android.support.v7.widget.RecyclerView
android:id="#+id/nav_list"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="#dimen/weight_based_height"
android:layout_weight="1"
android:nestedScrollingEnabled="false"/>
</LinearLayout>
</android.support.v4.widget.NestedScrollView>
Try this way
<android.support.design.widget.NavigationView
android:id="#+id/navigation"
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="match_parent"
android:layout_gravity="start"
android:fitsSystemWindows="true">
<LinearLayout
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="match_parent"
android:orientation="vertical">
<include layout="#layout/nav_header" />
<ListView
android:id="#+id/lst_menu_items"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="0dp"
android:layout_weight="1" />
</LinearLayout>

I have RecyclerView as the page's content, then I added drawer navigation. The drawer navigation works just fine. But the page's content got move up a little, so that leaves some text covered by ActionBar. I tried using layout_marginTop to move it down a little, and it worked. But I'm not sure what's causing everything to ignore ActionBar's position.
Here's my XML file:
<androidx.drawerlayout.widget.DrawerLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
xmlns:app="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res-auto"
xmlns:tools="http://schemas.android.com/tools"
android:id="#+id/drawer_layout"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="match_parent"
tools:context=".NothingActivity"
tools:openDrawer="start">
<androidx.recyclerview.widget.RecyclerView
android:id="#+id/recycler"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="match_parent"
android:background="#android:color/darker_gray"
android:scrollbars="vertical" />
<LinearLayout
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="match_parent"
android:orientation="vertical">
<androidx.appcompat.widget.Toolbar
android:id="#+id/toolbar"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="?attr/actionBarSize"
android:background="#color/colorPrimary"
app:popupTheme="#style/Theme.AppCompat.Light"
android:elevation="4dp" />
<FrameLayout
android:id="#+id/fragment_container"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="match_parent" />
</LinearLayout>
<com.google.android.material.navigation.NavigationView
android:id="#+id/nav_view"
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="match_parent"
android:layout_gravity="start"
app:headerLayout="#layout/nav_header"
app:menu="#menu/drawer_menu"/>
</androidx.drawerlayout.widget.DrawerLayout>
you can try a small hack. You can add marginTop to your recyclerView which is equal to the height of your ActionBar (by default it's 56dp). This will shift your recyclerView below the ActionBar. You can add some extra margin if you want.
Hope it helps.
Change the order of Recyclerview and Toolbar, moreover delete fragment_container

My NavigationView is displayed behind the page content. So I tried to use bringToFronton my NavigationView : the page content goes behind the NavigationView, BUT becomes unclickable/unscrollable (page content is a recyclerView with multiple items).
How can I handle both NavigationView and page content ?
Even when the NavigationView is closed, the RecyclerView is unclickable/unscrollable

I think that I am going for a good way, but I Can do that the Navigation Drawer when I display it, this is not above the Bottom Bar, it is behind, so How can I do it? I need the Navigation Drawer up of the Bottom Bar.
This is my code, I hope you can help me, thanks n.n

</android.support.v4.widget.DrawerLayout>
There are two possible solutions to your problem.
It's quite easy. Give your BottomNavigationView a certain height, let's say 56dp and then give this as marginBottom of NavigationView.
Keep it as it is. Just assign your DrawerLayout's property layout_above="#+id/bottom_navigation.
for me the bottom navigation fails to be positioned at bottom until I try this code
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<android.support.v4.widget.DrawerLayout
xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
xmlns:app="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res-auto"
android:id="#+id/drawer_layout"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="match_parent"
>
<RelativeLayout
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="match_parent"
android:orientation="vertical"
>
<android.support.design.widget.CoordinatorLayout
android:id="#+id/container"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="match_parent"
>
<include
layout="#layout/toolbar"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content" />
<FrameLayout
android:id="#+id/frame_container"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="match_parent"
app:layout_behavior="#string/appbar_scrolling_view_behavior" />
<android.support.design.widget.BottomNavigationView
android:id="#+id/navigation"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_gravity="bottom"
android:background="?android:attr/windowBackground"
app:itemBackground="#color/bgBottomNavigation"
android:foreground="?attr/selectableItemBackground"
app:itemIconTint="#android:color/white"
app:itemTextColor="#android:color/white"
app:menu="#menu/navigation" />
</android.support.design.widget.CoordinatorLayout>
</RelativeLayout>
<android.support.design.widget.NavigationView
android:id="#+id/nvView"
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="match_parent"
android:layout_gravity="start"
android:background="#android:color/white"
app:menu="#menu/drawer_view" />
So you can give it try!

for his answer
I have an AppCompatActivity with this layout:
<android.support.v4.widget.DrawerLayout
xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
xmlns:app="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res-auto"
xmlns:tools="http://schemas.android.com/tools"
android:id="#+id/drawer_layout"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="match_parent"
tools:openDrawer="start">
<android.support.design.widget.CoordinatorLayout
android:id="#+id/main_frame"
android:fitsSystemWindows="true"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="match_parent">
<include
layout="#layout/app_bar_main"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="match_parent" />
<FrameLayout
android:id="#+id/content_frame"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="match_parent"
android:layout_centerInParent="true" />
</android.support.design.widget.CoordinatorLayout>
<android.support.design.widget.NavigationView
android:id="#+id/nav_view"
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="match_parent"
android:layout_gravity="start"
android:fitsSystemWindows="true"
app:headerLayout="#layout/nav_header_main"
app:menu="#menu/activity_main_drawer" />
</android.support.v4.widget.DrawerLayout>
Now I wanna navigate to a Fragment. The fragment is properly loaded, but I can't see the ActionBar. I can open the drawer via the gesture.
I'm a bit puzzled about this, since I only replace the content_frame. Also if I place something else there, for example an FloatingActionButton, it will also be displayed in the fragment.
Layout Fragment:
<LinearLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
android:orientation="vertical"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="match_parent"
android:background="?android:windowBackground">
<LinearLayout
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="match_parent"
android:orientation="vertical"
android:layout_marginLeft="7dp"
android:layout_marginRight="7dp">
....
</LinearLayout>
</LinearLayout>
I am using this example of material design navigation drawer,the issue is,when i open my drawer,it covers my action bar too..and my drawer icon is not visible..this is the what i am getting..and following is my code..
<android.support.v4.widget.DrawerLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
xmlns:app="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res-auto"
xmlns:tools="http://schemas.android.com/tools"
android:id="#+id/drawer_layout"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="match_parent">
<LinearLayout
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="match_parent"
android:orientation="vertical">
<LinearLayout
android:id="#+id/container_toolbar"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:orientation="vertical">
<include
android:id="#+id/toolbar"
layout="#layout/toolbar" />
</LinearLayout>
<FrameLayout
android:id="#+id/container_body"
android:layout_width="fill_parent"
android:layout_height="0dp"
android:layout_weight="1" />
</LinearLayout>
<fragment
android:id="#+id/fragment_navigation_drawer"
android:name="info.androidhive.materialdesign.activity.FragmentDrawer"
android:layout_width="#dimen/nav_drawer_width"
android:layout_height="match_parent"
android:layout_gravity="start"
app:layout="#layout/fragment_navigation_drawer"
tools:layout="#layout/fragment_navigation_drawer" />
</android.support.v4.widget.DrawerLayout>
I would suggest to use a linear layout with vertical orientation as parent and then the first child is your toolbar and the second your drawer layout.
linearlayout vertical
toolbar
drawerlayout
Hope this helps.
Whatever you have in android.support.v4.widget.DrawerLayout will be covered by Navigation drawer. See that you have your toolbar in android.support.v4.widget.DrawerLayout, so it is below navigation drawer. All you have to do is keep it out of android.support.v4.widget.DrawerLayout. These are all views, so design your layout in such a way that your toolbar is above android.support.v4.widget.DrawerLayout and its subviews.
However I should state that after Android 5.0 Lollipop, according to material guidelines, the navigation drawer is supposed to go over toolbar. But it is in no way necessary for you to do.
Here is an example layout
(However, understanding the theory part is necessary as you can create any type of layout after that)
<RelativeLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
xmlns:app="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res-auto"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="match_parent"
android:fitsSystemWindows="true">
<android.support.v7.widget.Toolbar
android:id="#+id/toolbar"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="56dp"
android:layout_gravity="start"
android:background="#android:color/transparent"
android:minHeight="?attr/actionBarSize"
app:popupTheme="#style/ThemeOverlay.AppCompat.Light"
app:theme="#style/toolBarStyle"
app:titleTextAppearance="#style/Toolbar.TitleText" />
<android.support.v4.widget.DrawerLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
xmlns:app="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res-auto"
