android change actionbar to toolbar

I am trying to change Actionbar to Toolbar, I have successfully added Toolbar and removed Actionbar, but now the problem I have is that on my layout there will be a blank space above my toolbar where the Actionbar was at before. How can I move my Toolbar up so that it aligns with the top of the screen?

Note:
You'll want to add android:fitsSystemWindows="true" to the parent layout of the Toolbar to ensure that the height of the activity is calculated correctly.
When using the support library, make sure that you are importing android.support.v7.widget.Toolbar and not android.widget.Toolbar.

Android Studio Navigation bar showing Apps's name is missing?

When I launch the apps in Emulator, I realize the Navigation bar which shows apps name is missing. May I know what's going on?

Probably you have
android:theme="#style/AppTheme.NoActionBar"
in your AndroidManifest.xml. If so, you need to change it to
android:theme="#style/AppTheme"
(assuming you have AppTheme defined in styles.xml with parent parent="Theme.AppCompat.Light.DarkActionBar" or similar).

Check this if you add toolbar in xml file like this

If you have toolbar included in your xml, add this line of code inside of onCreate() method, right after setContentView(R.layout.activity_main);

setSupportActionBar(toolbar);

There is an option in the Layout editor named 'Show layout decorations'
You must have this option turned off.
There is a button with the image of an eye above the mobile screen in android studio. Click on that and a drop down menu should be seen. Check the 'Show Layout Decorations' and your problem should be solved.

It might that you have changed Style.xml file with theme style of NoActionBar
please change it to
<style name="AppTheme" parent="Theme.AppCompat.Light.DarkActionBar">
and then Run

However, I assume the Toolbar exists in the program, since I don't get any NullPointException on the places where the program used to crash. So I assume is more of a stylesheet problem.

I want the action bar to display on activities apart from one (NewActivity). I use intents to call up NewActivity, at which point I thought it would load up the AppTheme.NoActionBar style, but the bar still appears on the screen
I'm using the navigation drawer activity in android studio if that makes a difference
EDIT: I've tried all the suggesting adding Adding Theme.AppCompat.Light.NoActionBar, but that only makes my action bar white and doesn't actually remove it. I tested this in a new android studio project, created a navigation drawer activity, and add the theme setting to my styles.xml. I still get the same problem

You can try this in your onCreate() of NewActivity to hide the action bar for particular Activity

Unable to set the Primary color to the Toolbar in Android Material Design

The emulator is 5.1 version. The min sdk is 4.0 for the project.
When i tried setting some color to the toolbar background , i see the Toolbar not fitting to screenwidth and primary color didn't got applied. Tried keeping Toolbar in LinearLayout but invain.
Kindly help me in resolving this.
I am hardly seeing any examples with material design. If anyone is familiar with some links kindly provide it.(Seen Androidhive and in youtube slidenr).
