So I am currently using a framelayout to hold two custom views and a scrolling text view so that they are all stacked on each other.

This should be putting a text view on top of a featureShoutView on top of a shoutCanvasView.
Instead it is sandwiching the text view in between my two custom views. Both featureShoutView and shoutCanvasView are drawing onto canvases. Any idea what may be causing this issue? Is it possible that two canvases don't play nice in a single layout? Any help is appreciated and I can provide more details as needed.

Now I want to add a view or view group which is actually visible but not affect sizes and locations of other widgets and hide it with .offsetTopAndBottom method.
After that to use ViewDragHelper class to show the view based on some gestures. Actually the behavior is similar to BottomSheetBehavior but without CoordinatorLayout involved.
The only problem is that I cannot figure out how to add the view into LinearLayout.
To make a View not only invisible, but also not take up any space, thereby not interfering with layout behaviors like wrap_content or layout_weight you can set the Views visibility to gone either in XML using android_visibility="gone" or in code using yourView.setVisibility(View.GONE)

You can Wrap this LinearLayout in the Relative layout. If you don't want to change the Linear layout to RelativeLayout. Here is the modified layout XML and It will display Button the Bottom Right. You can modify layout_alignParentRight to left, center depend on your need.

Try using RelativeLayout for the root view and use :
android:layout_alignParentBottom="true"
With LinearLayout at root view is not possible. Also, instead of RelativeLayout, ConstraintLayout is a good alternative.
I created a Scroll View which should allow me to scroll through all the content which is inside Linear Layout (that is a child of Scroll View).

I can't scroll down, this is all I can see.
If I allow to rotate I have horizontal view:
which now allows me to scroll but cuts the button entirely. (On the picture is bottom of view) I can pull down fast and I can see that the button is there but it goes up again (this android thing when you can pull slightly further but it scrolls back)
How can I fix this?

try adding this to the scrollView in your xml layout

I have experienced the same problem once. I tried adding padding for the ViewGroup inside ScrollView. Then it worked fine. Its a hacky solution and not an ideal one.

I have added some padding to the LinearLayout inside ScrollView to make the view completely visible. The amount of padding required may differ for various screen sizes.

When I include the line <include layout="#layout/content_pic" /> within the AppBarLayout (that is, I move it up two lines) the button appears, and all the functionality of the button works. However when I put it after that, the button does not appear, and all I can see is the 'App Bar' bit of the layout.

However, when I put the <include layout="#layout/content_pic" /> into the AppBarLayout I can see the button, as shown in the image below.
I have tried taking the content of content_pic.xml and including it directly instead of using the include statement, this still does not appear.
I've run out of ideas here - can anyone suggest what might be going wrong?
AppBarLayout works good if you us NestedScrollView or RecyclerView
so I suggest you change your content_pic.xml TO.

I'm an activity that holds a gridview with movie posters and some overlay text with the movie title.
I made an extra layout for tablets that also displays details about the selected movie in the same activity.
The problem is that when I use the tablet in landscape mode, for some reason the first row of elements expands vertically, occupying all the available space.
