Android : Integrating Navigation Drawer giving null object reference error - android

I am working on an Android application in which I am trying to integrate Navigation Drawer. Now, the project is divided into 2 parts, one is Users and one is Restaurants. Both are different projects, so both have different APK and all.
Now, the drawer for User works just fine. I used the same code for the Restaurant, and it is throwing me an error. i have no idea why. So basically, I created a Drawer Layout activity and extended activity in that class. And whereever I want a drawer, I am extending the DrawerLayoutActivity class, instead of normal activity, and adding the list and android drawer layout in XML. It worked in User. Here is the relevant code :
Error log :

So, what exactly is wrong. Any help wouöld be nice. Thanks a lot. :-)
Update XML file incase necessary :
<android.support.v4.widget.DrawerLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
android:id="#+id/restaurant_drawer_layout"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="match_parent">
<LinearLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
xmlns:tools="http://schemas.android.com/tools"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="match_parent"
android:gravity="top|center"
android:orientation="vertical"
tools:context=".MainActivity">
<Button
android:id="#+id/BtnSelectImg"
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:text="Insert Image" />
<Button
android:id="#+id/uploadImageButton"
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_gravity="center_horizontal"
android:text="Upload restImage" />
<ImageView
android:id="#+id/ImgPhoto"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="match_parent"
android:src="#drawable/ic_launcher" />
<Button
android:id="#+id/up"
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:text="Upload Image" />
</LinearLayout>
<ListView
android:id="#+id/restaurant_list_slidermenu"
android:layout_width="240dp"
android:layout_height="match_parent"
android:layout_gravity="start"
android:choiceMode="singleChoice"
android:dividerHeight="1dp" />
</android.support.v4.widget.DrawerLayout>

You try to invoke the setDisplayHomeAsUpEnabled(boolean) function on the actionbar without having set an actionbar.
I suggest creating a new layout just for the toolbar. This is an example using the support library.
toolbar.xml
<android.support.v7.widget.Toolbar xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
xmlns:app="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res-auto"
android:id="#+id/toolbar"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:elevation="4dp"
android:background="?attr/colorPrimary"
app:theme="#style/ThemeOverlay.AppCompat.Dark.ActionBar"
app:popupTheme="#style/ThemeOverlay.AppCompat.Light" />
Modify the attributes to fit your needs.
In the next step you include this layout in your restaurant_drawerlayout.xml file like this:
<include layout="#layout/toolbar" />
This way you can use the same toolbar layout file in all of your layouts.
Then in your set(String[] navMenuTitles, TypedArray navMenuIcons) do the following:
Toolbar toolbar = (Toolbar) findViewById(R.id.toolbar);
setSupportActionBar(toolbar);
After doing so you can get the Actionbar using
getSupportActionBar()
and should be good to go.

Use this one..
getActionBar().setBackgroundDrawable(new ColorDrawable(Color.parseColor("#DCDCDC")));
Further customization using styles refer developer site
Please try to Add Only two Statement:
ActionBar actionBar = getActionBar();
actionBar.setBackgroundDrawable(new ColorDrawable(Color.RED));
This will definitely change your title bar color.
Hope this will helpful to you.
you cannot write code for set color for title bar.
get xml file in view object and apply color on it.
check your versions targetSdkVersion above API 11 only support theme customizations.
<uses-sdk android:minSdkVersion="7" android:targetSdkVersion="13" />
The correct answer above seems to giving null value and making application crash, if you want to use the theme for whole application same, then go to your Application Manifest and change/add as the following:
<application
android:allowBackup="true"
android:icon="#mipmap/ic_launcher"
android:label="MY APP"
android:roundIcon="#mipmap/ic_launcher_round"
android:supportsRtl="true"
android:theme="#style/AppTheme"
tools:replace="android:label">
In the above code "android:theme="#style/AppTheme" declares theme for your application.
#style/Apptheme must match from the value of styles.xml, which looks like:
<resources>
<!-- Base application theme. -->
<style name="AppTheme" parent="Theme.AppCompat.Light.DarkActionBar">
<!-- Customize your theme here. -->
<item name="colorPrimary">#color/colorPrimary</item>
<item name="colorPrimaryDark">#color/colorPrimaryDark</item>
<item name="colorAccent">#color/colorAccent</item>
</style>
</resources>

First sahre your xml file for navigation drawer. Any way Looks like you are using tranparent background for navigation drawer. Chnage opacity of your navigation drawer and
I had same issue and i resolved it by replacing
android.R.id.content
to
R.id.container.
You are replacing PreferenceFragment in SettingsFragment's onCreateView why?? According to your code you are replacing SettingsFragment with PreferenceFragment which is static, and not destroying or removing, avoid static member functions, classes and variables in your code, because they have globally available anywhere in your code. Go through your code and edit your question

android: navigation drawer click issue

I am working on an app which has drawer layout with fragments.
There is a textview too which says signout in the drawer.
The issue is the signout works well initially. But when i switch to different activity and return back to previous activity then on opening the drawer, signout becomes unclickable as in the content below the drawer is getting clicked instead of signout.
The basic code for drawer layout is
public class MainActivity extends ActionBarActivity {
private DrawerLayout mDrawerLayout;
private LinearLayout drawer_linear;
private ListView mDrawerList;
private ActionBarDrawerToggle mDrawerToggle;
// nav drawer title
private CharSequence mDrawerTitle;
// used to store app title
private CharSequence mTitle;
// slide menu items
private String[] navMenuTitles;
private TypedArray navMenuIcons;
private ArrayList<NavDrawerItem> navDrawerItems;
private NavDrawerListAdapter adapter;
public static final String TAG = "FeedTag";
#Override
protected void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) {
super.onCreate(savedInstanceState);
setContentView(R.layout.activity_main);
drawer_linear = (LinearLayout) findViewById(R.id.drawer_linear);
findViewById(R.id.sign_out_button).setOnClickListener(new View.OnClickListener() {
#Override
public void onClick(View v) {
//Do Something
}
});
mTitle = mDrawerTitle = getTitle();
// load slide menu items
navMenuTitles = getResources().getStringArray(R.array.nav_drawer_items);
// nav drawer icons from resources

How to add an image header in navigation drawer layout

I am trying to apply an image header in my listview in the drawer layout.This is what i got so far.
However on clicking on Notifications,it opens School Fragment.Clicking on School opens Whats's hot fragment.
The problem is when inserting the image header which acts as part of the listview.
I need to apply it as a header.
This is the current code i am using:
Java:
View header=getLayoutInflater().inflate(R.layout.header, null);
ImageView pro=(ImageView)header.findViewById(R.id.profile_image);
pro.setOnClickListener(new OnClickListener() {
#Override
public void onClick(View arg0) {
// TODO Auto-generated method stub
Toast.makeText(getApplicationContext(), "Clicked", Toast.LENGTH_SHORT).show();
}
});
mDrawerList.addHeaderView(header);
XML:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<FrameLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content" >
<RelativeLayout
android:id="#+id/RelativeLayout1"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="80dp"
android:background="#drawable/header" >
<TextView
android:id="#+id/textView1"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="match_parent"
android:layout_alignParentTop="true"
android:layout_margin="5dp"
android:layout_toRightOf="#+id/profile_image"
android:gravity="center_vertical"
android:text="Welcome to Snappy"
android:textAppearance="?android:attr/textAppearanceLarge"
android:textColor="#FFFFFF"
android:textStyle="bold" />
<ImageView
android:id="#+id/profile_image"
android:layout_width="50dp"
android:layout_height="50dp"
android:layout_alignParentLeft="true"
android:layout_centerVertical="true"
android:background="#drawable/icon"
android:layout_margin="5dp"
android:gravity="center_vertical" />
</RelativeLayout>
</FrameLayout>

EDIT:
activity_main
<android.support.v4.widget.DrawerLayout
xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
android:id="#+id/drawer_layout"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="match_parent">
<!-- Framelayout to display Fragments -->
<FrameLayout
android:id="#+id/frame_container"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="match_parent" />
<ListView
android:id="#+id/list_slidermenu"
android:layout_width="240dp"
android:layout_height="match_parent"
android:layout_gravity="start"
android:choiceMode="singleChoice"
android:divider="#color/list_divider"
android:dividerHeight="1dp"
android:listSelector="#drawable/list_selector"
android:background="#color/list_background"/>
</android.support.v4.widget.DrawerLayout>
All I needed to do was just add +1 in my position when clicking an item. This will add one more position which was taken by the header. Like this:
public void onItemClick(AdapterView parent, View view, int position, long id) {
// display view for selected nav drawer item
displayView(position+1);
}
I would suggest you to create a ListData.xml and set your the one item view of XML there such as image - text in a tablerow. Than set your ListAdapter to that ListData you've created. Then you should be having 0 issues with this.
You just set ItemClick and set the things you want to see as selected position.

Create A Slider Menu of ListView in Android

I have to create a slider menu .That when get clicked it opens a list view on the Left Side.On click of the list view item i want to open new activity .How can we do this in a simple .I am beginner so i just want to do this in a simple way.
I have searched on Google i got many examples but i am not able to get the idea how could i do this.
Please help to get a start and achieve this requirement .Thanks
Here is Your Complete Code.
In the activity_main.xml
<android.support.v4.widget.DrawerLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
android:id="#+id/drawer_layout"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="match_parent" >
<!-- The main content view -->
<FrameLayout
android:id="#+id/content_frame"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="match_parent" />
<!-- The navigation drawer -->
<ListView
android:id="#+id/drawer_list"
android:layout_width="240dp"
android:layout_height="match_parent"
android:layout_gravity="start"
android:background="#111"
android:choiceMode="singleChoice"
android:divider="#android:color/transparent"
android:dividerHeight="0dp" />
</android.support.v4.widget.DrawerLayout>
Then Create a drawer_list_item.xml
<TextView xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
android:id="#android:id/text1"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:background="?android:attr/activatedBackgroundIndicator"
android:gravity="center_vertical"
android:minHeight="?android:attr/listPreferredItemHeightSmall"
android:paddingLeft="16dp"
android:paddingRight="16dp"
android:textAppearance="?android:attr/textAppearanceListItemSmall"
android:textColor="#fff" />
Then In the Main Activity
public class MainActivity extends Activity {
// Within which the entire activity is enclosed
private DrawerLayout mDrawerLayout;
// ListView represents Navigation Drawer
private ListView mDrawerList;
// ActionBarDrawerToggle indicates the presence of Navigation Drawer in the action bar
private ActionBarDrawerToggle mDrawerToggle;
// Title of the action bar

// Creating an ArrayAdapter to add items to the listview mDrawerList
ArrayAdapter<String> adapter = new ArrayAdapter<String>(getBaseContext(),
R.layout.drawer_list_item, getResources().getStringArray(R.array.menus));
// Setting the adapter on mDrawerList
mDrawerList.setAdapter(adapter);
// Enabling Home button
getActionBar().setHomeButtonEnabled(true);
// Enabling Up navigation
getActionBar().setDisplayHomeAsUpEnabled(true);
// Setting item click listener for the listview mDrawerList
mDrawerList.setOnItemClickListener(new OnItemClickListener() {
#Override
public void onItemClick(AdapterView<?> parent, View view,
int position, long id) {
// Getting an array of rivers
String[] menuItems = getResources().getStringArray(R.array.menus);
// Currently selected river
mTitle = menuItems[position];
// Closing the drawer
mDrawerLayout.closeDrawer(mDrawerList);
}
});
}
protected String getUrl(int position) {
switch (position) {
case 0:
return "";
case 1:
return "";
case 2:
return "";
case 3:
return "";
case 4:
return "";
case 5:
return "";
case 6:

default:
return "";
}
}
#Override

super.onPostCreate(savedInstanceState);
mDrawerToggle.syncState();
}
#Override
public boolean onOptionsItemSelected(MenuItem item) {
if (mDrawerToggle.onOptionsItemSelected(item)) {
return true;
}
return super.onOptionsItemSelected(item);
}
/** Called whenever we call invalidateOptionsMenu() */
#Override
public boolean onPrepareOptionsMenu(Menu menu) {
// If the drawer is open, hide action items related to the content view
boolean drawerOpen = mDrawerLayout.isDrawerOpen(mDrawerList);
menu.findItem(R.id.action_settings).setVisible(!drawerOpen);
return super.onPrepareOptionsMenu(menu);
}
#Override
public boolean onCreateOptionsMenu(Menu menu) {
getMenuInflater().inflate(R.menu.main, menu);
return true;
}
}
This is best and simple way to create a Slider Menu
Look up NavigationDrawer in the Google developer docs. This is exactly what you are looking for, and is the proper "Google" way of doing this. Combine that with a simple ListView and you're good to go!
