I had installed Android Studio few months back. It was working fine till yesterday. Windows made some automatic update. Then, I started getting an error if I try to start Android Studio:
Config path'C:\Program Files(x86)\Android\android-studio\config' is invalid.
If you have modified the 'idea.config.path' property please make sure it is correct,
otherwise please re-install the IDE.
I searched on Stack Overflow and found some suggestions which had helped others - enter link description here
But this is not helping me. In my copy of the file C:\Program Files\Android\android-studio\bin\idea.properties, the lines
#idea.config.path=${user.home}/.AndroidStudioPreview/config
#idea.system.path=${user.home}/.AndroidStudioPreview/system
were missing. (I have copied these here from the other link with answers).
I have tried
Uninstall the installation and reinstall it
Running Android Studio as administrator
Manually opening the idea.properties file as administrator, adding
the 2 lines for config and system, then saving file and restarting
Android Studio.
But the same error persists. Can anyone help me to resolve this?
I uninstalled once more. Then, again ran the installation with "run as administrator" privilege. After this, if I start Android studio with "run as administrator" privilege, then it starts up. If I run it normally (non-administrator) it still runs into the same error.

what should i do? i tried install on other device, and it worked fine. My device is Redmi 4X and other device is Samsung J3
Faced the same issue, not sure of the reason but in Android studio, Click on the File -> Invalidate Caches/ Restart and then it starts to work.
I got same issue with my device. i restart my device and its work properly.
The problem is because you don't have the proper SDK for the Android version. I'm telling you because a month has passed for me too. The solution is to download the appropriate pack in the SDK Manager.
If you have doubts how to enter:
Close the project.
In the welcome panel click on settings, then choose the SDK Manager option.
Click show package details and select the version for Android and choose all packages.
Finally you click ok XD
Try this method if it works perfect greetings
If other answers didn't help and previously application was installing correctly on your device, try to check your AndroidManifest file. Check that nothing forbids to install your app because of os version conflict or manifest merging errors or other reasons.
I came across this problem recently, through process of elimination I determined the cause was related to dependencies in the build.gradle(your app name).
I suggest working backwards and comment out everything that was added since the last known working build/install.
In my case I have a legacy app developed back in 2016 being rewritten, dependencies for signalR have changed quite a bit since then, the original libs where causing the install to fail while everything else seemed excellent, not even a single build error was occurring. Commenting out the libs and references got the application to a runnable state.
In my case, I deleted the emulator and recreated it. It solved the issue.
Before this, I had already tried following which did not work for me:
From menu: File->Invalidate cache/restart.
Deleting .cxx, .idea, .gradle, build folders and rebuilding.
Cold boot device emulator
Posting this in case someone is trapped in my kind of situation.
For 2 days I can't start coding my first android app, because of an issue with Android Studio 2.3.1.
There is many discussions about that out there, but non of them helped me so far.
I'm not able to use Run button for my app or even to edit the main_activity.xml file in the program window. Also the following error occurs when Android Studio starts running.
Screen shot of the error:
I'm workin' on Windows 7, 64bit, 8gb RAM, Java 1.8.0.121. Installed Android Studio 2.3.1 using android-studio-bundle-162.3871768-windows.exe file with no custom settings.
To solve the problem I've tried:
reinstall Android Studio
remove .gradle catalog
use File>>Invalidate Crashes/Restart
nothing helps.
Problem solved!
In my particular case the problem was caused by uncomplete Android Studio installation.
The reason of such an installation was Comodo AntiVirus
I noticed that there was some .bat files blocked during the installation. Comodo doesn't inform about it, but you can check it on blocked features list.
So I removed completely Android Studio, turned off all blocking functions in Comodo and quited it. Then installed AS once again.
Now it works fine. Ad least so far... Luckilly there's no Gradle error, so I hope there won't occur further problems.
Hope that this tip's gonna be helpful to somebody.
Have a good day folks!
I just opened a new Android project thorugh eclipse, I want the application to run on my samsung galaxy s4 which has KitKat 4.4.2 on it, so I opened the project so as Target SDK is 5.0.1 and the compilation will be done with 4.4.2, just when the project opens I get errors, i fixed it by accesing both appcompat and the projects project.properties and changing the target to apk-21. the errors vanish. But ! when I try to debug with my phone or with the emulator it fails, - Installation error: Unknown failure - thats the error, as I looked through the web I saw many people that get through this problem and non of the solutions was posted solved my problem. I will be really glad if someone could help me solve this annoying thing. Thank! !
I had the similar kind of issue and I have resolved the issue following the steps below:
File >> Settings >> Build, Execution, Deployment.
Next click on Instant Run and uncheck "Enable Instant Run to hot swap code/resource changes on deploy".
Apply and OK.
Try building the app again now. It should work now. Enable the Instant Run feature again if you want to.
We had a similar issue in Android Nougat.
Reason happened to be renaming the Project Folder.
Build -> Clean Project
Build -> Rebuild Project
Try this out in case you have altered anything related to Project Structure or Gradle Settings.
It happened for me also. Try to unplug your device and reconnect again. Once done, run adb devices in your command prompt to see if the device is detected successfully.
If yes, then clean and run the project. This worked for me. Give it a try.
Second Option
Try to delete your debug certificate and then restart the eclipse. Do Project clean - build and run the application
Debug certificate path depends on platforms. Find it in
Preferences - Android - Build - Default debug keystore.
I am experiencing a very wired problem since this evening.
If I have any errors in my android project, and build is failed, then my Android studio gets frozen / stuck. I cant do anything but kill the Android studio application.
Even if I open the same project next time, gradle will try to build and freezes again. [Please find attached screen shot]
Only solution I could find is .... I have to find what exactly cause the "build fail" and I will have to resolve the issue using some other editor, and then my android studio will start working.
Thing is it was working without any issues till this evening; and suddenly broken down. Any one else having the same issue ??

If you are using Android Studio v1.2.1.1 or newer and you are using Macbook, I've recently seen that if your device is connected to your laptop (by usb have no idea about over the wifi) and you sleep your laptop then login again, Android Studio hang. Therefore, you need to unplug usb cable then you should see Android studio is happy and then reconnect your usb cable.
Open your terminal and reset adb:
adb kill-server
adb start-server
This is how I solved the same problem:
Go to your project directory using your terminal
run ./gradlew (or gradlew.bat) assembleDebug
Fix the problems reported by gradle
Restart android studio and the problem is gone
Based on barbarian's answer I did this on my Mac:
start a terminal
chmod +x gradlew
./gradlew
./gradlew build
This last step showed an error in my xml file, indicating that I used unescaped single quotes. Fixing that solved the hangup.
Well, I uninstalled android studio and installed it again, and now the problem has gone away.
I still wonder how in the world it broke in the first place.
In case some one else is facing the same issue, try reinstalling your studio.
In case if you are using Mac osx refer How to completely uninstall Android Studio? to uninstall Android studio properly; Because only deleting App will not completely uninstall it.
In my case the same thing happened, after I had added image-resources with dashes in the filename.
I manually deleted them, renamed them, and added them with underscores in the name, and Android Studio worked normally again.
(I am not sure the dashes were the reason, why should they, but doing the above fixed it.)
#Hesam's answer doesn't work for me. Using OSX and AS 1.2.1.1, my building stuck in 'Scanning files to index' and I cannot solve it even after restarted my Macbook. Below work for me:
Shut down Android Studio (force to kill or just unplug the usb you will be good to go)
Go to the directory of AndroidStudioProjects and move the application directory out to some other location (outside AndroidStudioProjects).
Restart the android studio, now you will be shown the screen asking you whether you want to start a new project or open an old one.
Again paste the folder you have cut and kept aside in step 2 back to AndroidStudioProjects directory.
In the android studio prompt, select open existing project and select the directory you have now just pasted to AndroidStudioProjects.
It should work for my case.
I have tried literally everything to try and rectify this error when trying to deploy an app to an actual android device for debugging but have been unable to solve the matter. Everytime I try to launch I get a failed [INSTALL_FAILED_DEXOPT] error and when checking the logcat it is always because there is no classes.dex in my debug apk.
If I run gradlew.bat clean assembleDebug, there is no difference in the apk size so I'm assuming there is a build error in android studio. I am using android studio beta 0.86 and have tried it on 0.89 with the same result. I have tried build tools for 19.1 to 21 with no result. I have also tried different devices and created a new project (that has never been installed on my devices) and android studio seems to think it needs to be uninstalled first when attempting to deploy.
I have tried switching my device to ART, uninstalling and reinstalling android studio, redownloading the sdk and restarting my computer. NOTHING and I mean NOTHING has worked. I think the problem started after I downloaded the lollipop apis but am not sure. I have tried uninstalling all apps with my package signature on my device but NOTHING works! Not even Project -> Clean Project -> Rebuild
This is extremely frustrating as I cannot debug my apps anymore :/ has anyone had any experience with this error or ways to rectify it?
So turns out that the issue was mismatching sdks between Android Studio and the Project. The project was using an old sdk and once I made them the same, I cleaned and rebuilt the project and everything was good to go.
UPDATE:
I ran into the problem again after I tried to update my SDK and its tools. Turns out that when you try to do this, the SDK locks the tools folder and then you get an error saying some file couldn't be overridden. When this happened to me, all the build tools were deleted so there were errors in the .dex file created when debuggin my app.
We are using android 2.2 (really old i know) and couldn't find a fix for this error. Eventually we found this bug https://android-review.googlesource.com/#/c/30900/. The only solution for us was to remove some libraries...
I kept having the same problem - manually building worked fine, but Android Studio would not build a proper APK.
The problem was that I started the project on Android Studio and Android Gradle plugin version 2.0-beta2. After updating the Gradle plugin to 2.0-beta6 through a simple build.gradle change, the builds stopped working.
Turns out that, although I installed a beta version of Android Studio, the update checker only checked the stable channel. After setting the updater to check the canary channel as well, I was able to upgrade Android Studio to version 2.0-beta6 and builds continued to work normally.
You can change the update preference in Android Studio settings under Appearance and Behavior -> System Settings -> Updates.
I encountered this error when storage of the device is full. Try to open some space.
Try run these commands
adb reconnect
adb reconnect device
