After downloading Android Studio and opening an existing project, when I went to edit configuration (after trying to run an existing project) but when I attempted to configure it as an Android Application, I did not find the android application option, which when I compared to my other computer, is required to run the program.
Furthermore, I am missing the Android SDK Manager, both in the IDE and on the startup screen. I don't have SDKs installed on this computer, and I think they are needed to run my project, so I kind of want the SDK Manager.
I have also re-installed Android Studio 8 times, including several older versions. I also installed the packages, which do come with SDK tools, and I made sure everything was selected on installation.
In my case it helps: just File -> invalidate caches/Restart
hope it also can be usefull to someone ;-)
check the sdk manager present in the location "C:\Users\"user-name"\AppData\Local\Android\sdk"
launch the SDK manager install the package that you needed
paste the link
"C:\Users\"user-name"\AppData\Local\Android\sdk"
[Android Studio>configure>Settings>Android SDK ]
Maybe try deleting everything of Android Studio and then installing the latest version. It might be because of the leftovers of the previous versions that caused this problem to occur. The best way is to try restoring your PC to the time you hadn't have Android Studio.
Click on File -> Sync Project with Gradle Files

I've downloaded Android Studio from the official website, the one for M1 chip (arm).
Basically running it for the first time, the error is the following:
An error occurred while trying to compute required packages
I was searching about it the whole day to figure out a way to make Android Studio work, but that error keeps showing. Not completely sure if it's related to M1 Macbook, as on my Intel one it works as expected.
What I already tried to do:
Installing the command line tools, then placing it on SDK folder (Users/user/Library/Android/sdk). Then added the bin to the PATH (Reference)
After doing that, when executing the sdkmanager on terminal I get the following message Could not find or load main class com.android.sdklib.tool.sdkmanager.SdkManagerCli
Then I searched again and it leaded me to this thread, then as on the answers I tried to rename the folder, then other tries not related. I fell into many links and references that did not work at all.
After that I try to check what happens if I click on New Project, then the following is shown:
The Android SDK location cannot be at the filesystem root
As the message indicates, the issue is The Android SDK location cannot be at the filesystem root, so I searched again about it
I looked into that and got to a few links, for example this one and this one. Before doing that search I clicked on the Edit button, which lead me to the Android SDK to be updated/installed (Nice!), so I had to delete the content I had on Android folder (inside Library) and clicked next...then, I got the same message An error occurred while trying to compute required packages.
Then I thought "ok, maybe if I change the SDK location", so I changed to ../Documents/sdk, which ended up in the same result
Seems like no matter what I do, it ends up showing up that same message.
When I run java -version that's what I see:
java version "1.8.0_311"
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.8.0_311-b11)
Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM (build 25.311-b11, mixed mode)
Did anyone have the same issue? Am I doing something wrong? Not sure how to proceed from here, despite of the Android Studio version I download it's always the same result.
Any help is appreciated.
This is what solved it for me on my M1.
Go to Android Studio Preview and download the latest Canary build for Apple chip (Chipmunk). Don't worry this is just to get through the initial setup.
Unpack it, run it, let it install all the SDK components, accept licenses, etc as usual.
Once it's done, simply close it and delete it.
Now when you start your stable Android Studio (Arctic Fox) you should not see the error.
I tried over a dozen 2021 stable and Canary builds from https://developer.android.com/studio/archive and couldn't get any of them to work.
This is the only thing I could find that worked:
Download, unpackage and run Android Studio 3.6.3 android-studio-ide-192.6392135-mac.zip from here.
Proceed through the initial setup and let it download and install the SDK. Ignore any errors at the end.
Delete this version and open the stable Android Studio like normal.
You can now proceed through setup!
I also faced this issue a couple days and I changed my mind to not use Android Studio. And It's fixed!
My alternative option is to download IntelliJ community edition and install Android SDK to your machine.
Image for IntelliJ Download Page
After (IntelliJ) installation is complete,
You need also to create new project, select android then download SDK. (thanks for #SteveRoger 's comment)
then open Android Studio again and follow its setup wizard. It will show that my machine has been already installed Android SDK and it can run perfectly at this time.
Hope this is an alternative solution for you.
Have a great day.
I solved the problem with these steps:
Install the old Android Studio 3.6.3 (find the old Android Studio at https://developer.android.com/studio/archive)
Install the Android SDK
Overwrite the installation with the Apple Chip version of Android Studio
I had the same problem with my MacBook air(m1 chip) as you mentioned.
How did I solve it?
Just download the IDE - Intellij IDEA and create a new project, select Android Project and there download Android SDK, now you can install android studio again and the sdk is installed.
I've also had this exact same issue when downloading Android Studio 7.0.3. Here's what helped me.
Download the command line tools, place them in the SDK folder (e.g., on mac: /Users/user/Library/Android/sdk), and then add the bin folder to the PATH.
Install the latest platform: in a terminal, execute ./sdkmanager "platforms;android-31"
Next up execute this command ./sdkmanager --channel=3 emulator (this switches the channel from stable=0 to canary=3 )
Open Android Studio, and go to the SDK Manager (Appearance and Behavior > System Settings > Android SDK)
Click on "Edit", and then select the sdk folder. Then "Next" > "Next" > "Finish".
Now restart Android Studio and everything should work
I had the exact same error as OP. Follow what Art Fedorychak mentioned, it worked for me as well. It seems like the current stable build of the Apple M1 android studio version doesn't actually initialize an SDK if one doesn't already exist, but it seems to be able to update and or / initialize one that does as long as the same folder is being referenced, so we just need to use a working SDK for M1 on the initial run and then revert back to the stable AS
This is what solved it for me:
Download & install IntelliJ IDEA. https://www.jetbrains.com/idea/download/#section=mac
Open IntelliJ IDEA and create New Android Project
Download sdk success
Open Android Studio & checked it worked
My solution to this problem is simply to put the SDK in another location. For myself, I put the SDK folder to subfolders in Documents. The SDK download will initiate.
After reinstalling my Android Studio I have big issues because all my projects have problem with Gradle file.
There are .jpeg-s attached
Gradle File
Messages Gradle Sync
[Some conflicts in installation area][3]
I would suggest fresh new install of everything and keep in mind where exactly will you install it (my suggestion would be to keep it simple like C:\Android\ for studio and C:\Android\SDK for SDK
Also you can click on Edit next to the SDK location and see what if your SDK report any issues or you can select another SDK location and update missing tools from there.
Or if you would like to tackle current issue on another way, use search and find SDK folder and move it your android folder (don't forget to avoid black space in file path), and again through SDK location don't forget to put new path to the Studio.
After you set up your environment ans run your build gradle again there shouldn't be any more issues like this, or at least when you install missing platforms and tools it will fix thing as it should.
Also have the same dependency version for libraries when you finish setting up environment.
Finally done. I resolved uninstalling Android Studio. The real problem was SDK. When you uninstalling AS SDK is still on computer, and I deleted all these files from SDK folder. The best option if you install AS and SDK directly on C:. After that AS working without any problems. Thanks #Miroslav for all your help and patience.
Today I've installed Android Studio Canary 1
Now I cannot run my app. This following dialog appears.
I've already set the right SDK location through File-> Project Structure-> Android SDK location.
Expecting your help to solve this problem.
Warning Dialog image:
Go to project structure settings and set Source Compatibility and Target Compatibility to your current java development kit version:
Just you need to sync your project file with your gradle file.
File -> Sync Project with Gradle Files
I tried every answer in this post but my problem only got resolved when I made these steps:
File -> Close project -> Remove project -> Open existing project (same
project)
Maybe this will save a morning to another person with the same bug.
EDIT
This happened to me a lot on a MacBook. After I posted this answer it just kept happening so what I did was:
uninstall the Android Studio version I had from the App Store;
download the desktop stable version from Android Studio website;
start using the desktop version of Android Studio.
Never happened again.
Sometimes the SDK path will be incorrectly configured. You would need to fix it.
To Settings/Preferences( command + , on mac).
Search for SDK
Under Android SDK, click on edit and point it the root of sdk directory on your file system. (If ther is no SDk installed then install in from the below list).
i suggest you go to build.gradle and sync again.
Or Tools -> Android -> Sync Project with Gradle Files (Android 3+)
You need to insall SDK api 19 check this out.
https://developer.android.com/studio/releases/platforms
Go to sdk manager and install sdk according to your device and check your device api. Example if your device is jellybean then install api 19 sdk.
Go to Tools> Android > SDK Manager and make sure you have selected default Setting under System Setting. In this image I have selected Android 7.1.1 as default SDK
Just click on the button ..."Sync Project with gradle file"
Error will be remove
I had the same problem and what it worked for me was just sync with gradle.
I just did what I've found in this similar question:
How do I "select Android SDK" in Android Studio?
The original answer:
go to build.gradle and click sync now. Then it worked.
Update :
File -> Sync Project with Gradle Files (Android Studio 3.1.1)
Tools -> Android -> Sync Project with Gradle Files (Android Studio
3.0.1) Or You can click on the icon from the toolbar.
Sync Project Icon
This answer may not help works for later version as Android studio Team work on making the tool more better, the way to sync may be
different in the next version of Android Studio.
COMMON WAY that may helps is try to sync project and then Invalidate
Caches and Restart Android Studio.
Solution for Android Studio 3.1.2
Before that, by the way, I had invalidated cache and restarted too, but it didn't work.
Please, try and let us know.
P.S.
I had this problem after I imported a project from Git, just in case someone would like to replicate.
Today, I update ADT to 22.0.1.v201305230001--685705, and found that Eclipse stopped generating R.java. I believed that it is problem of Eclipse, because I create a whole new clean android project, and I cannot even run it as android application. I cannot find any files under gen folder.
The version of Eclipse is 4.2.2, is there any way to solve it?
I try to use Eclipse 4.3 with the latest version ADT, but the problem is still there.
I had the same problem.
Open up the android SDK Manager, and install the new android build tools. Without this you will no longer be able to build anything.
For some reason they have seperated them, and a lot of people are not noticing.
Try deleting bin folder and clean the project..and In Eclipse, under the Project menu, is an option build automatically. That would help you build the R.java file everytime modifications are made. The Clean... option is also there under Project It seems to be a common issue with many different answers
Update android-sdk, I think sdk need Android SDK Build-tools. For update it follow some steps--
Go to Window->Android SDK Manager.
Update and Install all tools (Android SDK Tools, Android SDK Platform-tools,Android SDK Build-tools) which are in Tools folder.
Check the xml files of your layout whether they are properly saved with no error or not.
I have faced similar problem that suddenly R.java is disappeared and eclipse could not regenerate it after building SDK. I checked SDK manager and saw that Android SDK build tool is perfectly installed. Finally, I have noticed that there are some errors in xml files. After fixing and saving those, R.java generated automatically in my case.
All project worked fine
But suddenly
This problem occurs all project...
I can not run all project.
This occurs after the recent update for the Eclipse Plugin(s) for Android. In Eclipse, use Window -> Android SDK Manager, and update your Android SDK Installation. The error message will disappear when you restart eclipse.
Or, if you're like me and have both Eclipse 3.7.x and Eclipse 4.2.x installed, you will need to update the Android SDK Installation on both of them if you want both of them to work (despite the fact that I used the same installation directory).
Updating the Android SDK install is something of a beast in and of itself; I was having some issues installing API 17, but I found that clearing the SDK Manager cache alleviated those problems.
I still had the issue following aanno's answer, so what I had to do after his step was to switch my workspace (File->Switch Workspace) to another folder, apply that and then immediately go back and re-select my original workspace location. Once I did that and eclipse returned, my workspace was back up and running.
The error appeared after an upgrade earlier today. There was no obvious difficulty with the upgrade.
After many partial measures, it took the following to get the error to go away:
deleting both the Tools and current Android API installation, using the Android SDK Manager (followed by reboot);
deleting the original directory in my filesystem containing the Android SDK files;
downloading a fresh version of the Android SDK files (http://developer.android.com/sdk/index.html) and specifying its location in filesystem to Eclipse in Preferences=>Android;
installing fresh versions of both the Tools and current Android API, using the Android SDK Manager (followed by reboot)
I wonder if there is something buggy in the regular updating protocol. If updates go wrong again, I will try this full uninstall and reinstall of the SDK files and ADT Plugin from the outset.
For the record:
Mac OS 10.8.2 on 11-inch MacBook Air, Late 2010
Eclipse Version: Juno Service Release 1
Build id: 20121004-1855
Android tools: 21.0.0.v201210310015-519525
Even reinstalling the Android Plugins for Eclipse didn't made this error go away for me.
For the record (aka what I've tried)
I've looked for a file called "find_java" in my SDK Folder but couldn't find any (OS X here). Solutions suggested by other answers modifying this file was not an option.
I've also uninstalled Eclipse Plugins (using Eclipse Juno) via About eclipse > Installation Details. Also I've tried to remove possible remaining files for this I removed these files/folders:
/path_to_eclipse/features/com.android.* (found 4 folders in total e.g. com.android.ide.eclipse.adt_16.0.1.v201112150204-238534)
/path_to_eclipse/plugins/com.android.(found 4 *.jar e.g. com.android.ide.eclipse.ddms_16.0.1.v201112150204-238534)
I then reinstalled the plugins from inside Eclipse via Help > Install New Software following the usual process.
Note: Starting the Android SDK Manager from within Eclipse I got informed my software is up to date!
Solution (?)
With installed Eclipse Plugins I downloaded the SDK from dev.android.com, unzipped to a nice location (near the beach of you ask me ^^) and referenced it from within Eclipse: Eclipse > Settings > Android > SDK Location.
It seems the dex.jar error moved away after this (consisstent even after restarting Eclipse).
However currently my open projects are Unable to resolve target 'android-XX' (X generic version number).
Once again I had a look in the Android SDK Manager and yup - now it's listing a lot of plugins as uninstalled so currently I'm re-installing the API for various Android level.
Will keep this post updated but it seems that downloading and manual referencing the SDK did the trick.
