get location requestLocationUpdates service? - android

I try to make a locationing service but somehow i cant make it work. Lat and Lng are always NULL.
I had some exceptions on locManager.requestLocationUpdates(LocationManager.GPS_PROVIDER, 0, 0, locListener);
if (network_enabled) {

Try using Fused Loaction Provider. It will take care of all the heavy stuff. And you will get callbacks for when location is available.

Getting GPS in service in android

My problem is not new, but none of answers in Stackoverflow was helpful for me.
Situation: I have a service which works with an Alarm. it repeats every 1 minutes and run a service for me. in that service I need to send GPS data to a web server.
the codes are as below:
import android.app.Service;
import android.content.Intent;
import android.location.Location;
import android.os.AsyncTask;
import android.os.IBinder;
import bliksund.taxitracking.tools.Cachepref;
import bliksund.taxitracking.tools.PostData;
public class SendData extends Service {
Cachepref cachepref;
GET_GPS gps;
#Override
public void onCreate() {
super.onCreate();
}
#Override
public int onStartCommand(Intent intent, int flags, int startId) {
cachepref = new Cachepref(this);
gps = new GET_GPS(this);
new getloc().execute();
return super.onStartCommand(intent, flags, startId);
}
#Override
public IBinder onBind(Intent intent) {
return null;
}
private class getloc extends AsyncTask<Void, Void, Void> {
String username;
Double lt;
Double lg;
Location location;
#Override
protected Void doInBackground(Void... params) {
username = cachepref.getUsername();
location = gps.getLocation();
lt = location.getLatitude();
lg = location.getLongitude();
return null;
}
#Override
protected void onPostExecute(Void aVoid) {
PostData postData = new PostData(username, 1, lt, lg);
super.onPostExecute(aVoid);
}
}
}
this is my service.
+ PostData will Post the parameters to a web page.
+ Cachepref saves username for user Session.
Problem: When the codes go to get GPS Location. it will make an error that says:
location = gps.getLocation(); // will cause to below line error
Can't create handler inside thread that has not called Looper.prepare()
I used AsynTask to solve this problem, but it is still there.
GET_GPS code are as below:

with the help of ρяσѕρєя K . he said to move these codes to PostExecute and it was running, the problem with PostData happened. and I I solved in the way below. I hope it helps others.

It seems to work fine, it launches etc and runs, and when location is changed it makes Toast text as required, but: The distance to target doesn't get updated, say I launch app, click start service and distance to destination is 1500 Meters, when location gets changed it still makes toast text saying: "1500 meters"
What am I doing wrong?

Unable to get location from GPS?

I am trying to get the location from the GPS but not able to get it. this is because the location is accessed by the Network provider.
If I am commenting all the code of network provider then the GPS location returns null.
I have tried so much, but unable to resolve this.
If anybody can help then it will be great help for me.

You can use the below service for getting gps.just invoke this service at the begining.

/** calls the Location Listner */
locationManager.requestLocationUpdates(provider, 500, 0,locationListener);
}

I've just tested the above code on my device and everything is working smoothly, not sure what is the problem at your end.
Important notes:
Please make sure you have the permission to access GPS location in your manifest file
<uses-permission
android:name="android.permission.ACCESS_FINE_LOCATION"/>
The code may not work properly on the emulator , better test on actual device. if you don't have access to one , please checkout the DMMS Emulator Control to generate location data
Edit:
you need to commit out the Location data related to Network Provider.
and Also remove the textView.setText from your LocationResult object because textView is null. so the fixes:
getLocation(Location location) {
.........
String loc = "Lattitude: "+location.getLatitude()+" longi "+location.getLongitude()+" Accur "+location.getAccuracy()+" Time "+location.getTime() +" "+location.getProvider();
Log.i("Log",loc);
Toast.makeText(MainActivity.this, loc, Toast.LENGTH_LONG).show();
}
and comment out the network code from your MyLocation class
// if(network_enabled)
// lm.requestLocationUpdates(LocationManager.NETWORK_PROVIDER, 0, 0, locationListenerNetwork);

log("\n" + location.toString());
}
}
I normally don't do this, but I almost have to go.
This is the code I use, it works. (just put this in a new project).
I didn't clean it, because I ripped it from my other project, but it does work, when you make a new project and just copy/paste this.:

setContentView(R.layout.activity_main);

}
public LocationResult locationResult = new LocationResult() {

Also add this in manifest:
<uses-permission android:name="android.permission.ACCESS_COARSE_LOCATION" />
<uses-permission android:name="android.permission.ACCESS_FINE_LOCATION" />
<uses-permission android:name="android.permission.INTERNET" />
No time to explain now, maybe tomorrow if you still need it.
It prints the latitude and longitude in your logcat.

NullPointerException When Trying To Fetch Current Location

I am trying to Set Location but getting NullPointerException , i have Provided android.permission.ACCESS_COARSE_LOCATION , android.permission.ACCESS_FINE_LOCATION
In manifest file my Source code is as Follow , i am getting Null pointer on
List<Address> addresses = new Geocoder(LocationDemo.this,Locale.getDefault()).getFromLocation(currentLocation.getLatitude(), currentLocation.getLongitude(), 1);
My Coding is As Follow
import java.io.IOException;
import java.util.*;
import android.widget.*;
import android.app.Activity;
import android.os.Bundle;
import android.location.*;
import android.content.*;
public class LocationDemo extends Activity {
TextView addressText;
Location currentLocation;
double currentLatitude;
double currentLongitude;
String store;
#Override
public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) {
super.onCreate(savedInstanceState);
setContentView(R.layout.main);
addressText = (TextView)findViewById(R.id.addressText);
addressText.setText("ready");
LocationManager locationManager =
(LocationManager)this.getSystemService(Context.LOCATION_SERVICE);
LocationListener locationListener = new LocationListener() {
public void onLocationChanged(Location location) {
updateLocation(location);
}
public void onStatusChanged(
String provider, int status, Bundle extras) {}
public void onProviderEnabled(String provider) {}
public void onProviderDisabled(String provider) {}
};
locationManager.requestLocationUpdates(
LocationManager.NETWORK_PROVIDER, 0, 0, locationListener);
currentLocation = locationManager.getLastKnownLocation(LocationManager.NETWORK_PROVIDER);
try{
List<Address> addresses = new Geocoder(LocationDemo.this,Locale.getDefault()).getFromLocation(currentLocation.getLatitude(), currentLocation.getLongitude(), 1);
StringBuilder result = new StringBuilder();
if (addresses.size() > 0) {
Address address = addresses.get(0);
int maxIndex = address.getMaxAddressLineIndex();
for (int x = 0; x <= maxIndex; x++ ){
result.append(address.getAddressLine(x));
//result.append(",");
}
}
addressText.setText(result.toString());
Intent send_add = new Intent();
send_add.putExtra("address",result.toString());
store = addressText.getText().toString();
}
catch(IOException ex)
{
addressText.setText(ex.getMessage().toString());
}
}
void updateLocation(Location location){
currentLocation = location;
currentLatitude = currentLocation.getLatitude();
currentLongitude = currentLocation.getLongitude();
}
}
i am importing this code in application that extends Service that is trying to obtain Address on startup of service
Might be you are getting current location as null. as it takes some time to calculate the location .if this is the case , try this
import java.io.IOException;
import java.util.*;
import android.widget.*;
import android.app.Activity;
import android.os.Bundle;
import android.location.*;
import android.content.*;
public class LocationDemo extends Activity {
TextView addressText;
Location currentLocation;
double currentLatitude;
double currentLongitude;
String store;
#Override
public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) {
super.onCreate(savedInstanceState);
setContentView(R.layout.main);
addressText = (TextView)findViewById(R.id.addressText);
addressText.setText("ready");
LocationManager locationManager =
(LocationManager)this.getSystemService(Context.LOCATION_SERVICE);
LocationListener locationListener = new LocationListener() {
public void onLocationChanged(Location location) {
setAddress(location)
}
public void onStatusChanged(String provider, int status, Bundle extras) {}
public void onProviderEnabled(String provider) {}
public void onProviderDisabled(String provider) {}
};
locationManager.requestLocationUpdates(
LocationManager.NETWORK_PROVIDER, 0, 0, locationListener);
}
public void setAddress(Location location){
currentLocation = location;
currentLatitude = currentLocation.getLatitude();
currentLongitude = currentLocation.getLongitude();
try{
List<Address> addresses = new Geocoder(LocationDemo.this,Locale.getDefault()).getFromLocation(currentLocation.getLatitude(), currentLocation.getLongitude(), 1);
StringBuilder result = new StringBuilder();
if (addresses.size() > 0) {
Address address = addresses.get(0);
int maxIndex = address.getMaxAddressLineIndex();
for (int x = 0; x <= maxIndex; x++ ){
result.append(address.getAddressLine(x));
//result.append(",");
}
}
addressText.setText(result.toString());
Intent send_add = new Intent();
send_add.putExtra("address",result.toString());
store = addressText.getText().toString();
}
catch(IOException ex)
{
addressText.setText(ex.getMessage().toString());
}
}
}
LocationListener[] mLocationListeners = new LocationListener[] {
new LocationListener(LocationManager.GPS_PROVIDER),
new LocationListener(LocationManager.NETWORK_PROVIDER) };
try this code in your Location Listener.
Of course you're getting a null pointer because currentLocation is null till onLocationChanged is called. Thus you have to put your code there:
LocationListener locationListener = new LocationListener() {
public void onLocationChanged(Location location) {
// put your code here once you have the location
}
public void onStatusChanged(
String provider, int status, Bundle extras) {}
public void onProviderEnabled(String provider) {}
public void onProviderDisabled(String provider) {}
};
