There are scenarios in feature files wherein I've use the text "Foo" and on click its open a new page. this text sometime changes to "Foo1" or "Foo2" or to something else. to avoid line by line change in feature file for "Foo" to "Foo1" or "Foo2" is there any way that I can globally declare variable in top/bottom of the feature file where I can set the required text in variable on fly and I shall start executing my test instantly?
This change exist in many feature files and around 1000 lines in feature file. To get solution for this, I try on setting environment variables but I couldn't reach all the way till end this issue to solve. So can anyone help me on this?

What if you do the replacement in your step implementation instead? Then you could have the desired value in a separate file or pass it as arguments. That way you don't need to hard code the values.
Could scenario outlines help you in any way or is the value only changing depending on external changes?
My first thought was scenario outlines like #homaxto said.
Then I thought you might want to affect it by which system you are connected to. You can do this through configuration. I have done this with Fig_Newton.
You can either set an environment varaible or use one in the commandline. Or you can use #hook type tags. With a hook tag, you can have a tag at the top of a feature file that you can use to set a variable that affects how the steps operate (but it needs to be handled inside the step).

I am using MonkeyTalk to automate some user test cases for my Android app. Everything is working fine except for when I try and detect a button containing this string:
"Connect\n(Code Required)"
I get this error:
FAILURE: Unable to find Button(Connect\n(Code required))
If I change the button to "Connect" and perform a tap on that value MonkeyTalk has no trouble, but something about the line break must be throwing it off.
After some searching I found this thread that confirmed my suspicious about the line break. There was one suggested fix here, to set the default encoding to UTF-8 (Select the Project > File > Properties > Resources)
However this did not work for me.
I have also tried to find the button using a wildcard like so:
"*(Code Required)"
But this does not seem to be supported either.
Maybe there is an alternative line break character I could use?

Maybe there's a carriage return in there? I know in most text editors a new line actually consists of (carriage return)+(newline).

Also, depending on how flexible your requirements are, you could use the #N MonkeyId replacement to get the Nth button.
IN javascript you can use below command

Is there any way to intercept the Android framework's inflation of xml resources (menus and layouts) to change the strings it uses (e.g. for attributes like android:text="#string/button_trade_commit".)
I know it's possible to override getString() as it's called from an Activity. But framework code doesn't seem to use getString(). For example, in MenuInflator.java, strings come from mContext.obtainStyledAttributes(), and obtainStyledAttributes() is final: I can't override it.
Anybody know of another way to accomplish this?
Background: I want to allow non-English-speaking users to localize my app themselves. I imagine an interface that displays the English strings and lets them enter a translation which is then used in place of the English string from then on. I can imagine also providing a "Share translations" button that uploads the translations, and then,
on the server side, incorporating them into a downloadable module that other users of the same language would get. Being able to substitute strings at runtime is the blocking piece that I can't figure out.
I don't believe you can override the systems getString() methods the way you are looking at it.

I don't think you will be able to modify the process Android uses when inflating resources the way you wanted to.
What you can do is to simply not provide any strings (android:text, etc.) in XML files. You can always obtain a reference to any element in your XML file in the code. Once you have a reference, you can provide texts in the code, taking properly localized strings from your custom framework.
I am not sure about this, but i think you can examine the source of Calligraphy library for Android. It is overriding system LayoutInflater to change the FontType, so i imagine you can do the same to change the strings.
I am trying to enable push notifications on my application.
I have the client sample code and now i am trying to get some of the code to implement it on my application. For those of you who have already implemented push notifications on your apps i am sure you are familiar with the class GCMIntentService.
So i am copying this class on my project , i configure the Manifest correctly(or i think i do) but i get errors in the file.
The errors are in expressions like R.string."something"
For example I get errors in :
R.string.gcm_registered
R.string.gcm_message
R.string.gcm_deleted
R.string.gcm_error
R.string.gcm_recoverable_error
R.drawable.ic_stat_gcm
The error is always that gcm cannot be resolved or is not a field.
But what exactly is this expression?! Is it a class or something?
Is it something on the Manifest that I haven't configured correctly?
It are strings, probably in the example app you're using, in /res/values/strings.xml
You put strings in there to have a localized place to put your user visible Strings in, so you have
1. One place to find all your strings, if you ever want to change and/or re-use
2. Easy access to translation by putting translations in per example /res/values-de/strings.xml
Look for that file in whatever example you're using, you'll find some XML defined strings. Copy them into your own project, in the same place.

I've been working on the 'Tip Calculator' app for Android and I have a couple of questions.
I'm supposed to (in the process of creating the GUI) use some EditTexts to allow the user to enter the bill amount and read the calculated total bill. In the version I have, there is no EditText anywhere in the Visual Layout Editor, only CheckText. Are these the same?
Whenever I try to edit the Java code for the app, as per the book I have, I keep getting the message:
Thus and such is never used
For example, with
private static final String BILL_TOTAL = "BILL_TOTAL';
or anything from the import Android list, other than the one referring to a bundle. I'm Not sure how to resolve this. I have some experience with C and C++, but Java is new to me.
The warning that tells you that a variable or method or import is not used can be ignored, especially if you just haven't gotten to using it yet. It's a warning and not an error, so your app should compile regardless.
I don't know what you're using to build your layout (eclipse? I use Intellij Idea), but to add an EditText, you can edit the layout file by hand. Add a line similar to:
<EditText android:id="#+id/myEditText android:width="FILL_PARENT" android:height="WRAP_CONTENT"/>
As a general rule, I like to edit these things by hand. Then, when something breaks or doesn't work as I expect it to, I have some grasp of what's in there, and so I can usually fix it. The value gained by learning how to create a layout by hand easily offsets the value of the time that you'll save.

my app has a styles.xml file with various visual constants defined.
I'd like my users to be able to switch the entire app to an alternative visual theme. I'd like to provide an alternative styles2.xml file and switch at runtime (via the Settings).
Is this possible, and how? I suspect the style names' appearance in the generated R class does not bode well.
If it's not possible, what's my next best option?
Not sure if anyone is still interested but I have found a possible solution. A bit hackish but gets the desired result.
Basically I set up my 2 style files in separate country code directories:
res/values-mcc199/style.xml
res/values-mcc198/style.xml
Then in my activity I use the following to change which is referenced:
Configuration config = new Configuration();
config.mcc = 199;
getBaseContext().getResources().updateConfiguration(config,null);
I've only done some basic testing so far but it appears to work. Obviously if you are already using country code to decide your layouts then this will interfere. I think there may be problems as well if the phone gets an event about a country change.
Actually, after some reading of the doc, it seems that this can be done. Look here.

Now, if this is logical and I didn't read the doc wrongly, you can create as many styles as you want, reference them in themes.xml with #style/... (if you want to apply it to a whole activity or application) and then, just call
setTheme(R.id.yourtheme)

I switch out a java class at build time using Ant, there is nothing to stop you switching out an XML file, as it compiles after the switch. To amend the tutorial you'd just have to change the path's of the file your templating.
