ProgressBar get Stucked at 0% while downloading file from server?

I am creating an Android application to download an mp3 file from
server. The downloading is working fine. But the ProgressBar is
stuck at 0% while downloading...
MainActivity.java
public class MainActivity extends Activity {
// button to show progress dialog
Button btnShowProgress;
// Progress Dialog
private ProgressDialog pDialog;
ImageView my_image;
// Progress dialog type (0 - for Horizontal progress bar)
public static final int progress_bar_type = 0;
// File url to download
private static String file_url = "http://eecindia.co.in/up/01%20-%20Pretham%20-%20Oruthikku%20Pinnil%20[Maango.me].mp3";
#Override
public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) {
super.onCreate(savedInstanceState);
setContentView(R.layout.activity_main);
// show progress bar button
btnShowProgress = (Button) findViewById(R.id.btnProgressBar);
// Image view to show image after downloading
my_image = (ImageView) findViewById(R.id.my_image);
/**

try {
URL url = new URL(f_url[0]);
URLConnection conection = url.openConnection();
conection.connect();
// getting file length
int lenghtOfFile = conection.getContentLength();
// input stream to read file - with 8k buffer
InputStream input = new BufferedInputStream(url.openStream(), 8192);
// Output stream to write file

// setting downloaded into image view
Toast.makeText(MainActivity.this, "Downloaded Succesfully.. check SD card 2 see file...", Toast.LENGTH_SHORT).show();
//my_image.setImageDrawable(Drawable.createFromPath(imagePath));
}
}
}
the above process works fine for image files but gets stuck for large files then you have to change this code in doinbackground method and see ..it works :)
HttpURLConnection connection = (HttpURLConnection)url.openConnection(); connection.setRequestMethod("HEAD");
connection.connect();
int length = connection.getContentLength();

Android: Onclick listener for image in listview

I am using asynctask in main activity and populating the list items from server data. Now I placed a download symbol beside each list item and now I want to implement onclick listener for it. I did not use any custom adapter to put download icon beside the list items, I used imageview in my xml. Now I made another class 'download' which downloads a specific file from server. When I put onclick for image (download icon) in main activity, it is showing me a null pointer exception.
My main activity:
public class MainActivity extends Activity {
TextView uid;
Button Btngetdata;
//URL to get JSON Array
private static String url = "myurl";
//JSON Node Names
private static final String TAG_POSTS = "allposts";
private static final String TAG_SINGLEPOST = "post";
JSONArray user = null;
#Override
protected void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) {
super.onCreate(savedInstanceState);
setContentView(R.layout.activity_main);
Btngetdata = (Button)findViewById(R.id.getdata);
Btngetdata.setOnClickListener(new View.OnClickListener() {
#Override
public void onClick(View view) {
new JSONParse().execute();
}
});
}
private class JSONParse extends AsyncTask<String, String, JSONObject> {
private ProgressDialog pDialog;
#Override
protected void onPreExecute() {
super.onPreExecute();
pDialog = new ProgressDialog(MainActivity.this);
pDialog.setMessage("Getting Data ...");
pDialog.setIndeterminate(false);
pDialog.setCancelable(true);
pDialog.show();
}
#Override
protected JSONObject doInBackground(String... args) {
JSONParser jParser = new JSONParser();
// Getting JSON from URL
JSONObject json = jParser.getJSONFromUrl(url);
return json;
}
#Override
protected void onPostExecute(JSONObject json) {
pDialog.dismiss();
try {
// Getting JSON Array
user = json.getJSONArray(TAG_POSTS);
String[] allposts = new String[user.length()];
for(int i = 0; i < user.length(); i++) {
JSONObject c = user.getJSONObject(i);
allposts[i]=c.getString(TAG_SINGLEPOST);
ArrayAdapter<String> adapter = new ArrayAdapter<String>(
MainActivity.this,
R.layout.singlepost,
R.id.singlepostid,
allposts
);
ListView list = (ListView) findViewById(R.id.allposts);
list.setAdapter(adapter);
}
} catch (JSONException e) {
e.printStackTrace();
}
}
}
}
My download class:
public class download extends Activity {
public static final int DIALOG_DOWNLOAD_PROGRESS = 0;
private ProgressDialog mProgressDialog;
#Override
public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) {
super.onCreate(savedInstanceState);
setContentView(R.layout.activity_main);
// startBtn = (Button)findViewById(R.id.downloadid);
ImageView img = (ImageView) findViewById(R.id.downloadid);
img.setOnClickListener(new View.OnClickListener(){
public void onClick(View v) {
startDownload();
}
});
}
public void startDownload() {
String url = "urlforfile";
new DownloadFileAsync().execute(url);
}
#Override
protected Dialog onCreateDialog(int id) {
switch (id) {
case DIALOG_DOWNLOAD_PROGRESS:
mProgressDialog = new ProgressDialog(this);
mProgressDialog.setMessage("Downloading file..");
mProgressDialog.setProgressStyle(ProgressDialog.STYLE_HORIZONTAL);
mProgressDialog.setCancelable(false);
mProgressDialog.show();
return mProgressDialog;
default:
return null;
}
}
class DownloadFileAsync extends AsyncTask<String, String, String> {
#Override
protected void onPreExecute() {
super.onPreExecute();
showDialog(DIALOG_DOWNLOAD_PROGRESS);
}
#Override
protected String doInBackground(String... aurl) {
int count;
try {
URL url = new URL(aurl[0]);
URLConnection conexion = url.openConnection();
conexion.connect();
int lenghtOfFile = conexion.getContentLength();
Log.d("ANDRO_ASYNC", "Lenght of file: " + lenghtOfFile);
InputStream input = new BufferedInputStream(url.openStream());
OutputStream output = new FileOutputStream("/sdcard/fileonserver.pdf");
byte data[] = new byte[1024];
long total = 0;
while ((count = input.read(data)) != -1) {
total += count;
publishProgress(""+(int)((total*100)/lenghtOfFile));
output.write(data, 0, count);
}
output.flush();
output.close();
input.close();
} catch (Exception e) {}
return null;
}
protected void onProgressUpdate(String... progress) {
Log.d("ANDRO_ASYNC",progress[0]);
mProgressDialog.setProgress(Integer.parseInt(progress[0]));
}
#Override
protected void onPostExecute(String unused) {
dismissDialog(DIALOG_DOWNLOAD_PROGRESS);
}
}
}
Now I want to implement onclick listener for each download icon in the listview. Can anyone help?
You want a callback that's (more or less) the same every time, for a child of the listview item view? There are a couple of approaches you could take. You're implementing getView() already in your adapter, right? Let's set the callback there.
public View getView (int position, View convertView, ViewGroup parent){
...
converView.findViewbyId(R.id.ID_OF_YOUR_DOWNLOAD_ICON).setOnClickListener(new OnClickListener() {
//new DownloadFileAsync().execute(url);?
});
return convertView;
}
I don't know where your NPE is, if you post your stack trace we can help with that as well.

Use the Dialog class methods directly not the Activity helper methods.
In the Dialog API guide at http://developer.android.com/guide/topics/ui/dialogs.html they say explicitly to do not use ProgressDialog but use a custom layout with a ProgressBar.
On the other hand you could just use the DownloadManager to download files asynchrously. Check https://github.com/commonsguy/cw-android/blob/master/Internet/Download/src/com/commonsware/android/download/DownloadDemo.java for a simple example even with notifications.
If you still wants this method check http://www.androidhive.info/2012/04/android-downloading-file-by-showing-progress-bar/ for a simple example using a ProgressDialog-

Download File Progress Dialog

I want to perform a file download and show a dialog. But when I try to show the dialog I get a error, any help?
The problem is at showDialog(DIALOG_DOWNLOAD_PROGRESS);
Here is the error message : The method showDialog(int) from the type Activity is deprecated
Heres my code:

Here is the error message: The method showDialog(int) from the type Activity is deprecated
This is a warning, not an error. You can either upgrade to using Fragments or ignore it.
You can also use ProgressDialog and show() method that is not depracated instead of using showDialog. Declare your dialog in AsyncTask:
class DownloadFileAsync extends AsyncTask<String, String, String> {
private ProgressDialog pDialog;
#Override
protected void onPreExecute()
{
super.onPreExecute();
pDialog = new ProgressDialog(context);
pDialog.setMessage("Please wait...");
pDialog.setIndeterminate(false);
pDialog.setCancelable(true);
pDialog.show();
}
}
and in onPostExecute() use
pDialog.dismiss();
