I'm trying to get the LinearLayout to be aligned at the bottom of this RelativeLayout. I tried setting alignParentBottom="true", but then I can't even see the contents of the LinearLayout. Is there another way to accomplish what I need?
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<RelativeLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
android:layout_width="90dp"
android:layout_height="200dp"
android:minHeight="200dp"
android:background="#color/colorPrimaryDark"
android:elevation="2dp"
android:gravity="center">
<TextView
android:id="#+id/textView_bookName"
android:gravity="center"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_margin="1dp"
android:padding="10dp"
android:textSize="20dp"
android:textColor="#color/white"
/>
<TextView
android:id="#+id/textView_bookAuthor"
android:gravity="center_horizontal"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_gravity="center_horizontal"
android:layout_margin="1dp"
android:text="Author"
android:textSize="10dp"
android:textColor="#color/white"
android:layout_below="#+id/textView_bookName"
/>
<LinearLayout
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:orientation="vertical"
android:layout_below="#+id/textView_bookAuthor"
>
<Button
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:id="#+id/button_download_book"
android:text="#string/download"/>
<Button
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:id="#+id/button_read_book"
android:text="Read"
android:visibility="gone"/>
<ProgressBar
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:id="#+id/progressbar_book_download"
style="#android:style/Widget.ProgressBar.Horizontal"
android:progress="0"
android:visibility="gone"
/>
</LinearLayout>
</RelativeLayout>
Add to LinearLayout: android:layout_alignParentBottom="true"
eg.
<LinearLayout
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:orientation="vertical"
android:layout_alignParentBottom="true"
android:layout_below="#+id/textView_bookAuthor">
[...]
<LinearLayout
android:layout_alignParentBottom="true"
android:layout_height="100dp"
android:layout_width="wrap_content">
</LineaLayout>
Try using a LinearLayout that contains both layouts and setting them an android:layout_weight and android:layout_height="0dp".
Don't forget to set the ratio between the weights to one you'd like and setting the container's android:orientation to vertical.
BTW, for textSize you better use sp and not dp...
Please try below xml which I have modified. It will solve the issue. I have removed the android:layout_below="#+id/textView_bookAuthor" and added android:layout_alignParentBottom="true".
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>

android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_margin="1dp"

android:textSize="20dp"
/>
<TextView
android:id="#+id/textView_bookAuthor"

android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_gravity="center_horizontal"
android:layout_margin="1dp"
android:text="Author"
android:textSize="10dp"
android:layout_below="#+id/textView_bookName"

<LinearLayout
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_alignParentBottom="true"

<Button

please help why it like this
It is working but your ImageView take all the width and it don't have android:src attribute (so it show nothing) and you don't need the last LinearLayout :
<LinearLayout
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="match_parent"
android:layout_below="#id/saldo"
android:orientation="vertical">
<!-- Useless Linear Layout -->
<LinearLayout
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:orientation="horizontal">
<ImageView
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content" />
<TextView
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_margin="10dp"
android:text="WillStitch#gmail.com"
android:textSize="10dp"
android:textStyle="bold" />
</LinearLayout>
</LinearLayout>
I'm trying to position the blue icon precisely in the center of the card, but for some reason the icon goes up to the top of the card.
Can someone tell me what's wrong?
Thanks,

I assume that in gridview item your parent is LinearLayout which can't be seen from your code snippet. If that's the case, in FrameLayout properties set the height to wrap_content
<FrameLayout
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_weight="0.9"
android:focusable="true"
android:foreground="?android:selectableItemBackground"
android:background="#drawable/document_grid_item_bg">
Given code snippet is working fine with LinearLayout as parent.

1. Remove FrameLayout and add its attributes to child RelativeLayout.
2. Use attribute android:src instead of app:srcCompat to set image on ImageView.
Try this:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<LinearLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="match_parent"
android:orientation="vertical">
<RelativeLayout
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="0dp"
android:layout_weight="0.9"
android:background="#fff">
<ImageView
android:id="#+id/draft_more_button"
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_alignParentEnd="true"
android:layout_alignParentTop="true"
android:layout_marginTop="5dp"
android:layout_marginRight="5dp"
android:src="#drawable/ic_more" />
<ImageView
android:id="#+id/imageView5"
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_centerInParent="true"
android:src="#drawable/draft_icon" />
</RelativeLayout>
<RelativeLayout
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="0dp"
android:layout_margin="5dp"
android:layout_weight="0.1">
<TextView
android:id="#+id/draft_date_tv"
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_centerInParent="true"
android:text="16 May 2017" />
</RelativeLayout>
</LinearLayout>
FYI, If you are using CardView as a container, then just put below LinearLayout inside your CardView.

The problem is that you are using linear layout so it is aligning the layouts one after another.So you need to use relative layout and it will work
Try this code
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<LinearLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="match_parent"
xmlns:app="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res-auto"
android:background="#drawable/bg"
android:orientation="vertical">
//this image and two textview, i need to place at center of screen
<LinearLayout
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="match_parent"
android:gravity="center"
android:layout_gravity="center"
android:orientation="vertical">
<ImageView
android:id="#+id/seat_icon"
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:background="#drawable/on_logo"
android:layout_marginBottom="#dimen/dp_size20"
/>
<TextView
android:id="#+id/seat_number"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:text="Test1"
android:textAllCaps="false"
android:textColor="#color/white"
android:textSize="16dp"
android:gravity="center"/>
<TextView
android:id="#+id/another_text"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:paddingTop="#dimen/dp_size10"
android:paddingBottom="#dimen/dp_size10"
android:text="TEst 2"
android:textAllCaps="false"
android:textColor="#color/white"
android:textSize="16dp"
android:gravity="center"/>
</LinearLayout>
<RelativeLayout
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_marginBottom="#dimen/dp_size10">
<RelativeLayout
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:weightSum="1"
android:layout_alignParentBottom="true"
android:layout_alignParentStart="true">
<ImageView
android:id="#+id/on_boarding_circle_arrow"
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_gravity="center"
android:layout_centerInParent="true"
android:background="#drawable/circle_arrow" />
</RelativeLayout>
</RelativeLayout>
</LinearLayout>
The RelativeLayout at the bottom is the problem. And add android:gravity="center" to your parent LinearLayout
Just add android:gravity="center" in your root LinearLayout and remove last RelativeLayout and see
cut the 'layout_gravity' and 'gravity' parameters from child LinearLayout and paste this to Parent LinearLayout
<LinearLayout
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="match_parent"
android:gravity="center"
android:layout_gravity="center"
android:orientation="vertical">
<LinearLayout
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:orientation="vertical">
<ImageView
android:id="#+id/seat_icon"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
/>
Your code....

Here is my xml code, it has an ImageView which stands before LinearLayout id = "linearLayout2" :
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<RelativeLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="match_parent">
<LinearLayout
android:orientation="horizontal"
android:layout_width="fill_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:id="#+id/linearLayout1"
android:background="#drawable/border"
android:paddingBottom="5dp">
<ImageView
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:id="#+id/imageView"
android:src="#drawable/ic_swap"
android:layout_gravity="center_vertical" />
<LinearLayout
android:orientation="vertical"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:id="#+id/linearLayout2"
android:paddingBottom="5dp"
android:layout_marginRight="5dp">
<AutoCompleteTextView
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:id="#+id/fromStationField"
android:completionThreshold="1"
android:hint="From"
android:textAlignment="textStart"
android:gravity="left|start"
android:layout_gravity="left" />
<AutoCompleteTextView
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:id="#+id/toStationField"
android:completionThreshold="1"
android:hint="To"
android:background="#android:color/transparent"
android:paddingRight="4dp"
android:paddingLeft="4dp" />
</LinearLayout>
</LinearLayout>
</RelativeLayout>
What I want to do is to make an ImageView stands after the LinearLayout id = "linearLayout2" like I show in an image bellow.
How to do this using only xml ?
One solution could be inside of linearLayout1 to move the ImageView after linearLayout2. Then set linearLayout1's width to match_parent and the sibling views width to 0dp. Lastly, use layout_weight to achieve the proportion of size you want for the ImageView and LinearLayout2.
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<RelativeLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="match_parent">
<LinearLayout
android:id="#+id/linearLayout1"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:background="#drawable/border"
android:orientation="horizontal"
android:paddingBottom="5dp"
android:weightSum="10">
<LinearLayout
android:id="#+id/linearLayout2"
android:layout_width="0dp"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_marginRight="5dp"
android:layout_weight="9"
android:orientation="vertical"
android:paddingBottom="5dp">
<AutoCompleteTextView
android:id="#+id/fromStationField"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_gravity="left"
android:completionThreshold="1"
android:gravity="left|start"
android:hint="From"
android:textAlignment="textStart" />
<AutoCompleteTextView
android:id="#+id/toStationField"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:background="#android:color/transparent"
android:completionThreshold="1"
android:hint="To"
android:paddingLeft="4dp"
android:paddingRight="4dp" />
</LinearLayout>
<ImageView
android:id="#+id/imageView"
android:layout_width="0dp"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_gravity="center_vertical"
android:layout_weight="1"
android:src="#android:drawable/ic_swap" />
</LinearLayout>
</RelativeLayout>
In the layout below, I'm using negative margins in the ImageView and a positive margin in the LinearLayout container left of ImageView so that we don't need to use layout_weight property and can keep using match_parent. For this you need to fix the size of your ImageView. Check this code out:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<RelativeLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
android:layout_width="match_parent"

I am trying to have textviews overlay over imageviews. Something like this
Can someone help me with the code.
Wrap a TextView and ImageView into FrameLayout, put the TextView in FrameLayout after ImageView. Then, wrap the FrameLayout into RelativeLayout OR LinearLayout. Make some position setup (as per the needs).
<RelativeLayout>
<FrameLayout>
<ImageView />
<TextView />
</FrameLayout>
</RelativeLayout>
You can create a frame layout and within the frame layout keep an imageview and a linearlayout(with a translucent background and a textview).
The translucent color can be placed in the colors file as : #80000000
Here is a snippet :)
<FrameLayout
xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
android:id="#+id/mainlayout"
android:layout_width="fill_parent"
android:layout_height="fill_parent"
android:foregroundGravity="bottom"
android:orientation="vertical" >
<ImageView
android:id="#+id/ivFullScreenAd"
android:layout_width="fill_parent"
android:layout_height="fill_parent"
android:layout_marginBottom="8dp"
android:src="#drawable/home_page_ad" />
<LinearLayout
android:layout_width="fill_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_gravity="bottom"
android:background="#color/translucent"
android:orientation="vertical" >
<TextView
android:id="#+id/detailTitle"
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_gravity="left"
android:paddingLeft="10dip"
android:textAppearance="?android:attr/textAppearanceLarge"
android:text="Please swipe up"
android:textColor="#color/white"
android:textIsSelectable="true"
android:textSize="20sp" />
</LinearLayout>
</FrameLayout>
I had the same problem and solved it using a custom gridView. You must apply this in getView.
Custom gridView XML:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<FrameLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
android:id="#+id/layout_practitioner"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="match_parent"
android:orientation="vertical" >
<ImageView
android:id="#+id/item_image"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="match_parent"
android:scaleType="centerCrop"
android:contentDescription="#string/contentDescriptionContent"
/>
<LinearLayout
android:id="#+id/layout_login"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="match_parent"
android:orientation="vertical"
android:layout_gravity="center"
android:background="#CC515116"
android:visibility="gone"
android:gravity="center" >
<TextView
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:textColor="#android:color/white"
android:text="#string/text_enter_pass_password"
android:paddingBottom="7dp"
android:textSize="20sp"
/>
<EditText
android:id="#+id/edit_practitioner_pin"
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="40dp"
android:layout_gravity="center"
android:background="#drawable/edittext_shape"
android:ems="6"
android:gravity="center"
android:inputType="numberPassword"
android:maxLength="4"
android:layout_marginBottom="10dp"
android:layout_marginTop="10dp"
android:visibility="visible"
/>
<Button
android:id="#+id/pract_button"
android:layout_width="70dp"
android:layout_height="30dp"
android:background="#drawable/buton_shape"
android:layout_marginBottom="35dp"
android:text="#string/btn_ok"
/>
</LinearLayout>
<LinearLayout
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:orientation="vertical"
android:layout_gravity="bottom"
android:background="#bbffffff"
android:focusable="false"
android:focusableInTouchMode="false" >
<TextView android:id="#+id/item_text"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_marginTop="3dp"
android:textColor="#color/text_black"
android:gravity="bottom|center"
android:textSize="20sp"
android:textAllCaps="true"
android:paddingBottom="0dp"
/>
<TextView
android:id="#+id/text_pratiotioner_group_name"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="match_parent"
android:textColor="#color/sub_title_color"
android:visibility="visible"
android:gravity="bottom|center"
android:textAllCaps="true"
/>
</LinearLayout>
</FrameLayout>
Though an old question but should incase anyone is interested in the card view version of this question here you go...
<android.support.v7.widget.CardView
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
app:cardCornerRadius="5dp"
app:cardElevation="5dp"
android:layout_weight="0.5"
app:cardPreventCornerOverlap="false"
app:cardUseCompatPadding="true"
android:clickable="true">
<FrameLayout
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:orientation="vertical"
android:gravity="center_vertical"
android:layout_centerInParent="true">
<RelativeLayout
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:padding="16dp"
android:background="#89969F">
<ImageView
android:id="#+id/iv_overlay"
android:layout_width="196dp"
android:layout_height="196dp"
android:clickable="true"
android:src="#drawable/your_image"
android:layout_centerInParent="true" />
</RelativeLayout>
<LinearLayout
android:layout_width="fill_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_gravity="bottom"
android:background="#80000000"
android:orientation="vertical" >
<TextView
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:singleLine="true"
android:textSize="22sp"
android:textStyle="bold"
android:gravity="center_vertical"
android:text="Settings"
android:textColor="#color/white"
android:layout_gravity="center"
android:layout_alignParentTop="false"
android:layout_alignParentBottom="true"
android:layout_centerHorizontal="true"
android:padding="8dp" />
</LinearLayout>
</FrameLayout>
</android.support.v7.widget.CardView>
Please modify the layout accordingly, If you want to accommodate the images on an imageview only, then you can drop the below layout in a relative one including an imageview too.
<LinearLayout
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:background="#drawable/your_image"
android:orientation="vertical" >
<TextView
android:id="#+id/bottom_textview"
android:layout_width="fill_parent"
android:layout_height="fill_parent"
<!-- layout_gravity="supply accordingly" -->
android:gravity="center"/>
</LinearLayout>
