i have put an image in Imageview, but it is taking double the space. There is large gap between the image and textview beneath it. how can i set the image to use the height as per image?
My layout is as follows:
<ScrollView
android:layout_height="match_parent"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android">
<LinearLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
xmlns:tools="http://schemas.android.com/tools"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:orientation="vertical"
android:gravity="center" android:padding="5dp" >
<ImageView
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:src="#drawable/babyfa"
android:scaleType="fitStart"
/>
<TextView
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:text="#string/whatis"
/>
I have attached the imge, the red line represents the extra space the imageview is taking. kindly advise.Image
This is likely being caused by android:scaletype="fitStart". Try removing this from your XML. See this helpful guide for the effects of different scaletype properties (fitStart is at the bottom).
Edit: Try also setting android:adjustViewBounds="true". This will hopefully force the ImageView to preserve the image's aspect ratio.

Objective: I am trying to make a MaterialCard with an Image inside it, as well as some text below the Image. This current layout will serve as a "menu" for the application, where the user can select where to navigate to.
Problem: The ImageView is appearing vertically centred in the MaterialCardView. I would like the ImageView to "stick" to the top of the MaterialCardView. There are large sections of MaterialCardView above and below the ImageView.
My XML Code:
<ScrollView
xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
xmlns:app="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res-auto"
xmlns:tools="http://schemas.android.com/tools"
android:layout_width="fill_parent"
android:layout_height="fill_parent">
<LinearLayout
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
tools:context=".MainActivity"
android:orientation="vertical">
<com.google.android.material.appbar.AppBarLayout
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
app:liftOnScroll="true"
android:id="#+id/appBar">
<Toolbar
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:backgroundTint="#color/design_default_color_primary_dark"
app:layout_scrollFlags="enterAlways">
<TextView
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:text="#string/application_title"
android:textColor="#color/colorWhite"
android:textSize="24sp"/>
</Toolbar>
</com.google.android.material.appbar.AppBarLayout>
<com.google.android.material.card.MaterialCardView
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_marginTop="10dp"
android:id="#+id/mealPlannerCardView"
android:contextClickable="true"
android:focusable="true"
app:cardBackgroundColor="#color/colorWhite">
<ImageView
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_gravity="top"
android:src="#drawable/wedding_dinner"
android:contentDescription="#string/wedding_background_cont_desc"/>
<com.google.android.material.textview.MaterialTextView
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_gravity="bottom"
android:text="#string/mealPlannerTextView"
android:textColor="#color/design_default_color_primary_dark"/>
</com.google.android.material.card.MaterialCardView>
</LinearLayout>
</ScrollView>
output
I tried to use layout_gravity="Top" but it made no difference.
EDIT
android:scaleType="fitStart" made the Image "stick" to the TOP of the MaterialCardView, but now very large space beneath the ImageView that requires scrolling to get to end.
Add the line below in your xml
android:layout_gravity="start|top"
See if this repositions the image for you. Worry about centring later if this works.
You might get the result you want by setting a scaleType for the image view.
Checkout this link: https://thoughtbot.com/blog/android-imageview-scaletype-a-visual-guide
It shows examples of each scaleType, it will help you to choose the right one to achieve the appearance you need.
This is happening because the Android framework is trying to maintain the aspect ratio in the face of your height and width constraints and default scale type.
There are more than one solutions to your problem and its for you to choose based on whose results are acceptable to you. All these solutions revolve around helping the framework with ImageView's aspect ratio. Let me try to put down the possible solutions that I can think of.
First solution can be as simple as changing the scale type on your ImageView as below:
<ImageView
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:scaleType="centerCrop"
android:src="#drawable/wedding_dinner"/>
That will take away the white spaces but crop your image.
A slight variation of the above, where you can define a fixed height of the image. This is a surprisingly widely used solution as it provides a certain
<ImageView
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="240dp"
android:scaleType="centerCrop"
android:src="#drawable/wedding_dinner"/>
Finally, a more elegant and better solution is to provide a fixed aspect ratio to your images using a ConstrainLayout.
I added a fragment with an ImageView, which is a PNG image, and a TextView just below it.
The fragment is showing fine but when I rotate the screen the image will take most of the screen and the TextView is partially cut.
Here's the code:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<RelativeLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="match_parent">
<ImageView
android:id="#+id/shopping_cart"
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_centerInParent="true"
android:src="#drawable/shopping_cart" />
<TextView
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_centerInParent="true"
android:layout_below="#id/shopping_cart"
android:text="#string/no_data"
android:gravity="center"/>
</RelativeLayout>
I'm trying to find a way to resize the image in order to show both image and text in the screen
try using a scroll-view as the root element if u want to retain the same image size rather than resizing the image. Here's a small snippet -
<ScrollView
xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
xmlns:tools="http://schemas.android.com/tools"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="match_parent"
android:fillViewport="true">
<RelativeLayout
android:id="#+id/container"
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:orientation="vertical">
(all your view elements)
</RelativeLayout>
<ScrollView
xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
xmlns:tools="http://schemas.android.com/tools"
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content">
<LinearLayout
android:id="#+id/text_image_container"
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:orientation="vertical">
(Enter view here)
</LinearLayout>
Alright, so firstly ensure that you have the image for the ImageView in all densities. I would suggest that you use this attribute in your ImageView code:
https://developer.android.com/reference/android/widget/ImageView.ScaleType.html
The scale type defines how your image should scale according to the view. I faced a similar issue once, and i was able to solve it using this. Having said that, i have not seen the image you are using, so i cannot be very sure of it. But, i would say that you use:
android:scaleType="centerCrop"
you can find the definition of the attribute on the link provided above. Also, i do not know what devices you are targeting for your app, but its always good to keep views inside a scroll view so that they are visible even on a smaller screen.
Give it a try, if not by centerCrop, then maybe by some other attribute.
Cheers!!
Here is the code:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<RelativeLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="match_parent"
android:gravity="center">
<TextView
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:id="#+id/shopping_text"
android:layout_alignParentBottom="true"
android:layout_centerHorizontal="true"
android:text="#string/no_data"/>
<ImageView
android:id="#+id/shopping_cart"
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_above="#id/shopping_text"
android:src="#drawable/shopping_cart"/>
</RelativeLayout>
I have Created a Listview, and I am trying to add Images to some entries in the Listview. However when doing that I seem to get strange results, the Image appears much smaller than it should. Despite the fact that I have set its Width to Fill_Parent. Here is the XML code:
<RelativeLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="match_parent">
...
<ImageView
android:id="#+id/webImage"
android:layout_below="#id/link"
android:layout_toLeftOf="#+id/ll"
android:layout_alignBottom="#id/ll"
android:layout_width="fill_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:padding="8dp" />
<HorizontalScrollView
android:id="#+id/sv"
android:layout_marginLeft="6dp"
android:layout_marginBottom="3dp"
android:layout_below="#id/webImage"
android:layout_toLeftOf="#+id/ll"
android:layout_width="fill_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content">
<LinearLayout
android:orientation="horizontal"
android:gravity="center_vertical"
android:id="#+id/tag_container"
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content" />
</HorizontalScrollView>
<LinearLayout
android:layout_margin="4dp"
android:layout_alignParentRight="true"
android:id="#+id/ll"
android:orientation="vertical"
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="fill_parent">
...
</LinearLayout>
</RelativeLayout>
Here is the Result:
As you can see, the images are not showing up as intended and some are smaller than others. The Images should span across the entire screen.
You should use ScaleType for ImageView.ImageView is comes with different configuration options to support different scaleTypes. scaleType options are used for scaling the bounds of an image to the bounds of this view. Below are the listed scaleType configuration properties supported.
CENTER
CENTER_CROP
CENTER_INSIDE
FIT_CENTER
FIT_END
FIT_START
FIT_XY
MATRIX

Well I have to fit one ImageView inside another one. It is smaller and has to be exactly at the center. I have both images scaled for different screen resolutions but I can test only on one phone and I am wondering if I set the second image's height and width with dpi to fit my screen resolution will it be perfectly matched on all screens or is there any property in Android aside from setting the height and width that will automatically center one ImageView inside of other ImageView?
Edit: It's in RelativeLayout and the ImageViews are at the top left so I haven't added anything specific to the because they by default are there.
Edit2: Well changing the first ImageView to be RelativeLayout helps center the second image inside of it but then the RelativeLayout grows too big and enlarges the image that is background. Is there a way to make the RelativeLayout be as big as its background?
try this
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<RelativeLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="match_parent"
android:orientation="vertical" >
<RelativeLayout
android:layout_width="250dp"
android:layout_height="250dp" >
<ImageView
android:id="#+id/base"
android:layout_height="250dp"
android:layout_width="250dp"
android:src="#drawable/home"
android:layout_alignParentLeft="true"
android:layout_alignParentTop="true" />
<ImageView
android:id="#+id/center"
android:layout_height="150dp"
android:layout_width="150dp"
android:src="#drawable/home"
android:layout_centerInParent="true"
android:layout_centerVertical="true" />
</RelativeLayout>
</RelativeLayout>
You cannot put an imageView inside another. Hope the following code will be helpful for you.
<LinearLayout
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="match_parent"
android:background="#drawable/background_image"
android:gravity="center" >
<ImageView
android:id="#+id/imageView1"
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:src="#drawable/image_on_center" />
</LinearLayout>
Use RelativeLayout and then use android:layout_centerInParent="true" remember the order you add the ImageViews will decide what is on top :)
Try this:
android:layout_gravity="center"
I have this simple layout XML, and a green_square.png file which is 30X30 pixels
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<LinearLayout
xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
android:layout_width="fill_parent"
android:layout_height="fill_parent"
android:orientation="vertical" >
<ImageView
android:background="#color/red"
android:layout_width="fill_parent"
android:layout_height="fill_parent"
android:adjustViewBounds="true"
android:scaleType="fitStart"
android:src="#drawable/green_square"/>
</LinearLayout>
What I'm trying to achieve is scaling the image to fill the parent width, keeping it's aspect ratio with no extra space of the ImageView.
I've added a red background to the ImageView just for reference of the extra space I want to avoid.
Here is my goal
<ImageView
android:id="#+id/game"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:scaleType="centerCrop"
android:adjustViewBounds="true"
android:src="#drawable/ic_game"
/>
this works for me. Full width of parent and center crop to keep aspect ratio
It's so simple. Just make the width fill_parent and height wrap_content. Here is the I figured it out.
<ImageView
android:id="#+id/game"
android:layout_width="fill_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:scaleType="centerCrop"
android:adjustViewBounds="true"
android:src="#drawable/ic_game"
/>
In my view, this ImageView extra layout is a bug. I had the same thing happen. As a result, text that I wanted to follow the green_square followed the extra layout. So what I did was specify the text relative to the bottom of the screen. That way, the text would go over the extra layout. I admit, it wasn't the best solution, but it looks much better than having a huge space between the green_square and the text.
There lots of great answers here which actually works. I just what to share the way I do this now with a more modern XML syntax, the constraint view. Trust me constraint view rooks!
<android.support.constraint.ConstraintLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
xmlns:app="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res-auto"
xmlns:tools="http://schemas.android.com/tools"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="match_parent"
android:background="#394BAB"
tools:context="com.appdomain.app.apppro.ActivityName">
<ImageView
android:id="#+id/nice_img"
android:layout_width="fill_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_marginTop="0dp"
android:src="#drawable/green_square"
android:scaleType="centerCrop"
android:adjustViewBounds="true"
app:layout_constraintLeft_toLeftOf="parent"
app:layout_constraintRight_toRightOf="parent"
app:layout_constraintTop_toTopOf="parent"/>
</android.support.constraint.ConstraintLayout>
of course the
tools:context="com.collectsavings.collect.collectpro.LoginAndRegisterPrompt"
and
android:src="#drawable/green_square"
Should all match your app activity context and drawabl resources respectively.
Use scale type "fitCenter" or "fitxy"
Try this,
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<LinearLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
android:layout_width="fill_parent"
android:layout_height="fill_parent"
android:orientation="vertical" >
<ImageView
android:layout_width="fill_parent"
android:layout_height="fill_parent"
android:background="#color/red"
android:scaleType="centerCrop"
android:src="#drawable/green_square" />
</LinearLayout>
