LinearLayouts on top of each other - android

I'm must getting started with android app development. I'm using Android Studio and working through the tutorial. I keep having 2 elements lay on top of each other, whereas one should be below the first element. It is probably a very noob mistake, but hey, I'm a noob and I don't know what it is. :) Code follows:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<android.support.design.widget.CoordinatorLayout
xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
xmlns:app="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res-auto"
xmlns:tools="http://schemas.android.com/tools"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="match_parent"
android:fitsSystemWindows="true"
android:orientation="horizontal"
tools:context="org.kehrli.testapp.MyActivity">
<LinearLayout
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="60dp"
android:theme="#style/AppTheme.AppBarOverlay">
<android.support.v7.widget.Toolbar
android:id="#+id/toolbar"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="?attr/actionBarSize"
android:background="?attr/colorPrimaryDark"
/>
</LinearLayout>
<LinearLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
xmlns:app="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res-auto"
xmlns:tools="http://schemas.android.com/tools"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="match_parent"
android:orientation="horizontal" >
<EditText android:id="#+id/edit_message"
android:layout_width="0dp"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_weight="1"
android:hint="#string/enter_message" />
<Button
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:text="#string/button_send"/>
</LinearLayout>
<android.support.design.widget.FloatingActionButton
android:id="#+id/fab"
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_gravity="bottom|end"
android:layout_margin="#dimen/fab_margin"
android:background="?attr/colorPrimary"
android:src="#android:drawable/ic_dialog_email" />
Can anyone see where I went wrong?

Whenever there is a LinearLayout , you must specify android:orientation, that says whether the child elements should stack horizontal or vertical.
Since you want to stack vertically, update the android:orientation value to vertical.

Your linear layout orientation is set to horizontal, make it vertical and you should be seeing them one below the other.
Change android:orientation="horizontal"
to android:orientation="vertical"

Since you are using a CoordinatorLayout, you want your ToolBar inside an AppBarLayout instead of a LinearLayout. A bit like this:
<android.support.design.widget.AppBarLayout
android:id="#+id/appbar"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:theme="#style/ThemeOverlay.AppCompat.Dark.ActionBar">
<android.support.v7.widget.Toolbar
android:id="#+id/toolbar"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="?attr/actionBarSize"
android:background="?attr/colorPrimary"
app:layout_scrollFlags="scroll|enterAlways"
app:popupTheme="#style/ThemeOverlay.AppCompat.Light"/>
</android.support.design.widget.AppBarLayout>
You should checkout the AppBarLayout for more information on the scroll flags, etc.
In addition the 2nd linear layout may need a layout behavior so it sits below the app bar. So if you see that you may need to add this attribute:
app:layout_behavior="#string/appbar_scrolling_view_behavior"

Android Tabs and CoordinatorLayout, need to add a row of textViews

Android Studio 3.5.1. Working with the Tabbed Activity template. I really don't understand the CoordinatorLayout stuff.
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<androidx.coordinatorlayout.widget.CoordinatorLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
xmlns:app="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res-auto"
xmlns:tools="http://schemas.android.com/tools"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="match_parent"
tools:context=".ChecklistActivity">
<androidx.viewpager.widget.ViewPager
android:id="#+id/view_pager"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="match_parent"
app:layout_behavior="#string/appbar_scrolling_view_behavior" />
<com.google.android.material.appbar.AppBarLayout
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:theme="#style/AppTheme.AppBarOverlay">
<com.google.android.material.tabs.TabLayout
android:id="#+id/tabs"
app:tabMode="scrollable"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:background="?attr/colorPrimary" />
</com.google.android.material.appbar.AppBarLayout>
</androidx.coordinatorlayout.widget.CoordinatorLayout>
This works great. Using Tabs with ListView on each tab, etc.
But, at the bottom of the screen, I want to add a row of TextViews that contain different status info. (e.g. Time since start, Counts, etc.) So I put a LinearLayout at the bottom of the XML. And added a few TextViews. It shows in Design View in Studio. But at the TOP. But when I launch the App on my phone, I don't see it anywhere.
So in short, how do I work with this XML (CoordinatorLayout) to add such a 'status bar' to my view at the bottom of the screen?
Use a RelativeLayout as the first child inside the CoordinatorLayout. Have the property android:layout_height="wrap_content" and android:layout_alignParentBottom="true" to the TextViews. The rest, i.e. ViewPager and TabLayout can remain as they are.
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<androidx.coordinatorlayout.widget.CoordinatorLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
xmlns:app="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res-auto"
xmlns:tools="http://schemas.android.com/tools"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="match_parent"
tools:context=".ChecklistActivity">
<!-- You could even use a ScrollView -->
<RelativeLayout
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="match_parent">
<com.google.android.material.appbar.AppBarLayout
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:theme="#style/AppTheme.AppBarOverlay">
<com.google.android.material.tabs.TabLayout
android:id="#+id/tabs"
app:tabMode="scrollable"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:background="?attr/colorPrimary" />
</com.google.android.material.appbar.AppBarLayout>
<androidx.viewpager.widget.ViewPager
android:id="#+id/view_pager"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="match_parent"
android:layout_above="#id/lilayTextViews"
app:layout_behavior="#string/appbar_scrolling_view_behavior" />
<LinearLayout
android:id="#+id/lilayTextViews"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_alignParentBottom="true"
android:orientation="horizontal">
<!-- TextViews go here -->
<TextView
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:text="Text 1"/>
</LinearLayout>
</RelativeLayout>
</androidx.coordinatorlayout.widget.CoordinatorLayout>

Included layout covers parent layout

My main activity has a Toolbar within an AppBarLayout and an include below that:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<android.support.design.widget.CoordinatorLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
xmlns:app="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res-auto"
xmlns:tools="http://schemas.android.com/tools"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="match_parent"
android:fitsSystemWindows="true"
tools:context="com.zhephyr.somedaytoday.MainActivity">
<android.support.design.widget.AppBarLayout
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:theme="#style/AppTheme.AppBarOverlay">
<android.support.v7.widget.Toolbar
android:id="#+id/toolbar"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="?attr/actionBarSize"
android:background="?attr/colorPrimaryDark"
app:popupTheme="#style/AppTheme.PopupOverlay" />
</android.support.design.widget.AppBarLayout>
<include layout="#layout/activity_chrono_tab"/>
</android.support.design.widget.CoordinatorLayout>
The included layout is a RelativeLayout with a TabLayout connected to a ViewPager:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<RelativeLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
xmlns:app="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res-auto"
xmlns:tools="http://schemas.android.com/tools"
tools:context=".ChronoSwipeViewActivity"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="match_parent">
<LinearLayout
android:id="#+id/tabs"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:background="#color/colorVariant"
android:weightSum="1">
<android.support.design.widget.TabLayout
android:id="#+id/chrono_tabs"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_marginStart="15dp"
android:layout_marginEnd="15dp"
app:tabMode="fixed"
android:background="#color/colorVariant"/>
</LinearLayout>
<android.support.design.widget.FloatingActionButton
android:id="#+id/fab"
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
app:srcCompat="#android:drawable/ic_dialog_email"
android:layout_margin="#dimen/fab_margin"
app:fabSize="normal"
android:layout_alignParentBottom="true"
android:layout_alignParentEnd="true"/>
<android.support.v4.view.ViewPager
android:id="#+id/chrono_pager"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_below="#id/tabs" />
</RelativeLayout>
The issue I am currently running into is that The included layout sits on top of my main layout filling the entire screen. I cannot see the Toolbar because it is being covered. I want the included layout to fill only the area below the toolbar. I've tried placing app:layout_behavior="#string/appbar_scrolling_view_behavior" in both layouts and in the include with no avail. Anyone know what's going on?
Update
The activity being shown is this:
This activity should be shown within this one and with out the app title:
Change the root of your included layout to android:layout_height="wrap_content"
Currently, it is match_parent so it will take the height of the parent filling the entire screen.
You will also want to add to your <include>, android:layout_below="#id/toolbar" to place it below the toolbar. By default, RelativeLayout places Views in the top-left so adding this property will tell it to start your included layout below the toolbar.
Note the last two lines in the below code.
<RelativeLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
xmlns:app="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res-auto"
xmlns:tools="http://schemas.android.com/tools"
tools:context=".ChronoSwipeViewActivity"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content">
in include tag of main layout
<include layout="#layout/activity_chrono_tab"
android:layout_below="#id/toolbar"/>

Android Scroll View in fragment crops content

I created a Scroll View which should allow me to scroll through all the content which is inside Linear Layout (that is a child of Scroll View).
Code looks like this:
<ScrollView xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
xmlns:tools="http://schemas.android.com/tools"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="match_parent"
tools:context="pl.oakfusion.delegator.DomesticDelegationSecondFragment">
<LinearLayout
android:orientation="vertical"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content">
....
<Button
android:id="#+id/button"
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_marginRight="25dp"
android:layout_marginTop="25dp"
android:background="#color/textDarkest"
android:text="Save"
android:textColor="#color/textColor"
android:layout_gravity="right" />
</LinearLayout>
Preview looks like this:
But in my app I have this:
I can't scroll down, this is all I can see.
If I allow to rotate I have horizontal view:
which now allows me to scroll but cuts the button entirely. (On the picture is bottom of view) I can pull down fast and I can see that the button is there but it goes up again (this android thing when you can pull slightly further but it scrolls back)
How can I fix this?

try adding this to the scrollView in your xml layout
android:fillViewport="true"
I have experienced the same problem once. I tried adding padding for the ViewGroup inside ScrollView. Then it worked fine. Its a hacky solution and not an ideal one.
For the example mentioned above (by user3212350):
I have added some padding to the LinearLayout inside ScrollView to make the view completely visible. The amount of padding required may differ for various screen sizes.
<ScrollView xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
xmlns:tools="http://schemas.android.com/tools"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="match_parent"
tools:context="pl.oakfusion.delegator.DomesticDelegationSecondFragment">
<LinearLayout
android:orientation="vertical"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
##android:paddingBottom="50dp"##>
....
<Button
android:id="#+id/button"
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_marginRight="25dp"
android:layout_marginTop="25dp"
android:background="#color/textDarkest"
android:text="Save"
android:textColor="#color/textColor"

RecyclerView and Toolbar, can't scroll bottom item into view

EDIT: See Using the Master/Detail template in ViewPager Fragments (download link) for full code
I have a toolbar and a recyclerView. When the layout is first inflated the last item of the recyclerView is out of the scroll-able region of the screen and is therefore not visible. After rotating the item appears. It is apparent that the toolbar is pushing the recyclerView outside the boundaries of the screen. If I add padding to the bottom of the recyclerView with the height of the toolbar the issue is resolved BUT only for the initial inflation of the layout. After rotation I am left with a gap on the bottom of the screen. I'm using sdk 23.
A possible workaround would be to programmatically remove the padding after the very first inflation of the layout. I assume I could use:
onCreateView(){ if (onSaveInstanceState != null) removePadding();}
However, I'd rather not have to do a dodgy work-around.
My app is basically exactly the same as the Master/Detail-flow template supplied in Android Studio, except that I use fragments and a single Activity. There is no such issue in the template.
Any ideas?

Toolbar toolbar = (Toolbar) root.findViewById(R.id.toolbar);
toolbar.setTitle("List");
I added:
android:layout_gravity="fill_vertical"
android:layout_marginBottom="?attr/actionBarSize"
to item_list.xml. The issue persists. The first time the layout is inflated it shows the bottom element as expected. After rotating to landscape and back to portrait it leaves a margin the size of the actionBar at the bottom of the screen.
This issue does not happen in the Master/Detail-flow template available in Android Studio and the code for item_list.xml, item_list_twopane.xml and activity_item_list are exactly the same as the code used in item_list.xml, land/item_list.xml and fragment_item_list.xml in my project. Yet, as the attached images show, the preview of the AppBar shows the flexible space in the Android template but not my code.
EDIT: When I click on the reference for "?attr/actionBarSize" in the template it navigates to a different line in android SDK's values.xml, which starts with <declare-styleable name="AppCompatTheme">. The same line of code in my app references a different line starting with<declare-styleable name="Theme">.

<!-- When I add my own view here and use match_parent, it fills ENTIRE screen, even over the Toolbar. The ViewPager right above does not do this. Why? -->
</android.support.design.widget.CoordinatorLayout>
I am trying to add my own buttons/textviews/etc to my activity_main.xml but I do not know where to add them. The android.support.v4.view.ViewPager uses match_parent although it does not fit the whole screen, it expands across the entire screen besides the Toolbar area at the top. However, whenever I add my own view underneath the android.support.v4.view.ViewPager, lets say RelativeView and set it to match_parent, it expands OVER the Toolbar. This led me to believe that I should put my contents inside the ViewPager tags but that does not work either.
Where should I put my views so that they are not overlapping the Toolbar?
You can wrap your ViewPager in an RelativeLayout and you can add the view child also.
Here is the code snippet which may help you-
<RelativeLayout
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="match_parent"
android:background="#color/colorAccent"
app:layout_behavior="#string/appbar_scrolling_view_behavior">
<Button
android:id="#+id/button"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="48dp"
android:text="I am clickable" />
<android.support.v4.view.ViewPager
android:id="#+id/container"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="match_parent"
android:layout_alignParentEnd="true"
android:layout_alignParentLeft="true"
android:layout_alignParentRight="true"
android:layout_alignParentStart="true"
android:layout_below="#+id/button"
android:background="#color/colorNeutral"
android:layout_above="#+id/button2" />
<Button
android:layout_marginBottom="56dp"
android:layout_alignParentBottom="true"
android:id="#+id/button2"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="48dp"
android:text="I am clickable too" />
</RelativeLayout>
