You are using android.support.v4.app.ActionBarDrawerToggle instead of android.support.v7.app.ActionBarDrawerToggle.
android.support.v4.app.ActionBarDrawerToggle is deprecated so use new ActionBarDrawerToggle by importing android.support.v7.app.ActionBarDrawerToggle.
You also have to remove the R.drawable.ic_drawer argument when you define mDrawerToggle
I have also faced this issue. Back arrow is showing because you are using ActionBar with new Appcompat ActionBarDrawerToggle instead of Toolbar.
Try replacing
mDrawerToggle = new ActionBarDrawerToggle(
getActivity(), /* host Activity */
mDrawerLayout, /* DrawerLayout object */
R.drawable.ic_drawer, /* nav drawer image to replace 'Up' caret */
R.string.navigation_drawer_open, /* "open drawer" description for accessibility */
R.string.navigation_drawer_close /* "close drawer" description for accessibility */
)
with
mDrawerToggle = new ActionBarDrawerToggle(
getActivity(),
mDrawerLayout,
R.string.navigation_drawer_open,
R.string.navigation_drawer_close
)
If this does not work try Appcompatv7 - v21 Navigation drawer not showing hamburger icon.
I hope it helps you.

I will mention the part of #Rajesh's answer which worked for me:
import android.support.v7.app.ActionBarDrawerToggle;
and in the onCreate function:
mDrawerToggle = new ActionBarDrawerToggle(
getActivity(),
mDrawerLayout,
actionBar, //this made all the difference in seeing the icon
R.string.navigation_drawer_open,
R.string.navigation_drawer_close
)
I think the toolbar, the drawer layout and the activity need to be linked together when you use a Toolbar to create a custom ActionBar instead of using the original ActionBar.
But what is confusing is that in the documentation for ActionBarDrawerToggle, they write the exact opposite.

mention this line in actionbar setting
actionBar.setHomeAsUpIndicator(R.drawable.ic_drawer);

just use this import
import android.support.v7.app.ActionBarDrawerToggle;
You will get the navigation drawer icon and don't specify your icon
ActionBarDrawerToggle mDrawerToggle = new ActionBarDrawerToggle(
getActivity(), /* host Activity */
mDrawerLayout, /* DrawerLayout object*/
R.string.navigation_drawer_open, /* "open drawer" description for accessibility */
R.string.navigation_drawer_close /* "close drawer" description for accessibility */
){ }

You are using the v4 ActionBarDrawerToggle. You should use V7 ActionBarDrawerToggle. Replace this:
import android.support.v4.app.ActionBarDrawerToggle;
with
import android.support.v7.app.ActionBarDrawerToggle;

The main part is here:
NavigationDrawerFragment .java
...
if(locked) {
mIsDrawerLocked = true;
drawerLayout.setDrawerLockMode(DrawerLayout.LOCK_MODE_LOCKED_OPEN, mFragmentContainerView);
} else {
// set a custom shadow that overlays the main content when the drawer opens
mDrawerLayout.setDrawerShadow(R.drawable.drawer_shadow, GravityCompat.START);
// set up the drawer's list view with items and click listener
actionBar.setDisplayHomeAsUpEnabled(true);
actionBar.setHomeButtonEnabled(true);
}
I think locked value isfalse so by default actionBar.setDisplayHomeAsUpEnabled(true); is called and show the back button instead logo image.
Hope its helps!

use android.support.v7.app.ActionBarDrawerToggle instead of
android.support.v4.app.ActionBarDrawerToggle
you will get an error for the constructor of ActionBarDrawerToggle. Use the constructor for ActionBarDrawerToggle v7 with 4 parameters.
Also add this to your styles.xml
<style name="AppTheme" parent="Theme.AppCompat.Light">
<item name="drawerArrowStyle">#style/DrawerArrowStyle</item>

<style name="DrawerArrowStyle" parent="Widget.AppCompat.DrawerArrowToggle">

There is a
mUserLearnedDrawer = sp.getBoolean(PREF_USER_LEARNED_DRAWER, false);
change that code to the one of the followings
mUserLearnedDrawer = true;
or
mUserLearnedDrawer = sp.getBoolean(PREF_USER_LEARNED_DRAWER, true);
Or you can remove completely the logic of checking if the drawer is opened or not at the first time when the app runs and the related code to it (mUserLearnedDrawer variable and so on)
if (!mUserLearnedDrawer) {
// The user manually opened the drawer; store this flag to
