Remove Android Studio "changed lines" popup that covers scrollbar - android

On OSX using Android Studio 1.5.1, I'm getting "changed lines" popups that cover the scrollbar on the right and prevent me from scrolling. They're pervasive and require extra attention to get the right combination of clicks and mouse movement to regain control of the scroll bar from this hijacking.
How do I stop this popup? It isn't useful at all for me.
The popup covers the scrollbar for other things too, like TODOs.
It appears that two messages combine into a correct popup to the left, that doesn't cover the scrollbar. So... whatever is responsible for this popup knows how to do things correctly, but chooses not to in some cases.
These two images are at the far right, the scrollbar.
This blocks clicks and makes it difficult to scroll.
This is more reasonable, but still unnecessary for my needs.
I did find a thread on this subject, but I do not want to turn syntax highlighting off. Also, it appears that for some configurations these popups are click-through so they don't interfere with functionality. No so for me, unfortunately.

I tried disabling plugins, but the functionality appears to be in the core (or the core set of plugins for Android Studio).
Has anyone else seen this? Is there a preference that can just disable these change line popups?

Visual Studio how to disable VS Output Window's auto scrolling to bottom during Android/Xamarin debug run?

I am losing my mind ...wondering how could the following behaviour be the shipped default user experience in Visual Studio where all technologies involved are Microsoft-made:
use microsoft visual studio (2019)
use microsoft Xamarin.Forms to make an app
run the app in debug mode to see updates in the VS Output window
every new line that comes in through logcat from my phone to VS, force auto-scrolls Visual Studio's builtin Output window to the bottom and there's no way to stop it?!
I have to either: 1. stop running the app and read the output. Or 2. futilely wrestle with the damn scrollbar and fight Visual Studio to try to maintain the output window's scroll on a specific position enough moments to read anything.
How did this get past any internal QA for Xamarin? Did they ever try to, you know, make an app? Am I blind? Is there an easy way to stop auto scrolling? Why isn't it enabled by default? The default behavior should be: if the scrollbar is all the way to the bottom, then auto-scroll, sure. But if the scrollbar has been moved by the user, then stop auto-scrolling for the love of god! (this is common sense in many other software)
Also, there's no button on the Output window that locks the scrolling.
This is a hack not a solution, but it works:
Just Ctrl+F anything in the Output window. As long as and while this is active / has found something, the auto-scrolling will be locked/stopped. (and you can still use the scrollbar manually)
So the functionality IS already in VS. Just MS didn't bother to add a scroll lock button for it, or have a manual scrolling override. Microsoft has this lovely track record of insistently not using their own products in a way that actual human beings (read: not imaginary simple target personas) will definitely need to use them.
Release a Microsoft dev environment that can't have a pausable (readable) Output window? Microsoft: Sure, why not? We don't see the problem here. Why would you ever want to read the output of your application? What an edge case!
Try placing the caret (in the Output window) somewhere other than at the bottom.
If I click somewhere in the output other than at the very end, Visual Studio will stop scrolling to the bottom.
I haven't tried it with an Android/Xamarin project, but I assume the output window behaves the same for all project types.

Drag/Drop feature in Android is really snappy

I am having trouble using android studio's drag and drop feature. I have no problem getting the items onto the preview mode of the android phone, but when I want to move the palettes, I can't seem to be able to place them where I want. A lot of times I will place let's say a TextView, and it will snap to a different location an inch away. Anyone know if any solutions?
Unless you know a way to un-snappy the editor, it's time to get to know the XML Text Editor, next tab over in Android Studio.
The way I get round the snappy side is in there: use the "android:layout_below="#+id/example" and it's brethren. Unless you have a massive amount of elements, this is very doable.

Android Studio Android DDMS display issue

I'm using Android Studio 0.7 and while i normally find it quite pleasant to work with, its logcat support is intermittent at best. Now i've somehow gotten myself into a bit of an interface conundrum. Something i did inadvertently with the Android DDMS window at the bottom has meant that "Devices" and "logcat", which are normally in a two-paned window together (e.g. "Devices | logcat"), have become separate. As a result i can no longer view the filter box and the logcat output without switching panes, which as you can imagine is a real PAIN! (pun unintended but welcomed)
Here are some screenshots - at the top you see two shots of the two panes in their current separated form in v0.7, and below you see what it normally looks like (from v0.8). It's like i've somehow lost the whole header for the individual panes...
I've looked at all the buttons nearby, looked through all the settings, and googled as best i can, and i just can't figure it out. Can anybody help me? At the moment i can only hope that google fixes their developer L preview so i can actually start using 0.8 but who knows how long that will be....
In Intellij IDEA 13.1.5 for Mac, press Fn in keyboard, drag 'Devices' window to 'logcat' window, done!
Click and drag the part I highlighted in Red. When it becomes a separate box, just close it by clicking on the X on the top right.

Eclipse - How to cancel Automatic Alignments at Android's GUI?

I'm programming an Android application with Eclipse using Android's SDK, and I have a serious problem with the GUI Editor.
The problem is auto-alignment: For example, I drag and drop one button into the GUI Form.
And then I drag another button, which HAS to align to something, usually it aligns to the first button, but also if not, it has to align to something else.
And that means, if I move the first button, the second button moves as well.
This is seriously bad because every time I drag one button, it drags all the others away.
Is there a way to cancel this thing? What I mean is that I'll be able to freely drag around Buttons in the form, without having them align to other Buttons and moving with them.
I come from .NET development, where in Visual Studio for example, this kind of auto alignment just doesn't exist, which is perfect. You can freely drag buttons all over without having them align or stick to each other.
So can I force the buttons not to align, just like in Visual Studio GUI design, for example?

In the past I've kept my game's options behind the physical menu button for these reasons:
I don't have to have on-screen buttons in-game.
The menu action is consistent with the android user experience; it's not something unique to my app.
In some situations Android provides a soft menu button in the bottom system bar. Looking forward, though (e.g. with recent devices and targetSdkVersions), it seems there's no guaranteed way to have a menu button without implementing the new ActionBar.
If my understanding is correct, I see these options:
Use the ActionBar. Say goodbye to a big chunk of screen real-estate, especially in landscape orientation.
Implement my own on-screen menu button. I've seen this in other games, and it strikes me as inconsistent and terrible.
Target an old sdk version. I don't like this.
Is my understanding correct? Anyone have additional suggestions for my list?

You could implement a tiny , transparent menu button of your own. Many games do that. That way you are not dependent on anyone and you don't loose any screen space.
Edit : Your menu button could then have follow your game's design.

Your definition of "terrible" differs from mine. IMHO, any game that has its own stylized graphics and look (i.e., just about anything using the Canvas or OpenGL) should have implemented its own "menu" from the outset, and therefore largely would be oblivious to these changes.
