I have a menu with two items (in one fragment is the edit icon and in the other ones is the new icon(that is working fine)), and an overflow menu with three items inside, my issue is I have an empty space in the top of my overflow menu. My activity has a ViewPager with three fragments.
I have tried removing android:scaleType, adding orderInCategory and still the issue.

your XML shows 6 items total, not 5. Possibly one of your title strings is empty, resulting in the "empty" item in overflow.
I'd suggest removing the items one at a time, that should help find the culprit.

I want to make an app with a custom toolbar with a menu on the toolbar. The problem I have is that when I run the app and I click on the menu on the right side of the toolbar, the options do not appear but the menu box appears. One of the options closes the app and if I click the menu area where the exit option is the app closes.

I created the toolbar xml I set it in MainActivity .. I created the menu xml and I inflate it in MainActivity from all the tutorials these are the steps that I had to go through to get here, yet I don't know why the items in the menu xml file won't show up in the emulator.
Big thanks to Gabriele Mariotti. In his words: " The issue is the text color in the popup menu." .All I had to do was to was to add the following line of code to the Toolbar xml.

I've switched to the official Google Design Support Library. Now, I want to use a secondary menu with a divider like this:
But as Android is using the Menu Inflater I have no idea what to do now. I can add a second group, but then the items have the same size and there is no divider.

You can use the standard NavigationView defining a menu like this:

You can use any ViewGroup like a LinearLayout for your Drawer. It is not limited to a ListView and a FrameLayout. Because of this you can style your Drawer View like any other layout of an Activity for example. The only thing you should keep in mind is that the NavigationDrawer can have only two childs. The first is your layout for the Activity and the second is the Drawer. Feel free to style them as you like!

How I can force menu item to show under overflow icon. I am providing app support from api level 8 and above. for now it is showing as actionview .

But clicking physical button of device will not trigger this button you have to look for it, as I don't have any idea about it
